The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Tottenham’s summer signing from Valencia finally produces the goods as Andre Villas-Boas’ side east past Villa. England’s latest wing sensation also plays a part, whilst four alterations from the visitors may signal the exit of a certain Danish playmaker from many a Fantasy line-up:

The Game Changer

A goal and assist in this afternoon’s win over Villa brings Roberto Soldado back into the Fantasy spotlight.

Dropped for Jermain Defoe last time out, the Spaniard regained his starting berth for the trip to Villa Park and repaid Andre Villas-Boas’ faith by playing a part in both the visitors’ goals. Today’s strike was Soldado’s first from open play this season but in spite of a stuttering start, he has, nevertheless, remained key for his side – this afternoon’s haul means he has played a part in five of Tottenham’s eight league goals this term.

Sold on by considerable numbers of Fantasy managers over the last few Gameweeks, Soldado’s display rewarded the patience of the 10% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who kept faith in his talents. Now down to 9.2, he has home games against Hull and Newcastle in the next three to help build on today’s display and with confidence flourishing, those looking for an alternative to the current template may just decide he’s worth a flutter.

The Underused

Andros Townsend’s outstanding week continued after the Spurs winger grabbed the opener in today’s win.

Despite netting for England last week, Townsend had managed just a single assist in six league appearances, with his penchant for a long-range effort reaping little reward. His opener at Villa Park, whilst somewhat fortuitous, is likely to see increased interest ahead of next week’s visit of Hull –priced at just 5.6 in FPL, he’s currently owned by under 3% of managers.

Although Tottenham’s multitude of midfield talent means his long-term starting berth is far from nailed-on, Townsend’s rich vein of form looks likely to keep him at the head of the queue for a role on the right – Aaron Lennon’s injury comeback will only increase the competition, though.

The Selection Poser

Villas-Boas’ quartet of changes merely emphasised the strength in depth available at the Lane this season. Christian Eriksen’s owners will undoubtedly be the most disappointed after the Dane dropped out of the starting XI for the first time since making his debut in Gameweek 4.

Currently sitting in over 6% of FPL teams, the exodus is likely to get underway over the next few hours. With so many cheaper alternatives guaranteeing starts and greater returns, Eriksen’s owners will be unlikely to remain patient – there is a theory, though, that his omission was perhaps only down to his international exertions over the past week or so. At the back, Villas-Boas’ decision to hand Vlad Chiriches his first start could soon have Michael Dawson owners on edge, too – with Jan Vertonghen expected to return to the centre once Danny Rose is finally fit, question marks remain over who is likely to get the nod as the Belgian’s partner.

Christian Benteke’s return to action may have failed to ignite the hosts’ faltering attack but it will, nonetheless, have Fantasy managers on alert. Emerging from the bench around the hour mark, the Belgian – now down to 8.8 in FPL – will surely be restored to the starting line-up next time around as Paul Lambert looks to address an attack that has now failed to score in each of the last two.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

How many midfielders do you own that you bought for 6 or less?

What is the right number of these to own when there's:
Ramsey (if you bought before 6), Barkely, RMorrison, Amalfitano, Lallana, Brady, Whittingham, Townsend, Wilshere, Shelvey, Mutch & Howson (2 goals in last 2)

I've got 3 of these budgets and 2 premium mids, and have a hard time justifying switching to having 3 premium mids under the current circumstances.

can't ditch him until after GW17

fixtures too good, and he'll get in on the scoring

just one of those days, today

checked RMT in members area though GW17 comparing Hazard, Michu & Oscar for my sanity, negligible differences

if you intend to play 343, i suppose 2 premium mids and 2 budget mids is a good indicator, along with a premium mid or Ramsey who is delivering returns like one.

janujaz played well in last match.... could've even got a goal and the assist for the only goal had rooney been able to hit the target... I have him and planning to give him another start...

I doubt Baines will get a CS... but, then again one doesn't keep baines for a CS... your decision

It looks good....but then why was it so horrible this week? Because I should have captained Ozil like you, the master!

Vidic has to play over Januzaj? Why? Januzaj looks like he has more potential than United's awful defense lately.

Also, why Barkley away over Januzaj at home?

I also think home to fulham makes Clyne must play. I was honestly gonna bench Ravel and Vidic.

I'll admit I got a tad lucky. Sol>Luka for a hit would have meant i'd have captained luka too. Would have been a disaster.

I think your decision may become easier if Vidic isn't fit anyways.

Villa defence looks awful (I mean, even Soldado scored from open play). So I'd really start Barkley.

Stoke attack are looking horrible even at home. Pretty sure even a hapless United team are strong faves to keep a CS next week. So, Vidic (along with his goal threat)

Close call between Januzaj and Clyne for me. Ravel benched yet again (and brace yourself for another RavMo haul).

Start Clyne, Vidic and Barkley imo. Good chance of clean sheets there and I don't think Januzaj will have it easy against Stoke, likewise Ravel away to Swansea.

by the way, i still feel good about Amalfitano for the long haul (saw your post long after the fact before). RavMo is certainly cheaper and comparable, but I think Amalfitano will have his days, and will probably start him GW10.

When Rose returns next week will Dawson keep his spot? Everton defence is looking a little shaky (Coleman) and so is Uniteds defense (Vidic) as well as attack (Rooney).

So who do you really want? I'd sell any one of Dawson, Vidic or Coleman, probably the one with the worst fixture. Then bring in a Swansea defender who have a nice run of fixtures. Then I'd probably carry over the extra transfer and have two next week where you will want City and Chelsea coverage.

a bit early, but I'm thinking about GWs 17-20 (the holiday games) with my transfers now

to that point, Coleman has some good fixtures in that span

not sure you need to make a transfer either pending more news on Vidic

Paulinho's the only one to fuss with, I think, but he seems likely enough to do something soon and not sure its worth mucking about

hmm... have a nice tour then...
could swap for paulinho. Hull isn't that bad defensively. the reason i suggested lallana is that he has 3 in a row whereas paulinho has 1 to go, if u count hull as a easy opponent..

Or, for future uses, bring a swansea defender. u don't need to play him this week.

Both the transfer options can only look useful since u have an extra FT... otherwise what a team

Pondering a few options right now, would love to get a little feedback

    Mignolet
    BAINES(avl), Coleman, Mertisacker, Clyne, Vlaar
    ERIKSEN, HBA(sun), Michu, Ramsey, Barkley
    ROONEY, Sturridge, Giroud
    2FT's. Bank 0.2m

    OPTION 1
    GW9 Eriksen -> Townsend(HULL)/Januzaj(STO), save extra transfer
    GW10 Rooney -> Aguero, HBA -> Hazard

This options allow me to keep HBA(sun) and Rooney(STO) for another fixture till the City/Chelsea game is out of the way. Is it worth backing Januzaj or Townsend (too risky?) and can anyone else offer an alternative idea?

Maybe. But I'd want both HBA and Eriksen out with 2FTs.

They will both be out over two weeks (allowing HBA one last hurrah playing striker against Sunderland).

Like me above ^ trying to figure out a free transfer.
Eriksen was rested I believe so maybe he's worth holding, though you may get 2 price rises this GW with Townsend ( though I think he'll stink up your Mids).

I would take a punt on getting rid of HBA.

See I think I'd rather get rid of Eriksen, I genuinely think he's been dropped whereas HBA has been reinstated as a striker and plays Sunderland this week.

Fair enough Ryan. I think Sund are due a win sooner rather than later. If I was a betting man I'd be getting Remy only from Newc but that's just me. 🙂

You wouldn't recommend getting either of them? Hazard has started every game when fit and seems to be the most nailed on Chelsea player. Townsend is in crazy hot form right now so surely won't be dropped in a hurry.

I'm iffy. I am personally not getting either.

I think Gaz, some weeks ago, made the best case for Townsend remaining nailed on (that AVB knows his career is at a make or break stage, and he's hot, and needs/merits to be coddled forward).

I am a big Mourinho fan, and I don't get what he's doing this season yet. Hoping I figure out by January WC which Chelsea mid I want, if any. Right now, can't convince myself there's a standout,

Also still worried about Hazard's recurring ankle issues.

So you'd suggest avoiding Chelsea attack all together? (not a bad option).

              Only suggesting it to myself.

Can see it ending very badly (for me) and hesitant to recommend this path to others.

Admittedly, for a knee jerk moment yesterday, I was going to do Ramsey to Hazard, and then Ramsey came on and I remembered by defense is a shambles (as my back 4 yielded 6 points this week).

      Konnichiwa Ryan,
eriksen should leave your team... HBA definitely should stay for the sun match... sadly, i haven't seen him do anything in last match... haven't seen his face for once.....

you could consider both town and lallana....

I'm a Chelsea supporter. still i find the hazard goals a bit hazardous for the opponents....
all 3 goals of his looked strange in my eyes... ENR seems to fancy Hazard.... to be honest, chelsea mid looks very shaky. from a top side i'd expect more goals from them... oscar seems a safer option to get around 8/9 points and hazard might give more points but for that we'd have to wait a longer period...

Is there anyone who can almost guarantee huge points in the coming weeks with these easy chelsea fixtures?

this is why I'm staying away

Chelsea's play looks a bit uptight and stifled this season, like a guy at a dance club wearing a sweater vest. Sure, there's pretty women talking to him, but still, something's not right.

hm... but, with the fixtures they've got u can't resist them for long..... i just wonder how did people give captaincy to hazard this week.... more like a wishful thinking than a logical one

Not sold on anyone else yet.

u didn't get much point from Gk then... my friend has had Cech and Boruc from GW1... he missed all 4 back to back clean sheets from Southampton (GW4-7). I'm even unhappy with my Migno... Boruc for me when i get the chance...

Oh. I know. Not been happy about a few of those muck-ups (including missing Cech's clean sheet at Old Trafford). However, sticking with my game plan there that I had at the start. As long as those 2 stay healthy, I'll still own them in GW38.

I've just had a look at your team... you too have that GK DUO my friend has.... great combo.... i don't get it to be honest.... do they rotate well?

Agreed, they're season keepers[as in this Keepers are to be Kept:P]

                  no worries

                  i shall sleep soon

rotations is pretty okay, Boruc fills in well the handful of the games you don't want Cech starting (like this week... cue Chelsea clean sheet against ManC...)... *if* Cech were on form

if I have them both all the way, expect Chelsea to have more weeks without games when Boruc will hopefully cover; and then some DGWs with Cech... but that's after the January WCs

                    good strategy, must admit....

I'm looking for a chelsea CS too as i have defender and no city attacker 😛 ...

by the way, did a small calculation. by the end of this gw; i should be one point clear from you.... given jedinak starts and plays for 60 minutes [with my current team's behavior, that seems too much to ask now ]
