Scout Report – Toby Alderweireld

Southampton wrapped up their business for the summer by sealing a one-year loan deal for defender Toby Alderweireld from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid during last Monday’s transfer deadline day. Upon completing the transfer, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hailed the quality and top-flight experience of his latest signing:

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring Toby to the club. He is a strong defender, and is also very good at building up the play when we play out from the back. He played in the top league in Spain and against top teams in Europe, so he has a lot of confidence and experience, and he has a big future because he is still young. We needed competition in our squad, and with Toby here we now have a lot of possibilities and quality.”

Alderweireld, meanwhile, admitted he’s keen to work under the Dutchman and stressed his eagerness to kick on in his new surroundings:

“Koeman’s style of play fits me and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a very big step for my career. I had to make the right decision. I think Southampton in this stage of my career is the right step. They are up and coming, a very warm club. It’s something I’ve been searching for and it’s great that I find it here. Now, I want to give something back to the club and do all my best to help the team. It’s nice to hear that he (Koeman) likes my play. He called me and said that he really wants me to come. A trainer that believes in me is really important.”

The History

Tobias Albertine Maurits Alderweireld is yet another product of the indefatigable Ajax youth academy. Having impressed as a youngster, the Belgian earned his first-team debut in the season of 2008/09 during which he went on to make several appearances in the Eredivisie and Europa League. The following campaign, Alderweireld – at the age of just 20 – established himself in Ajax’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen, and finished the season with the reputed title of ‘Ajax Talent of the Year’.

In the following three seasons, Alderweireld was an integral part of the Ajax side that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles, scoring five goals in the league and a further five in his side’s Champions League pursuits.

Following his success with the Dutch giants, the young defender moved to Atletico at the start of the 2013/14 season for a €7 million fee. However, game-time proved hard to come by for the Belgian, who made just 12 appearances for his new side as they pipped Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final (in which Alderweireld took to the field for the final stages of extra time).

Having made his senior debut in 2009, Alderweireld now has 37 caps to his name for Belgium’s national side. The most recent of those appearances came in this summer’s World Cup, in which the defender started four of Belgium’s five games, conceding just three goals.

The Prospects

Though last season may have been a disappointment for Alderweireld on a personal level, his move to Southampton should breathe new life into the 25-year-old’s career. The Belgian’s experience on the continent looks set to see him instilled at the hear of the Saints’ back-four alongside Jose Fonte, which should all but ending the game time of Maya Yoshida, who has until now stood out as the only sub-5.0 route into Koeman’s defence.

Although Alderweireld was occasionally used at right back during his years with Ajax, it seems highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne’s starting spot will come under threat. Alderweireld has been introduced to the Fantasy Premier League game at a starting price of 5.0, a factor which could propel him up and above the 5.5-priced Fonte in our reckoning if he does, as expected, secure a starting role.

Whilst Clyne’s potential for attacking returns still guarantees his higher place in our Watchlist right now, Alderweireld himself demonstrated a propensity for a stunning strike on a number of occasions during his years at Ajax – a couple of those in the near future for the Saints would see the Belgian’s allure increase immensely.

The defender couldn’t be handed a kinder schedule to settle in to his new surroundings. Southampton are one of only five teams to be handed four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and one look at their schedule (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) suggests they have every chance of continuing on from the Gameweek 3 win at West Ham. With a summer of upheaval now over, Koeman will be optimistic that his new-look side can click into gear and Alderweireld’s arrival certainly suggests they’ve made a step in the right direction.

You have a decent bench for this gw, so hold on ramsey. It will just cause problems getting him again

I think hold, but welbeck and pelle could be good this gw. I honestly think Arsenal will play well with welbeck in the team and create more chances against Man City

Can anyone suggest few cheap bench fodders (for UCL) who start?
And whom will you rate as essential in UCL fantasy?
    Thanks! 🙂

Ronaldo if he's fit is essential.

Sterling, Sergio Ramos essential too for me. Moreno is a steal at 4.0 as well. Oblak/moya combo in net for Atletico is great too.

There's an incredible number of good options in the UCL fantasy game, and generally all cheaper than in the FPL game which is nice.

Thanks mate. In current draft, I have Ronaldo, Ramos and Moya... Thinking of Bale too but it unbalance midfield

        1. rickardinho

Moya won't start ahead of Oblak. Oblak was excellent at Benfica and has been brought in as No.1 as I understand it.

          IIRC my team is:

          Oblak-Moya
          Ramos, Ivanovic, Moreno, Kurzawa, Uchida
Bale, Sterling, Raul Garcia, Pogba, Do Nascimento
          Hulk, Sturridge, J. Martinez

Though subject to change if Ronaldo and Reus get fit before GW1 and once Suarez gets back. Most of these guys have good home GW1 fixtures which is nice 🙂

Team looks good, an overall balance team which I like to have too 😀 But tough with that forward line...
Seeing lots of love for Martinez, can get him instead of Ibra.

Yeah my forward line isn't the strongest, but my thinking is the following:
              - Ronaldo injured (tbc until when)
              - Ibra has a tough group with Barca in GW2
              - Costa is an injury doubt and may get rested against the weak CL sides
              - Muller and Robben tough group, ditto for Lewandowski. Muller won't play up front with Lewandowski there either.

and I have Bale there too which sort of makes up for the lack of world class strikers beyond Sturridge

hard to argue against that forward line, but surely the rest of the team is in tatters value wise after spending almost 40m on 3 forwards?

            Current draft:
            Moya, 3m
Ramos, Durm, Mbemba, M. Sergio, Eliseu
            Bale, Bellararbi, Benat, Xhaka, Brahami
            CR7, Messi, Ibra
Have no idea about (Good) Mid-Price midfielders.
Can downgrade Ibra to Costa/Robben and upgrade defenders/Midfielders.

That's the ideal forward line. But it shrinks options in other areas. I've gone without Ibra for now.

I'm not sure if he would have started without the injury. The Kun & Jov partnership failed pretty miserably v's Stoke.

I have a feeling City will either go with Kun on his own upfront, or will play Dzeko & Kun.

Don't like any of the proposed transfers you listed though

F€&k! My team is in tatters.

P Jones, Chambers, Ramsey, Mata, Costa, Jovetic, Rooney all should probably go.

Time to wildcard at this late stage of the international break?

I have similar worries to you (marginally less severe, but still bad) and I'm holding on to my WC.

      Do you have any transfers?

I don't think Costa will have a problem, Rooney is fine and is even a captain option this week 🙂
Mata needs to go as well, but I think he should still play this weekend as he will be fresh from having no international fixture so that can wait.
Rambo & Jones wait for pressers, hopefully at least 1 might be ok.

Sell Chambers no matter what happens

Ramsey may be fully fit. I wouldnt take a hit to get rid of him except if we have news thats he ll be benched or out. Jones... never take a hit for a defender, especially with these fixtures he may as well start this GW. Costa... i ll never again trust Mourinho i ditched him before the Everton game and it did cost me 14 points... Only Jovetic must go. I would buy Pelle or Ings if you need a differential with good fixtures.

Can't believe Rooney is sold to a price fall. At least half a week before and 1-2 matches we before we'll know how he'll play with Falcao. Bet many of the casuals selling Rooney so early also have Injury doubts Costa, Jovetic, Ramsey, Jones etc to deal with now.

I see a lot of people willing to take a hit or two this week. Maybe saving those 4 points will be a big differential in itself?
I was going to bench Siggy and play Naismith, but if Ramsey is out, I could just play Siggy. Sound like a plan?

    1. La Roja

You shouldn't be benching Siggy at all rates anyway. He terrorised Turkey yesterday, can see him nicking a goal vs Chelsea

Yeah, but if I can't play Naismith against WBA, when will I? Others are Sterling, Ramsey, Lamela, Costa and Rooney.

Playing against a Turkey side playing their first qualifier away against a very organized Iceland team is a far cry from being up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge though. I don't see what the issue is if you have an in-form Naismith to play against a weak WBA instead.

      exactly what im doing.

I have naismith and tadic who will both play this weekend with Siggy first sub incase Ramsey doesn't start. If Ramsey is gonna be benched I might even start Ramsey as first sub to not risk him only playing 15 mins

You should have one player to bench every week, having 8 starters wont help you, every week you ll lose benching points. Out of those i would bench Naismith or Ramsey if not fit, considering they wont have guaranteed 90 mins.

I'm hoping there are some UCL players on the boards today...

Having a quick look at my UCL team... this is what I have so far...

    Moya (Pardo)
    Ramos Jedvaj Moreno Mbemba (Ivanovic)
    Sterling Bellarabi Verrati (Fabregas 4.5m)
    Ronaldo(C1) Messi(C2) J.Martinez

I have 4.5m to spend on a 5th mid but I'm considering either:

    A - Get Do Nasci (3m) and using the extra 1.5m to upgrade J.Martinez > Robben/Muller/Mandz
B - Get Do Nasci (3m) and using the extra 1.5m to upgrade Moya/Mbemba/someone else
C - Get one of: Praet/Neves/Manduca/someone else and punt on them...

    Help greatly appreciated...

    What do we think?

Do you think its more important to have a strong attack rather than balanced team with a relatively strong midfield?

      1. Zep
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

I have think their are some mental bargains in midfield this year, so I reckon I'm strong throughout...

In past seasons I have always tended to switch to 3 big strikers, so I'm gonna start off with 3 big ones this time to save me the hassle...

But strong attack is the most important considering captainability...

Apart from Sterling and Fabregas i don't think you're midfield is very potent at all. Verrati is great but won't score many in his deep Gerrard/Pirlo role so is a bit of a waste. And Bellarabi has really little experience so can hardly be counted on.

I've gone for Sterling-Bale-Pogba-Raul Garcia-Do Nasci in midfield, with Hulk-Sturridge-Jackson M. up front. Zlat and the Bayern boys have tough groups, but if Ronaldo is fit I will probably work him in as well.

Keep Jackson Martinez. Easyish group and on form.

Think ill captain Aguero this week. If Jovetic has any sign of an injury, he will probably be benched, since their partnership didn't work well last week, and Aguero needs to be utilised before he injures himself again. Without possibly Ramsey and their defence looking shaky, I reckon City could get a fee past them.

injuries are the main reason i have swtched to a 352, as all eight players are good.
Peviously if Ramsey was injured i would of been forced to play Albrighton , Now i get Naismith playing.
Means there less pressure to transfer , and with slow price movements there no need to take ramsey out

Studge, Costa, Roon, Falcao, Kun, Ade, Balotelli, Wellbeck and I think long-term one of Dzeko/Jovetic will emerge as a great option. I also haven't written off Lukaku, Bony & RVP just yet either

You'll have to wait for pressers. My main worry if I were you, would be Studge. I really think Costa will be fine though.

Ramsey I have no idea, but lets hope Wenger lets us know on Friday

Your priority is Sturridge. You cant afford 11.5 mil on the bench. Wait for further news before taking a hit. I would keep the other 3 "injured" players, i just dont trust Mourinho and his mind games and Ramsey could be fit.

    Please advise,
    DDG, Gilks
    Wisdom, Cahill, Clyne, Naylor, Coloccini
    Lamela, Sigurdsson, Sterling, RAMSEY, Marney
    JOVETIC, Rooney, COSTA

    1ft- 0.7M in the Bank.

An injury scare or 2 more than I need.

    What would you do?
I am prepared to take a hit so may go with a double transfer.
