The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wild card activated, I feel violated I've done it this early but with a few injuries and under performing players I've taken the plunge before the price rise today.

my thoughts...taking a -4 or even a -8 is not the worst idea when you can bet on the player...

    I will now have:

    Silva Ben arfa Walcott Nolan
    Benteke Sturridge Giroud

Should i bring in Oscar for Nolan?

i agree -4 or -8 ca be perfectly sensible, if you feel they will do better long term. Not sure what you mean about 'bet on the player'

Could've mate for sure, but it was a spur of the moment decision, wanted to reshape my forward line, all three have been taken out for Studge, Benteke and Giroud/Negredo (not sure yet, but plenty of time to decide.)

I wasn't the happiest about dropping Hazard for Oscar earlier, so rectified that. Didnt want to stay doubled up on the City defence so thats changed. I might or might not drop Silva (Undecided).

Took out Marshall as back up keeper, I don't think I'll be dropping Migs to bench anytime soon so brought in a 4.0.

So all in all I know like you say I could've held out but I just thought I can do a fair bit of reshaping.

      your front line is great.
4/5 of your mids are great, Coutinho still has a favorable schedule and won't likely be injured during int'l break.

I think you could make gradual changes. Yes, start with Rat since he was most heavily owned of the players you're probably looking to move.

Teams in UEFA always struggle on the weekend because of the Thursday games:

    - is it always true?
    - is it a myth?
    - should Spurs and Swansea be avoided because of it?
    - is it more of a problem in the 2nd half of the season than the 1st?

They have a huge enough squad, with enough talent to be able to cope with it and not make any excuses. That I say about Spurs. I really really don't think it should be an issue for them. Din't see the second half, but in the first Arsenal played better. Simple

I think if Wenger doesn't sign another striker then I'll be going Giroud. Benteke is the better player but I expect Giroud to get a lot more chances form the likes of Santi, Walcott (and hopefully Ozil) than Benteke will get from Gabby and Weimann.

No RVP this week could be painful though (expecting a United backlask).

I agree. But you just have to look at the Sturridge/Giroud/Soldado frontline and trust that it will be worth not having RVP.

Maybe I'll follow your lead and get Giroud if Arsenal don't sign a striker. Worried about not having benteke, but I can always swap Soldado for him if necessary.

I can see both sides on the wildcard for this week. We have enough info to show defenders are going to get more bonus this year. Yes, clean sheets might go down. But still. My team is set up with cheaper defenders. That has worked well for me in the past, but I don't want to fall too far back. I am investing in some nailed on defenders from the big clubs.

Plus, with bale gone and mata out of favour, there are not a lot of big mid options. Of course, some will emerge and i will set my roster to keep two or three big mid spots available. But I am content to take some money out of the mid and put more at the back in one shot, rather than take a few hits and still have it take a while to catch up to the new bonus point era. I feel I can make a decent gain right now. I can invest those points in hits for the future if I need to.

Of course, I need to choose wisely to set myself up. Otherwise, it is a waste that I will regret. In summary, I don't think there is one clearly correct choice on wildcarding now or saving. But I get the reason for reworking the roster now.

Really dissapointed how my picks failed at once in same gameweek!

Lost H2H in Ligue 1 too.
    No worries though....will bounce back!

On a wildcard and finding the same problem i did with the original team.
RVP just messes it up . I just cannot find a way round it , going to have to be
extra brave , fight the fear and go without.

Giroud Benteke and Sturridge are just too good to mess with, combine them
with a strong defence and a couple of big mids and they going to kill any RVP team

I think you could well be right....but I'm taking him as captain GW4 and then shipping out if one goal or less, moving to your team over next couple weeks......

My thinking as well. Going to non RVP just means ship him and upgrade a discount mid. Plus maybe another defender later on.

Exactly this........Chelsea mid and third striker from Triggers three and then cash in bank for def or other.

Also need to keep an eye on Suarez return. RVP to Suarez is an easy move.....

I'd agree if we weren't allowed transfers.

It isn't hard to go from RVP to no-rvp in a few weeks though, so if it means you have him as captain for the easiest game of the season, probably worth it.

GW4: golden boot winner at home vs favs to go down, with a point to prove.

I am finding it too hard to resist, snd have been through the exact same thought process as you many times!

OP I have the same front line as you do, I WC'd myself, and I agree with your assessment.

I see no need to look over my shoulder until all of the following apply:
      - 2013 RVP becomes 2012, which won't happen until
      - the balance of Moyes-era United pull it together,
      AND
      - RVP (c) + (pick a 5.0 fwd) consistently outscore the lesser 2 of (benteke/giroud/saldado/sturridge, captain who you may)

      Good fogging luck.

    basically.

    Lamela + Chambers

    or

    HBA + Zaba

Created some space for himself in the box at times even though he only played a few minutes. Might come good once he settles.

There wasn't any noticeable "in the hole" player yesterday, since Soldado himself was quite deep in the average positions, Chadli and Townsend were both higher than him on the pitch overall...

I reckon at home they will play Eriksen in the hole though, with Paulinho bombing forward at will...
