Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Cesc Fabregas grabs a pair of assists as Chelsea overcome Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor. Diego Costa nets on his league debut, while Branislav Ivanovic and Andre Schurrle are also amongst the goals as the Blues get off to an impressive start.

Chelsea New Boys Dazzle in Burnley Destruction
Positioned in the Blues double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas showed that, despite a deep-lying role, he looks poised to play a major part in our Fantasy seasons. The Spaniard pulled the strings for Jose Mourinho’s side in an outstanding first-half display that harvested a pair of assists and the maximum bonus points as he overshadowed the pricier Eden Hazard in the Chelsea midfield.

Up front, Diego Costa continued the momentum that saw him score four times over the summer friendlies. Drafted in by 37% of FPL managers prior to the weekend, the former Atletico Madrid man was second only to Wayne Rooney in last week’s Captain Poll and his predatory instincts will surely persuade more to invest as Mourinho’s men welcome Leicester, Swansea and Villa to the Bridge in the next five.

Schurrle Stakes a Claim
The German’s excellent strike also brings him onto radars as a potential mid-price option. Coming in at just 7.5, Schurrle scored eight times in just over 1400 minutes last season, with an average of 176.4 minutes per goal quicker than any Chelsea player – currently sitting in just 6% of FPL sides, he looks a real prospect if he can retain the role on the right of the attacking midfield three.

Luis and Cech Warm the Blues Bench
Mourinho started last season’s back-four for the Burnley clash as new signing Filipe Luis was named amongst the substitutes, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic fielded as full-backs. Clearly, though, the new boy won’t be expected to sit on the bench every week and it may not be for a number of matches before we get a clear idea of Mourinho’s intentions – there seems little conclusions can be made on last night’s team sheet. Thibaut Courtois got the nod ahead of Petr Cech for the number one jersey, though before the match, the Blues boss added further uncertainty to the situation by stating:

“Thibaut is my number one tonight against Burnley. I don’t make decisions for the season; I make decisions for a match.”

Arfield’s Budget Appeal
The Clarets man was one of only three budget midfielders to get amongst the goals this week, along with Ki Sung-Yeung and Lee Cattermole. Having netted eight times in last year’s Championship, Arfield carries the main scoring threat in the centre of the park in Sean Dyche’s side and, after proving his capabilities against a side that chalked up 18 clean sheets last season, could come into contention as a cheap fifth midfield option.

It's like Haz--->Fab, except you get more money in the bank + you get a player who is a lot more likely to score a goal than Fab(or any Chelsea player) + more points 😀

His stats are incredible. I know it's a tiny sample size, but they were just as good last season....except he didn't get the game time and was always a sub.....but now after the WC.......

He did wonders for me in FOX WC fantasy, so schurrle I've got to repay the favour? 😆

Pretty happy with 64 points for the first week. Save my transfer this week?

    Krul

    Clyne, Chester, Debuchy

    Hazard, Fabregas, Mata, Eriksen

    Roony, Bojan, Costa (C)

    Bench: Foster, Marney, Duff, PVA

If RVP plays 15+ mins this weekend, then I'll do Fabregas/Hazard & Costa to Tadic/Cabella/Ramsey & RVP (C) AFTER GW 2.

    Good plan?

Cheers. Just really hoping RVP sticks to the script and gets a little run out this weekend. As a United fan though, I'd much rather see him play a full game ASAP as we need him!

RVP (C) for 3 weeks would be a very tasty differential to people getting in Aguero.

It won't be too big a change. Cabella has TASTY fixtures from GW 3 onwards (so I just decided it'll be him I'll get), 2 FTs spent on bringing in 2 quality attackers against "nice" teams.

But of course, RVP needs to play a bit this weekend otherwise it's too risky - he needs to be nailed on first.

            Will respond below 😉

I just re-read it, and you're right, not major restructuring at all! Without checking, I'm guessing RVP and Kun cost about the same? Because I'd definitely prefer the latter then. Opinion though

RVP is 0.5 more than Kun.

Problem I have with Kun is from GW 3 he has: Stoke, Arsenal Chelsea

                RVP has: Burnley, QPR, Leicester

I just can't see Kun outscoring RVP in that run, and I'd feel a lot safer being able to captain RVP against those teams.

You're starting to convince me of the guy :/

Your reasoning is very sound. And I can see RVP scoring a few in those fixtures, easy. My only problem was their showing on the weekend.

Maybe if they look better in their next game. I'll be keeping an eye too now!

Don't tell anyone else though, this is our differential secret!

I can't wait to captain him 3 times in a row whilst people have to captain cheaper players because they chose Aguero.

I you had to choose, would you get SCHURRLE or TADIC or CABELLA (who allows Sturridge -> Aguero)?

Or would you get Hendo, which allows you to do Sturridge/Rooney -> Aguero next week?

Or rather worry about next week, next week?

Current front line is Rooney - Studge - Costa.

Don't touch Schurrle imo. I think Cabella is the perfect buy given his fixtures and the fact he scored 14 league goals last season in France - I'd also try and double him up with Tadic at a later date.

No problem. Cabella played really well for a debut against City. He already looks so incredibly slick on the ball and does step overs and roll overs so nicely to draw fouls. I think he & Tadic will explode and be main stream picks in the future, so I'll be buying them ASAP (after I stick RVP in the side ofc 😉 )

How does everyone approach transfers? For the past year I have pretty resolutely stuck to 0,2,0,2 but that seems to be almost unheard of on here.

I've always thought it's hugely more advantageous to have two transfers than one transfer twice.

Of course I readily acknowledge the need to take big hits at times to restructure.

Hits are certainly more fun, and I can see the necessity at the start. Taking a hit to do e.g. Hazard to Fabregas and Mata to Sterling does seem a bit bonkers to me though.

Presumably the truth as usual lies somewhere in the middle - some weeks you're better off sitting tight and your hit costs you points and a better performing player, other weeks the 'perfect' strategy would have been -16.

I'd love to have seen your GW by GW last year - I'm not being judgemental about it, I'm well aware there are a million ways to play this game and I've not got the conceit to think this is the best one, just seems very very few people play the game the way I do avoiding hits like the plague - I think your method is more common but you've done it very successfully.

Read someone said that Mata --> Fabregas is the definition of knee jerking. I don't agree at all. Before this season we assumed that United would look like a new side with van Gaal. Pre season supported this assumption. The first match vs Swansea showed that United is still struggling with a lot of the same as last year, and facing the fact that maybe Mata and Rooney are just one too much from this side is not knee jerking imo. On top of this you earn team value and you can buy Mata back for a better price when they start to perform as a top team. I dont understand the argument that you picked Mata for a reason either. The reason was that you believed he was going to shine on a well functioning side. Nothing from the first match indicates any of that and I cant see why it is suppose to happen in the near future either. The team lacks quality players. It is as easy as that.

I'd still say you can't write this new United side and it is a new side (not necessarily a better one granted) off they still have the best fixtures for attacking players to score well and it might well be that the Swansea game gives them the kick up the backside they need. Its a new system and a new manager and we can't just tar this side with the same brush we did with the team last season off the back of one performance. For all we know Swansea could be a major surprise package this season and end up being last years Southampton

I agree you cant write them off season wise. But from the start when the other top teams proof their quality it is just an unnecessary risk to stick with too many United players.

I actually agree with this. Yes, they have great fixtures, but in competitive games their form has been pretty poor for a while.

Sometimes this site advocates waiting a little too much, perhaps even becoming a little dogmatic about it. Early bandwagons (see Ramsey and Toure last year) can pay off. Certainly with value. It's not a longterm, consistent tactic to take, but a few kneejerks a season is a measured risk in my mind.

I really believe that 1 bad game in the league means more than 6 preseason games yes. For what I know United can win the league but I think it is not worth the risk to stay with mata when you can pick so many proven midfielders from clubs without question mark written all over them.

Guys that finish top 10k or so every season. Do you achieve this by not taking hits throughout the season or only necessary hits if that makes sense? So for example I have been contemplating a 12 point hit that I posted and some of you may have seen. Would a hit of this nature be the type of moves to avoid? Or on the other hand taking this sort of hit early on would be OK. Or spread the transfers out over a few weeks to avoid any hits. I generally start the season off poorly and end up chasing big leads which I do make up come the end of the season but as this season I haven't started off to bad I'm wondering what my tactics should be?

        Jones>Clyne
        Young>Sterling
        Nasri>Fab
        Sturridge>Dzeko

I've had a lot of feedback for this proposed transfers and the general consensus is to avoid. My thinking behind is that I overlooked Man Uniteds general squad issues and now I don't think they will do as well as I initially thought whereas Southampton who I wrote off looked pretty good. Young was a filler if you like and I would bring Sterling in for him to keep Liverpool cover. Fab looks amazing and has great PL history and I'm sure he will finish top 4/5 this season. Sturrdige to Dzeko is to free up funds for the Sterling move and to keep City cover.

There is no secret formula, some are very successful at taking hits and still managing to finish in the top 10k. I think it would be an unlikely achievement if you took more than 15 hits in a season though.

Yes but this assumes you are doing well. If you aren't doing well then you need to make changes - and 1 transfer at a time will likely not be enough and you will fall too far behind. This game is not about saving 4 points here and there - its about having the right players at the right time to score you the most points. 🙂

Ive said this before, and people still dont get it. Which I am grateful for!

I've been playing for 3 seasons. Every season I have gradually become more patient and taken far less hits (I think I only took -8 last season) and my rank has been improving every year. Can't imagine that is the only factor but it has contributed.
So i'd say avoid the hits.

Finishing well has almost nothing to do with hits. Its to do with having the right players at the right time, to score you the most points. If your team is so far removed from the ideal that you will score poorly then only making 1 transfer at a time to save 4 points makes no sense.

Basically a well judged 4 pointer is no barrier to doing well and is actually the correct play in certain circumstances.

Too knee jerky to do eriksen --> sig? And potentially -4 for fletcher --> pelle (beastly and will score with the fixtures)

I actually took Eriksen out for Sig. Couldn't resist the Sigwagon. Realise it's a bit knee-jerky with QPR at home for Spurs next, but I think Sig will score more against Burnley and WBA than Eriksen will against QPR and Liverpool (as well as his two Europa games in that space of time).

Have had a good start but feel I need to get rid of Young...

    Krul

    Cahill/ Chester/ Kelly

    Hazard/ Ramsey/ Sterling/ Young

    Rooney/ Costa/ Jovetic

I can't see any long-term options at £5.5 or below so tempted to either:

    a) Young to JWP - looked good against Liverpool and a decent run of fixtures. Also gives me £0.5 to deal with Jovetic the week after

    b) Hazard & Young > Fab & Sig (-4) My midfield would then be sorted for the long term but hesitant to get rid of Hazard after one week, especially with Leicester next week. Would also mean I would be £0.1 short of upgrading Jovetic to Giroud/Bony

    c) Play Young and assess again next week
