Scout Mission – Gameweek 12

With the international break finally behind us, we turn our attentions to domestic matters once again. Chelsea’s trio of midfield options, Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero’s tussle for the armband, Southampton’s form before the fixtures turn nasty and Louis van Gaal’s tactical tinkering are all on this week’s lunchtime menu.

The Blues’ Midfield Options…
With plenty of great fixtures lying in wait for Jose Mourinho’s side, Fantasy managers are currently queuing up to invest in their talented midfield. The three main options all offer different plus points. Cesc Fabregas’ consistency has attracted over 52.5% of FPL managers, though with the Spaniard just one booking away from a ban, those yet to invest will be looking for alternatives. At 8.4, Oscar’s value could yet be the best option, though Eden Hazard has the underlying stats to suggest he’s set to step up. A big performance from any of the three at home to West Brom may well prove a persuasive case for selection over the next few Gameweeks as the league leaders march on relentlessly at the summit.

The Hammers’ Rearguard at Goodison…
Having grabbed a clean sheet against Aston Villa last time out, and with good fixtures to follow, could the east Londoners be about to emerge as viable mid-price defensive assets? To convince us further, they will have to keep out a side that have failed to score just once this season when they meet Everton this weekend, though bearing in mind the Toffees have doubts over seven players, Big Sam will be quietly confident of keeping the Merseysiders at bay.

Costa and Aguero’s armband battle…
Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero go into the weekend as massive favourites in our Captain Poll once again, and owners of both will be naturally torn over whom to hand the armband to. Aguero’s recent form and ability to earn bonus when scoring weighs it in his favour, but Costa has been rested for a fortnight now and, having only failed to score in two of his nine league appearances, has rarely let us down. Given that have great fixtures ahead, getting the captaincy call correct between this pair looks key over the next few weeks, with both having the potential to run riot.

Austin against the Magpies…
The QPR striker has managed four goals in his last three now, including strikes against Chelsea and City, yet still boasts an ownership of 3% going into this weekend. Newcastle, meanwhile, have conceded just once in their previous four, though with captain Fabricio Coloccini ruled out, Austin has the platform to further underline his credentials ahead of a trio of tempting home fixtures against Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in his next five. If West Ham’s Diafra Sakho is ruled out with a back problem again, Austin could be poised to emerge as the most appealing budget frontman ahead of that schedule.

Burnley’s Backline at the Britannia…
The Clarets achieved their first clean sheet in six against Hull in Gameweek 11, taking their tally to four for the season, more than Chelsea or Everton, for example. With three home matches in their following four after Saturday’s trip to Stoke, can Sean Dyche’s replicate the resilience that earned them three successive shut-outs over Gameweeks 3-5, and offer us excellent value for their sub-5.0 price tags? Fantasy managers may yet reconsider the likes of Kieran Trippier is he can kick on from his Gameweek 11 haul of 12 points.

Giroud’s impact on the Gunners…
Arsene Wenger has a tendency to ease players back into action after they return from injury, though his hand may be forced if Danny Welbeck misses out with the hamstring knock sustained whilst on duty with England. Even so, the Gunners boss could opt to move Welbeck to the flank to accommodate Giroud alongside Alexis Sanchez in the front two. With a number of cheaper frontline options thriving right now, Welbeck looks to be on his last chance for many after averaging just 3.5 points per game across his last six, and unless he is able to transfer his international form to the Premier League against former club United this weekend, that 16% ownership looks set to slide.

The Saints’ form before the fixture storm..
Monday night’s trip to Villa precedes a terrible schedule for Ronald Koeman’s outfit, and presents their big assets with a final chance to convince managers to retain their services before the going gets rough. Indeed, many are looking to transfer out in Gameweek 13, but a fruitful performance from Dusan Tadic, if fit, or Graziano Pelle may make some think twice due to the duo’s decent value. Another clean sheet could also persuade us to hold their defence, given they’ve conceded only five goals so far this campaign. Worryingly, though, they’ve only played two of last season’s top eight thus far, and lost both, which perhaps may be read as a sign that temporarily shedding our rearguards of the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne could be a wise move.

Kane’s Minutes at the KC..
The Spurs youngster was handed the full 90 minutes last time out in his first start of season against Stoke, and having notched a brace for England Under-21s in midweek, his form continues to flourish. Mauricio Pochettino moved to 4-2-3-1 for the Potters clash, dropping both Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado to the bench: another start for Kane at Hull in this formation will provide us with a much clearer indication of his place in the pecking order from here on in.

Van Gaal’s tactics at the Emirates…
The Dutchman has conceded that he has already tinkered too much with his formation and tactics this season, but his hand could be forced again with Daley Blind sidelined and Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria also injury concerns for the Gunners encounter. Van Gaal may have Phil Jones and Jonny Evans back in defence, however, and a lack of full back options could even see United line up with a three man backline on Saturday. With Radamel Falcao also in with a chance of featuring, it could be all change further up the field as well, with a midfield diamond and front two a possible option for Van Gaal’s top-heavy squad.

        Ouch.

I have Baines, Wilson and S. Taylor. But I really can't be arsed taking a hit in case Baines doesn't play, especially when it'd be the second I've done this week.

I've the same three, I'm just going to hope for the best!

Not ideal though considering I was intending on playing them all...

            Here's hoping Leighton comes through.

I did a hit early on to get Downing and Costa for Welbeck and ADM. The Downing knock is annoying (I had no idea he'd even been called up), but on the plus side the two I sold are also doubts with a tough game ahead of them.

I may only have 10 or even 9 when all is said and done, but I'd rather that than sell players I want next week anyway. The only difference if I waited would've maybe been someone else over Downing, but I have no idea who.

@Davies, what was your thinking on the Hernandez>Eto'o trade, if I may ask? 🙂

Purely fixtures, I think. Eto'o is getting a good run of games, in the better team and stats look good. Generally better than Hermamdez.

      Your thoughts?

        My take is two-fold

        1. Whilst Eto'o has started 3 in a row recently, most of his game time has been as a second striker in the hole behind Lukaku, and with Barkley back and Mirallas fit soon too he should see diminished gametime. Its also relevant that the games he started (burnley, sunderland, and another i can't remember) were against weaker teams, and he's unlikely to start many games regularly when the tough ones come think and fast.

        Other factors:
        - Lukaku has only 1 significant injury, ie. that ankle injury last season that kept him out for 4-5 weeks, so counting on Eto'o becoming No.1 is very hopeful indeed.
        - Eto'os gametime is unpredictable, so you'll be left second-guessing yourself if you should start him or not, whereas with Abel you get the consistent 1 point return.

        2. That said, Eto'o could well outscore Abel, since Abel plays for a worse team (in fact the worst attacking team after Burnley), but you might have done better than to get a rotation-risk striker who was actually not drafted but rather picked off free agents (when Abel was picked in the 5th round, just two picks ahead of Milner fwiw...;) )

Anyhow, Eto'o could be a shrewd signing if he continues to get gametime, but I was a little bit surprised by it initially. Martinez called him a "blessing from the football gods" or something to that effect this week, so maybe I'm underestimating him a little bit.

Hull, Villa, and Burnley won't score many goals this season because the service is so poor, hence why someone like Hernandez had such bad stats, and probably why it might be a good move still. Time will tell.

          Agree with everything.

Martinez and the fans love Eto'o, so that's a good sign. Also, having Ings means if/when he gets dropped, I'll play him for the foreseeable future. 😉

As I think I alluded to, you're probably better off playing Eto'o most games as he's likely to get more goals than Ings this season. He'll get more service in 30 mins as a sub than Ings gets in 90 minutes in most fixtures. It'll mean getting more 0's, but atleast you'll get more 4-5 pointers rather than just a steady stream of 1's from Ings. My opinion at least. I'm only interested in Ings as a means to rebalance my team, but I can do that via free agents too, with Jutkiewicz and Riviere having very similar underlying stats as Ings for example.

In the last 4 games, only Tadic(22) created more chances than Navas (14), and Milner (9) also had a big role in the total 62 chances created by City (which was highest in the league). With nice fixtures coming up I'd say they're both pretty good value to have. As I can tell you need a midfield boost, but you're unlikely to find better statistical value in return for a Burnley forward than either of the deals I've offered.

I'm just interested in keeping Ings. I think he has potential. Great fixtures coming up for Burnley, he's inform and likely to score whenever Burnely do.

All 3 of your forwards have decent fixtures though, so its a waste to keep them all since you can only play maximum of 2... So it would be logical to move some of the forward value to midfield instead.

For example, I had 5 midfielders until 10 days ago, but to avoid a benching-headache I traded Ramsey>Coleman and Cabella>J-Rod to balance my numbers a bit, as I was being forced to bench good players in midfield. In your case you're forcing yourself to bench one of Eto'o, Ayoze, and Ings every week, including this weekend (which I'm guessing will in fact be Ings himself).

I offered you Milner as a straight swap, then Navas, or Milner+Yun (with one of your free-agent material in return (ie. Jedinak/Bardsley/Wilson/Buckley)

I know I'm not alone in this, but.... yellows galore. Only 1 FT and 0 in the bank. Any ideas, Fine Folk of Fantasy Football Scout? (FFFFS)

    Forster (McCarthy)
    Baines* Clyne Clichy (N.Taylor, Moore)
    Fabregas* ADM* Sanchez Siggy Boyd
    Aguero Pelle Sakho*

My instinct is that ADM will play, the others I'm less convinced about. I don't really want to lose any of them, though, except possibly Fabregas due to his looming suspension thing.

I'm ALMOST tempted to just write the week off and save the transfer, or to transfer Fabs to Oscar.

    Any thoughts?

There'll be lots of people taking unnecessary hits this week and I don't plan on being one of them.

Would make sense, but I'm really bitter that I brought in Sakho last week instead of Austin. Only because I did it late at night and had convinced myself I could afford Sakho but not Austin - Austin was cheaper, and scored!

I'm not sure though, looking at fixtures. Although I do have a nagging feeling that - having brought him in last week - I've massively missed the boat on Sakho. Could see him going full-Zaki very soon.

Just got stomped on, no early suggestions that it's anything too bad, and I think he's more or less the first name on Van Gaal's team sheet if he's anything like fit. (He was rumoured to have been injured in the warmup the other week but was thrown in regardless.)

Giving him 2 more GWs and then check again for GW14.

Just thinking if you go for that team you would be playing baines, clyne and probably dummet this week. Meaning your Austin v dummet. Not that it can't work out but if on WC would be chance to increase ceiling for potential points

i am in same position with baines, colo, fabs & sakho flagged
meaning i could end up with wisdom, duff and mason in team
but having the doubts about WCing will probably mean i don't. I think you will still get at least 10 players playing, and they alone are good enough to save the week.
your WC looks similar to the one i was thinking of next week, but i can't see it getting you much more points this week to justify it.
to help me decide on WC i usually do a RMT for both for next few weeks to see if predicted returns are worth it

You'd better hope so or Leicester will be in big trouble. 6 pointers!

I'd enjoy if Leicester stayed though, they've been good value entertainment wise playing mostly attacking football. Was really impressed by how they played vs Arsenal and United, though its those battles at the bottom that will define the season, not the big games. Certainly hope you help send money-bags QPR down again, they're a joke of a club 😀

Exactly. And, so far, we've crumbled against the bottom teams, for some reason. We did a job on QPR last season at their place, winning 1-0 but totally different class. I want the other two promoted sides to feck off back down. QPR are a joke and Burnley aren't good enough.

I do like Burnley, simply because they've got promotion with one of the lowest (if not THE lowest) budgets in the Championship, and it would be quite incredible if they stayed up. Can't see it happening though... you need goals to stay up, and they haven't got any.

This week is an absolute crap shoot on the fringes of most of our squads. But realistically, with Saints playing a broken Villa and Aguero and Costa both facing decent games, it still looks pretty well set for most people on the site to have a good week.

Worst case scenario I'll have 9 players. But when those players include 3 Soton, Aguero (c), Costa, Ivan, Siggy and Sanchez, it could be worse.
