The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Saturday’s events were dominated by Manchester City’s seven-goal haul as they destroyed a hapless Norwich City at the Etihad. With the points still being calculated and the performances still fresh in our mind, Manuel Pellegrini’s side dominate our early Gameweek thinking…

The Game Changer

Red hot form, top of the Captain Poll, the most transferred in player ahead of the Gameweek. The scene was set for Sergio Aguero to deliver and he didn’t disappoint. Those who took a hit to bring in the Argentine must be delighted – his 15-point return, with maximum bonus surely to follow, offered a handsome pay-off.

As we’ve written on these pages in recent weeks – Aguero has built a case to be considered “essential” even before today’s performance against Norwich. Looking at his numbers now, the lure to invest in Aguero is almost overwhelming.

He’s now scored in his last five league starts – collecting seven goals and five assists in that devastating spell. That’s seen Aguero hit the top of the overall FPL rankings and, even in a season where a case of heavy-hitting strikers have performed, he’s become difficult to ignore.

The threat of rotation and Aguero’s propensity to suffer injury provide the caveats. While City’s Champions League campaign and Manuel Pellegrini’s options in Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic cause some concern, it should be noted that Aguero has only failed to start one match when fully fit – the trip to Stoke City in Gameweek 4. Having dropped points at the Britannia, we have to wonder if Pellegrini has had a rethink when it comes to his prolific marksman. There’s little doubt that he has now become central to their title ambitions.

Certainly the argument that Aguero is a rotation risk is becoming increasingly muted as it continues to be drowned out by a torrent of goals and assists.

The Underused

With our forward lines packed with quality, there is an understandable reluctance to jump on Aguero’s form. While today’s returns made that stance harder to justify, the David Silva option in midfield does at least present another route to attempt to cover City’s unquenchable thirst for goals.

Silva’s ownership still sits at just 6% tonight and yet his 8-point return, with perhaps bonus points to follow, will mean that the Spaniard has shown strong consistency. He’s now returned goals or assists in five of his seven league appearances, while bonus points tonight would see him challenge at the top of the current midfield form rankings.

Yaya Toure’s huge ownership is perhaps the reason behind the reluctance to adopt Silva as a midfield option. Another set-piece goal for the Ivorian today will likely see his owners keep the faith, however, there is a strong argument to say that Silva, a cheaper alternative to Toure, will eventually surpass his team-mate’s points tally. Toure has relied on goals from three stunning free-kicks this season, whilst Silva is everywhere, providing incisive passes in the attacking third and a good level of efforts on goal from open play.

While the floodgates remain wide open for Pellegrini’s attack-minded outfit, Silva’s consistent supply of points looks assured.

The Selection Poser

Sticking with Pellegrini’s side, his decision to drop Joe Hart to the bench and retain Costel Pantilimon in goal has given Fantasy managers food for thought. Hart has never been a major temptation given his price point but Pantilimon is a different matter. At just 4.9, the Romanian would provide the cheapest route into the City back four from here on in.

Today’s clean sheet was the first since Gameweek 4 but, with the fixture list improving and with City well capable of dominating matches and starving opponents of possession, they may now be a case to consider their rearguard with a sub 5.0 FPL asset on offer. The issue, of course, is just how long Pellegrini will keep faith with Pantilimon given that, in World Cup year, he will be under pressure to recall Hart to the City goal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ramsey has just created the most extraordinary scenario which strikes the achilles heel of the experienced FPL manager. The casual gets in the player that gets the most points, taking into account good value. The experience manager assess the kneejerk reaction of such a trade by assessing the likelihood of further returns causing a thought process such as this...

    The experienced FPL manager

    - He's a deep lying mid. These players don't score regularly
    - Doesn't have a history of consistent scoring
    - Is not nailed on to start every week
    - Its Ramsey (he's not particularly good, bad past experiences etc)

Then Ramsey continues to bring home the points but the experienced manager stubbornly refuses to give in due to the above reasons and some new arguments such as...

    - His goal scoring potential is not sustainable
    - He will be rotated when everyone is fit
    - Let the casuals get him and fall into the obvious bandwagon trap
    - His ownership is too high so I won't gain any ground by buying him

This is the downward spiral of despair that only serious FPL managers experience. The casual would have given in weeks ago. I pity those who still refuse to get Ramsey in.

        I should add another point.

        - After being burned for so long, choosing to dig the toes in and refuse to get him under any circumstances.

Hmm, I wonder what would happen if he continues at his current scoring rate.

Would love to bring him in, but I already have Ozil, and am against having 2 midfielders from the same team.

+ I have no space for him in my team :/ . You think it's still worth getting him? Even this late?
And Ozil out Ramsey in seems a bit ludicrous.

He wont score goals as regularly, but I'm sure he'll continue to rack up the points. In unstoppable form. I agree, would bring him in if I could

The straight swap is probably worth it but I also think doubling up is a good idea. Arsenal always have goals in them and its no different to having a striker and a midfielder from the same team. The fact that Ramsey is so cheap also makes it worth while.

Wouldnt consider myself a casual and I have him (since about four weeks, was quite late getting him).

Six weeks ago I would agree with you. At this point, even with less than great fixtures incoming, he's superb value.

Your points above are so far from reality. He's not deep, he's surely nailed, he's red hot and getting passes in good areas, great assist potential, Arsenal on top form. Plus, his high ownership maybe not a factor since many experienced managers still don't have him?

Excuse me, 'he's not very good' 😆 ?

Prior to his injury he was the reason Arsene felt he could let Cesc go.

In fairness to the lad, only now he's finding his feet (literally) again.

Ok, no one was expecting his goal return but he was FFS canon fodder on here last year - sometimes unfairly so.

I think people have got so much wrapped up in the Wilshire 'hype' it's taken the pressure of Aaron and now people can see which player has the most class.

Good post this Ryan, worth of a hot topic !

While its interesting/ useful for people to share their reasoning, think this is dichotomous and the theory of "casuals" is bandied around too frequently to justify lost points. How "casual" are we talking, because many "casuals" would only pick on past (or purely previous) seasons performance... although I would agree, beyond the "casual" sub-group who aren't actually playing beyond WK1, might have a high propensity for knee-jerkism. Maybe "experienced" managers would have paid attention to pre-season form - applicable for ramsey, morrison, jacuzzi, barkley / everyone, and hence have ramsey from the kickoff. To the point, he is not that deep lying; he started to score *pre-injury*; value. If either casuals or experienced players, whoever they might be, aren't making rationalised decisions and confirming to a theme of either "giving in" vs "not giving in", then their season is over.

To put it more simply. There are those that study certain details to death, eg the 8 points that have been mentioned on FFS over the past 8 or so weeks. Then there are those that simply look at who the top scorers are, watch a few games, then buy that player in (the casual). I'm not going to try and define these groups any more than that. You might think that that is a little general but I think it still emphasises the point when making such a comparison for our purposes eg those that use FFS vs the rest (supposedly those that spend less than 20mins a week on FPL).

Based upon such an observation I believe there are many more reasons for the serious manager (FFS user) to not get Ramsey than the casual (20mins a week) player.

I'm very very tempted to swallow pride and get him this week - Granville has certainly benefited from arriving late to the party - but Dortmund, United and Southampton are Arsenal's next three. After that, I'm definitely going to be considering Walcott following the international break. I personally think Granville got on just in time - I'm not sure a trip to Old Trafford and a home clash with the meanest defence in the league is the right time to jump on.

It is highly improbable that Ramsey can maintain his current rate of scoring - even Wenger has come out and acknowledged that. Right now, he's gold, absolutely on fire but the "logic" of football says there has to be some regression. I also strongly believe that Walcott will come in, command starts and perhaps change Arsenal's pattern of play.

I basically studied Ramsey last night, I was like a Ramsey player cam.

I know the members stats, but the guy is there or there about in all the attacking players (in and on edge of the box)... I was toying with ditching for the sustainable reason, I've now massively reconsidered.

I also have deep seated mental problem that stops me from believing Arsenal can sustain their form and as soon as they revert to type Ramsey will stop producing too. Years of under achievement by them has caused my mindset, but just maybe this year will be different now that Ozil seems to have given them some self-belief. I'm still not getting Ramsey in whatever.

For those too stubborn to get him because they won't gain points on those that already have him, you have to accept the reality that it's a ten player game now, Ramsey being the constant 11th player in the team.

Biggest thing I've changed this season from seasons past is give in to bandwagons before it's too late.

Ahh, see I feel you've made an excellent case for what a statistical outlier Ramsey is...

He's converted an unbelievable 60% of his SoT into goals & further, had 43% of his 'chances created' net him returns.

This info, coupled with the eight or nine points you've made have settled it for me...

This may be the case but RVP last season consistently scored at an unreasonable conversion rate. Sometimes players in red hot form defy reason and continue to score regardless of conversion rates.

              Yes, & "sometimes" we shouldn't split Aces & 8's...

Gambling cliches aside, historically RVP converts about 40% of his SoT. Further, the majority of these attempts come from inside the box.

Ramsey on the other hand, has 23 goal attempts, 11 from inside the box, & has converted over 60% of his SoT.

              This is not sustainable.

Now, I'm not saying the man isn't worth his 7mil price tag but, I do see other heavy hitting midfielders that have better underlying statistics & superior fixtures which tempt me more...

Yup Ryan it’s a good read, and makes me rethink the importance of stats.

Would sometimes we read too much in underlying stats? It will be disaster to feel too excited about the amount of goal attempts by Taarabt last year or Townsend this year.

Why Ramsey’s conversion rate is an outlier now? Can we say the “quality” of his shots be far superior than others?

We need to accept that Ramsey has improved a whole lot this season. I will resemble him as the younger version of Lampard or Gerrard! So, should we adopt the stat of Ramsey’s previous seasons?

Another blind point is, those who only watch highlights may think that Ramsey's goals are just wonder-goals. But the truth is, those many he hasn't scored were also world-class strikes, but just saved by the GKs. If it's Joe Hart being the goalie all the time, Ramsey may have scored 4 more goals already!

Most importantly, he is only $7. I will be happy to pay this even if he produced 70% of the current points, in which his Points-per-Game would still outperform Oscar, Hazard, Gerrard, Mirallas and Michu.

All-in-all, this is a bandwagon of a player that perceived to be average due to his past and the normal stat, but actually turn out to be a top class scoring midfielder that he is destined to be an outlier. He has proved this since August, not the likes of Ben Arfa or Mirallas.

I would say he is still under-priced, if you agree that he should worth between $8 and $9. Using $7 for a big-hitter still seems a steal for me.

Nicely summed up. Its totally fair to compare him to the likes of Lampard and Gerard. He has come of age in style and its up to us as managers to recognise this and accept that he is a very good player now.

So, I see from you profile that you are a seasoned & exceptional FPL player.
I must say I'm very impressed with your consistency over the years.

That said, the gentleman above (@Ryan) presented a compelling case* for not bringing Ramsey into our sides:
(*Although somehow he doesn't believe it.)

        - He's a deep lying mid. These players don't score regularly
        - Doesn't have a history of consistent scoring
        - Is not nailed on to start every week
        - He will be rotated when everyone is fit

Now, if all that isn't convincing enough then let's look at his conversion rate...

So, the absolute BEST strikers in the world convert approximately 40% of their SoT.
The majority of their shots, 50-60% are taken from inside the box.

If we look at the likes of Gerrard or Lampard then these numbers fall even more.
As they only convert approximately 30-40% of their SoT into goals due to the fact that more of their shots are SoB.

Currently, Ramsey is converting 60% of his SoT & only taking 25% of his shots in the box.
As a result, I strongly feel we will see a regression in his offensive output.

Finally, this IS NOT an argument for dropping Ramsey if he's already on you team.
I can't stress that enough... If you have him hold on!
Rather, it is making a case to look elsewhere for offensive production if you don't already own him...

        tl;dr
        Ramsey's scoring will fall off
If you have him hold him
If you don't, look somewhere else

          Hi Kyle,

Thanks very much for your appreciation of my past fantasy history.

I totally agree with you that Ramsey's production will regress. It is too reasonable and needless to discuss. But what I try to point out is that he has become a big-hitter from now on, and should be the greatest value one within the big-hitter category.

About positioning, we normally won't buy any deep-lying mid-field in this game. But once you watch the soccer matches, I found both Ramsey and Yaya time their running perfectly to create a chance for teammates to pass them the ball so they can shoot in highly scorable circumstance. Their threats normally could be greater than those so-called OOP midfields namely Oscar/Hazard/Mirallas/Nolan. My conclusion is, positioning is something on paper, heat map is something about where the players are, but I believe my eyes more than these. (Just a footnote here, I think Yaya's current production is fair: His free kick conversion will be regressed, but his production from open play would be better in future)

About rotation issue, December is coming up so teams with tons of midfields talents such as MU/MC/CHE/ARS/TOT may rotate seriously. If you have Ramsey/Silva/Yaya/Hazard/Oscar/Ozil/Carzola/Walcott, they will all have rotation risk. If you fancy that the per-90min production of Ramsey can match any of the above, then Ramsey should be a better option coz his price is at least $2 cheaper except Paulinho. The only better option I fancy from these rotatable teams is Januzaj due to his price (that's why I own him).

I think I don't mind to have rotation risk in midfield, talking about having big-hitter potential in big team, but valued at comparative cheaper price. As long as midfield is not the major area to put money this season (coz assist and a midfielder's goal are under-valued in BPS system), finding "value" in midfield is the key of success when we should put more focus on big-hitting FOR and DEF.

Rooney is so much better valute

very good partenrship Rooney and RVP and both should constantly be in the points

    The baines conundrum

baines is really testing my patience, hasnt done anything since i brought him in. coupled with the fact that he is not creating chances like last season...

my def currently is baines vidic dawson burner wilson
    - burner/dawson are season keepers coz of their value and no gametime risk as of yet but they have terrible fixtures in gw12/13
    - hence will take out wilson before gw12 to have a def of baines xxx vidic (dawson burner) for gw's 12 and 13
    - so the earliest i can take baines out is gw14 when everton have mun and arsenal away. Their fixtures however from gw16 - gw21 are super enticing

    what to do?

I'm in the same boat, have rooney / sturridge / giroud and am tempted to do giroud -> benteke. Bought giroud at 8.5 and the arsenal midfield should make plenty of chances for him, but tekkers' next fixtures look tasty and has low ownership which would help climb the ranks!

    Boruc • Lewis

    Ramsey • Silva • Oscar • Morrison • Barkley
    Suarez • Aguero • Rooney
