The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

the concept of a BPS is complication and garbage. The man of the match deserves 3 pts, end of story. WHy not just make goals worth 9, 8 or 7 pts, if goalscorers automatically get the 3 bp's ?

There are too many FPL employees. Ah, for simpler times.

G'day Deadzone. Looks like I really need the advice this year and those in the know say this is the time / place to come. Currently just inside 1m and behind my Dad who I introduced to the game for the first time to help him "productively" live his retirement. He went for the unorthodox 5-3-2 this week....masterstroke or beginners luck? only time will tell.

    Anyway, my team
    Mig (Boruc)
    Mert, Ivan, Shaw (Ward, Chester)
    Walcott, Mirallas, Kim, Brady (Cabral)
    RVP, Sturridge, Dzeko
    $3.4m, IFT

    Should I
    A) Dzeko>Lambert, Cabral>Ben Arfa / Paulinho/ Nolan
    B) Dzeko>Benteke, Cabral>Hernandez (or better alternative up to $6.3m)
    C) Dzeko>Giroud, Cabral>Hernadez (or better alternative up to $6.7m)

Also should I do it all in one week for a hit or phase through two weeks?

Having winced as Cabral dropped today I will wait to after internationals to make any changes.(I fully blame Granville for putting me on to him and Mark talking me out of Barkley, 0.3m sell-on I will never see again)

    Thanks in advance

Seems a sensible way to go so far this year. Heavy hitting mids haven't emerged yet so makes since to hold the cash up front and wait.

Dzeko to Bentenke now (or wait for Bentenke's international matches first if you're not at risk of losing value on Dzeko)

and I think I'd wait for clarity before doing anything with the midfield

      among Ben Arfa/Nolan/Paulinho/Hernandez:
      - Hernandez has the best upcoming fixtures and potential over the next 15 game weeks
      - Ben Arfa & Nolan will have harder schedules in another few weeks
      - I've seen nothing to indicate Paulinho is going to generate fantasy points

Thanks, I got Dzeko 7.5 so should be able to ride the internationals without dropping value. I always wait for internationals anyway, way too much injury risk to go early. Thanks for your thoughts on Paulinho, I think my Spurs bias wanted to have some involvement but I can't see much value across the team at the moment

    Zaba Turner(Nor) Merte Chester Turner(car)
    Cou Hazard Walcott Snodgrass Williams
    Dzeko Stu Soldado

I'de done Dzeko -> Giroud. Arse have sexy fixtures until gw 9 more or less. Besides it is cheaper than Benteke.

Next moves have to be: Snodgrass -> Bradley or whatsoever
    Turner (Nor) -> Coleman/Ager/Terry..

Still not convinced having too many big hitting mids is a good idea. Michu still has poor fixtures wheras liverpool have good fixtures so it may be worth not using the transfer on coutinho and using it somewhere where the points are being scored atm and that is in defenses such as liv and Spurs.

    Maybe we just need flexibility.

Say you buy 5 defenders around 4-5.5
    2 midfielders 4.5-5.5

Play your best 4, bench 3, each week according to fix and form.

    Sometimes it'll be 4-3-3 sometimes 3-4-3

    hopefully not 5-2-3 haha

Careful with Mbiwa, taylor is injured and taylor was first choice - go coloccini for security and also i think defenders earning extra bonus are worth it.

I do think RvP might run riot now looking at his forthcoming fixtures - even ManC defense looks vulnerable right now. watch sturridge is injured and advise a playing 2nd goalkeeper incase something bad happens and you dont want to spend a transfer on a keeper.

    Zabaleta, Coleman, Mertesacker, Ivanovic, Whittaker
Yaya Toure, Coutinho, Barkley, James Morrison, Colback
    RVP, Giroud, Wolf

    2.1m in bank

I have done Dzeko -> Giroud to save some money (Dzeko is now more of a headache with rotation)
Shall I do Wolf -> Benteke with a 4 point hit or shat I sit quiet?

Last repost of my only question about my team

    Do I

A - get rid of Coutinho for a midfielder that will score more goals than assists?
(will decide who after internationals; probably someone on Chelsea)

B - or get Benteke in to replace Soldado?
(other strikers are Giroud & Dzeko; I'm not worried about Dzeko and I'm not chasing Sturridge)

Goal is to only make one transfer during the break.
