The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Horrible week, really bad, and not one I was expecting thought my team looked fairly good on paper. Thank god Redmond came in for me having stuck with my gut on him from day 1.

Giroud and Sturridge are hurting me big time atm but with a front line of RVP Benteke Soldado, I'm surely gonna be good in the medium term not knee jerking to one of those two?

Thinking of doing Mirallas to Lampard this week with my FT and leaving the rest as it is, surely things are gonna turn better for me. So frustrating aswell after a very good GW1 had two stinkers that have set me right back.

Really starting to doubt RVP with so many big scoring mid priced forwards, Sturridge and Giroud look set to match his score in the near future, money to be spent on the BAP hoovering defence.

If RVP blanks vs Palace think he might have to go....

Hi Lads need advice asap pls ... need to make decision now....

    Boruc Marshall

    Shaw Chester Ward Coleman yanga-mbiwa

    Barfa Silva Walcott Barkley Rozicky

    RVP Aguero Aspas

    1.2 in the bank , 2 FT's

Option 1: Rozicky to Brady/JWP ; Aspas to Giroud/ Sturridge (do it now only)

Option 2: Aspas to Bent; Shaw to Dawson

My justificattion for option 2 is that it allows me to improve my mediocre defense and will leave me enough money to uprgrade barfa to michu or a spurs mid on gw6 once barfas fixtures have turned. I definitely dont see barfa as a long term pick. Also bent has amazing fixtures and he is proven goal poacher. on the other hand giroud/ sturridge would leave me with an overall stronger frontline but stuck with barfa ( or similarly priced option of which i dont see many) and mediocre defence. Thoughts ...?

    Do I

    - get rid of Coutinho for a midfielder that will score more goals than assists?
    (will decide who after internationals)

    - or get Benteke in to replace Soldado?
(other strikers are Giroud & Dzeko; I'm not worried about Dzeko and I'm not chasing Sturridge)

Goal is to only make one transfer during the break.

I have the same decision to make with regards to Coutinho... to be perfectly honest, I am happy to sit here and lose the 0.1 on Sturridge tonight, and wait to see what happens during the break in any International games he plays, but the thing is I just know I'm still gonna want him in my team so don't really see the point in waiting... and Dzeko has to go now he's not getting the 90mins...

Coutinho is obviously a great player, but for 9m, I just can't afford him getting 3pts every week... I think it has to be Lampard for me, set pieces, penalties and late runs into the box for a million less?

      No brainer for me...

I have both Benteke and Soldado, so would recommend either... and whilst I would love Giroud, I'll be sticking with Theo only for now...

Here's my WC team, I've gone for a super-duper-BAPtacular 4 at the back:
    Mignolet
    Luiz, Mertesacker, Vertonghen, Agger
    Walcott, Lamela, Hernadez
    Sturridge, Benteke, Giroud
Bench: Boruc, Brady, Jedinak & Chester

David Luiz is obviously gunna make a mockery of the new bonus points system.
I'm unsure about Lamela, can afford to upgrade to Silva.

    Is 4-3-3 the way forward?

    @ENR. Founded.

    Reasons about WC now:
Wildcard definitely. Why...? Is it too early? Long post alert upcoming 😉

Its not early. Lets say a man (I am not gonna discover who 😉 ) made an experiment last year. Took 2 teams. The same skill, the same manager, the same luck probably. He was testing the theory of early WC. First team made WC GW 3 and the second one made it later GW 7 or 8 I don't remember. Team one got Bale Suarez Fellaini Michu all cheap and never looked back. Top 10 K was the easiest thing to achieve.

Team 2 struggled all the way even made a 24pt hit one time. Trying with differentials and playing risky. Getting all the players later or being reluctant to pay that much for them. WC early is the real deal, It has never been the opposite, My best year I played it within the I. Break. That is the real time most probably. WC is overrated anyway. You could end up with worse team a lot of times. Do you know how much times the WC team has scored badly than the previous time? You would be surprised how many times.

WC is all about timing and I am speaking abot last 5 - 6 years. Always the early WC was the real deal. Everytime the winner WC early. Also someone posted this few hears ago. From top 10, 8 managers played the WC early or 16 from 20.

Timing it is but now is the timing. Utd fixtures turns around. Che worsens (we are all stocked up), Villa too. The transfer deadline is closed (Suarez, Rooney, Bale), a lot of injuries happen when players play for national teams etc...

I tried to see what is there on offer, I made 32 pt hit. Well if that isn't a WC what is it...? Later when we all know who the keepers are what is benefit on playing WC. Fix small things now or than,,?...? Nooooo, sorry for saying but saving WC for black days is amateurs way of thinking.

What do we need to know in order to wait..? We know almost everything. If some players emerges now or than there are the transfers. This is the time to prepare yourself and react in later phase. If you react at this time always you will be one or 2 week behind and lose and miss on all big hauls. last year I transferred in all the hack trick players one week too late.

To conclude that we know all we need to know:
    - There will be more bonuses per game, lets say 10 in average, not 6 like before,
    - CB are good for BP,
    - Wingers and full backs loose potential for BP.
    - Passing is everything,
    - Attacking potential in midfield/ at the back means less BP
    - There are tones of mid price strikers to choose from,
    - RVP or no RVP is the decision,
    - No cheap strikers but plenty of 5m midfielders,
    - 1 or maybe 2 5m midfielders for me,
    - The teams for potential of defense already spotted on,
    - The attacking teams already spot on,
    - The no go teams (New) already spotted on,

What else do we need mate..? Of course with every +GW we learn more but nothing crucial. If we wait all the time we should plat in GW 37.

    Cheers

P.S. @ Archie. Thanks man for the reply, great post.

P.P.S. Due to popular demand on midfielders around 5:
        Kim
        Gunnarson
        Brady
        Whits
        Radmond
        Barkley
Williams (he has potential, trust me)
        Ward P
        Flamini even
Pennant I think he is around 5m

You've almost convinced me there, I was very happy without playing my WC until now 😛

The only thing is I don't know who i'd actually get in on my WC though.

I'd certainly change my defence around quite a lot, and maybe a couple of midfielders, but there are no standout options, no Michu or Fellaini screaming 'must-have' at this stage.

The only area where there are must haves is the strikers, and I'm already happy with my striker force of Sturridge, Benteke, Soldado and don't fancy changing just yet

Yeah I see what you are saying, My point of view is that when those bargains, stand out options emerge its better to use the transfer and be in better starting position. Not being in the position: I have a lot of dead woods, I need to think about them, those players can wait. You will kick yourself when they will explode or have a great game and you had the hunch but didn't have time to pick them..

Lets have in example Mark's team. He won't WC right? He has Anelka,Shaw, Clyne, Weinmann

Can he even consider Lamela lest say? Or he has a strong believe in Lampard. Can he fit him in? All the time he will have more pressing issues and will waste (or spend ) the transfers on them

When you set up nicely with a WC, then it is easier to adjust. I am not saying that new players will emerge with time. not at all.

        Did I convince u..?

That is actually a very good argument, I am currently focused on shifting out a some deadwood (Amorebieta) and few i'm unsure of (Celustka, Murner, Kim, Coutinho) and this could inhibit me from jumping on a must have bandwagon, eg Lamela if he explodes.

I think I'll leave it for now, but I see what you're saying, it makes sense to be free to jump on any bandwagon you wish.
On the other hand, there's nothing saying that my WC squad won't instantly be horrible and I'll be wondering why i brought in these injury prone players and rotation threats in a couple of weeks time 😛

Ok FFS, this is my first RMT post. Just as a little background, this is my first season playing FPL, and Im having fun so far. Below is my gameweek history and my team. I started well and have been getting worse ever since.

    GW1 - 105 pts - ranked 8700 overall
    GW2 - 58 pts - green arrow up to 2500
    GW3 - 46 pts - red arrow down to 13500

Being an American I took a punt on Altidore that has failed miserably. I also made a bad decision this GW to start Boruc over Mignolet. I transferred Altidore out for Giroud today with my FT to avoid his price drop and Giroud's increase so I have no free trades. What other changes, if any, should I have in mind before GW4. I havent taken any hits yet, and I'm not keen on the idea, but am open to it after the poor performance this week.

    Here is the team:

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Coleman Ivanovic Zabaleta (Collins) (Whittaker)

    Walcott Paulinho Mirallas Hazard (Ward-Prowse)

    Giroud Soldado Dzeko

    Thoughts?

I have 6 of your back seven, so am in agreement there, though mindful that Whittaker's game time might be limited. I'm holding him for the price rises and then selling once he loses his place. I like what I've seen of Paulinho, though the Spurs midfield will be uncertain for a few weeks. I don't like Dzeko in the longer term. I'd consider replacing with Wellbeck / Lambert / Berbatov, or even downgrading Mirallas and upgrading Dzeko to Sturridge or even Aguero.

          DMCQT,

Thanks for your input. I have been thinking the same thing about downgrading Mirallas and upgrading Dzeko to Sturridge or Benteke. The problem is that would cost -8 now, so I dont think it's worth it. Probably just ride it out with Dzeko until after GW4 and then figure out a plan with my FT.

          What do you think?

Thanks Quish, I think im leaning towards not taking a hit then. And I am very curious to see what price Eriksen comes in at. In a couple weeks I think I'll reassess the spurs midfield to decide on paulinho, lamela, or eriksen. Being a fan I gotta have least one of them in the midfield.

Im also interested in possibly picking up Suarez in a few weeks, and Im currently thinking a Hazard downgrade might be the only option to free the funds.

I actually almost did Altidore (c) and Dzeko (vc) this week, which would have failed even worse than my Soldado (c) did. But Im a Tottenham fan, so I didnt have the heart to captain Walcott over Soldado, which might have been the smarter choice and would have earned me a few extra points.

    Center Backs topic.

    1. Dawson starting role under threat or he is safe from rotation, at least for now?

    2. Is Fonte assured starter or I/we should pay the premium for Lovren. What happened to Yoshida? Was he fit all the time or just back from injury. If he became a starter he is even cheaper 4.3m I think.

    3. Luiz, Terry, Cahill. Which one is the safe pick.. ? Looks like Luiz is the one no...?

    4. Toure starting role not that assured when he comes back from injury? Skrtel had a solid game, they kept a CS against Utd and they signed 2 more defenders (confirmed by Rodgers).

    Cheers,

      1) I'd say Dawson's role is currently safe, with the other two likely to be used more in Europe, however, if he has a patch of bad form he could get dropped. He's certainly in the driving seat at the moment though

      2) During Pre-season the talk on here was of Yoshida being ahead of Fonte in the pecking order, not sure what happened with that tbh. Personally I'd prefer a Soton full back as the route into their defence, Lovren too expensive and Fonte not nailed on. Only trouble is they're both injured, bit of a nightmare.

      3) No idea. Presumably Luiz will be first choice, probably alongside Terry, but we don't yet know. Terry and Cahill staked a decent claim as a partnership in the first few games while Luiz was out.

      4) Toure's place is going to be under threat soon, as you don't pay £15m+ for a CB to bench every week, however if he is fit by the Swansea game i'd expect him to start, and Sakho to be eased into the first team gently and eventually replace him. Outside chance that Sakho replaces Agger instead though, as they are both left footed. I expect Skrtel to leave, although after a great performance today he may not

AVB certainly seems to like him, and he is club captain, but with Kaboul finally match fit and a new CB signing to give a debut to he is perhaps under threat.

I'd still say he's worth getting, Spurs will certainly get a few CSs over the coming weeks

In theory yes. As long as they rise twice or 4 times you can make a .1 or .2 profit. But if they that popular maybe you want them in your team rather than to sell again. Just be careful not to chop and change too much otherwise you can lose money.

Yes it is. A bit uncertain about not having any Chelsea cover as they seem strong at the back. But at the same time it's hard to ignore spurs, arsenal and united fixtures. Zab is just for his attacking potential, but perhaps Dawson is the better optian as spurs due to BPs. Might have to get in prowse in the mid to bring in Ivan, but for who?
