The ScoutCast – Episode 150 – Costly

Granville and I raise out bats to the grandstand as the 150 comes up for the ScoutCast. Fittingly, we choose to spend the milestone episode moaning about Diego Costa, for very different reasons.

Chelsea’s “agro magnet” dominates discussion on the eve of an expected three-match ban that will end my love affair with the grizzled goal-getter. Meanwhile, Granville is left smarting from Costa’s 16-point Gameweek 22 haul as he does his best to make light of the 59-point chasm that now separates our teams.

Elsewhere, we glide through the ScoutCast regulars, whilst taking time out to lament Kevin Mirallas and his latest bout of Baines-bullying that robbed us both of belated returns.

Count the cost via this link, or pay your dues via the handy player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cuadrado is a tricky player. Had him in my World Cup draft game and did well. I hope Mourinho will play him regularly but I fear that won't be the case. Whose spot will he take up?

Hamstring injury is usually not a few days rest injury. 1-2 weeks for grade 1 hammies.

And with the spoiled choice in midfield for Arsenal, surely Arsene won't risk playing Sanchez if he's half fit?

chance creation been poor at Sunderland, but with those fixtures and Defoe being a proven goalscorer in the PL, you'd have to bet on him at that price (and potentially on pen duty)

I'd rather be 1 week late than 4 weeks early on a PL noob. Sure, he's played before but as you say, Sunderland are not attack-masters, plus he's old, he's living out of boxes no doubt, he doesn't have any chemistry built up yet with his team mates, and he's not a penalty taker.
I see him as Jozy Altidore 2.0 ... he has promise, pedigree, ability, but that means nothing.

I honestly don't see where else I would spend the money going forward. Therefore the only advantage I see in my TV is that I can afford to lose value on players like Sanchez and am therefore more flexible.

it's a fair assumption..and if he's out more than just this week then you're potentially gaining a lot of ground on the people that had to bench.

Not assuming. Will certainly wait for whatever news we get before making a decision. But if it were really that minor I don't think we'd even be hearing about it. He took some serious knocks in the Cup. And it was an unnecessary risk bringing him on. So it's no surprise that Wenger isn't throwing himself under the bus.

Lucas and Henderson both should have got additional yellows. Costa should have got a red for something he didn't even get a yellow for. Total rubbish -but probably something he's been told to say.

I'd rather Caz (especially with Spurs fixtures/upcoming blank)

Although with Arsenal having like ten midfielders I'd worry about him long term....

This is such a pain in the Arsenal. Went a week earlier with the winter WC than I wanted to.

Now am sweating over Costa, Fab, Siggy has already gone with my 1FT, Dummett crocked, and somehow I have still got Chester. Got to hang on somehow and hold the other WC for the DGW action.

How are FPL draft leagues run once squads have been picked? Is it all offline with someone keeping track of points scored in FPL?

Also, how does the transfer mechanism work? Presumably first pick is rotated each week amongst all the players.

Any tips/links for running one? I like the idea of only one player being in one team.

I will break down how ours is done...

      1) We have a draft night usually where we meet up and pick 1 player each round to make a squad of 16. No stipulations on how you pick your squad (you can pick 16 goalkeepers if you wished) but you must select a valid team each week. This time we are going to do it over Kakao messenger (we are based in Korea) as people are dotted about doing things this time. Scoring is based on FPL. Players play head 2 head matches in a league. The top 6 go into a knockout stage and the bottom 4 fight it out in a losers play off. If the loser loses the game they go into the final and must pay the overall winner an additional cash prize.

      2) Each week you have 2 free trades. This means you can pick up two players who are not allocated to any other team. You can also do two trades with another team manager which must be accepted by the other league managers. If others feel the trade is unfair in anyway you have the right to veto. This happened to me once when another player offered me Mirallas for Oscar!

It is much more fun than FPL game proper.

Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to write that up.

A few of us are meeting up to go the Villa - Chelsea game next week and I thought it could be a good time over a pint or 2 to do the initial squad draft. Sounds like the game can be run by text or similar after that. Yep, I'll give it a go 🙂

Yeah, although I'm not sure how we are going to do the picking order as we normally pick numbers out of a hat.

I've done Costa > Giroud tonight. Giroud in is a transfer I've been wanting to make but never really had a spot in my front 3 for. If Costa doesn't get a ban then I don't think I'd be making that transfer just yet. 3m to spend next week strengthening elsewhere is the cherry on top.

        Because it's a transfer I should make but isn't a necessity.

    WC is currently ACTIVE:

    Ospina/Foster
    Bertrand Terry PVA Jones Wollscheid
    Puncheon Boyd Hazard Sanchez Downing
    Aguero Giroud Pelle

    2.2 ITB.

Want 1 of either Puncheon/Gayle for definite.

Could upgrade Downing to Oscar in addition to Terry + Hazard but Downing seems pivotal and form despite poor fixtures.

Pelle is the only striker I'm considering changing.

As it stands I have Panti + Foster in goal (WC active but team not yet locked), thoughts on my GK pairing and defensive choices would be appreciated e.g. do I get Ospina/Bellerin/Koscielny, Foster/Wisdom, Panti/PvA, trying to get as much good coverage and not double up in GK/Def's so I can leave my backline alone for the rest of the season (barring injury/not playing etc).

Pretty happy with it but feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

For sure, could fall out of favour but could happily downgrade to Panti if things don't work out. At 4.8 though great value!

Seems a lot of money in defence. Bellerin is cheaper the Ospina so could be a better shout? Both are easy to get rid of though if they get dropped. Personally I'd save a bit of money on defence and possibly upgrade Downing

Definitely, but even with Giroud Kun and Pelle up front money is flowing and not sure if I want to double triple up on Chelsea alongside Arsenal, atm options seem very limited in midfield and defence is the only place where I feel I can be flexible :S

Can't afford having both Chadli and Sanchez out, would you

    a) Chadli -> Walcott
    b) Chadli -> Santi
    c) Keep Chadli and play Boyd / Baird

I'd want Walcott in the future so A effectively will save me a future FT too.
