Scout Report – Toby Alderweireld

Southampton wrapped up their business for the summer by sealing a one-year loan deal for defender Toby Alderweireld from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid during last Monday’s transfer deadline day. Upon completing the transfer, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hailed the quality and top-flight experience of his latest signing:

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring Toby to the club. He is a strong defender, and is also very good at building up the play when we play out from the back. He played in the top league in Spain and against top teams in Europe, so he has a lot of confidence and experience, and he has a big future because he is still young. We needed competition in our squad, and with Toby here we now have a lot of possibilities and quality.”

Alderweireld, meanwhile, admitted he’s keen to work under the Dutchman and stressed his eagerness to kick on in his new surroundings:

“Koeman’s style of play fits me and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a very big step for my career. I had to make the right decision. I think Southampton in this stage of my career is the right step. They are up and coming, a very warm club. It’s something I’ve been searching for and it’s great that I find it here. Now, I want to give something back to the club and do all my best to help the team. It’s nice to hear that he (Koeman) likes my play. He called me and said that he really wants me to come. A trainer that believes in me is really important.”

The History

Tobias Albertine Maurits Alderweireld is yet another product of the indefatigable Ajax youth academy. Having impressed as a youngster, the Belgian earned his first-team debut in the season of 2008/09 during which he went on to make several appearances in the Eredivisie and Europa League. The following campaign, Alderweireld – at the age of just 20 – established himself in Ajax’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen, and finished the season with the reputed title of ‘Ajax Talent of the Year’.

In the following three seasons, Alderweireld was an integral part of the Ajax side that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles, scoring five goals in the league and a further five in his side’s Champions League pursuits.

Following his success with the Dutch giants, the young defender moved to Atletico at the start of the 2013/14 season for a €7 million fee. However, game-time proved hard to come by for the Belgian, who made just 12 appearances for his new side as they pipped Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final (in which Alderweireld took to the field for the final stages of extra time).

Having made his senior debut in 2009, Alderweireld now has 37 caps to his name for Belgium’s national side. The most recent of those appearances came in this summer’s World Cup, in which the defender started four of Belgium’s five games, conceding just three goals.

The Prospects

Though last season may have been a disappointment for Alderweireld on a personal level, his move to Southampton should breathe new life into the 25-year-old’s career. The Belgian’s experience on the continent looks set to see him instilled at the hear of the Saints’ back-four alongside Jose Fonte, which should all but ending the game time of Maya Yoshida, who has until now stood out as the only sub-5.0 route into Koeman’s defence.

Although Alderweireld was occasionally used at right back during his years with Ajax, it seems highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne’s starting spot will come under threat. Alderweireld has been introduced to the Fantasy Premier League game at a starting price of 5.0, a factor which could propel him up and above the 5.5-priced Fonte in our reckoning if he does, as expected, secure a starting role.

Whilst Clyne’s potential for attacking returns still guarantees his higher place in our Watchlist right now, Alderweireld himself demonstrated a propensity for a stunning strike on a number of occasions during his years at Ajax – a couple of those in the near future for the Saints would see the Belgian’s allure increase immensely.

The defender couldn’t be handed a kinder schedule to settle in to his new surroundings. Southampton are one of only five teams to be handed four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and one look at their schedule (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) suggests they have every chance of continuing on from the Gameweek 3 win at West Ham. With a summer of upheaval now over, Koeman will be optimistic that his new-look side can click into gear and Alderweireld’s arrival certainly suggests they’ve made a step in the right direction.

Would you change anything about my team for GW 4?

    Krul Mannone
    Wisdom Terry Taylor (Chester Moore)
Fabregas Ramsey Henderson Siggy ( Marney )
    Costa Rooney Sturridge

    2 FT and 0.1 ITB

Much appreciated if you could suggest ideas

I am thinking Sturridge and Hendo -> Falcao/Balotelli and Sterling

    Yes or no?

    Bego - (4.0)
    Dier* - Jones* - Clyne
    Rambo* - Mata* - Sterling - Siggy
    Costa* - Dzeko* - Roon
Bench: Colo - Marney - Wisdom
    1FT & 0.3 ITB

Would really appreciate some advice pls guys. I don't really want to wildcard now, but I have fitness/rotation doubts over: Jones, Rambo, Dier, Mata, Costa & Dzeko. I have hopes the last 4 will all feature this weekend though.

So what to do to fix the problem with my free transfer? (Will wait until after pressers to confirm btw)

    A) Jones > Moreno
    B) Dier > Moreno
    C) Rambo > Cesc
    D) Dzeko > Ade
    E) Jones>Moreno & Rambo>Cesc (-4)
    F) Wildcard you idiot!
    F) Another suggestion?

You have 5 defenders with nice fixtures, so no change there imo. Mata, Dzeko should start and play 90 mins and Costa, Rambo have diffixult fixtures and they ll do whatever it takes to start. I would keep, at least until you have news that one of them wont start or play at all

Alright guys, I'd love some ideas about what to do with this team...

    Krul - Elliot
    Terry - Clyne - Caulker - Chester - Hutton
    Sterling - Fabregas - Siggy - Ramsey(?) - Marney
    Rooney - Adebayor - Jovetic(?)

    1FT; 2.2 ITB.

Really stuck atm, Ramsey has complicated my initial plan...

I would play Marney 1 week instead of Ramsey...because Ramsey would comeback the next GW.
Jovetic I would remove to either Pelle or Welbeck...but price changes aren't effecting much..so I would say wait till the Friday Pressers..

Your priority there is probably Jovetic and the person I'd want in is Costa. But the maths doesn't add up and Costa is a slight injury doubt this week.

Wait for pressers and if Rambo is out and Costa is in, then I'd probably do Rambo > Tadic/Lamela & Jov > Costa

Madness to not be bringing Sterling or Costa in this week?

Was initially all set on Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa (4 points), but the injuries to Costa, Jovetic and Ramsey have changed things I think.

Assuming they are injured, now looking at Jovetic -> Adebayor with my freebie, and perhaps Ramsey -> Sterling for a hit (although only if he's confirmed out).

There will be quite a few hits flying around this week, so could work out great to start ahead, plus Ade has a decent couple of fixtures, and after this week, so does Bony....

    Thoughts?

    Krul, Elliot
    Terry, Clyne, Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy, Albrighton
    Rooney, Bony, Jovetic

    Bank 0.4m, 1 freebie

Could well be right Doos, but breaking it down I don't think Ramsey/Sanchez -> Sterling is worth a hit (unless Ramsey is injured), and there's a good chance that Jose might even rest Costa this w/e if he's carrying a knock given they have a CL game tie and then mcy next week. Food for thought....

I dunno about that - scored over 20 goals for Barca last season and his stats this season have been very good. Seems to be hogging set pieces too.

I do agree that Welbeck looks a great shout though - lining him up as my Bony replacement in GW8 as we have a few tricky games before then (MCY, che, TOT in the next 4)

I know he was awesome for Barca and no doubt he is a class player .. not as good as Di Maria imo but a good player

Quite liking Ramsey & Jov -> Sterling & Ade (if Ramsey and Jov are confirmed out), or Sanchez & Jov -> Sterling & Ballo if Ramsey is confirmed fit.

Good news. Sprained mine the other week and I was fine to play footy a few days later, but it did aggravate it. Depends on the severity I guess, but he probably went off for safety and due to the shock of it. These things hurt like hell right after they happen, but the pain eases. I couldn't walk for 15 minutes after I did mine in.

    Begovic (Krul)
    Shawcross Ivan PV (Duff Coloccini)
Tadic Di Maria Fab Sterling Siggy
Welbeck Sturridge (if fit, costa to replace if fit, Rooney if neither) - Jutty from Burnley sub.

same as me going pure 3-5-2, I like that midfield. I have Siggy-Sterling-Fab-Lamela-Ramsey-Costa-Rooney (no WC) and also doubling up on Stoke defence for next few weeks. CS at home to Leicester after keeping one away to Man City?!

I would say that Ramsey and Costa are looking likely that they will be fit. Hopefully the Arsenal presser will be helpful. Sturridge probably won't be risked against Villa, I can see a 4-3-3 being played with Balotelli in the middle.

    Hi all,
    DDG, Gilks
    Wisdom, Cahill, Clyne, Naylor, Coloccini

    Lamela, Sigurdsson, Sterling, RAMSEY, Marney
    JOVETIC, Rooney, COSTA

    1ft- 0.7M in the Bank.

An injury scare or 2 more than I need.
    ATM thinking-

    Ramsey- Di Maria,
    Jovetic- Welbeck

My free swap of silva-sterling doesn't look so good now we doubts over

    Jones
    Costa
    Ramsey
    Weak bench.

Should of waited esp fact sterling only went up 0.1

With new price system it seems best to hold off rather than play money game

I had a decent start bit now in a bit of a pickle. Have Jones, Chambers, Bruce, Baird, Mata, Ramsey, Marney, Rooney, Costa and Jovetic. Is it worth wildcarding? The defence is the priority for me, think Rooney, Costa and Ramsey will all play this weekend, maybe Mata too if Falcao starts on the bench. Does Chalobah take Marney's place? Only 1 ft and nothing in the bank, but don't mind taking a hit, maybe even 2

    UFPL :

    a) Falcao, Hazard & Henderson or Chadli (giving me 3 Chelsea in the front 14 - too much ??)
    b) Sturridge, Di Maria & Chadli (better balanced)

Leaning towards b. Any advice gratefully received
