Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1

We’re taking a new approach with this season’s Captaincy article. From now on, we’ll split our pre-deadline regular into three parts, taking in the weekly Captain Poll, the player statistics and the Rate My Team projections.

The first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

With a massive 59% of the votes cast so far, Wayne Rooney is the runaway leader ahead of United’s home encounter with Swansea. Over the course of the summer, Rooney finished top scorer for Louis van Gaal’s side with four strikes to his name and with Robin van Persie still sidelined due to a lack of match fitness, the England international has now risen to 44% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Juan Mata’s role in “the hole” in United’s new 3-4-1-2 formation has persuaded over 3% of voters to hand the Spaniard the armband as the Red Devils prepare to entertain a Swans side that managed just two clean sheets in 14 matches under Garry Monk in 2013/14. Mata notched twice over the summer and impressed in the final few months of the season, with six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in 15 appearances.

Sitting in second spot – albeit some way behind Rooney – is Chelsea’s Diego Costa. The Brazilian has made an immediate impact since arriving from Atletico Madrid and his four goals and a trio of assists over the summer have persuaded over 12% to select him in this week’s Poll ahead of Monday’s trip to Burnley. Seen as the ideal frontman for Jose Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1, Costa is rapidly rising in ownership and now resides in 33% of FPL sides as he looks to replicate the form that delivered 27 goals in La Liga last time round. Eden Hazard’s late return to pre-season training has earned him just 1% of the votes cast, with Cesc Fabregas picking up 2% after being occasionally utilised in “the hole” behind Costa in recent matches.

You’ve placed Daniel Sturridge in third position as Liverpool prepare for life without Luis Suarez. Having recovered from a hamstring problem, the Reds frontman struck his first goal of the pre-season in Sunday’s 4-0 rout of Dortmund and with the Saints losing two of last term’s first-choice back-four in the summer sales, Fantasy faith in Sturridge is building – almost 7% are willing to hand him the armband.

Arsenal’s impressive win over City in Sunday’s Community Shield has brought Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud into the reckoning – the pair have been selected by a combined 5%+ of voters, whilst Bojan Krkic’s form over the summer has caught the eye. The Stoke forward has netted three times since joining the Potters and he’s subsequently earned 1.4% of the votes cast, the same as Yaya Toure.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Herrera and Johnson are interesting options, not seen many of those.

maybe swap gerrard for hazard and downgrade johnson to marney?

doubling up on chelsea def is a nice ballsy strategy. hope luis starts!

    A) Debuchy + Duff

I currently have Cahill, Chester + N Taylor in my defence

I had no idea about that either.
Just looked it up and he got 8 last season which is a lot. However, Kompany managed to get 6 last season. Similarly Lovren got 7 so hopefully with Debuchy now playing in a much better side his card count may be reduced? There's wishful thinking anyway

u guys know something i dont?
he's fielded out wide, first season in epl arguably the most physical of european leagues, and he's been bumping from barcelona to roma to ac milan back to barcelona then to ajax.... without any real impact
i dare you to convince me why he's so popular...other than his pricetag

      The arguments for him are:
      Cheap
      Good fixtures
      Scoring well in preseason

This all overlooks the fact that he's shit and every season there are popular cheap strikers on here that have scored well in friendlies and have good fixtures but turn out to completely flop when the season starts.

Thx for the feedback mate, why Gilks over Elliot? Not that it's a make or break thing given they both won't play bar injury.

Yeah Albrighton is injured but think he's expected back GW2 and of the 4.5 mids I think he has the most potential.

Just think he is a challenge to Heaton... All I have to go on is FIFA stats! LOL

I did some analysis of gaps between the 4M keepers and the number 1 and he looked closest. That's all.

Yes I do re: Court. The potential for rotation would worry me with him, but I think he is safer than Luis/Azpi etc.

team is pretty much set, all that's left is

    1) decide on naughton or chambers or another 4.5m defender (already have pva and naylor)
    2) decide on dzeko vs jovetic
    3) decide on XI, bench, and bench order
    4) freak out and reconsider the entire team and all my choices up to this point
    5) leave some silly decision until the last minute and risk not getting the change in on time

I mean that we don't know why Arsene paid 16M for him, he obviously won't play every game but with players like Gibbs/Monreal being a bit blah... Coupled with Debuchy inevitably missing a few matches with cards etc. Plus! Him being touted for a CDM role... He might actually work out a decent buy over the season.

Marney, but his a blah pick.

There are other chaps who will get 38 games... Like Jones @ Burnley.

Check out Faurlin at QPR... He tempted me, but wasn't 100% sure on starts. Looks like a decent enough player though?

Naughton imo, I think Walker's injury could keep him out at least 4 more GWs

Mannone is a danger, swap him for Foster?

No problems at the back, provided Brucey starts.

Wanyama has zero goal threat. Maybe take a punt on someone like Jones at burnley?

      Good otherwise.

Apart from Hendo (I have siggy), our attack is the same.

      My defence is:

      Krul | Elliot

      Terry | Chambers | Chester | Coloccini | Gamboa

      Thoughts?

He finished last season in great form. WIth their schedule, he wouldn't be the worst differential.

    GK: Bego, Elliot
DEF: Terry, PVA , Kelly, Duff, Caulker
MID: Ramsey ,Sterling, Mata, Marney, Siggy
    ATT: Rooney, Dzeko, Costa

1)Chester to Naughton? How long do we think Walker will be out for?

    2) Terry over Cahill?

Don't see Chester or Naughton in your team.

Flip a coin... Terry has goals preseason, Cahill probably most secure over entire season. I keep swapping.

For any of you TRUE punters out there.

Sone Aluko is only 5m and seems like he'll be in Hull's lineup for the foreseeable future. He'll be playing OOP up front too.

I saw this earlier today (yesterday?) in another post... He'd be a decent differential, but as far as 5th mids go, Hull will probably make another signing (especially if they want to play the UEFA cup to win)

    Please RMT

    Begovic Gilks

    Clyne PVA Chester Ferdinand Bartley

    Hazard Mata Ramsay Lamela Henderson

    Rooney Costa Bojan

Went with Bartley as a little punt ,Monk likes him and he rotates better then Hutton and is more nailed on then Hutton imo.

Henderson or Bojan this week ? Thinking Henderson
