The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 33 – The Defence

With Gameweek 32 put to bed following Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Newcastle, we’re rolling out the first of our Watchlist articles, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. With double Gameweek 34 around the corner, Thibaut Courtois and Kasper Schmeichel jump up the goalkeeper rankings, while three home matches in the next four see Leighton Baines move into prominence.

GOALKEEPERS

Southampton’s Kelvin Davis retains his spot at the top of our rankings, with the 4.5-priced keeper offering terrific value in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The Saints stalwart has kept shut-outs in both his appearances at St Mary’s since replacing the injured Fraser Forster, and while four of Ronald Koeman’s side next six (sto, TOT, sun, lei, AVL, mci) are on the road, given the south coast club have conceded just 12 goals on their travels this season – the least in the league- Davis looks a strong pick for the rest of the campaign.

Tim Howard leaps up a couple of places by virtue of Everton’s favourable upcoming schedule (BUR, MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT). The four home matches look particularly appealing, given the Toffees have registered shut-outs in four of their last five league encounters at Goodison Park, making the 5.1-rated Howard a viable option between the sticks.

After registering a clean sheet in the 1-0 win at QPR, and with double Gameweek 34 (ars/lei) around the corner, Thibaut Courtois jumps up a couple of places in our latest refresh. The 5.9-valued Belgian will have his work cut out keeping a red-hot United attack quiet on Saturday, given they’ve scored 12 goals in their last four matches. With home matches against Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the next six, though, along with a trip to West Brom, Courtois – the cheapest option amongst Chelsea’s defence – looks worthy of serious consideration.

While Leicester have only managed one clean sheet in their last ten league matches, they have the most favourable fixtures (SWA, bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR) for the rest of the season, according to our Season Ticker. At 4.4 in FPL, Kasper Schmeichel looks a genuine option, then, and could help create funds for premium Chelsea and Liverpool options ahead of double Gameweek 34.

With no fixture in Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet drops slightly in our ladder. A kind schedule thereafter (wba/hul, QPR, che, CPL, sto), including that double in Gameweek 34, make the 5.9-priced Belgian international a real contender for one of our three Liverpool slots, with the Reds having kept clean sheets in three of their last five matches.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski falls a few places in our latest update, with Garry Monk’s side only registering two shut-outs in their last nine league encounters. Neil Taylor’s two-match suspension and Kyle Naughton’s season-ending ankle injury won’t help the 5.4-valued keeper’s prospects of improving on that record, while a tough end to the season (ars, MCI, cpl) suggests there are better options for the season’s climax.

Owners of West Ham defensive assets will have been left seething after Marko Arnautovic’s last-gasp equaliser on Saturday. Nonetheless, a favourable run-in (qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new) following this weekend’s trip to the Etihad means Adrian remains in our thoughts for the upcoming period. Safely ensconced in mid-table, there are concerns over the Hammers’ motivation, given they’ve won just one of their last ten league matches, but for those who own the former Real Betis keeper, using a valuable transfer looks unnecessary.

Joe Hart keeps his place in our latest rankings due to City’s home defensive form. The champions have chalked up a clean sheet in each of the last three in front of their own fans and now have four favourable Etihad encounters (WHM, AVL, QPR, SOT) in the final six. Although the 6.1-rated keeper is an expensive luxury, given City’s struggles away from home, the England No.1 could still be set to benefit from home comforts.

Another keeper falling due to a blank this week is Arsenal’s David Ospina. The Gunners also face leaders Chelsea in Gameweek 34, but with the fixtures then easing up (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA), including that double in Gameweek 37, the 4.9-priced Colombia international could come into the equation for one of our three Arsenal slots.

Tom Heaton returns to our thoughts after a long absence, with Burnley’s fixtures (eve, LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl) for the remainder of the season among the most favourable, according to our Season Ticker. The Clarets have kept impressive clean sheets against City and Tottenham in recent weeks, so the 4.6-valued Heaton offers a decent option for the final few weeks of the season.

DEFENDERS

Another shut-out in the 1-0 win against QPR further reaffirmed Branislav Ivanovic’s spot at the summit of the FPL defender standings. The 7.6-rated Serbian is now the sixth highest scoring player across all positions this season, and with a decent run of fixtures (MUN, ars/lei, CPL, LIV, wba, SUN) until the end of the season, including the double next week, looks primed to add to the impressive 155 points tallied so far this term.

Having averaged 5.1 points per appearance over Southampton’s last six matches since returning from suspension, Ryan Bertrand keeps his place in our latest refresh. The Saints upcoming schedule (sto, TOT, sun, lei, AVL, mci) offers hope of the 5.9-priced defender maintaining that average.

Leighton Baines moves up to third in our rankings, having led all defenders for chances created (nine) over the last four Gameweeks. With Everton more resolute at the back in the last four, only conceding twice, the potential offered by the England international at both ends of the pitch makes him worthy of consideration given the Toffees run-in (BUR, MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT) – that’s if you aren’t deterred by the lofty 7.0 price tag in FPL.

Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp drops a place this time around, but the 4.5-valued defender is still a strong Fantasy prospect given the Foxes favourable fixture list (SWA, bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR). Despite starting at left-back in the last two, he’s ended both matches as a wing-back due a mid-match tactical tweaks and has still chalked up five goal attempts in the last four Gameweeks, joint fourth among defenders. Schlupp has also delivered 15 crosses in the same period, more than the likes of Ivanovic and Bertrand.

While Toby Alderweireld doesn’t offer the attacking potential of his Southampton team-mate Bertrand, coming in at just 4.8 in FPL, the Belgian does offer outstanding value. Part of a Saints rearguard that has kept a league high 15 shut-outs this season, the defender on-loan from Atletico Madrid is definitely one of the best budget defenders available for the remainder of the season.

With West Ham in the midst of a kind run of fixtures (mci, qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new), Aaron Cresswell provided a timely reminder of his attacking potential with a goal in the 1-1 draw against Stoke. With two strikes and four assists in his debut season in the Premier League, the 5.6-rated defender has consistently shown a desire to get forward from his left-back berth and is another who offers potential at either end of the pitch.

Scott Dann keeps his place in our latest update, having led all defenders for goal attempts (eight) over the last six Gameweeks. Palace have only kept one clean sheet in 12 matches since Alan Pardew took over, with a clear emphasis on scoring goals proving detrimental at the back, but the 4.9-priced defender’s ability from set-pieces marks him out as a defender worth considering.

Another defender who offers a threat from set-pieces is Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, who returns to the Watchlist having served a three-match ban. Now down to 5.9 in FPL, the Slovakian should come into our thoughts ahead of double Gameweek 34 (wba/hul), with the Reds having registered clean sheets in their last six away matches with Skrtel in the starting XI. A pretty favourable schedule thereafter (QPR, che, CPL, sto) makes the former Zenit Saint Petersburg defender an enticing prospect for the season’s finale.

With more chances created (19) over the last eight Gameweeks than any other defender, Kieran Trippier sees his stock rise this week. That period incredibly saw Burnley face all of the current top eight, so the easier forthcoming schedule (eve, LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl) should give the 4.8-valued defender a chance of improving further on those impressive stats, and adding to his four assists far.

Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid is a non-mover this time around, with four home matches (SOT, SUN, TOT, LIV), along with trips to Swansea and Burnley in the next six. The Potters have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches and have little to play for, finding themselves sat in mid-table, but coming in at just 4.4 in FPL, Wollscheid looks a solid budget option.

With a trip to Southampton and home clash against City in the next three, Danny Rose jumps back up a few places. The Tottenham rearguard has looked anything but secure in recent months, conceding 15 goals in their last eight league matches as their season stutters to a halt. Rose’s attacking threat, which has seen him produced nine goal attemptsand as many key passes over that period, keeps him in the reckoning.

Having shrugged off a groin problem to keep his place in the starting XI in the 1-0 win against Burnley, Laurent Koscielny returns to the Watchlist. The France international looks the most certain starter among the Arsenal back four, with Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal battling the likes of the fit-again Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs for starting berths. With three goals this season, the 6.0-valued defender could come into our thoughts from Gameweek 35, given the Gunners favourable run-in (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA).

Our ladder is completed by budget defenders Patrick van Aanholt and Craig Dawson. The Sunderland left-back has delivered some impressive stats since compatriot Dick Advocaat took the reigns at the Stadium of Light, registering five shots and creating as many chances in just three outings. The 4.1-valued defender picked up his fifth assist of the season against Palace and could be worth looking at further down the line, bearing in mind that the Black Cats have a double (LEI/ars) in Gameweek 37. Dawson’s stock has fallen, given West Brom have shipped seven goals at home to QPR and Leicester in recent weeks, and their run-in is unfavourable (cpl, LIV, mun, new, CHE, ars). With two goals this season and a strong threat at set-pieces, the 4.5-priced defender may yet bring in the points.

    For the GW 34 WC
    A. Herrera, Alde, Skrtel, Stones
    B. Young, Bertrand, Moreno, Baines
    C. Fellani, Bertrand, Moreno, Stones

The mid will be rotated with Henderson and Vardy
Have Terry and Cameron alongside them in defence

WC teams, what are your plans for GW35?

Save FT? Have a player earmarked to come in? Or taking a hit? Who are the players you want from 35 onwards that aren't in your WC team?

A lot going on in GW35. United have WBA at home, Villa & Leicester start a run of 3 out of 4 home games, 3x Arsenal is a must have from 35 too....

Considering front line of Kun Giroud Benteke. Kane might have to go. Spurs have definitely lost some motivation and steam.

Possibly get Giroud on WC too and play him at home to Chelsea....
With Vardy and Kun though I'm not sure where to go from there to get Benteke in.

Finding it very difficult to plan for GW37 with triple Arsenal attack + Kun.

Kun might have to go in GW37 - swa SOT last 2 games. A straight swap to Austin could be on the cards (NEW, lei)

GW38 has potential relegation battles that could be goal fests : AVL vs BUR & LEI vs QPR

                ARS have WBA at home

So yeah, Kun out at that stage would make for a

                Benteke Austin Giroud?

Correct - Benteke Austin Giroud is what I have in mind as well.

                  GW34 Front 7 of

                  Hendo Sterling Hazard Fabregas
                  Giroud Kun Benteke

                  GW35 - Fab > Ramsey

                  GW36 - Save FT

                  GW37 - Kun + Sterling/Hendo > Austin + Sanchez

But will probably have other problems by then 😆

you prefer FAB over double CHE def and/or Remy...
he does make the Ramsey transfer easier. I was looking at Sterling > Ramsey but doesn't make sense as Sterling has QPR at home in 35

Yea I prefer Fabs in there over Remy or another CHE def (at the moment) as it allows an easy exit path for Arsenal mids.

ie Fab > Ramsey while I keep Hendo/Sterling for GW35 vs QPR as you rightly pointed out 🙂

Done yourself in mate? Im no expert and the cliched answer is 'it depends' 10days to 3months depending on what youve done. Just tweaked it you could probably force yourself to play in a week but like I said Im no doctor and dont know what youve done. you could risk serious injury that way too.

Pending confirmation on Remy's availability; Naughton > Schlupp a worthwhile transfer for this GW? I'll have 11 players to field this GW, should Remy be available. However, with 2FTs I figure it an opportunity to perhaps increase the DGW coverage.

    Schlupp OOP an option?

I reckon he'll revert back to 4-4-2 with Bony / Dzeko partnering Aguero. Although, with Aguero always seems to score better when he plays the lone striker ... it was their defense that was a shambles!

He seems to play 4-2-3-1 in big games. I think he should play it every game, it seems to get the best out of Aguero and Silva (City's two main players). Hopefully for Aguero captainers he continues with it

Pello is a bit of a thick donkey. Top teams have moved away from a pure 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1 (or some variation of a lone striker formation) with a very mobile striker. But for some reason he is convinced a 4-4-2 will work for City while opponents just focus on shackling Yaya with the extra man in midfield and pushing Dzeko/Bony out wide when they can.

          I agree 100%

It's no wonder it generally works well when he does use it (by well, I mean better than a 4-4-2 would), I don't see why he just persists with it and bring on Bony/Dzeko later in the game

      Ozil based on fixtures.

But Hazard all day based on form and Chelsea's reliance on him.

    Kun, Kane, Gomis

    Pants, Wolly, Sanchez, Koscielny

Gomis looks like he will be out - hamstring. Would definitely make the switch to Murray and roll the other FT over.

I'm not sold on Vardy. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. LEI-BUR will probably be a bore fest (especially with Burnley tightening up at the back) and Chelsea is 1-2 points in the bag.

Cue 5-5 thriller and a 1-0 upset vs Chelsea to throw the title into mayhem.

Looking at where my team is at this third striker will probably need to be in my team until GW 36. If i get Sterling and Coutinho next week i won't be able to afford Murray/Vardy to giroud GW35 with one FT.

            So it comes down to

            Murray(WBA, HUL, che)
            Vardy(SWA, bur, CHE, NEW)

            It's pretty tight hey.

Ah tough tough. I would go with the plan that allows Vardy/Murray > Giroud.

Would that mean only one LIV mid for the double?

I will be doing Murray/Vardy regardless.

Basically if I get one Liverpool mid next gw, I can do Murray/Vardy to Giroud for free in GW35. If i get two livp mids I will have to wait till GW36 to get Giroud for freee.

Gotcha. I see now why you're leaning towards Vardy. Vardy + 2 LIV mids definitely make sense for your team now.

Every team has their own tricky dynamics at this point of the season.

Yeah there cant be a standard response really because with the blanks/dgws every team has to be flexible and one suggestion for one team even on just a player A vs player B could be bad advice for another. Interesting time of the season!

In any case, i'd like to get in players from big teams or teams with something to play for.

Vardy definitely fits the bill so why not!

No Naylor and Naughton this GW also leaves SWA abit more exposed on the wings. Rangel loves bombing forward but defensive form has been kak this season.

Murray also a good pick as Palace look motivated to finish the season strong.

                      Coin toss!

Sorry mate had a mind blank. I'd probably just do Gomis -> Vardy, although if you have a WC I'd get Murray instead.

Mane needs to go though, gametime certainly seems an issue with him, I'm benching him in favour of Boyd this week as I don't believe he'll start.

My proposed plan is the following:

Vardy is fine if you want to punt on the DGW. But WBA + HUL at home for Murray isn't too shabby either.

Is next GW a double swoop for those 2 players? I'd get Sterling + Hendo if I were you. template, but Henderson for me is almost a "must-have" considering he's on pens, form, and set pieces.

Just doing some planning ahead for GW37 since it's the DZ 😀

Considering a switch in GW37 of Kun (swa, SOT) > Austin (NEW, lei) to fund Henderson/Sterling > Sanchez. Would find it very difficult to do so otherwise without taking hits.

Does that sound crazy? QPR will probably need to get goals, and a lot of them, in those last 2 games.

            yea wildcarding in GW34.

Pretty set on removing Kane early even if he explodes against Newcastle. He can't carry a team on his own and based on watching the past 2 Spurs games...the motivation's gone.

It would leave me very exposed in my MLs though...and removing Kun in GW37 exposes me even more! but then again, we're almost at the end of the season.

I predict Spurs to really tail off aswell. Kane will still get on the scoresheet but if you have a WC there is no point going ultra safe. Can certainly see why you would go for Kun/Giroud/Tekkers with their form.

These moves could be real make or break becauyse the majority will be sticking with Kun/Kane till the end. I like your thinking and hope it pays off!

Got 2 FTs and pretty stumped..
    Myhill (FOSTER)
    Terry Toby Fonte (Dawson BELLERIN)
    Silva Hazard MANE ERIKSEN (Phillips)
    Aguero Kane Remy
    5.1 in the bank
    2 FTs

Identified these 4 as my problem areas:
Bellerin out: since i want 3 Arsenal attackers for their double
Foster out: cause i cant rely on Myhill.
Eriksen and Mane out: Next week for pool mids cause of obvious reasons. Considering that which of the following makes sense for this week

    A) Foster to Schmeichel (Next week remove the rest for Skrtel/Hendo/Sterling -4)
    B) Bellerin to Schlupp (Next week remove the rest for Migs/Hendo/Sterling -4). Who do i bench if i make this move though?
    C) Foster to Mignolet (Keep Bellerin and swap my mids out for free next week)

Really wish i could carry forward another transfer 🙁

Why'd you have to bench any? I'd bench Schlupp tbh - thought would just be a better use of 1FT and set up a good GW34 team.

        Cheers all.

True Shifty, but it would mean sacrifices elsewhere.

Any chance Giroud's form drops off? Blanked this week, no game this week followed by Chelsea at home. Over the years we've seen him very much as a confidence player, maybe a few blanks in a row will put a stop to his amazing form?

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years

          I'm toying with Kun-Giroud-Benteke up front on GW34 WC through GW38 (maybe Kun>Austin in 37 to allow Hendo/Sterling > Sanchez), but Murray-Kun-Kane in GW33.

The WC does help. Do you still have your WC?

I think Giroud will keep rolling along with returns til the end of the season - he's always done that in past seasons. Fact that he has the extra game makes it even better. If it's between him & Benteke...Giroud any day.

Personally, am planning to drop Kane on WC and pick Giroud back up if that helps.

Yeah Kun, Giroud, benteke seems the best way to go.

            Nup, don't have my WC.

Yeah true. This is my GW34 team if all goes to plan:

            Mignolet
            Bertrand, Clyne, Ivanovic
            Hazard, Silva, Hendo, Siggurdson,
            Kun, Remy, Kane

            Panti | Boyd, Bellerin, PvA

            With 3.9ITB.

Siggy -> Ramsey leaves me with 1.8ITB, which means Remy -> Giroud can be done with 0.1 to spare.

So my planned transfers are very tight. So if I want Kun, Giroud, Benteke then I'll need to downgrade elsewhere, such as in defence (downgrade one of Clyne/Bertrand). We'll see though

            1. Shifty
              • 10 Years

              Tough in your case.

I'd be very very happy with that backline and mid (with Ramsey) + Kun Giroud Kane up front though...given your rank and without a WC to navigate the doubles.

              GW34 team for me

              Davis Myhill
              Ivanovic Moreno Clyne (Toby PVA)
              Hazard Fab Hendo Sterling (4.2)
              Kun Giroud Benteke

              GW35 - Fab > Ramsey
              GW36 - save
              GW37 - Sterling > Ozil, and roll 1 FT for GW38 OR Kun + Sterling > Sanchez + Austin

against Stoke, his poor first touch resulted in a crunching tackle from Wilson and he obviously pu*sied out the rest of his time on the pitch. Looks like he's really struggling with the pace and power of the PL.

Having a fair bit of trouble manoeuvring this team and picking the best option(s) to keep me afloat this gameweek. I have a handy 30 pt lead in my cash league but my closest rival has a fully available roster. Only 1gw transfer and 0.0 in the bank 🙁

I's take a hit and get Murray and Dann in for the next two GW's.

        I think that's a pretty good low risk option. Naughton>Dann, Austin>Murray?

-4 to bring in Dan who you probably won't play after this week isn't a god move IMO.

Austin > Vardy or Murray. Don't think you need to take a hit. Next GW Sanchez > LIV mid, Rose > Ivan/Terry/Skrtel/Moreno (-4) could work.

Vardy is tempting due to the extra game. Naughton out for the season but could risk stowing him away on the bench.

Looking at the week after if I do just Vardy I'd have just enough to get Terry in for Rose/ Naughton in for the Liverpool players without taking a hit. Would it be worth keeping Sanchez for his double gw37?
