Scout Report – Etienne Capoue

Andre Villas-Boas made his fourth signing of the summer transfer window last week by acquiring Etienne Capoue from French side Toulouse for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m. The versatile midfielder follows Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho to the club as Villas-Boas freshens us his first-team squad for his second year in charge at White Hart Lane:

The 25-year-old rejected the offer of guaranteed game time at Cardiff City to move to north London instead and despite the increased competition at his new club, reckons his international chances have taken a turn for the better:

“I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league. Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse. Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not…I told myself that if I have a good season at Tottenham, I would have my chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil. I had a very good relationship with the president and staff during the transfer market and everyone agreed I should leave.”

The History

A product of the Toulouse youth academy, Capoue has been a one-club man prior to his move to White Hart Lane. Beginning his career back in December 2007, the six foot two defensive midfielder made just five appearances in his breakthrough season before cementing a regular role for the Ligue 1 club during the following campaign.

In his first three full years at Toulouse, Capoue offered little in terms of attacking returns –just three goals and three assists from 102 league matches – but has vastly improved over the last couple of seasons. Over 33 appearances in 2011/12 he produced three goals and five assists and improved once again last time out, with seven goals and an assist in 34 games. On the international stage, he has turned out for his country on 18 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

While Capoue is confident of accruing plenty game time over the campaign, there’s plenty of strong competition for the central midfield starting berths at White Hart Lane right now. The departure of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore may have lessened the load but with Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby all vying for contention, the strength in depth suggests rotation could well be on the cards.

At present, the future of Gareth Bale also plays a part in how we assess the situation. If the Welshman departs for Madrid, Villas-Boas’ shopping spree between now and the closure of the transfer window will likely have a major say in his preferred formation over the season. The 4-2-3-1 utilised at Selhurst Park on Sunday would surely restrict Capoue’s game time more than the 4-3-3 system utilised by Villas-Boas at former club Porto. Such a shape could well see the Frenchman sitting alongside Dembele or Sandro, with Paulinho pushing on as the most advanced central midfielder. Capoue’s versatility is likely to be beneficial to his minutes, though; Villas-Boas admitted this played a significant part in his acquisition, with the new boy also offering an option at centre-half in light of the summer departure of both Steven Caulker and William Gallas.

Those looking for a route into Tottenham’s midfield ahead of a strong run of upcoming fixtures will hold fire until the transfer window closes – the potential signing of Willian and/or Erik Lamela will play a significant part in how we assess the Fantasy landscape at the Lane. While a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 6.0 is relatively budget-friendly, there are plenty of similarly-priced options who offer both guaranteed game time and far greater potential of attacking points; Capoue, in all likelihood, looks set to remain firmly off Fantasy radars over the season ahead.

For those on WC, here's a pretty good looking RvP team:

    Mignolet / Etheridge
    Ward / Chester / Collins / Turner / Coleman
Mirallas / Lampard / Walcott / El Ahmadi / Coutinho
Dzeko / Van Persie / Benteke

0 FT, £0.0m in the bank.

Anyone want to speculate wildly about how ManU and Chelsea will set out this week?

I can't see Chelsea trying to play tika-taka like they did against Hull, but its stating the bleeding obvious that ManU are not Hull.

I have RVP, so a striker who will score and play most of the time for 7.5 seems like a reasonable deal to me. I may then be able to get in a Benteke/Soldado without making my midfield a total wasteland.

Ive decided to bite the bullet..
Partly cos he has already dropped but I've decided I'm going to back him.

    The Luk..
After his two cameo performances (and the lack of from the other two) it may be fair to say that he is the number 1 striker there now..
He hasn't been given a proper chance yet but he will very soon.
At 8 or now 7.9 he's still a very viable option..and there is huge latent talent there ready to explode..

It's hazard we should be worried about.
2 ninty minute games at home and just the 1 assist.. (Some captain)

He's gone from my team and in has come silva..

Hoping the luk will get his break and let's face it at 8 mill he s not a massive risk anyway with the likes if Dzeko and RvP lurking..
    Anyone agree?

That 8 mil could be 7.6 by Monday night.

He's 55% of the way to dropping again tonight, and there'll be a big exodus on Friday/Saturday morning as people change their teams then. Then people will be kneejerking in whoevers hot on Saturday and Sunday evening.

What should we do with Lukaku? Considering hes dropped 7.9m and with his prospects to start against Man U I feel inclined to keep him... Maybe I'm being too optimistic thinking that he'll shine verse Man U and nailed down the front man position that I think he has already rightly earned from his performance in season 2012/13.

Or am I just being stubborn?

Hazard Walcott Coutinho De Bruyne (Jarvis)
    Soldado (C) Dzeko J.Rod

Hopefully J.Rod starts. Think KDB to Ben Arfa is a good transfer? Team looks okay otherwise. Annoying injury news regarding Kompany. Not been the best first week for me!

you get a free one in January

ideally you use your wildcard when you have 6 or more injuries/suspensions

      or

      before/after a DGW

but certainly NOT after 1 week!

i save mine for as long as possible, if my team is really struggling then i'm happy to use it early like last yr around GW 7 or 8 which proved to be a good decision, i'd never do it after the first week tho

Please give me some feedback! Got 98 points but took a 4 point hit to get rid of chelsea players.

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Ivanovic->Zabaleta, Coleman, Whittaker, (Chester, Baker)
Coutinho, Mirallas, Walcott, Hazard -> Silva, (Kim)
    Benteke, Soldado, Dzeko

planning on replacing Baker -> Chambers(gw3), Coutinho->Nolan (gw3), Mirallas->Oscar(gw4), Dzeko->Bony(gw5) and in the following weeks if all goes as expected and eventually Suarez -> Soldado (gw6)

Hazard is playing united then no game in gw3, I'm also putting Oscar in my team in gw4 so to have a chelsea player (he's also 2mill cheaper)

Coutinho didn't seem effective or prolific in front of goal. They're also playing Man Utd, Swansea and Southampton in the next three games. I've a feeling there'll be a lack of goals -> lack of points. Suarez is coming in when their games become better.

Reposting as end of last post, any thoughts on team appreciated, especially start Ivanovic or Chester? Cheers

    Afternoon all,

Long time reader first time poster. Feeling happy with 85 points from GW1, even if the stress from reading the comments here in the weeks/days/hours before the deadline probably cost me a few grey hairs.

    Team for GW1 was:

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Mert, Ivanovic, Coleman (Chester, Turner(Cardiff)
Wally, Snoddy, Mirallas, Hazard (c) (Kim)
    Soldado, Lukaku, Giroud

For this week I've gone for
    Hazard > Silva (c)
    Lukaku > Lambert
    Boruc in nets.

Thinking was that Lambert is better long term option and Hazard is too much of a rotation risk plus blank GW3 so need to ship out Chelsea. Still not convinced with Silva as (c), may end up going Soldado but feeling quite solid now. Not sure about GW3 yet, I'll see how this lot does this week. Interesting thing is no-one else so far in the mini league has RVP so he could even be a differential GW4...

Main question is the WC, which I wasn't planning to use until crisis/DGW, but am now thinking it could be a game changer if lots of new transfers come in last minute....anyone else thinking this?

    Thoughts?

    Cheers
