Scout Report – Christian Eriksen

After announcing the capture of Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela a week last Friday, Tottenham rounded off a hectic day of transfer activity by acquiring Christian Eriksen from Ajax Amsterdam. With just one year left on his contract at the Dutch club, Spurs were able to snap up the 21-year-old for a bargain fee reported to be in the region of £11m to take their summer spending past the £100m mark:

The Dane is the eighth new face to arrive at the north London club as Andre Villas-Boas splashes the cash accrued from the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. Following months of speculation linking him to Liverpool, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, Eriksen revealed Tottenham’s long-term interest was key to his decision:

“There were a lot of rumours, but I only felt right about the approach from Tottenham. The club followed me for a long time and really showed intent. It was the whole package that attracted me. I spoke briefly with the manager and my impression is that he is a very good manager. The goal is to challenge for the title. That is what the club wants and that is what I want. From the conversations I have had, they have indicated that they see me as an attacking midfielder, a creative player. They have also told me that you are expected to fight for a spot on the team because there are a lot of good players here. But, of course, I hope things will fall to my advantage.”

The History

A prodigious talent, Eriksen’s youth career began in his native country with Odense Boldklub where he quickly caught the attention of a number of major clubs. After trials with Chelsea, United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan, the playmaker opted to join Ajax’s youth system back in 2008.

Handed his first-team debut midway through the 2009/10 season, Eriksen produced just a single assist from 15 appearances (10 from the bench) as he was slowly introduced to the senior side. Firmly established as a regular the following year, Eriksen returned six goals and 11 assists from 28 appearances before stepping up again over the next couple of campaigns, producing a further 17 goals and 36 assists from 66 Eredivisie matches as he helped the Amsterdam side to three consecutive Dutch league titles. Eriksen also registered two goals and three assists from four league games this term prior to his move to White Hart Lane.

On the international stage, he has represented Denmark at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 a total of 38 times and notched 12 goals. Eriksen has also received 37 caps for the senior side, finding the net on four occasions.

The Prospects

Despite the multitude of midfield options available to Villas-Boas, Eriksen is expected to quickly establish himself as a regular in the Spurs starting XI. The main point of contention, however, is just where he will fit into the Tottenham side – at Ajax, he was fielded on the left of a midfield three as part of an inverted triangle, with one player sitting in front of the back-four and two pushing on in a 4-3-3 formation. Such a scenario could see a more defensively-disciplined player such as Sandro or Etienne Capoue given the job of screening the backline, allowing Eriksen, along with either Paulinho or Mousa Dembele, the chance to bomb forward and support Roberto Soldado.

Alternatively, Villas-Boas could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he opted for last season. The Spurs boss retained this system for the Gameweek 1 win over Crystal Palace, with Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked in behind Soldado, before shifting to a 4-3-3 in the subsequent two league fixtures. A role in “the hole” could be on the cards for the Dane if his manager chooses to go down this route, with Sigurdsson and the likes of Lewis Holtby looking set to drop further down the pecking order.

Speaking to the press after Sunday’s north London derby defeat at the Emirates, however, Villas-Boas offered up a somewhat ambiguous statement on the matter. The Portuguese boss conceded a 4-3-3 was “more or less the way we want to go forward this season,” before going on to praise Eriksen’s abilities by saying, “He is a wonderful creative player.. a good solution for our No 10 position”, then followed that up with, “In between those systems we will fall”.

Even the Spurs fans sites are uncertain of their manager’s intentions but whichever tactical set-up he ultimately decides upon, there is no question Villas-Boas must afford Soldado greater support up front. The Spaniard has been far too isolated in the past couple of games as the lone striker – an injection of creativity in the middle of the park is essential if Spurs are to get the best out of the former Valencia forward and Eriksen’s assured touch, vision and ability with either foot looks the ideal solution.

Coming in at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 7.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team Eriksen’s delivery from set-pieces and corners, allied with a penchant for hitting the net from distance, makes him a real contender for our five-man midfields. With Lamela priced at 9.0 in FPL, the Dane’s more budget-friendly cost may well persuade owners to take a punt and also afford Soldado’s owners a greater degree of optimism, with the forward relying purely on spot-kicks as a source of goals thus far.

While the spotlight shines brightly on the other side of north London following Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal, Eriksen’s capture could turn out just as significant. Immediately, the Dane has been handed a kind run of fixtures to quickly make an impact – with home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, allied with trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, Villas-Boas’ side will be confident of returning to winning ways as they face up to life in the top-flight without a certain Welshman.

Not for a long time. Since the days of Lescott, Laursen, Dunne and co when the defenders were big scorers. Could pay off well but would test the water first with 4-3-3.

Repost (30th post on the late page =( ) :
In hope of the prospect of Ravel Morrison getting a game (so I can field a good Brady rotation without a trade) I goggled West Ham injuries. Much to my delight I saw a few pages that suggest Downing could be out for a few weeks, On closer inspection I saw Joe Cole is doubtful as well which leads to even better odds of Ravel getting a game. He had a great preseason and most recently scored in the Capitol One Clash against Cheltenham (Notably Allardyce publicly called for him to seize the most of his opportunities and he did by putting in a MOTM performance)

I hope this is his opportunity he can finally solidify a place in the team.

    Brady/Ravel rotations fixtures:

    Pretty good I think.
Anyone else kept a hold of young Ravel?

Wow that is pretty sweet. Pablo has been on my radar, even before his points this gameweek. His points per game last season indicate he is very good value (up there with Sess and Oscar both Priced higher than him)

Still for the value of 1.6 mil and 1 trade I think I might like Ravel better (for my team that is)..

I am also reluctant to double up on Swansea attackers and even though I don't have one I wouldn't want to close the door on Bony and Michu if they decide to start firing. Particularly Bony, who will be a perfect replacement for Lukaku if he doesn't get gametime/goals. (Lukaku: next game week trade)

How does this side look this week if I were to take a 4 point hit.

    Migs
    Coleman Zabaleta Collins (Turner, Ward)
    Walcott Mirallas Nolan Kim (Snodgrass)
    RVP (c) Benteke (vc) Lambert

Moves this week will be Anelka & Dzeko -> Benteke & Lambert.

Regardless of the rest of the squad, that seems like an excellent upgrade so I think a hit is definitely justified -- if Rooney is fit I will be doing Dzeko to Lambert/Bent for free, so being able to do Anelka for Benteke is fantastic.

Yeah, I done Hazard -> Nolan last week in order to be able to afford it. It was disheartening seen all the strikers rolling in the points when I was stuck with Anelka. Dzeko did ok for me (8, 1) so could have been worse but its time to go!

Not sure I would take a hit to bring in Benteke. I have him and hope he does well, but Newcastle have picked up back to back clean sheets and to me Benteke's prospects are always a little lofty on this site.

£9m for a Villa striker is not value. I got him for the double gameweek and he will go in a couple of weeks on a wildcard.

Posted this on DZ. Shameless reasking the question.

Mirallas or Coutinho OUT for financing Benteke?

Mirallas got the more goal scoring threat statistically with most shots on box. Plays up front. Just scored in friendly. Kinda been unlucky with the finishing though. I like to spread my risk since I have Sturridge. The initial gut has always been to keep him. But tough fixtures ahead.

Coutinho may play in the hole from now on with Moses arrival. Bright fixture ahead. I have Sturridge who might be injured, and if he is, I would like someone from Liverpool and Coutinho is the other best player to score points. The RMT certainly thinks so. But has been lacking good performance other than GW 1 in the wings.

    So...?

Mirallas out for me. Not seeing form, confidence and results, as well looking at some tougher fixtures ahead. Not sure the deadline transfer balance has convinced me he is more likely increase his FPL points potencial.

I think Cout has most of the above in his favour

Can easily downgrade Coutinho to Mirallas if I'm wrong. Or move Cout onto another heavy if they are both underwhelming (IMO most likely scenario).

Your whole midfield looks a punt to me. Risky when using your WC so early in the season. I know Ozil is quality but Walcott is more established and more likely for profit from Ozil's assist making. Scorers and defenders are hogging the BPs, not the assisters. Ben Arfa is hot and cold, Silva injured, seems Moyes doesn't fancy Kagawa at all.

I'm in the whatever set of players that I choose that gets me the most points camp providing I player a minimum of three defenders, two midfielders and a striker.

Amazing how people think they need to be so rigid in their formation that it will correlate to the number of points they get. For what it's worth I always feel mid/for offer a greater upside given the possibility of a few goals and assists whereas defenders are often capped with a clean sheet. Now I appreciate that defenders have picked up a fair share of the bonus, but stating the obvious there has been a larger amount of clean sheets so far.

Basically pick the best 11 you can afford, without taking many hits.

Well I'd be happier when he's gone so I won't need to use it. We won titles before him, with him and will do so after him. I think he's started to mirror Clough - not to say he would take us down, I just don't believe he can put a title winning side together again. All the furore of signing Ozil, we still didn't address the defense - Mertesacker is simply not good enough at the highest level (Gets ready for the 'We had the 2nd best defense in the league last season' counter argument).

Just a shame we don't have a 25 year old Tony Adams (or even a Sol Campbell) - we'd challenge for the title with that leadership and quality defending. In fact there is the frustration that the margin is quite small at the very top, but at varying times in the past 7/8 years our need for a goalkeeper, central defender, defensive midfielder has been alarming, yet everytime one part gets addressed the frailty appears elsewhere.

Personally I think we'd be crazy to let him go. Who do you replace him with? We were just above mid table team when he turned up who occasionally won trophies. He turned up from nowhere and revolutionised English football and turned us into a big player. He's also put us into a stadium which has given the revenue streams for us to now spend proper money which we generate ourselves. I feared for him a couple of weeks ago but the purchase of Ozil could finally see a change of tack from him. I thought he might be too stubborn to change his ways but maybe now he is adapting. We need more but now we have signed one big player, more will follow. We just needed one.
I also think Flamini is an excellent signing for us. So versatile and proven and he can help us get over our frailties in the short term before getting in the players we need to have a realistic chance of winning the league again next season.

To me, the Sack Wenger camp made more sense when it seemed he couldn't unearth or attract quality players. I def believe Ozil came predominantly because of Wenger's reputation and player development. He man still has drawing power, and as such has many opportunities, hopefully at Arsenal.

What he has acheived at Arsenal is incredible. And to keep us where he has while paying for that stadium and not buying players is fantastic. With our revenue streams we will now be able to stand up to the likes of Chelski and Man Citeh who have had billions invested in their clubs from the oligarts. We raise the money ourself. It's our club made with our money.

Yeah i figured most ppl would say B, 8 point hits are frowned upon here

Only reason i want ivan out is:
      - koscielny is much cheaper and will get more points then ivan in the next few gws
      - ivan isnt fully nailed on
      - going for koscielny frees up funds to get an upgrade for brady especially considering next gw where tarabt/kim/brady have bad fixtures

      Nah..
      Only forward line is fine..

Whittaker, Dawson - could be dropped out of favor
Toure - I don't think he will deliver that much
Ozil - I like the punt, but I would take Walcott for him

      I would do Dawson + Ozil + Yaya -> Mert/Kosc + Walcott + Lampard

Love the fickleness. Connolly who has started every game in defense for Cardiff is about to drop in price.

Few thought he would be the starter pre-season and he was barely owned (currently selected by .2%). Ah well, kudos to those who picked him ahead of Brayford.

Brayford is a funny one. There's a lot of speculation that he fell out with Mackay shortly after signing.

Cardiff have signed another rightback, Theodophile-Catherine, which is more competition for Connolly. Maybe that's part of the reason for his drop.

Any money? Strong bones w GKs, Zab, Coleman, Theo, Lamp, HBA and great strikers.

Two of cheap defs and Brady Barkley have to play each week -- I know this seems backwards, but I would prefer five guys for two spots rather than four guys for one. Makes the selection a bit easier.

I think the moral of the story here is to not make your transfers early during an international break and to save a FT the week before a break if you can. we've already seen injuries to GJ, sturridge, silva, and oscar and there could be more before the break is over. granted some of these players might be be fine by the weekend but you don't know

The problem is each year, more and more people play and more and more people knee jerk early transfers......prices start rising so quickly, you can end up missing the player you want.

Agree having a FT going into the break is wise.....oh what a luxury....

No idea how to play it this week with the injury doubts. Which of the following looks the best option?
              A) Silva + Sturridge > RVP + Brady
              B) Toure + Silva > Vidic + Michu/Leopard
              C) Toure + Sturridge > Vidic + Giroud

All would be for a -4 hit.

the best option is to wait to hear how bad these injuries are. i'd wait til the pressers at the end of the week. also waiting is good cuz you could pop up with a bigger injury in your squad. or say rvp gets injured after you've already transferred him in, how much would that suck?

I'm waiting until Friday. Not risking anything because I can afford the moves even with price drops. Was just getting some planning done ahead of time, but it does depend on injuries and if I can support Man United without wanting RVP to run riot!
