The Digest – Gameweek 12

We take one last look at Gameweek 12 to hail the impact of Manuel Pellegrini on a certain Argentine. Palace’s recent resilience may be boosted by the arrival of Stoke’s former boss, whilst the captaincy issue in any given Gameweek seems to be whittled down to one of two South Americans:

The Player

Faced with the Premier League’s most resilient away defence last weekend, Sergio Aguero once again served up a huge Fantasy haul as City humiliated Spurs at the Etihad. While they’d put seven past Norwich in the previous home encounter, the visit of Andre Villas-Boas’ side seemed a different proposition, with Tottenham conceding a single goal on their travels prior to last Sunday.

The absence of David Silva made little difference to the hosts as Aguero tore apart the visitors’ backline, with a brace and assist in the 6-0 demolition helping him to 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points; his fifth set of double figures in 10 league starts.

Now up to 99 points for the campaign, Aguero’s prospects have been re-ignited by the arrival of both Pellegrini and Alvaro Negredo – a player his manager has described as “the perfect player for the Premier League”.

Incredibly, City have now scored more goals (26) at home than any side has managed in total and while their toils on the road may affect their title aspirations, Aguero’s form remains consistent, having produced the points in three of his four starts on the road. With 12 strikes and eight assists to his name already, the Argentine has already played a part in more goals than over the entire 2012/13 campaign under Roberto Mancini (12 goals, three assists) and with Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive, Aguero’s pivotal role in one of the most potent top-flight attacks we’ve seen for some time looks a gift-wrapped present for Fantasy managers as the season unfolds.

The Team

New boss Tony Pulis arrives at Palace in the perfect moment. Having leaked goals in each of their first 10 league matches, the Eagles’ ship has been steadied by caretaker boss Keith Millen, who has engineered back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull, with a narrow win at the KC helping them climb off the foot of the table.

In his first match in charge, Pulis rolls up to injury-hit Norwich, with playmaker Robert Snodgrass and big-money forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel both consigned to the treatment room . After that, it’s three matches in four at Selhurst Park (WHM, CAR, che, NEW) as Pulis looks to instill the resilience that helped the Potters to 30 clean sheets in the previous three seasons.

Certainly, judging by his time at the Britannia, we won’t be expecting a free-flowing brand of football – Pulis, essentially, is the anti-Pellegrini, and will be charged with no more than ensuring top-flight survival at whatever cost. If he can build on the defensive stability introduced by Millen, Pulis may yet bring Palace’s backline options into consideration – indeed, with a run of seven home games that reads (WHM, CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) he could hardly ask for a better chance to make Selhurst Park a fortress. With Julian Speroni at 4.5 in FPL and Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey all just 4.0, there are budget options aplenty should the former Britannia boss make his mark.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s stunning haul against Tottenham kept Luis Suarez in the shade for once but the Uruguayan was also in the points, with a goal and assist in the Merseyside derby ensuring his incredible tally ticked over. While we saw a number of popular frontline options rack up the returns this week, with Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney all returning double figures, the explosive consistency of Suarez and Aguero is leaving the rest standing.

Since the Liverpool forward returned from suspension in Gameweek 6, the highest haul delivered from a Suarez-Aguero partnership over the subsequent seven fixtures has been (13, 7, 16, 17, 18, 16, 15) – right now, they are almost limiting the captaincy call down to just two players in any given Gameweek. Impressively, given that Aguero was sidelined for Gameweek 6, this means that he’s outscored Suarez in four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for since the Uruguayan’s return.

Indeed, despite the fact that Rooney has registered three sets of double figures in the last four (12, 12, 4, 11), it almost seems a gamble not to have the armband on either Suarez or Aguero at any point. The United frontman has averaged an impressive seven points per game this term, yet this still pales into insignificance against the South American duo – Suarez has managed 10.4, while Aguero has delivered nine ppg.

Whilst the likes of Lukaku, with seven goals and an assist in eight appearances for Everton, and Loic Remy, with eight strikes in nine starts for Newcastle, have more than delivered during their loan spells, no one can get near Suarez and Aguero right now. With Liverpool travelling to Hull this Sunday and Aguero welcoming Swansea to the Etihad, both look poised to deliver big time yet again – those managers bold enough to roll into the weekend without one or both in their front three face an uncomfortable couple of days.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just that it's a different name than your last seasons, plus in none of the leagues like the FFS, TM's or RedCafe leagues.

Plus you have had Aguero this season just quietly.

yeah I changed them but GW history say it all. too busy to join some familiar leagues at the start of season.

Got Aguero at Gw3 when nobody has him as differential. I meant now he's 12M, Ramsey 7,3M, same as Michu almost 8M last year (you remember?) I dont feel comfortable when I get a player more expensive than other people got them

However Baker is tempting as-well, you sure he is nailed on? I thought he was just covering for an injured player.

I've started up a new league called Odds & Evens which will start scoring in gameweek 14.

    In order to stay in the league your total gameweek points will have to be odd or even, depending on which week it is in order for you to stay in. For gameweek 14 your total points must be an even number, and it alternates each week. So, for example;

    Gameweek 14: Even
    Gameweek 15: Odd
    Gameweek 16: Even
    Gameweek 17: Odd
    Etc

Also, to stop it from being just luck, the top number of players in the league, depending on how many join, will receive a pass to the next round no matter what they score. Obviously ill change this rule when the numbers are thin.

Here's the league code to enter: 51805-663631

It's an interesting idea, but it really is just down to luck. You can try and maximise points, but you can't try and get odd or even scores. It's like playing a game just flipping a coin.

Do you think I don't know that? It's something different to do.

And it's not 'just down to luck' because you can easily come top each week and stay in regardless of your score.

          The biggest issues are
          1) the random luck factor that negates skill
          2) the changing of rules as comp proceeds ie (no of top players receiving a bye)
          3) it favours people that are already ahead in the game and penalizes those who suck

These are just 3 off the top of my head... and i didnt even mention that it is simply a crap idea.

Why does it need to be skill based? It's something different for people to do. How can I have the top 20 players receiving a bye every single round? Who would win? How can it favour people already ahead when you said it is random luck factor?

I've been looking at the options for replacing Baines, beyond the obvious GJ, Terry & Mertesacker (and the Jagielka straight swap but poor fixtures)

    - McAuley & Ridgewell = new, MCI, NOR, car, HUL
    - Santon = WBA, swa, mun, SOT, cpl, STO
    - Vlaar = SUN, sot, ful, MUN, sto, CPL

I currently have BTurner, Chester, Baines, GJ & Vlaar. So I need to do something...jsut don't know what.

Terry - rotation threat throughout December for all of Chelsea
Mertesacker - rapidly turning into a non-differential given the number of transfers and looking to climb out from 300k+ position.

What are peoples thoughs on the Baines conundrum - he could be back in 10 days, so bench him and get rid of Burner instead.

Would love some advice if you can spare a minute!

    Team for next GW:

    Boruc
Coleman // Ferdinand // Dawson (Chambers // Turner)
Yaya // Ramsey // Sess // Rav (Lallana)
    Suarez // Rooney // Aguero

Thoughts on any of the below would be appreciated:

    a) Time to ditch Ferdinand? Keep telling myself he is good value...
    b) Lallana to Nasri/Navas (or even Sess to Nasri/Navas)?
    c) Ditch Yaya for alternative City coverage?
    d) Mix up my defence? Not particularly happy with any of them for the next few weeks due to a combination of poor fixtures or lack of nailed-on-ness.

I disagree. I think for the majority period of the last couple of years it has been Evans and one other. I think he will continue with this. You may get the odd time he doesn't play but as long as you have a capable player coming in then it shouldn't be a problem.

    My current defence:

    Mignolet
    Coleman Chico Murner Clyne Chester

    0.4 in bank, 1FT

I really want to do Chico to Koscielny bu chico has two home fixtures after city away (which i am expecting him to get negative points). Maybe a cheaky punt on azplicueta?

Hey guys, need some advice on which transfer option looks best.

    Current team:

    Mignolet
    McAuley / Terry / Rosenior
    Barkley / Paulinho / Hazard / Cabaye
    Remy (c) / Rooney / Suárez (vc)

    Lewis / Amalfitano / Clyne / Chico

    4.6 in bank - 1 FT

    The options i'm considering are..

    A) Remy > Aguero - leaves 0.5 bank
    B) Rooney > Aguero & Paulinho > Wally - leaves 1.1 bank
    C) Paulinho > Wally & Rosenoir > Sagna - leaves 0.8 bank
    D) Paulinho > Coutinho/Gerrard while Wally gets match fit - leaves 2.9/2.5 bank

Depends how bad you want Kun as that's a decent front line. If you need him might be wiser to ditch Lukaku for a few games and do Ozil - cheaper option than Haz. Rooney is firing atm...

I think we have got to the point where both Aguero and Suarez cannot be left out. I wouldn't add Rooney to the list mainly due to game time/fitness/rotation/suspension issues) - the other strikers are a bit streaky imo and don't weigh in with assists as much either.

The latter has no rotation issues and the former now has no CL game-time worry (he may not even start tonight), plus City need to push on in the Prem. Also City are still looking a threat v anybody home or away, the fact that they are leaking goals is irrelevant.

Given a analysis post and a post with thoughts illicits very little response.....let's keep it simple:

Best replacement for Baines for next 6 weeks:
    a) GJ
    b) Terry
    c) Mertesacker
    d) Evans
    e) Ridgwell or McAuley
    f) Santon
    g) Vlaar

I already have Vlaar and GJ, but included so post helps everyone.

Do you need to save money for another transfer (aguero, rooney,...) ?

      If not : A or B

If yes : F (you should get Collo instead of Santon)

First year playing the game so might sound like a silly question.

Can we do changes after the Sundays games for the midweek games as its 2 gameweeks?

Seriously considering selling Rooney for Aguero for this gameweek and then bringing Roo back in for gw 14. Ive Paulinho and Stoke's Wilson and Hull Rossenior on the bench so Im down to 11 outfield players. Fearful of missing out on Aguero for this gameweek. Any thoughts?

Going to bite the bullet and get Aguero tonight, before he rises again, and RVP drops. Leaves me 2.2m, which allows me to beef up the back and get Merte in for midweek at the expense of Chester or Baker.

Can then play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3, rotating Clyne and Brady depending on fixtures. Be a bit worried with no Utd players though. Almost sacrilege!
