The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Tottenham’s summer signing from Valencia finally produces the goods as Andre Villas-Boas’ side east past Villa. England’s latest wing sensation also plays a part, whilst four alterations from the visitors may signal the exit of a certain Danish playmaker from many a Fantasy line-up:

The Game Changer

A goal and assist in this afternoon’s win over Villa brings Roberto Soldado back into the Fantasy spotlight.

Dropped for Jermain Defoe last time out, the Spaniard regained his starting berth for the trip to Villa Park and repaid Andre Villas-Boas’ faith by playing a part in both the visitors’ goals. Today’s strike was Soldado’s first from open play this season but in spite of a stuttering start, he has, nevertheless, remained key for his side – this afternoon’s haul means he has played a part in five of Tottenham’s eight league goals this term.

Sold on by considerable numbers of Fantasy managers over the last few Gameweeks, Soldado’s display rewarded the patience of the 10% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who kept faith in his talents. Now down to 9.2, he has home games against Hull and Newcastle in the next three to help build on today’s display and with confidence flourishing, those looking for an alternative to the current template may just decide he’s worth a flutter.

The Underused

Andros Townsend’s outstanding week continued after the Spurs winger grabbed the opener in today’s win.

Despite netting for England last week, Townsend had managed just a single assist in six league appearances, with his penchant for a long-range effort reaping little reward. His opener at Villa Park, whilst somewhat fortuitous, is likely to see increased interest ahead of next week’s visit of Hull –priced at just 5.6 in FPL, he’s currently owned by under 3% of managers.

Although Tottenham’s multitude of midfield talent means his long-term starting berth is far from nailed-on, Townsend’s rich vein of form looks likely to keep him at the head of the queue for a role on the right – Aaron Lennon’s injury comeback will only increase the competition, though.

The Selection Poser

Villas-Boas’ quartet of changes merely emphasised the strength in depth available at the Lane this season. Christian Eriksen’s owners will undoubtedly be the most disappointed after the Dane dropped out of the starting XI for the first time since making his debut in Gameweek 4.

Currently sitting in over 6% of FPL teams, the exodus is likely to get underway over the next few hours. With so many cheaper alternatives guaranteeing starts and greater returns, Eriksen’s owners will be unlikely to remain patient – there is a theory, though, that his omission was perhaps only down to his international exertions over the past week or so. At the back, Villas-Boas’ decision to hand Vlad Chiriches his first start could soon have Michael Dawson owners on edge, too – with Jan Vertonghen expected to return to the centre once Danny Rose is finally fit, question marks remain over who is likely to get the nod as the Belgian’s partner.

Christian Benteke’s return to action may have failed to ignite the hosts’ faltering attack but it will, nonetheless, have Fantasy managers on alert. Emerging from the bench around the hour mark, the Belgian – now down to 8.8 in FPL – will surely be restored to the starting line-up next time around as Paul Lambert looks to address an attack that has now failed to score in each of the last two.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      I keep think each week that if you haven't got Ramsey yet you've missed the boat but he still keeps producing so at present he is a must have. Paulinho is good for the odd assist/goal every now and then but Townsend has the potential to explode with a huge bandwagon so if you're getting on it has to be soon

            It's risky I agree, but midfielders scored 4 goals for Arsenal this weekend, they seem to benefit from Giroud and his link-up play.
            Chelsea seem to be a huge rotation risk and somewhat inconsistent. But if someone in the Chelsea mid goes on a rampage, I'll have to consider him.

    Hi Guys

    Team at the moment:

    Boruc / Myhill
    Coleman / Whittaker / Dawson / Toure / Turner
    Oscar / Ramsey / Michu / Barkley / JWP
    RVP / Studge / Suarez

    What should be my first priority?

    1, Whittaker > Chico?
    2, JWP > Brady?
    3, Something else?

    Have 1 FT and 1.2 in the bank.

    Appreciate any opinions.

    Thanks

      JWP to RavMo conserves your bank

      JWP to Townsend if you want to chase a bandwagon

      Toure to GJohnson to upgrade your Liverpool coverage

      Whittaker to Vlaar... fixtures and form coming soon

      Hiya Pep

      Yeah, another lousy week. I managed 57 points but it'll probably be a red arrow after the auto-subs are done tomorrow. Usually scoring over the average gets you a green, I think. Strange year.

      Did you see the Arsenal game? Amazing football from the Gooners and young Ramsey looks like he's channeling Zidane or something. Very, very impressive - if they had a better defence they could actually win the league.

    Eriksen + Nastasic > Hazard + Chico

    Or should I look at a different mid?

          Nice. Yeah, Townsend's goal was lucky, but he played very well and came very close to further goals and assists, and looked a right handfull all evening.

          I didn't think Holtby did all that much yesterday so wouldn't be overly surprised if Eriksen came back in. Perhaps just Nasty -> Chico and save the other transfer? Risky, but if Eriksen starts at home to HUL you could end up kicking yourself....

        No Ramsey must be painful, but you have Ozil and the combination of ARS's fixtures stiffening and all our centre mids being available would sway me away from getting him now.

        From your shortlist I would say all are good picks, but Silva, Hazard & Oscar could perhaps wait a week given this week's fixture. Any interest in Aguero next week if you go for Townsend this week?

            Yeah that's true. Townsend would be a 3 week punt for me if I get him (becoming Walcott/Hazard thereafter).

            I think given you can get Aguero regardless I'd probably go for Hazard, although as said above, with Eriksen at home to HUL this week it can possibly wait a week. Might be worth waiting to see what team AVB plays on Thurs before pulling the trigger?

    Morning DZ, which of these routes look best?

    (A)
    GW9: Nolan -> Townsend/Paulinho
    GW10: Sturridge -> Aguero

    (B)
    GW9: Nolan -> Hazard
    GW10: Suarez -> Aguero

    (C)
    GW9: Nolan -> Hazard
    GW10: Sturridge -> Benteke

    If doing A or B then I may do Giroud -> Benteke in GW11.

    Boruc, Davis
    Baines, Terry, Toure, Clyne, Ward
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

      A for me looks good.

      Your opinion above is appreciated.

        Cheers - would you go Townsend over Paulinho?

          Yes. But not sold on Townsend just yet. Paulinho gets in to good positions but his finishing is atrocious.

            Yeah, he really should have scored a couple last night. 100% nailed on and great stats is very appealing though. He's had over 50% more total shots and shots in the box than Hazard!! Wow.
