Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Silva Back in Training for City

David Silva returns to training for City after scans allay fears over his facial injury. Tottenham’s Kyle Walker is sidelined for another four weeks, Stephen Ireland recovers from a weekend knock for Stoke, whilst Roberto Martinez is confident over the availability of James McCarthy and Leon Osman as Everton prepare to host United.

Silva returns to City training

David Silva returned to training on Tuesday morning after tests revealed that he hadn’t fractured his cheekbone during Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United.

The Scout Says: Manager Manuel Pellegrini will provide a further update on the Spanish playmaker’s health in his Friday press conference, but the signs are very promising that Silva will be available to face Aston Villa on Saturday after being given the all-clear. Regardless, with over 102,000 sales already this week in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Silva has clearly been earmarked as the fall guy in many Fantasy managers’ squads as they attempt to draft in Liverpool’s and Chelsea’s high-priced attacking midfielders ahead of their double Gameweek 34. In light of injury concerns over Daniel Sturridge and the Blues’ strike trio stripping us off any strong forward options this double, the sale of Silva would finance moves for the likes of Raheem Sterling (8.5) and Cesc Fabregas (9.4). Despite the favourable match-up against the Villains on the weekend, Silva’s 23% ownership might be worried that the former Valencia star’s goal threat seems to have dropped off recently- he’s failed to produce a single shot on target in the last two Gameweeks since a move back to 4-4-1-1.

Toffees optimistic on midfield pair

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is confident that both James McCarthy and Leon Osman can shake off their respective knocks in time for a home time against Manchester United this weekend. The Spanish head coach is more cautious on Steven Pienaar’s chances of making the Red Devils clash, implying that it will be touch-and-go for the South African:

“He [McCarthy] has reacted very well. For the first 48 hours after a knock like that it is important to see how the ankle recovers. The treatment has had a positive response so I expect James to join the group later in the week. If he can get through the two or three sessions before the game then that will be a good sign. We need to make sure he is 100 per cent but at the moment the way the ankle has reacted is positive. Knowing James, I do feel that he is going to be available for the squad. Steven Pienaar wasn’t 100 per cent and again we are going to keep a close eye on him. Leon Osman has had a very good session today [Tuesday], so I don’t think he is going to have a problem for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Martinez will be loath to disrupt the momentum of his midfield by altering the personnel, so news of McCarthy’s speedy recovery will be music to his ears. Having switched to a 4-1-4-1 set-up in their last two matches, the Toffees have struck a perfect balance between attack and defence, notching the most goal attempts on any side (33) while conceding the third fewest (10) shots inside the box. Osman’s return to action presents Kevin Mirallas with competition for starts on the left flank, with the latter’s goal on the weekend holding him in good stead as Martinez’ men look to continue their five-match unbeaten against Louis van Gaal’s side. With Goodison encounters against Sunderland and Spurs, allied with trips to Villa and West Ham still to follow, the Toffees look poised to continue their strong form over the final few fixtures.

Walker ruled out for four weeks

Kyle Walker is expected to be sidelined for a further four weeks with a foot injury he sustained during Tottenham Hotspur’s Gameweek 31 fixture against Burnley.

The Scout Says: Walker’s latest prognosis more or less rules him out of the remainder of the campaign, paving the way for a defensive reshuffle for the run-in. Federico Fazio could be set to earn a handful of starts at centre-back as Eric Dier shifts over to right-back, though Mauricio Pochettino also has Vlad Chiriches and January acquisition DeAndre Yedlin as options for their trip to Southampton. As a whole, Spurs’ defence has provided little to cheer about on the Fantasy front this term, with the Lilywhites recording just two cleans sheets in their last 14 outings and a paltry total of seven shut-outs across the entire season – which is less than double that of Saints (15). Danny Rose (5.0) leads the way with his 3.3 points per game average, tallying two goals and three assists in his previous 13 starts. With three away matches (sou, sto, eve) and a trip to Manchester City in Spurs’ final five league ties, few managers will be eyeing up Rose for their three-man rearguards, with owners perhaps looking for a way out after he limped off at Newcastle on Sunday.

Ireland back in training ahead of Saints clash

Stephen Ireland trained on Tuesday after picking up a knock in Stoke City’s 2-1 win over Southampton, while Marc Muniesa will know the results of his hamstring scan at the end of week, according to assistant manager Mark Bowen:

The Scout Says: In the absence of Chelsea loanee Victor Moses, Stoke’s midfielders have stepped up in recent weeks. Charlie Adam has doubled his haul for the campaign in the last three Gameweeks, netting a spectacular 50-yard effort against Chelsea and securing the winner against Southampton last time out after replacing Ireland at the break. Marko Arnautovic, meanwhile, registered in a 1-1 draw at West Ham, whilst Jon Walters has provided two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Showdowns with Sunderland, Swansea and Burnley in the next four offer Mark Hughes’ side the chance to finish the season strongly but the Potters remain very much under the radar due to the upcoming double Gameweeks.

Really need to revamp my team to catch my ml leader (40 points ahead)

    Myhill, McCarthy
    Babes, Ivan, Fonte, Peiters, Naughton
    Hazard, Eriksen, Mane, Silva, Siggy
    Kane, Vardy, Austin

Was thinking McCarthy, Siggy, Ericksen > Mignolet, Hendo, Sterling

Any other suggestions you guys can offer me ? Maybe getting fab in instead of one of my l'pool mids

Bad idea to WC and have 2 Arsenal?

Saves transferring in Giroud and I think Ospina could be a good choice instead of an extra Arsenal mid given the sides they're playing. He's probably less likely to be rotated than Sanchez/Ozil/Ramsey.

    Ospina
    Ivanovic | Skrtel | Morgan
    Hazard | Fabregas | Sterling | Henderson | Cambiasso
    Aguero | Vardy

Myhill Giroud Alderweireld Duff 1.1 in the bank

I'm looking at it the other way around - due to rotation, it's not unlikely one gets 3.x games from any selected two Arsenal mids. Selecting only one mid, one risk only one game. Given their point ceiling is higher than for Opsina, I'm hedging the Arsenal midfield bets.

If you're chasing a 30 point ML lead and your leader will most likely captain Hazard, would you captain someone like Sterling instead? I've played my WC this week so I should have about twice as many DGWers as him, but is that enough?

Anybody know in the top 100 still has wildcards?
Only 2 out of the top 10 have.
My guess is average team values 108 mil is average if the WC used early and 106mil if not.
So, if you have 6 steady scorers in the DGW's to come who play 2 games. How much dosh is left to get more?
On top of this only 1 home game for Liv,Che and Ars in GW34 and 37.
Top this off by possible rotations, where is the real gain of having more than 6 DG weekers?

    1. SPorting
      • 12 Years

I'm guessing that most WC's will contain 8 or 9 of the same players for DGW34 (with 2x ARS on the bench) with an eye on the last few GW's including the DGW37.

      1. Eze Really?

        I agree, but which ones?
Let us say it is 9. (I have 7) they will only have 7 premium picks. So an average potential gain can be around 10 points.
        Follow my meaning?

2 out of the top 10 do, and 20.4% of the Top 100, according to FPL Discovery. I'd be pretty confident in my estimation that about 20 in the Top 100 still have it.

I'd also estimate that each DGWer over 6 is worth an extra 2 to 3 points each.

There will be some great DGWers, and some not so great - that's normal. I think the main advantage of getting 8 or 9 is that you increase your chances of getting the ones that will score big. But you're right - someone who picks, say, 5 DGWers and still gets the ones that score big will only be a handful of points behind.

Good morning lads. UCL fantasy question. Switch captain to Ronaldo,Ramos or Juve defender/Buffon?

Juve defense -> CS a high probability but nothing more so the max is around 12-14 points.
Ramos-> CS a possibility and best case scenario would be a goal as well.
Cr7: The most explosive option. Can get 2 goals or more if on a good day but the way Atletico park the bus, a 2 pointer is also very possible. Go safe or gamble?

Captaining Ronaldo can never be considered a gamble. If anything it is the Zenith of Dullard

You have to consider his record against Atletico this season and RM's against Atletico in general no? They have been able to frustrate him for the last 6 meetings I believe. I can't see Madrid scoring many.

    B. Moreno and Wolly

Until the end of the season. McShane would only start this week and possibly GW 36 at home to Burnley.

So I'm on my WC and pretty much mapped out my main team. Trying to plug a couple of poor fixtures between now and the end of the season.

So my question is, should I pick bench players for specific gameweeks down the line e.g. McShane for GW36, or players who have better general fixtures but not so good on the weeks I may need them e.g. Duff. Another example would be Pantilimon vs Davies for GW37.

    Cheers.

Best laid plans turn sour often. Go with the general fixtures, never know when you'll need to count on on them.

    Last 2 matches

    Least attempts in box conceded
    Arsenal
    Leicester

    Least attempts in box attempted
    Chelsea

    Least attempts on target
    Chelsea

Clearly oppo plays a huge factor in such a tiny sample size - but that's the best underlying stat for immediate form of defence vs attack.

Watching Chelsea's last couple of games they're playing very nervous... 'With the handbrake on'

Even if Arsenal and Leicester don't get results vs Chelsea (I think they might) - I really don't see CFC suddenly turning on the style.

Very surprised Hazard is such a run away in the poll.

For me this looks like a week where the received wisdom of the poll will disappoint - as it has time and again this year. One of those fuelled by fear of what might be - where in reality Hazard just isn't a 'huge haul' player, and Chelsea just aren't a big-scoring team. Esp. at this time of year.

How many times have Hazard and Costa disappointed this year?

Great opportunity for those looking to gain ground or climb OR by going for an e.g Sterling, Coutinho Ivanovic etc.

The problem is that if Hazard scores he get 1 cleansheet point and 3 bonus on top of the 5 points. That is 11 points right there.

Hazard though, has been involved in over 60% of goals for Chelsea in the last 6-8 Gameweeks (maybe more) and the team looks to be built around him now that Costa's been irregular in the team, also Chelsea have only blanked once all season, so even if they get 2 goals in the DGW, Hazard's involvement in the goals really do make him the runaway captain this week.

Also for Sterling and Coutinho, Liverpool have only scored 7 goals in their last 6 away games since January, and they seem to be a lottery between Sterling, Coutinho and Henderson.

While Hazard's last 5 of his 7 goals have come away from home..

I like the stats but Leicester werde playing Swansea and WBA whereas Chelsea lead the longest part of the games vs ManU who started to attack and Chelsea intelligently sat back.
If they don't concede to Arsenal the will play similar but A) i hope they will and B) they wont play that way vs Leicester

The thing with Hazard is that if he scores, they usually win and given that they don't tend to score to many, he is most likely to be in the bonus points.

Also as it seems that Mourinho is reverting to the "park the bus " tactics, if they do score it's most likely him involved and a cs point on top of that.

All of these responses - sensible as they are - leave you hoping for Hazard winning goals in tight games.

I'd much rather be hoping for big end-of-season frustration-venting thrashings from Liverpool than tight 1-goal margin wins from Chelsea.

        Sterling(c) for me!

One goal and a clean sheet means Hazard gets 11pts as he's a baps magnet. Chelsea can win both games 1-0 and Hazard can still clean up.

It's not out of the realms that they lose / draw one of them.

I'll always rather back an attacking unit than a defensively minded one in fantasy.

On the other hand I've doubled CFC defence so if they do get double cleansheets I feel like I've made my hay there.

If you catch the right player, there will undoubtedly always be one that scores more than your current player on the day but I feel that people are less reluctant to sell and feel prone to make hits before wildcards as if there were goalprophets and assistmachines coming for a special event. The reality is that two of four (Henderson fabregas sterling coutinho) will likely blank and get 4points and half of the people here will be amazed and in shambles.
Over the next rounds Silva has more to play for than Chelsea(who will be over the line in 3) and pool (who wont have a Chance in 3weeks anymore) and has good fixtures. No doubt there will be 442 games and 4411 games a like and Silva will be floating around as he does anyway.
