The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Already have Dzeko but thinking of swapping lukaku for aguero ? It wouldn't be for a hit or wildcard

    Just thinking City fixtures - Cardiff, Hull

    I can't see them doing a Chelsea and letting up on Hull in GW3

    Original plan was to get Rvp in gw3 or 4 with one hit.
    Plan is there, even if there's little twist after city game.

    gw2 Lukaku => Aguero -4
    gw3 Ivanovic => Shaw
    gw4 Aguero => Rvp

    Looks good?
    Or just play Lukaku gw2 and decide after that which city forward I want for gw3?

    I know nothing of this sport really, but from my outside opinion, the use of Torres over guys like Ba and Lukaku seems inappropriate and down right dumb. I have been only following for two years and have seen nothing of Torres in that time that should justify him starting much less be on that team. Just a question but is there a lot of racism in the EPL?

        really?...a better striker. I just go by what i see but Lukaku manhandled the league last year. He is a scary beast. If you put him and Torres in a lineup for picking teams even a pre-schooler would know to take Lukaku.

          Lukaku came nowhere close to manhandling the league last season, he didn't even make the starting XI from West Brom half the time. He is a good player and has the potential to be very good but he has been blown out of proportion massively on this site. Torres is nowhere near as good as he used to be but he isn't as bad as people claim he is...as I said before though, Chelsea can't rely on him all season for goals so they need to bring in a world class player

            31 goals in two seasons at Anderlecht (he scored 131 goals in 93 games at youth level) plus last season at the Hawthorns he netted 17 times in 35 games – again, a ratio of a goal every other game. In his year-long spell at the Baggies, the Belgian netted six times in 15 substitute appearances including a hat-trick against United = Beast!

    Have read a previous comment about having rvp/ no rvp and the rewards this might give u i have come up with the following conclusion:-

    Not having RVP gives u the money to spend on a decent def, mid and att and a decent bench. You dont want rvp in ur team as this means u will have quite a few 4.0 players that might not play anyway.

    If RVP doesnt score some game weeks this more than likely will be a huge loss in terms of points. Too much reliance on rvp and ur team will flop.

    Aguero Tempting as he not part of the Negredo/Dzeko rotation.

    However he ls also not the central striker , he plenty of money considering many goals will be scored by Negredo/Dzeko plus others

    Still none the wiser regarding city , although i am getting Lescott in, he nailed on for the next few , then i will be wildcarding anyway

    Which City defender to bring in? Had been planning on Komps before last night. Tempted by Zabs for attacking threat but worried about Richards - especially after reading City fan forums. Lescott obviously going to be annoying the 1st time Komps and Nasty are both fit. Clichy seems pretty nailed but little attacking threat... how would you go for?

    Hi everyone, my name is Rover... And I have played my wc... I've decided to wildcard, not because I've had a bad start (although I have) But because I want to try something different... So I'm having a punt on four big attacking defs for good teams with good cs potential, two big mids and three big strikers. I will play these every week (mostly) regardless of fixtures, and fill in with the best two of the rest... As an example.. (obviously other options)

    Mig (4.0)
    Zabaleta Vertonghen Vidic Coleman (4.0)
    Michu Walcott (6.0 4.5 4.5)
    Soldado Aguero Sturridge

    I have nine that will play every week so I only need to pick two of the cheapies, usually the 6.0 mid and one of the 4.5 mids.. Hugely risky but you know me, always up for a punt... I really think it could do ok with the new bap system..

    Wish me luck 🙂

      Read this earlier today. Definitely an intereting punt. Can make or break the season.

      Aguero MAY be rotated. If you're taking punts on rotation, not doing Dzeko instead?

      Or even. Walcott -> Silva, Aguero -> Giroud.
      Extra 3m to upgade your 6m to Oscar / Mirallas.
      Upgrade one 4.5m midf to Kim. Another one to Cole.

      Mig
      Zaba Vert Vidic Coleman
      Michu Silva Oscar/Mirallas
      Soldado Giroud Studge

      4.0 | Kim 4.5mid 4.0def / Cole Kim 4.0def

      not bad.

      Wow.. Cant say I like an early WC, but good luck man...

      I do like the idea tho, But I would probably go with 3 big(ish) defenders and another 2 4,5 and rotate them... still BAPs to collect, Collins/Shaw maybe?
      That should give u another min-priced midfielder like Mirallas, Nolan etc.

      Good luck to you mate, I think its a good idea seeing as the new baps system has favoured the DEF, however the ones that did get the points seem to be the ones who kept the CS and so far this week we have had 7/10 of them.

    Lukaku -> Dzeko
    Ivan -> Zabs.

    My plan from the beginning. Was gonna bring in Sturridge as well but Benteke seems good vs Liverpool so I'll delay bringing him in (for a hit).

    Yay?

    Anyone else feel shafted about Dzeko not being awarded the 1st assist? The peanuts who run the damn site were even confused, giving it to him twice and then taking it off!

      Read the rules.. They made a mistake and corrected it.. Annoying maybe but it's the righr decision. As an owner I'd be more annoyed at Dzeko for squandering countless good chances

        I've read the rules and reckon that text is way too damn ambiguous! So how do they determine the significant intended destination of the ball??? He smashed it into the box and it too a little bit of a deflection off Taylor ... so any deflections now coming off a defender will not be awarded?

      Yeah could have been 0+3 imo. Last year ruling would have given him the first assist but they changed it. Can't get the assist so easily any more for those bouncing balls in the box.

      Dzeko should have done more and got 2+2 from that game easily, dammit

A week of training should help him though and the swans will be pretty exhausted after their europa trip. think i'm still gonna take a punt

    Am I crazy to think that Dzeko is well worth the 7.5 for the next two fixtures atleast and Aguero is not worth the 11.0 price tag?

    Dzeko looked immense yesterday, and was undoubtedly the spear head of the attack. He looks fairly nailed on for the next two at least I'd say. With Negredo to gradually establish himself by virtue of a couple of sub appearances.

      If the second sentence of your second paragraph is correct, "He looks fairly nailed on for the next two" then you're right. But I don't see how you can say that. He was great, but he didn't score and Negredo did (Incorrectly ruled offsides) in just 10 minutes on the pitch. Who knows what Pellegrini will decide?

    Soldado worth a punt we think? got into good positions, gr8 ball control and movement but looked very sluggish infront of goal. not very match sharp really. still think a week of training could do him wonders and then he's got an exhausted swans back from a euro trip. I have to say CPL look the best of the promoted sides so far

    absolutely delighted about the game yesterday for solely one reason. aguero looks like a viable captain option and a real alternative for those without van persie. and costs 3mil less than the flying dutchman so woludn't need to kill the whole balance of the team to get him in.

    who do you think is going to become a real armband options during these first few gameweeks?
