The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

City’s Bosnian striker makes the most of his cameo role by netting City’s winner against a plucky Palace, while Hull’s midfield quarterback hits double figures on a day that saw Fantasy managers plunged into panic by the absence of captaincy candidate, Wayne Rooney.

The Game Changer

Man City’s team sheet was the focus of our morning anxiety and, while Rooney’s omission eventually overshadowed Manuel Pellegrini’s reshuffles, the City lineup was to prove pivotal in our Saturday scoring. With the likes of Yaya Toure and Alvaro Negredo absent, it was left to Edin Dzeko to make the difference as a brave Palace rearguard was eventually breached by the Bosnian’s decisive strike.

Subject of our “Differentials” article and my own pre-amble this morning, Dzeko’s intervention will have provided rewards for a minority of Fantasy managers who took a risk on the City striker.

As my own ramblings mentioned, Dzeko looks to be a one-week proposition – unlikely to feature in Wednesday’s starting lineup, he was a trade who had to produce today to justify the gamble. With maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus likely to follow, a nine point return, potentially doubled with the captaincy, looks a notable contribution in a Gameweek which seems destined for modest returns.

Sadly for Dzeko and his owners, his winner, however precious, is unlikely to strengthen his case for consistent starts in Pellegrini’s plans. He’s likely be shown a quick exit and thanked for his efforts on a day which saw the big names blank.

The Underused

Heralded as a superb summer signing, Tom Huddlestone has been integral to Hull City’s impressive start to their Premier League campaign. Stationed in a deep-lying midfield role, turning defence into attack with sublime simplicity, the £5 million signing from Spurs seemed unlikely to tempt Fantasy interest. Today’s impressive 14-point haul may well change that – albeit briefly.

Huddlestone’s superb dead-ball delivery has been a feature of the Tigers’ season but, today, his two assists were accompanied by a first goal of the campaign in a 6-0 drubbing of René Meulensteen’s Fulham.

That was his first Premier League goal since 2011 – underlining the fact that Huddlestone’s appeal perhaps remains limited. At just 4.8 in the FPL, however, the playmaker is an assured starter who will likely contribute further assists.

Surely a contender for Hull’s player of the year, Huddlestone is exactly the kind of midfielder that Fantasy games and their scoring systems should be trying to reach. Huddlestone may claim maximum FPL bonus points from today’s convincing win but that will be only the second time he’s been recognised by the BPS. Arguably, as one of the season’s top performers so far, we should have had reason to take notice way before today’s haul. Huddlestone is one of several midfielders “underused” and undervalued in Fantasy terms.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s absence from the United team sheet with further groin gripes was undoubtedly the biggest blow on a day which saw rotation bite. United stuttered without his influence but David Moyes and United have already confirmed that he is likely to make his return against Spurs on Wednesday. With FPL vice captains kicking in, the onus will now be back on Luis Suarez to produce at Chelsea – the impact of Rooney’s injury could well be minor, then.

Even so, with Yaya Toure omitted by Pellegrini, we saw two key figures in the established “template” go AWOL, just a few days after Aaron Ramsey’s injury. Such setbacks could yet cause a shake-up in the rankings and mini-leagues, although few Fantasy managers seem likely to have benefited significantly from today’s events.

Tomorrow’s encounter at the Bridge will be more important that ever. Should Suarez blank again and Theo Walcott, backed by some with armband, produce at Newcastle, we may yet see Gameweek 19 have a significant impact.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

basically whilst both have bee fit the only home games Kolarov has started have been Hull (after that Clichy horror show v Cardiff), (Everton, he got that knock and Clichy came on, although even then Clichy wasn't fully fit) and Liverpool, (due to rotation).

Basically, Clichy starts at home, Kolarov starts away

What use is Kolarov when he won't play those tasty home fixtures

Have you seen Clichy defend this season? Off the top of my head he's been woeful against Chelsea, Cardiff and Fulham. All away from home incidentally.

"What use is Kolarov" should be a banned term 😉

I'm not sure that's definitely right, Clichy was injured GWs 4-6 and 14-15 which skews things significantly towards the Kolarov starting away theory. I think the Sunderland away game which Kolarov started came around a Champions League game which Clichy started so again its simple rotation.

Rotating against Liverpool makes no sense, today was the game for rotation. Clichy made yet more mistakes against Fulham, I wonder if he has dropped in the pecking order.

In general Clichy starts when teams are gonna sit back and look to counter at speed, so especially at home. Kolarov preferred against teams that will look to play a possession game, which is often away

              it's not even that anymore

since GW10, if City have been away Kolarov has started, if at home Clichy. The only exception is Fulham when both played due to Zaba's injury

Basically, Kolarov plays away, Clichy plays at home

It's odd IMO, Clichy is the better defender of the 2, Kolarov the better attacker, you'd think the opposite should be true

I did my wildcard this week, probably not the best time due to rotation and injury. Ended up with 13 points from 6 players; Januzaj, Negrado, Silva all failed and my captain Rooney didn't even travel.

My VC is Walcott, the guy who tempted me to WC in the first place for my new 'template midfield' three of Hazard, Walcott and Silva. Now Wally needs to repay me big time....but expecting nada the way this GW is unfolding ;(

I know that those below me in my ML will be having orgasms at the thought of taking a big chunk out of my 80+ lead.

Looking forward to GW 20 and beyond can anyone give me hope that Januzaj, Negrado and Wayne can make amends? Should I bench Silva and save a FT or spend the .2 that he's made me to bring in a replacement and if so who?

    GW20 midfield currently:

    Hazard SOU (A) - Barkley STK (A) - Januzaj TOT (H) - Walcott CAR (H)

Many thanks in advance for your advice and your understanding of the shame and anger I'm feeling at such stupidity

    A) Mertesaker

Hi folks, looking at my team for next gw...I a contemplating from saving FT to taking hits lol..have 0m ITB

    Mannone
    Distin merte Olson (Chester burner)
    Hazard* Wally januzaj* Nasri (silva)
    Suarez Lukaku Rooney*

    * = players who may not start
My starting 11 is fine assuming they start but if they don't I am fhked as my bench is useless for this gw so:
A: take silva out for basically anybody...will keep Nasri for icy coverage till gw23
    B: burner + silva >> Baines + sterling (-4)
    C: januzaj >> sterling
D: save it and hope my 11 start

Who is going a cheap defence in the January WC?
Doesn't really seem to matter how good a team is, they just seem to concede. There is some lovely rotation, Cardiff, Norwich, Palace, a bit of Hull, Fulham, Sunderland of course.

My defence may make you feel nauseous but they seem to rack up the points and in the Jan WC my extra budget defence may pull it off. 1 priced 5.5, the rest at under 4.1.

    Hi and Good Morning people!
I got a bit of a dilemma, I was planning to get Rooney this week and this "injury" occurred. Then Silva gets his 5th YC I just don't know what to prioritize first.

    My team for next GW
    Howard-Marshall
    Coleman-Sagna-**Clyne-Ward-Chester
    Hazard-*Silva-Walcott-Cabaye-**R.Morrison
    Suarez-Lukaku-**Berbatov

    *= Susp
    **= Doubtful

    Should I do:
    a) Howard/Berba & Lukaku> Mannone/Hooper & Rooney (-4)
    b) Ravel > 5.0- 5.5 mid
    c) Clyne > 4.0 -5.0 def

    Thanks in advance! 🙂
