The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Tottenham’s summer signing from Valencia finally produces the goods as Andre Villas-Boas’ side east past Villa. England’s latest wing sensation also plays a part, whilst four alterations from the visitors may signal the exit of a certain Danish playmaker from many a Fantasy line-up:

The Game Changer

A goal and assist in this afternoon’s win over Villa brings Roberto Soldado back into the Fantasy spotlight.

Dropped for Jermain Defoe last time out, the Spaniard regained his starting berth for the trip to Villa Park and repaid Andre Villas-Boas’ faith by playing a part in both the visitors’ goals. Today’s strike was Soldado’s first from open play this season but in spite of a stuttering start, he has, nevertheless, remained key for his side – this afternoon’s haul means he has played a part in five of Tottenham’s eight league goals this term.

Sold on by considerable numbers of Fantasy managers over the last few Gameweeks, Soldado’s display rewarded the patience of the 10% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who kept faith in his talents. Now down to 9.2, he has home games against Hull and Newcastle in the next three to help build on today’s display and with confidence flourishing, those looking for an alternative to the current template may just decide he’s worth a flutter.

The Underused

Andros Townsend’s outstanding week continued after the Spurs winger grabbed the opener in today’s win.

Despite netting for England last week, Townsend had managed just a single assist in six league appearances, with his penchant for a long-range effort reaping little reward. His opener at Villa Park, whilst somewhat fortuitous, is likely to see increased interest ahead of next week’s visit of Hull –priced at just 5.6 in FPL, he’s currently owned by under 3% of managers.

Although Tottenham’s multitude of midfield talent means his long-term starting berth is far from nailed-on, Townsend’s rich vein of form looks likely to keep him at the head of the queue for a role on the right – Aaron Lennon’s injury comeback will only increase the competition, though.

The Selection Poser

Villas-Boas’ quartet of changes merely emphasised the strength in depth available at the Lane this season. Christian Eriksen’s owners will undoubtedly be the most disappointed after the Dane dropped out of the starting XI for the first time since making his debut in Gameweek 4.

Currently sitting in over 6% of FPL teams, the exodus is likely to get underway over the next few hours. With so many cheaper alternatives guaranteeing starts and greater returns, Eriksen’s owners will be unlikely to remain patient – there is a theory, though, that his omission was perhaps only down to his international exertions over the past week or so. At the back, Villas-Boas’ decision to hand Vlad Chiriches his first start could soon have Michael Dawson owners on edge, too – with Jan Vertonghen expected to return to the centre once Danny Rose is finally fit, question marks remain over who is likely to get the nod as the Belgian’s partner.

Christian Benteke’s return to action may have failed to ignite the hosts’ faltering attack but it will, nonetheless, have Fantasy managers on alert. Emerging from the bench around the hour mark, the Belgian – now down to 8.8 in FPL – will surely be restored to the starting line-up next time around as Paul Lambert looks to address an attack that has now failed to score in each of the last two.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Thought he was their most threatening midfielder today, on a par with Townsend anyway. Always seems to be in the right positions

I would probably just play Delph if Davies is only going to be out for one game. Not worth taking a hit for that really.

I would get Ramsey in, Pauliniho sometimes plays deep and will come out with 2 points whereas with Ozil and intricate players around him, Ramsey can receive the ball from so much outlets. Especially the way Arsenal are playing at the moment, Spurs seem to grind out games by 1-0 wins mostly.

with Champion's League coming midweek and Dzeko on simmer on the bench, I think a bit of a risk to captain, though he'd probably get a 30 minute sub appearance at worst

he is on fire, yet doesn't scare me enough to own him at 11

While we're at it on the Champions League front: Bayern Munich will be probably be without Dante (ankle, up to two weeks out) and Ribéry is a doubt after picking up a knock on his ankle in training. Ribéry himself thinks that he'll be fit to play in midweek though.

Schalke - Hildebrand & Boateng will probably be back after missing the 3-2 win at Braunschweig, but Höger (cruciate ligament) could be out for six months after having to leave the pitch after only half-an-hour. An X-ray on Monday will say for sure how serious the injury is. Alternatives would be Jones and Goretzka.

Bayer Leverkusen rested Donati, Spahic and Can against Hoffenheim, but they'll be fine. Lars Bender is still injured though, as is the Hoffenheim side-netting.

FC Basel rested Diaz and only gave Salah 18 minutes as sub in an impressive 3-0 win against second-placed St. Gallen, but they'll be at full strength.

No, I don't play fantasy football for leagues that I'm interested in as an observer.

Might sound daft, but the only reason that my friends and I started doing FPL three years ago was because we didn't feel any emotional connection to the English Premier League any more (expensive tickets, bad match day atmosphere, predictable league finishes, laptop 'fans' who couldn't even find their clubs on a map, etc).

If the clubs were reducing the game to a series of statistics ("How high is the profit margin?", "How big is the TV deal?"), then we thought we'd react by playing a game (FPL) that did exactly the same thing.

Yeah, pretty much. Mind you, I'm fully behind what Paul Lambert's doing at Villa since he took over, so my enthusiasm's returned a bit.

But you don't observe matches the same way when you're doing Fantasy football, do you? It's more a case of data collection - and (this season) suffering.

    Current team for next week:

    Mignolet (Davis)
Vidic - Walker - Mertesacker (Shaw - Chester)
Michu - Oscar - Siggy - Ramsey (Morrison)
    Sturridge - Giroud - Lukaku

    0FT £3.5 in bank

    Do I:

    A) Hold tight.

    B) Bite the bullet and get Ozil in before his price rise & in time for the game against CRY? Would have to do Siggy & Mertesacker -> Ozil & Chico for a -8

-8 is a big hit so it all depends on your ambition really what your trying to win or if you really want Ozil long term? You already have double Arsenal after Palace they have Liverpool and United?

I do take your point. I feel Ozil may be a season keeper, so if I'm going to get him in, I don't want to pay any more than I can.

And Liverpool and United have been conceding so that doesn't concern me.

He's looks quite promising in my opinion.

Could he be another player crushed by the burden of an expecting nation?

That's what I mean, there's no doubt he has potential but showing all his touches on Sky Sports after the match and Yorkie and Glen Hoddle salivating over him is just way too premature imo. When he played for QPR last year, people just seen him as a reject of Spurs even though he did show glimmers of what he can do. They are on about him being a direct replacement to Bale, no comparison imo, 1st goal today and it was a cross shot.

Pundits talk out their arses and agreed far too premature but hes flavour of the month after his performance against Poland. He is quite direct in my opinion direct players can be found out eventually.

Pyro and flares make a good atmosphere, but throwing them onto a pitch is pushing the limits. If more action is taken to prevent pyros and flares, Spurs fans are to blame.

Despite Soldado's massive haul, he did have only 1 attempt, with which he scored.

Do you reckon he can live up to the pre-season hype? Or is it time to shift to Benteke while he's cheap?
