Scout Mission – Gameweek 16

There may be a few days until the deadline but, as always, we’re already casting an eye over the upcoming set of fixtures. Here’s the scenarios and line-ups on our radar for Gameweek 16:

Silva’s game time
Back with a goal in Tuesday evening’s Champions League win over Bayern Munich, the Spaniard is already being cautiously considered by Fantasy managers. Silva has picked up a couple of injuries this term but, like many of City’s main attackers, has looked reinvigorated under Manuel Pellegrini’s guidance – with three goals and a trio of assists in just seven league appearances, he’s averaged six points per game so far. A start and a fine performance against league leaders Arsenal this upcoming Saturday could well persuade those on the lookout for a differential – Silva’s 3% ownership looks hugely tempting.

Michu’s goal threat
The Swansea man is another premium-priced option to return from injury earlier in the week. Though, handed the full 90 minutes up front in Monday’s home game against Hull, Michu failed to produce the goods, as Michael Laudrup’s side stuttered to a 1-1 draw – he’s blanked in his last six appearances now and is down to 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The Swans boss conceded his star man had struggled with injuries for a number of weeks prior to being sidelined and, if he can step up his match sharpness and impress away to Norwich this weekend, Michu may well present us with another alternative for a midfield shake-up.

Deulofeu’s impact on Mirallas’ minutes
Climbing off the bench late on in Sunday’s match at the Emirates, the youngster’s superb equaliser denied the hosts victory and ensured Everton received a well-deserved point. Having served up a goal and assist in his first start for the Toffees in Gameweek 13, Deulofeu has been tentatively used from the bench in each of the subsequent two trips to United and Arsenal, but a run of four home games in the next six looks ideal for Roberto Martinez to hand him further first-team opportunities. Kevin Mirallas’ owners would have been eyeing up this run of games as a potential source of points but will now be a little uneasy in light of Deulofeu’s recent showings – despite his classification as a forward, a price of 5.4 and two goals and an assist in his last 124 minutes suggest the Barcelona loanee may even be worth a real punt if Martinez affords him an extended run in the side.

Liverpool’s response without Gerrard
Liverpool have yet to officially confirm it but it seems all but certain their skipper will be ruled out for the festive period with a hamstring injury. Having limped off against West Ham on Saturday, Gerrard’s absence will be a major blow to Brendan Rodgers’ side – he had scored or assisted in nine of the last 10 league games in an incredible run of consistency. Luis Suarez owners will be looking for the silver lining here – the Uruguayan could well be on spot-kicks in his skipper’s absence but, with a trip to Spurs this weekend and visits to City and Chelsea in the next four, the Uruguayan’s threat may well be diminished without Gerrard pulling the strings in the centre.

Rooney and van Persie in tandem at Villa
With Suarez and Sergio Aguero proving mainstays in many a frontline, and the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Loic Remy offering mid-price options with form and favourable fixtures to follow, faith in United is low at a time when the schedule smiles kindly. Despite their side’s stuttering displays, the United front two have impressed in recent matches – Rooney has four sets of double figures in his last six, whilst the Dutchman has scored in all but one of his previous five appearances in the league. Free from suspension and injury and sitting in just 13% and 18% of FPL sides respectively, their ownership levels are relatively low enough to shake up the rankings if they can plunder the goals at Villa and boost their side’s ailing title bid.

Palace’s resilience at the Bridge
The Eagles’ trip to Chelsea this weekend is Tony Pulis’ first real test since taking the reins last month. Palace have conceded just once in the three games under their new manager but Jose Mourinho’s side have been particularly lethal in front of their own fans and have scored at least twice in every home game so far – if Palace can frustrate and limit the Blues on Saturday, faith in their budget backline options is likely to see further investment – aside from Danny Gabbidon, their defensive regulars are all owned by 2% of Fantasy managers or less.

Ozil’s Form on the Road
The Arsenal playmaker has been outstanding at the Emirates but has so far struggled to replicate that form on his travels. Ozil has produced just three assists in six away appearances – blanking against Swansea, West Brom, Palace and United so far. Certainly, his previous away appearance (an 11 point haul at Cardiff) bodes well but, with the Gunners facing a City side that have conceded twice at home all season, he faces a tough task to produce.

Brady’s Role at Home to Stoke
The Tigers playmaker is on borrowed time now after warming the bench for the full 90 minutes of Monday’s draw at Swansea. Three sets of double figures in the first six highlighted Brady’s top-flight capabilities but, since picking up a hernia problem, he’s never been quite the same and, looking short of confidence, was taken out the firing line at the Liberty as Steve Bruce opted for Maynor Figueroa on the left of a 3-5-2 instead. At present, Brady still sits in over 8% of Fantasy teams but if his manager doesn’t turn to his talents against the Potters, the exodus will surely pick up pace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Managers with both Rooney and Lukaku - who you captaining and why?

Rooney - expecting a United response, RVP back should help the overall United attack, good record against Villa, away support is immense.

Lukaku - @ home, good stats, beast, good team and player form, Fulham one of the worst defences

this is the strongest argument imo. Rooney is a gamechanger while Lukaku is more of a finisher.

If Everton has an off day, Lukaku will too. If United has an off day, you'd bet on house on Rooney trying his hardest to get a goal or set one up.

        Tough call.

I think I might kop out of the choice and go Hazard instead. Would favour Lukaku though I think given Everton's form and United's lack thereof.

United is such an unknown quantity at the moment. At the back they are leaky as anything, but against Everton Rooney and co were very unlucky not to score.

If things click at the weekend, Villa will be in for a hard time.

Agree. That's what worries me. If Everton has a bad day at the office, Lukaku will be isolated and chances are he will blank.

Rooney can deliver out of nothing. A good corner kick, a good free kick delivery etc. Leaning toward Rooney. Have Hazard and he's not a bad shout, but been burned by placing too much trust in an attacker vs Palace this season (RVP and Suarez already. Got returns but nothing explosive)

Fair to say Arsenal needs his pace up front at times, but with Ramsey, one of Arteta/Flamini, Ozil and Giroud all nailed on for starts most weeks, that leaves 2 spots between Cazorla, Walcott, Rosicky, the other one of Arteta/Flamini and Podolski when he's back.

Just planning through my transfers. If I get MOlsson over Brown I'll have just enough for Ozil at his current price.

I can only hope your next 2 encourage a few sales to drop his price as I think I prefer Brown to MOlsson, as he covers Clyne's tougher fixtures better.

The transfers rate seems to have a lot more influence from fixtures this season, look at Everton players this week for example. If Ozil does anything over the next 2 and stays ~ top 4 midfielders I don't think he'll drop!

Then again some people are selling after 30 odd points in 3 games.

Must say reading these posts that this gw is shaping up to maybe have a much wider band of scores -- 4-6 legitimate captains who are in many people's squads, 3-4 budget def/mids for one or two spots. Plenty of big decisions whereas fixtures, injuries, suspensions meant that perhaps our lineups and (c) selected themselves the last few weeks.

That being said, it still drove me nuts to read posts dismissing Suarez goals as no big deal since all of us cool kids had him. If you can't be psyched when your captain scores, this season has become cynical far too early.

I think the level of risk is lower this week. I can't see Aguero or Suarez smashing a 15 point plus GW as they threaten to most weeks.

Lukaku scares me, and Rooney should worry those who don't own him.

But i think the variance between the captain favourites could be relatively low.

Interesting way to look at it, except for the Rooney part as I don't own him!

With the risk level lower perhaps the prospects of a comparative captain failure increase, or are you saying that the high scorer will likely not be that high? Good point.

By the way, liked the hot topic post earlier this week -- read it too late to comment but nice work. I posted something in the DZ last night that is the beginning of some thoughts on regression and differentials, but your post was vewry helpful.

            Cheers mate,

I see this as a good time to take a bit of a 'risk' by captaining a lesser owned player. Normally Suarez or Aguero will be an obvious choice and its a case of going with the percentages but this week i think you can afford to back a Rooney, a Hazard or a Lukaku with their fixtures looking more favourable.

If you get it right, you stand to gain big (because not so many people are likely to match your captain score) and if your © fails, the big boys are less likely to wallop you for 30 points.

Lukaku, Rooney and Hazard captainers will be the ones standing to make a good move in the table, but there will be fewer of them than normal.

big moves for the few who get it right, small moves for many if you get it wrong. You might drop a lot of places but they won't be miles away.

the main reason for Bannan is that he is 4.4m and thats my budget to make the other two fit.
He takes set pieces, will be the playmaker and I'm sure Pulis is getting those boys working on set pieces. His PPG isn't bad considering his price.

The main attraction was to have Silva and Walcott over Özil and Lallana.

Is the thinking that Silva is clearly an upgrade over Lallana? TSB%, class/pedigree, and fixtures probably agree with that one -- am assuming that Ozil to Walcott is a price move since it's probably sideways as far as FPL production.

            exactly my thoughts.

I think Özil is a better player head to head vs Walcott, but the margin isn't huge and his ownership is high.

I like the look of Silva vs Lallana though. That one is significantly stacked in Silva's favour imo.

Not saying Wenger doesn't need Walcott back or that he doesn't have an important role now, but he's a bigger rotation risk than last season. That's why i'm put off him. Part of his appeal last year was playing in every game when fit.

look if you cant punt on double defenders from an inform team with a great schedule, then we might as well all go home now

I hope the English batsmen can handle the heat. First 4 days of the test are 38, 38, 38 and 39ºC. Toasty.
