Scout Notes – Gameweek 3 – Saturday

Diego Costa recovers from a hamstring problem to strike twice in Chelsea’s stunning win at Everton. Stoke stun champions City at the Etihad, United toil to a draw at promoted Burnley, Gylfi Sigurdsson steers Swansea to victory over West Brom, while Palace share the spoils with Newcastle in a six-goal thriller at St James’ Park.

Costa Recovers to Net Yet Again
Described as a “big doubt” ahead of the trip to Goodison by Jose Mourinho, the summer signing scored twice as Chelsea hammered Everton 6-3. Costa was sold by over 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers as a result of last week’s hamstring scare but, in a week where both United and City’s premium frontmen failed miserably, his consistency may well persuade many to simply buy back – with home matches against Swansea and Villa on either side of a trip to City in the next three, it’s difficult to see him not delivering the points once again.

Another Goal for Ivanovic
Chelsea’s marauding right-back continues to blaze a trail at the top of the defender rankings after serving up another set of attacking returns at Goodison. Jose Mourinho’s defence may be struggling to keep out their opponents right now – yesterday’s display was uncharacteristically poor at the back – but with two goals, an assist and five bonus points in the first three Gameweeks, the Serbian, despite his lofty 7.1 price tag, continues to look the best route into Mourinho’s backline.

Blues Midfielders Rack Up the Points
While Costa served up a 12-point return, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas owners will be a little concerned after the duo managed just an assist apiece in the Goodison rout. The pair were overshadowed by Nemanja Matic (a goal and two assists) and Ramires (a goal and assist) and their lack of overall impact, allied with Costa’s consistency, merely strengthens the Spain international’s claim as the most reliable route into Mourinho’s attack right now.

Naismith Nets Again
It’s three goals in as many appearances now for Everton’s budget striker. Tucked in behind Romelu Lukaku, Naismith added to goals against Leicester and Arsenal and now stands neck-and-neck with Costa at the top of the forward standings on 24 points. The Toffees have seven decent fixtures in the next nine to pick up in performance – upcoming trips to Liverpool and United means many may choose to overlook their main assets until the schedule eases in Gameweek 8, though.

United Stumble Once Again
Even with new boy Angel di Maria on board, the Red Devils were unable to find a way past Burnley in yesterday’s lunchtime encounter. Louis van Gaal retained the 3-4-1-2 system and handed the Argentine a role alongside Darren Fletcher in central midfield – this allowed Juan Mata to tuck in behind the front two, though the Spaniard was subbed off with a knock and may well be subject to sales on the back of another poor display. The fixtures may still be in United’s favour, but in this sort of form, many Fantasy managers will be re-assessing their options.

Stoke Stun the Etihad
Mark Hughes’ side upset the form book with a stunning 1-0 win at champions City. With Bojan Krkic warming the bench for the entire match, Mame Biram Diouf tucked in behind Peter Crouch and fired his first goal for the Potters to announce himself as a potential mid-price option ahead of a very favourable run of fixtures. Stoke now have home clashes with Leicester, Newcastle and Swansea allied with trips to QPR and Sunderland in the next five Gameweeks, offering every chance to maintain their momentum.

City Forwards Fail to Deliver
After scoring as a substitute in each of his first two appearances, Sergio Aguero was handed his first start of the season in yesterday’s loss. Despite lasting the full 90 minutes, the Argentine was unable to find a way past Asmir Begovic – City mustered just two shots on target over the entire match. Stevan Jovetic earned over 490,000 new owners last week after his brace against Liverpool but lasted just over an hour before making way for Edin Dzeko, and with Arsenal and Chelsea up next, his bandwagon may prove to be a short-lived one.

Austin the R’s Hero
Having watched his side suffer a 4-0 hammering at Spurs last weekend, Harry Redknapp switched from 3-5-2 to a 4-4-1-1 for the visit of Sunderland. With Loic Remy edging out the exit door, Charlie Austin recovered from a hamstring problem to lead the line, with Leroy Fer handed the role in “the hole” behind him. Austin’s winner suggests he may still be one to consider in the mid-price forward bracket, and with Remy’s departure looking likely, he looks assured of a starting berth for the R’s – with one home match in the next four, though, Redknapp’s side may be ones to watch for now.

Swans Midfielders Rack Up the Points
Nathan Dyer proved a deadly differential yet again after bagging a brace in a 3-0 home win over West Brom. Swansea’s flying winger added to last week’s strike against Burnley and continues to make a real case for consideration in our five-man midfields – owned by less than 2% of FPL managers heading into yesterday’s match, the 5.5-priced Dyer now sits second in the midfield standings in the FPL game.

Gylfi Sigurdsson picked up the points yet again and continues to make a mockery of his initial 6.0 price tag. Fielded behind Wilfried Bony once more, the Icelandic international served up a pair of assists, maintaining the form that has produced returns in all three of his appearances and taken him to the midfielders’ summit. The duo are clearly thriving under Garry Monk’s attacking approach, and while an upcoming trip to Chelsea may prove troublesome, Swansea then have five favourable fixtures (SOU, sun, NEW, sto, LEI) before the schedule takes a turn for the worse in Gameweek 10.

Schneiderlin Bags a Brace
The Saints midfielder was the unlikely hero as Ronald Koeman’s side picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph at West Ham. Schneiderlin scored just twice last season under Mauricio Pochettino but has already mirrored that tally after yesterday’s display and with the likes of Dusan Tadic failing to pick up the points, some may consider the 5.5-priced France international ahead of a very kind run of matches. Graziano Pelle is also on the radar after netting for the second match in succession. Having scored in the midweek cup win over Millwall, the summer signing seems to have picked up in confidence and now faces just one of last season’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks.

Magpies Defenders in the Goals
Newcastle’s goal drought finally came to an end yesterday after a 3-3 thriller with Palace at St James’ Park. While Paul Dummett’s budget appeal looks to be over after he was replaced by Massadio Haidara at left-back, Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat both strengthened their claims for consideration by bagging a goal apiece against the Eagles.

With the likes of Siem de Jong, Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella failing to net, youngster Rolando Aarons turned in an impressive display off the bench, scoring just six minutes after his introduction and also picking up an assist – at 5.0, he’s one to watch as Alan Pardew’s team prepare for a kind run of matches.

Warnock Sparks Palace Attack into Life
Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha were amongst the goals in the first match of Neil Warnock’s second spell at Selhurst Park. Intriguingly, the former returned from suspension to take his role on the right, while Zaha was introduced off the bench as a replacement for Dwight Gayle up front – we’d initially expected Zaha to take the right-flank berth but yesterday’s line-up suggests both could fit into the new manager’s plans ahead of home fixtures with Burnley and Leicester in the next three.

Unless you own Ivanovic, is GW5 the time to ditch your Chelsea defender or keep regardless of the fixtures ?

Oh, and Jose's tendencies to 'shut up shop' against the bigger teams...

Start of the season is statistically proven to be more erratic in terms of defensive returns. So I dont think defensive substitutions are the first priority and as you said chelsea could get a CS vs big teams. So unless I really dont have anything else to do I am not touching my defenders in general

AVL,cpl, mun and QPR in the next 6 after GW 5. Not too bad. Potential cleanies in the games against ARS and liv as well.

Probably not for me, Evs. Unless, I need the cash.

I'm thinking its time to ditch them now.

Chelsea are a far more powerful team going forwards now so defensive resilience is less of an issue.

We have already seen that Mourinho is happy to go out and attack with these players. I don't think they'll be worth that premium this season (Ivan aside)

Give Rooney a last chance with QPR at home. Given the trends we've seen so far (players getting heavily transferred out and then performing), I have a feeling that he will do the same as Jovetic/Mata/Costa.

Don't WC. Just accept you are going to have to take measures to get rid of Bojan and that means downgrading Mata or Hazard. Probably Mata.

Everyone has a limited budget and prices change daily. Taking advantage of this can in the long term reduce the weaknesses in your team as you have more money to spend. This is part of the game's strategy.

and you can't do that now?

Players are dropping prices super quick in relation to the rate at which they are rising.

you need to be flexible as an FPL manager - adjust your strategy accordingly and you can still benefit.

You can but there's a load of guessing as to when the prices will change. Hypthetically, I could sign a player before international games because any price changes will make it impossible. If the player doesn't rise until after the games or worse, gets injured, then I've taken a risk for no reason. That doesn't improve the game, its just adding another random element to it.

The game is based on random elements and risk management.

You try to predict the future in essence!

Knowing the price changes is simplifying the game.

Predicting player/team performance is the essence of the game.

Predicting price changes because you might get priced out of the moves you want to make based on the above is not good.

No it's not part of the games strategy, if you're objective it should actually be considered as cheating, hence the official website removed the data so sites can't pick up on it anymore.

It's strategy if you're basing yourself on player's results, the moment you go to sites like TotalFPL, it's not strategy anymore it's cheating. I bet everyone has gotten so used to looking up the price rises that they don't even realise that, but if you look at it in an objective way, it is cheating. You get an unfair advantage over people don't know about the site and the site aint part of FPL.

Its not cheating. The rules say player prices change based on transfer activty, the transfer page of FPL gives data for transfers in and out. TotalFPL, which is an extremely easy website to find, provides information on price changes to assist with decision making.

I can look up the rules of poker too and then put cameras everywhere that show me the cards of my opponents. It's cheating, end of story. If it was part of the official site it wouldn't be, but now it just is.

Doing a little bit of research to obtain information that is freely available to anyone with internet access is not cheating. Its like saying using this site for advice is cheating.

Dude, they obtain the price rises by bots, that are basically attacking the sites, making it slower, and retrieving codes which they have to 'crack', in order to find an algoritm. Does that sound legit to you and like information that is freely available to everyone? They're actually hacking the site and cracking a code.. The only stuff that is legit is the stuff on the FPL site. And comparing it to this site for advice is something totally different.

Regardless of how they get it, the information is freely available to everyone when its on TotalFPL and similar sites. I actually think there should be something similar to FISO/TotalFPL on the FPL site.

TotalFPL is/was a resource to help with decisions so it can be compared to FFS.

Maybe you're right in saying there should be something similar on the FPL site. That might actually be cool, but at this moment I still want to find out how everything changes when we're left in the dark about price rises/drops, it might actually be better this way.

I still think it's hypocrite to say that it's freely available to everyone tho, because it's not. If there would be a link on the FPL site it would be. But as of now, you have to do research and not everyone will do that and certainly not from the start. Some just play the game and don't know about the existence of sites like these and TotalFPL.

The crux of my gripe with it is that we don't know when players will change price. If anyone has made a transfer decision that leaves nothing in the bank but wants to wait until after internationals before clicking confirm they are screwed. If the information is there to say the prices are changing before then its up to the manager to take the risk or not. With the current situation people will end up taking risks for no reason. This isn't the scenario I'm currently facing but it will definitely happen at some point.

We obviously disagree with our views on what's freely available. I think it is as the information can easily be obtained for free on the internet and everyone playing the game has internet access. You think otherwise as the information exists outside of the FPL site which is fair enough, but I disagree 😛

It doesn't level the playing field. Anyone with an interest in playing FPL seriously can google "fantasy football price changes" and get totalfpl come up as the first link.

If I decide to bring a player in I shouldn't be forced to get them in early before international games in the worry of being priced out when they might not actually rise (or at least not rise before the games). The information should be there so I know if I need to take the risk of an early transfer or not. Having to guess doesn't improve the game.

Yes it does, you're so ridiculously biased because you want to know the exact price rises, you sound like a little kid.

Not everyone who plays FPL would think of looking that up. I bet there's players who don't even know there is price rises and if they know surely a lot of them won't think of a site like FPL. It took me a while before I found out about it, I missed the first gameweek in my league, which was a double gameweek and I ended up 1st nonetheless, because all the other people in my league didn't know about the price rises.

Also not everyone wants to make the effort to look it up every day/week. If no one knows exactly when players are going to rise, people are gonna focus less on price rises which brings an entirely knew approach/tactic to the game. Focus will be more on what the game is about, bringing in the best players and not the players that are rising/falling.

I sound like a kid for wanting to have more information available to aid my decisions. Ok...

Everyone playing FPL that has read the rules knows that prices change.

I'd argue that not knowing when players will change price means that more focus is on them (just look at all the discussion its generated) as you have to look into it more thoroughly and guess. Only takes a few seconds to look on an accurate TotalFPL and have it summarised.

No you sound like a kid because you aren't being objective and want all the information to be fed to you in one spoon.

If you don't know about the price drops/falls, more people will be sticking with the good players they have, because you can't be sure anymore if a player actually is going to rise (fast). Like for example Naismith, or Mata dropping in price. If you want to play the money game, it might even be more to your advantage to not know the prices, because some people will be paying less attention to it or won't take the risks involved now.

It might be better with the information available. But it might also be better to not have it available, It might actually be less frustrating and people might keep good prospect players instead of kneejerking them out for moneybandwagons. The price game isn't just an addition to the game anymore, something to help, it's starting to dictate what we do, it's making us chose the players, while some really aren't that good of an option. I'm sorry I called you a kid btw, I don't know what got into me.

Utd looked a little better when Rvp went off yesterday,Rooney on penos would make me hold out a bit longer

You could pretty much measure Rooney's productivity last season in peak and troughs when RVP wasn't and was playing respectively. I still am holding until QPR at home regardless but if RVP was out for a long period then Rooney would be locked for me.

What formation are people going with?
I feel like I need to change to a 343, been playing a 352 so far. Feel I need to downgrade a top midfielder to get 3 top strikers. Anyone else feel the same?

I've rarely if ever deviated from 3-4-3 and the occasional 4-3-3.

It all depends on the personnel, personally I wouldn't want to go without 3 decent strikers.

It's just when your strikers score, with the new bonus point system, they always seem to get bonus points, that's why I feel I need 3 strikers

    Would you WC this team??

    DDG - Elliot
    Hutton - Bruce - Lovren - Debuchy - Cahill
    Mata - Siggy - Hazard - Ramsey - Wanyama
    Rooney - Bojan - Aguero

    To this team......

    Krul - Mannone
    Hutton - Duff - Ivanovic - Janmatt - Clyne
Sterling - Siggy - Fabregas - Ramsey - Ward Prowse
    Costa - Naismith - Aguero

    Thanks very much!

I think you just need to grasp the nettle and take a hit to restructure without Bojan. DDG is an almost guaranteed CS next week and I wouldn't sell Rooney pre-QPR at home.

I can do Bojan to Naismith and Rooney to Costa for -4 but missing out on Ivanovic's hauls and Mata is depressing me 🙁

I suppose the news on RVP if true means I could hold Mata for another while...

No rush to change Rooney, Man U should do well next week so holding on to Mata and Rooney should not be a big problem.

I'm getting a bit fed up of the media banging on about last seasons drubbings by Liverpool over Spurs...How many new faces are going to line up today between those two teams ?...quite a lot..it means very little. Should be a good game.

The defence was so makeshift in that 0-5 though. Vertonghen alone makes a huge difference to them and he was out last time.

Liverpool have come down a notch losing Suarez. Spurs have stepped it up with a better manager (they already had good players) pretty even game today. Pool slight favourites

This, although I'd say more than a notch. I reckon only 3 of that Spurs team who lost that day will start today. Vertonghen, Kaboul and Eriksen were injured, Adebayor exiled, Rose injured too.

I'd guess for Spurs there will be a maximum of 2 outfield players starting today who played last time...

The other thing that has annoyed me a little this summer has been the whole 'Spurs wasted the Gareth Bale money but look at how sensibly Liverpool are spending their windfall'.

I'm sorry but stood here now how is Lallana, Lovren, Markovic, Can, Moreno and Lambert proven to be any decent business at all? And Given how Eriksen and Lamela are performing I think it shows that jumping to conclusions is rarely very smart.

That "Spurs wasting the Bale money" was rubbish in the first place. Those were great buys, apart from Loldado. They just used them very badly. This summers best deal for them was to hold Lamela and especially Capoue who was so close to leave.

Yes agree - thank god they didn't listen to Sherwood in January when he wanted to shift Capoue.

I also never read any single person in the media, fan forums or on FFS who called Soldado as a dud before he joined.

Lol. I did. Not precisely shit, but mediocre. He's not up to the top level. Has never been. He's good enough if you have a team that can outplay its opponent loudly, as Valencia did against most La Liga teams. But opposed to legend, his finishing is nothing spectacular, and he offers nothing else but the goals. And, he has never performed against bigger teams, which is something that Spurs have to play against a lot. Always an overhyped player.

Interesting, not doubting your prescience at all I just never read anyone sceptical about him until after he'd flopped, there were just hundreds of captain hindsights afterwards so well done for calling it early.

There was a time when Del Bosque picked him over Negredo for Spain wasn't there? I do remember one brace against Real Madrid too but Having watched Defoe/Pavyluchenko/Keane and Crouch for a couple of years I was pretty excited by him as it felt like that sort of finishing was exactly what we'd been missing.

At least he can take a good penalty 🙂
