Moving Target

Moving Target – Andre Wisdom

West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

      Cahill - safest

      Terry - most points potential

      Ivan - most explosive

Azpi - consistent, cheap, maybe rotated

luis - new, cheap, maybe rotated with Azpi if Ivan keeps his spot again.

Probably true, but at least Cahill is younger and probably fitter than Terry..

Then again it's Mourinho so logic need not apply.

Yep but last year was different circumstances..

Last year was Mourinho's first year back, so understandably he'd use Terry a lot as a general from the "old guard", one player who wasn't so lucky was Cole, who was deemed less important due to his age and the emergence of Azpili at left back..

This year Mourinho has to look towards the future a bit more as he now has over a season under his belt there and he won nothing last year, so I see older players starting to lose prominence on the field but being kept around for more than just their playing capabilities

Terry is far from past it, and still warrants a starting berth, but with Luis coming into the side, that pushes Azpi over to RB where Ivan has since found refuge, if Azpi (one of Jose's favourite players) ousts Ivan for that spot, or is even rotated a small bit, then Ivan could push Terry/Cahill out of CB for a handful of games.

Both Terry and Cahill should start most games at CB but I wouldn't be surprised if Terry's game time diminished a small bit from last year's numbers.

      Coming from a Chelsea fan

      Luis-Most nailed at LB
Cahill and Terry also nailed at CB because of their partnership
Azpi most likely to be RB
Ivan will be on the bench most of the time
Zouma is one for the future

I'm so tempted by 3-5-2 but 3-4-3 is a proven formation that works time after time

Can't help thinking that everyone who gambles on 3-5-2 will be trying to work out how to get back to 3-4-3 once a few strikers hit form

There are going to be some good strikers this season and there is a good chance that a few will be bargains, you need to be set up to jump on board

Had considered exactly that, but Sidwell has 3 goals in 6 games vs Villa. Also more alternatives - if Bojan drops out there aren't many forward options at 5.5.

Looking at Chelsea's defensive record, United's fixtures and Debuchy all round, it just seems that 5.5 and 6.0 defenders offer far more promise than midfielders at the same price...

Completely agree with you. My strategy this season as well.
In fact, currently my team relies on rotation between Siggy and Pieters (respectively 3-4-3 vs 4-3-3).

Downgrade Debuchy. You don't need to spend all your cash just because it is there - your defence can be trimmed significantly and if necessary just save the rest.

    hey guys
    1) hazard, giroud, pelle
    2) fabregas/mata, sturridge, weimann
I already have rooney, so im leaning towards fabregas if option 2, but i'm currently going with 1. Thoughts?

    RMT please.

    Team 2 (A)

    Krul / Mannone

    Debuchy / Ward / Shaw / Lovren / Vlaar

    Sanchez / Fabregas / Sigurdsson / Eriksen / Albrighton

    Remy / Dzeko / Rooney

(I want to transfer Remy £7.5m. I don't have any other money so who else is worth looking at for £7.5m? Don't fance Pelle)

    Team 2 (A)

    Krul / Mannone

    Debuchy / Ward / Shaw / Lovren / Vlaar

    RAMSEY / Fabregas / Sigurdsson / Eriksen / Albrighton

    Remy / Dzeko / Rooney

(Sanchez to Ramsey (would prefer to keep Sanchez though) frees up £1.5m + transfer Remy gives me £9m. Who's worth looking at? Bony?)

    Any ideas? Thank you

      So basically
      A) Ramsey + Bony/Giroud
      or
      B) Sanchez + Remy

I would have to say A.

Thought about Giroud but already have Sanchez/Ramsey & Debuchy. No need for 3 Arsenal.

        So yeah it's really either:

        Sanchez + £7.5m forward
        or
        Ramsey + Bony

If i go Ramsey & Giroud would need to change Debuchy for a £5.5m Defender. Any ideas?

You could have both Sanchez AND Bony if you just trimmed a bit from your defence. Downgrade Debuchy to Wisdom and you instantly have 1.5m more to play with, plus he rotates well with Vlaar.
Then Lovren ➡ Luis and you can have Sanchez & Bony.

      You're welcome.

There's no point having a 5.5m defender sitting on the bench every week, Wisdom and Vlaar can do that.

Word with the West Brom fans and media is that Gamboa will play on the wing, ahead of Wisdom on the pitch. Both give WC defensive stability.

    Thoughts?

Anyone think Rémy could end up at Everton?

£9mil seems like a Martinez-esque deal, with Everton being able to offer him European football. Perhaps Lukaku coming back on loan with an option to buy? However I see Lukaku going to Wolfsburg/Schalke

I'm beginning to worry. Jovetic has great form, Aguero isn't in training for awhile still. Dzeko I still think isn't nailed on, but could Jovetic be City's new revelation? That and if I remove Aguero I'll never be able to afford him again.

Keep Aguero then, or at least preserve some funds.

Looking the smart option atm. I just wish pre-season gave us more insight but Arsenal vs City may do I guess.

It is surprisingly easy this year to build a good team that is still under-budget, worth taking advantage of. I have 2.5m ITB affording me a switch to almost any player in the game.

I know but I don't expect him to be selected over either Jovetic or Aguero. Hmm.

    a) any fears that diego costa could be benched or early substituted for legend Drogba?

    c) Do you think that Giroud would miss the first match as the press claims that he is to resume training on august 11th?

    c) Do you think man city's opening fixtures are hard enough and should avoid dzeko from the off?

    thanks

It's a great subject...we only ever hear the version sold to the British public at the time to justify Britain going to war with Germany.....a bit odd when it was a Serb shooting an Austrian...
