Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Zaha

It’s a rare occasion for any player to appear under our Scouting radar twice in a single season. With a loan move from United to Cardiff last week, Wilfried Zaha becomes a Moving Target just three months after his initial Scout Report:

His arrival at Cardiff – alongside Fabio – follows a trend of young, attack-minded players joining the Bluebirds ranks as Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer revamps his Premier League strugglers. The move comes at a good time for the talented young winger, with Adnan Januzaj stealing the limelight as United’s latest hot prospect and the arrival of Juan Mata only serving to further reduce his chances of game time. Speaking on his arrival, Solskjaer identified the new signing as someone who will make the difference in the attacking third:

“He has pace, power, technical ability and goes past people. He will give us that extra change of tempo in the final third, where we really need it… He will bring that little final bit to find pockets of space and produce a bit of magic.”

The History

The Ivory Coast-born Zaha joined Palace’s youth set-up at just nine years of age before making his debut for the club eight years later. His first campaign as a regular produced a single goal and five assists from 41 appearances, before Zaha went on to deliver six goals and seven assists in 2011/12.

The following season, Zaha became Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing at United when he sealed a £15m deal to bring the Crystal Palace talent to Old Trafford back in January of 2013. The youngster remained at Selhurst Park for the remainder of the season, playing a key role in their successful promotion campaign. Zaha went on to finish the season strongly, registering six goals and eight assists in 43 league games and signed off in style by scoring a couple of goals and creating one in the Championship play-offs as he fired Palace back into the top flight.

The Prospects

According to Moyes, the champions received several offers for Zaha and identified the Bluebirds as the right club for the winger to gain top-flight experience. After the loan deal was confirmed, the United boss explained the reasoning behind his decision to allow Zaha to move to Wales temporarily:

“I said right at the start of the season that if I could get Wilf the games, I’d keep him, but if I couldn’t then I’d get him some games on loan… in the end we felt Cardiff was the right choice for him. Hopefully he will go and get those games, show what he can do in the Premier League and be ready to come back to us at the end of the season”

Considering that he had previously managed just 30 minutes under Moyes, it’s fair to say Zaha’s Fantasy prospects can only be improved by his Bluebirds move. Comfortable on both flanks, and with the ability to play through the middle – either as a striker or in a supporting role – the youngster’s versatility will provide Solskjaer with plenty of options, though we expect him to line up on the left of a 4-2-3-1, as he did in this weekend’s victory over Norwich.

The fleet-footed winger was credited by his new manager as having “changed the game” on Saturday’s debut, a performance in which he assisted Craig Bellamy for the equalising goal after replacing Peter Whittingham. Indeed, Whittingham looks the likeliest to be affected by Zaha’s arrival – having started every league game thus far, he was somewhat ruthlessly withdrawn by Solskjaer just 38 minutes into the Canaries encounter. Given Zaha’s immediate impact, Whittingham’s 7% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners have valid reasons for concern as Solskjaer injects more pace into his side on the flanks.

With current ownership sitting at less than 2%, and a drop in price from 6.5 to 5.4 in FPL, Zaha (priced at 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team) may well be worth our consideration as a budget midfield prospect if his display against the Canaries is anything to go by. Ironically, it comes at a time when Januzaj’s game time has diminished as a result of Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford, while the likes of the similarly-priced Ross Barkley has struggled for returns, with just one goal in his last 15 appearances.

The short-term fixtures are also in Zaha’s favour. Games against Swansea, Villa, Hull and Fulham in their next five could allow early adopters the chance to prosper in the coming weeks, whilst those already holding Jason Puncheon may even consider Zaha as a viable midfield partner – Cardiff and Palace offer a home/away rotation for 11 of the remaining 14 Gameweeks.

@ Evs. As one of the more successful on the site ., would value your thoughts ? and others of course.

Many on here seem so risk (hit) averse so wondering how the more successful managers on here view the situation.
My take , always try and avoid but if necessary don't think twice ie to get in form player or a Cpt over next two games (or longer) or if side is decimated.

Prior to current gameweek , manager in 4th had not taken a single hit the whole season. Faced with a decimated team he 'held strong' still no hit - dropped 4th to 23rd (so far)
    Players currently in 1st and 2nd - 11 and 9 hits .

Hard to point finger at guy in 23 rd overall ( 123 k) but trying to glean info for my onslaught next season !

Im happy to take hits very often, the aim is to make up the points that gw but it can also gain/save money & set u up for future gws.

Just about really calculating the risk before

While not being one of the more successful players, I think it's safe to say that it's not the number of transfers you do that matters, but which transfers you do.
Also, I think getting the captaincy right is paramount in order to get to, and stay at, the top.

Tx Berba.. Think same , if you got a gut on a Cpt choice hits can pay big, Just though this guy who was in 4th last week may disappear from the scene , He hasn't taken 1 hit and even when team decimated he holding strong - seems ridiculous.

With Man City sitting second in the table with 68 goals this season and a great run of fixtures after their big match later (nor, SUN, STO, N/A, AVL, hul) it would be crazy to go without a City player. But who to pick with such premium players who are all capable of scoring big points. Here is my analyses:

    Defenders -

    Kompany: price 6.3, Form 4, goals 3, assists 0
    + Good Form
    Scoring goals
    Main defender (no rotation risk)
    - High price range
City don't keep many clean sheets

    Kolarov: price 5.5, Form 3.2, goals 1, assists 5
    + Very attacking
    Gets assists regularly
    Cheaper than other defenders
    - Rotation risk
    Falling in price

    Midfield -

    Yaya: Price 10.2, Form 5.5, Goals 12, Assists 4
    + On set pieces
Highest points scorer for midfield this year
Many have him since the start
    - I still think he's too defensive
    Costs too much
4 frees and 3 penalties this year
Could be an anti yaya person (like me)

    Silva: Price 9.3, Form 3.5, Goals 4, assists 8
    + Very consistent
    Attacking role
    Cheaper/different than Yaya
    - lacks scoring big points hauls
    Hasn't done much recently
Shares points by getting the assist

    Forwards -

    Negredo: Price 9.7, Form 1.8, Goals 9, assists 4
    +City's main striker after Aguero
    Played more than Dzeko
    Good option to replace aguero/Adebayor
    -Poor form
    Could be rotation risk

    Dzeko: Price 7, Form 7.2, Goals 7, Assists 4
+Cheap so you can upgrade elsewhere
    In great form
Ahead of Jovetic in the pecking order
    -Rotation risk

    Risk- Zabaleta/Navas/Jovetic

So which and how many City players are you going with knowing there is a blank around the corner but with great fixtures either side of it? I will probably go with Silva and Dzeko if I can fit them in some way

big issue for me is their hectic schedule.

It's going to be very difficult to pick the players who'll actually get those games - surely the tough cup ties will now take priority with such kind PL fixtures.

I have Silva. Probably sticking with him only.

Would be worried about those two as they're both rotation risks but I think two is enough with all the blanks. Your midfield could be strong even without a man city player

    Thinking about doing:
    Giroud+Mert->RVP+Azpi (-4)
    Will give me this team:
    Mannone (Marshall)
    Kolarov Coleman Azpi (Turner,Molsson)
Mata AJ Hazard (vc) Lallana (Puncheon)
    Suarez RVP(c) Sturridge

Barring any injury tonight to Azpi or an eye catching display of a Mcity player is it a good plan?

that's silly, just roll a shot under the bus, cech will have no idea where it's going and when it's coming, unless he lies down in which case he can't move quickly.

This is my current front 7:

    Hazard Lallana Eriksen Mata (Noone)
    Suarez Sturridge Adebayor

Feel I need some City cover. Have £2.7M in the bank so could do Eriksen > Silva or shall I just straight swap Adebayor > Negredo/Dzeko?

I have a similar dilemna, ish. Have Silva, eriksen, adebayor, thinking of a chelsea player for game against newcastle, given how bad they were against Sunderland.

Also thinking of ade to dzeko, silva to yaya. It's impossible to guess it at this stage. There seems to be about 7 midf options. I think either option would be good..or bad.

Who is the preferred 3rd striker for people atm?

I can't look past Rodriguez atm. Great price, 6th highest forward on points and I love their fixtures to the end of the season too. Currently have Ade, but he doesn't convince me. Plus Spurs' fixtures aren't great on the run-in

it will also waste two transfers and any injuries or suspensions will cost you hits.

      Not a clever move IMO.

Id rather to a 4pt hit to with RVP in for the second spot and keep him
