Moving Target

Moving Target – Scott Sinclair

West Brom boss Steve Clarke boosted his options on the flanks towards the end of last week by acquiring Scott Sinclair from Manchester City on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. Having previously been coached by Clarke during his five-year spell at Chelsea, the winger revealed the pair’s history played a major part in his decision to move to the midlands:

“I like the style of football Albion play and that’s why I chose to come here and play for Steve Clarke. I know him previously from my Chelsea days and I’m excited to be playing for him again. I sat down with my family and Steve Clarke being at West Brom helped us make the decision when we were discussing where the best place for me to come was at this point of my career. I’ve spoken to Steve throughout, we know each other well, and there isn’t a better place for me to come than here. Albion play good football and it’s great for me to come into this side.”

The History

Sinclair’s career began as a 15-year-old with Bristol City, where he became the club’s second-youngest ever first-team debutant back in late 2004. After making a couple of league appearances, he was snapped up by Chelsea the following summer but, despite his early promise, the winger found himself out of favour and made a mere five appearances for the west London club.

Indeed, much of Sinclair’s game time arrived via loan spells, with the Blues farming him out to a number of lower league clubs. Stints at Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan produced a total of six goals and four assists over 65 appearances before Swansea splashed out £500,000 for his services in the summer of 2010.

Finally guaranteed first-team football, the winger’s time at the Liberty proved a huge success. Handed spot-kick duties for the Welsh outfit, Sinclair racked up 22 goals and three assists in 46 appearances as he helped his new club clinch promotion to the Premier League via a play-off win over Reading.

The wide man’s first year in the top-flight brought him onto Fantasy radars, with eight goals and five assists for the Swans but after scoring in Gameweek 1 against QPR last season, Sinclair’s decision to up depart the Liberty for City ended his Fantasy prospects for 2012/13. Handed nine brief sub appearances and two starts under Roberto Mancini, he failed to find the net once in a hugely disappointing spell.

The Prospects

The move looks a perfect solution for all parties concerned, with Sinclair clearly a peripheral figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team shake-up for the season ahead. Clarke, on the other hand, is desperate to inject some new blood into his side and is keen to help get the winger’s career back on track after a disappointing time at the Etihad:

“Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again. We’re delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career. He is the type of player we were missing from the squad. He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals – he has proven that over his career. He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options.”

Much will depend on Clarke’s preferred formation as to how we assess Sinclair’s potential. So far this term, the Baggies boss has rolled out a 4-4-2 with James Morrison and Graham Dorrans handed the wide roles – if West Brom persist with this shape, Sinclair would also be vying for game time along with Chris Brunt for a role on the wing. Alternatively, Clarke may return to last term’s 4-2-3-1 and shift Morrison back into a central berth behind a lone forward, lessening the competition out wide. In addition, the midlands outfit also lined up in a 4-3-3 in one or two pre-season friendlies – potentially affording Sinclair a role in a front three.

Bearing in mind his side have yet to score over the first two Gameweeks, Clarke looks likely to freshen up his options ahead of the weekend home game with Swansea, perhaps handing Sinclair a debut against his old club. Listed in the mid-price bracket across the Fantasy games – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – Sinclair’s appeal would certainly be boosted if he’s afforded a share of set-pieces, while his impressive spot-kick conversion record may also persuade Clarke to hand him penalty duties.

While the short-term fixtures look decent (SWA, ful, SUN), Clarke’s side then face United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the following six – a schedule hardly conducive to Fantasy investment. With cheaper midfield alternatives such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham, Hull’s Robbie Brady or Everton youngster Ross Barkley not only far kinder on the budget but quick to pick up the attacking points, Sinclair is perhaps one to monitor until the Baggies’ agenda takes a turn for the better around the Gameweek 10 mark.

Hope everyone had a better week that I did (42pts!)

    Migs (Harper)
Zaba -- Riether -- Coleman -- Turner (ward)
Walcott -- Kim -- Coutinho (Hazard, Britton)
    JRod -- RVP -- Giroud

GW2 transfer Terry to Zaba worst choice so far, but hoping that he'll come good against Hull.

GW3 - Should I get Silva or Michu in for Hazard, and then, should I bench JRod, or Kim?

Here's my take on the cheap options on offer at the moment.

Brady put in a good claim this weekend and set pieces will help but don't see Hull as a team scoring enough for him to be the best pick. Not a bad pick by any means, and should score decently, but I personally wouldn't want to be relying on a Hull player.

Cardiff offer many options, Kim will be steady but having seen him vs City think his main output will be assists. He only notched two goals last season and while I think he's a good player, not sure how much that translates into points.

Whittingham has set pieces which will score him points but he will need to improve on the end of last season where his form was not great and was even dropped from the side.

Gunnarsson is a player I was very keen on before the season started but was put off as some said his place was under threat because of Medel's arrival, otherwise he probably would have been in my team. However now he seems to be a starter, if he can reproduce his form of last season where he was joint top scorer for Cardiff, then he could be a steady player. Also offers a nice cheap differential as very few will select him.

One thing to watch with Cardiff midfielders, if the pattern of last season is followed where the forwards aren't prolific and lots of goals come from midfield, is that any one of them could be a good pick, but it'll be interesting to see how Campbell and Cornelius adapt. If these two start scoring they may not need to rely on goals from midfield as much as last season.

Barkley is a great option if he keeps his place, but when Gibson is fully fit his place isn't necessarily secure, so it's a big if. He could however be a steal if Fellaini goes and is not replaced with a new signing. One to wait and see in a couple of week for now.

One player that I own who I am happy with despite no goals so far is Redmond. Having seen the Norwich highlights from both games he is involved in a lot of their good play and looks very lively. My only concern is Norwich don't look like scoring many goals. However he seems to be secure at the moment, and I am keeping faith that he will start to come good soon.

Ward Prowse is another one that has edged onto my radar. As with Barkley I'm not sure he is nailed on, but for 4.5 I'd back him to see a lot of minutes this season and he shows some big promise. If you're shopping on a budget and willing to accept h may not play 90 in every game, he could be a nice cheeky cheap differential.

For what it's worth I'm planning to head into the next few weeks with Redmond and Gunnarsson, but think most of the players above have merits that could make any of them a decent pick.

He's been their most lively player on match of the day the last two weeks, and even though that's not always the best sample to use, I think he's looked dangerous enough to keep his place. I'd be very surprised to see him benched any time soon.

Nice write up mate. I agree with just about everything you say. Brady not worth it for me: the team will not be scoring enough (I mean, they only managed 1 pen against Norwich at home). Whittingham has caught my fancy but I think it will just be a assist here and there and a goal when they get a pen, but I'm not that attracted to him while he stays on the wing.

I'm pretty frustrated I missed the boat on Barkley for his price rise more than anything else. I know he is bound to increase further in price, but not worth the -4 hit for me by now. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Ravel.

Yeah, same, particularly after watching him play last weekend. He looked great, just lacking a little in confidence. Still, I can't justify 0.4M for Morrison to Barkley considering he's going to be on my bench and might not increase for a while if he has another blank.

I'm tempted to go with Ward-Prowse. If he's nailed on then I think he's a better option than a nailed on Barkley.

Good point, but at the same time don't want their only significant output to be set pieces as it's very inconsistent random returns, and I'd rather go for a player who's all round game looks good.

'Tis a gamble, but I'm thinking about Gardners' returns at the end of last season when Sunderland had 2/3 pens over a short space of time. He wasn't exactly playing incredibly, but because he was on pens he racked up 10+ points in each game.

Are we all getting carried away with the new allocation of bonus points?

Yes, defenders appear to be getting rewarded for keeping clean sheets, but goal scorers are rewarded when they score too. As are midfielders; the fact that the midfielders have not been scoring goals in the first TWO GWs, has nothing to do with the new bonus points system...

Expected clean sheets for big clubs this season = 15 approx

Expected goals for big club strikers this season = 20 approx

    No problem 😎

Maybe hold on to that WC! (and Benteke!) you could just take a bit of a hit. Sell Cech for a 4.5 like Marshall and do Michu in for Hazard and save (by my quick reckoning) 2.5 mil to upgrade midfield next week. That's a -4 hit. I think you could field:

      Boruc
      Collins, Turner, Touré, Mert
      Silva, Michu, snod, Kim
      RVP Lambert.

I'm hoping Ravel (I'm assuming that's your Morrison?) will do well tonight in the Capital 1. He got 15 mins at the weekend...a great performance tonight and you never know!

ok lads, with this Foster news I'd love to draft Michu in, but I'm left with a choice of him this week or Tekkers next week and I think I'd rather have the latter.

So I have 8.3 to spend on downgrading Hazard, I have come up with, having been caught out by Lukaku's first price drop

    Paulinho
    Townsend

Its hard to see Spurs conceding alot with that midfield and they are not giving Soldado adequate service. So I think it will be low scoring

I think Spurs will try to pack the midfield, and choke Arsenal's offensive play. Don't think there'll be many goals in the match, unusually for a NLD.

Jeez the Foster/Boruc keeper combo has been a nightmare. Lots of points on the bench and now a broken foot.

    Ouch.

Any ideas on a plan to get RVP for GW4, and thoughts on Hazard/Benteke, would you bench or transfer.

    Boruc ....(Foster)
    Coleman Toure Kos ....(Chester) (B.Turner)
    Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Hazard ....(Kim)
    Soldado Benteke Dzeko

    0.5m bank.

Hazard for a cheapie - Soldado to RVP, We got lucky with the Soldado pens but he hasn't been very threatening. I'm gonna swap him out too.

Why does everyone want to get Michu now that Foster is out?

Is his back-up awful or something?

Myhill will be returning from injury, not a bad keeper but without Foster I think WBA lose an extremely talented keeper which may well impact the defenders. So I'm happy owning Michu for that one.

      It goes like this:

Keeper injured, people think ohhh, who plays against them the next game (one game...), get their most likely goal scorer, captain him... 5.35 minutes into that game, say captain fail!!!

      Then cry 🙁

As a West Brom fan, I'm gutted with the Ben Foster news. I think Luke Danies has more potential than Myhill, but I'd be wary of investing in our defence for a few weeks.

Chelsea fans & those in-the-know: how secure is Ivanovic's place?

    1. Cesar A came on last night as a sub indicating that he is nearing match fitness
    2. Jose said that Brana & Cesar are his 2 RB's indicating Brana won't feature much as a CB
    3. Luiz coming back means more competition in the back four
    4. I remember Jose shuffling his back line quite a bit last season, though I think some of it was due to injury - Arbeloa / Ramos / Essien at RB, Varane / Pepe / Ramos at CB, Contrao / Marcelo at LB.

I am debating whether to keep him or not because Chelsea CS potential looks tasty and he's got the most attacking threat albeit at a reduced BAP collection rate.

    Any insight much appreciated.

      Low confidence etc.

I'm not sure about Michu and Swansea at all. Michu seemed to be way off pace against Spurs, he was totally dominated by the Spurs defence. On the other hand, if you've already got Michu in the team you might as well captain him. It's not like there's many other good options this GW.

Clarke talks of Myhill back in training and being the backup to Foster.

Clarke said: “Injuries are part and parcel of the game. We lost a goalkeeper in Ben who was in great form, he was strong and it’s a worry. Boaz Myhill has been a great deputy.

“We used him a lot last year when Ben was injured. If Ben isn’t badly hurt it won’t be a major issue. We expect Boaz to train today.

“Whether he’ll be ready for tomorrow’s game [against Newport in the Capital One Cup], we don’t know. Luke Daniels is a more than capable goalkeeper. He’s not had many opportunities but he works well with the other two and he did well on Saturday.

"If Luke has to play on Tuesday then no problem.”

Hardly a glowing endorsement of Daniels!

    Hi guys,
So my gk combo at the moment is foster and Harper. I managed to get fosters points this week, but obviously need to make a change.
    So, which do I do:
    Harper to McGregor
    Foster to mignolet

      A) Hazard -> Silva, Anelka -> Campbell/Chamakh

      B) Hazard -> Nolan, Anelka -> Dzeko/Lambert.

And which of the options in either case? Thanks.
