Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 1 – The Weak

Having analysed the sides with the most favourable opening to the new season, we now turn our attention to the teams who face a treacherous path over their initial four-to-six Gameweeks.

Newcastle’s new head coach Steve McLaren has been handed an unwanted baptism of fire back in the top flight, while West Brom and Everton also look to have been handed starts that looks set to curb any initial Fantasy investment in their squads.

NEWCASTLE

frisking

After a catastrophic second half of the 2014/15 campaign, the fixture list appears to have handed the Magpies little respite.

An opening day home clash with Southampton is followed by trips to Swansea and Manchester United, with Arsenal visiting St James’ Park in Gameweek 4. While there should be some new faces in the squad by the time the upcoming campaign kicks-off on August 8, it’s very unlikely that we’ll be looking to invest in their Fantasy assets given the degree of difficulty of their opening four fixtures.

This will at least give Fantasy managers the opportunity to observe how the Magpies will set up under McLaren, and get insight into his first choice XI.

Should Tim Krul be priced at 4.5 as he was last season, he looks a viable option as a rotational keeper, although with Bournemouth and Norwich facing easier starts, there could be better alternatives out there. Daryl Janmaat will likely be the prime defensive target once the season is underway. He registered eight assists last term and offers the potential of attacking returns. The potential lack of defensive points during the opening month looks likely to delay any interest, however.

Further forward, Papiss Cisse scored 11 goals last season, despite missing chunks of the season due to injury and suspension. However, with the fixtures and new squad additions in attack expected, Cisse, along with promising starlet Ayoze Perez, will be way down on our pre-season pecking order.

WEST BROM

frisking

With home clashes against last season’s top two, in addition to the visit of Southampton in the opening five Gameweeks, many may choose to initially avoid Tony Pulis’ side in the quest for mid-price options. Nevertheless, the Baggies could provide us with stronger potential on the road: they managed shut-outs in four of their nine away matches under Pulis’ guidance and with trips to Watford, Stoke and Aston Villa on the agenda, further clean sheets could be in the offing.

Given their form under the former Stoke boss, few, if any of the West Brom first choice defence are set to be priced under 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Combined with the tough Hawthorns schedule, that could temper early interest in their defensive ranks.

Ben Foster is expected to be out until October, so the valuation of back-up goalkeeper Boaz Myhill could hand us a cheaper route into the Baggies backline, though reports linking Crystal Palace understudy Wayne Hennessey with a move to the Hawthorns need to be monitored.

In attack, investment in Saido Berahino appears unlikely given that a price hike from his starting value of 5.5 last season is expected, while the current midfield potential also looks sparse. Chris Brunt’s appeal is likely to remain diminished – the Irishman seems poised to continue as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, despite being fielded as a left-back on several occasions by Pulis last time out.

EVERTON

frisking

The Toffees are poised for a horrendous opening run of matches which, given Everton’s patchy for under Roberto Martinez in 2015, is likely to see Fantasy managers steer clear until the schedule lifts around Gameweek 11.

After opening the season at home to Watford, Everton then face all of last season’s top eight and a trip to West Brom in the next nine fixtures, suggesting few Fantasy managers will be sniffing around Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku from the offset.

There was a distinct lack of consistency among Everton’s midfielders last season, so the luxury of taking a “watching brief” over the opening month of the campaign could be a handy luxury. Ross Barkley and new signing Tom Cleverley may offer potential, while Kevin Mirallas, should he stay at Goodison Park, could yet provide a viable option in the mid-price category.

BE WARY OF…

Crystal Palace
Following his return from the African Cup of Nations, Yannick Bolasie was played a part in ten of Palace’s 21 goals, so the DR Congo international is a name on the radar of many a Fantasy manager heading into the new season. Favourable clashes at Norwich and at home to Aston Villa in the first three Gameweeks offer hope he can maintain that form, but a swift exit strategy may be required given that Alan Pardew’s men then face away trips to Chelsea and Tottenham, sandwiching a home encounter against Manchester City, while a home fixture against Arsenal is also less than favourable. The Eagles kept just two clean sheets following Pardew’s arrival at Selhurst Park, so aside from Scott Dann’s clear threat from set-pieces, we’re not expecting much from the Palace backline.

Chelsea
While it is difficult not to envisage Jose Mourinho’s side getting off to a strong start, there is little doubt they face the toughest opening schedule amongst the expected title contenders. Certainly, an opening day fixture at home to Swansea looks promising, given they scored nine goals against Garry Monk’s men last season, while trips to the Etihad and the Hawthorns may well prove profitable for Chelsea’s defence. Mourinho is often content to take a point from away matches against his rivals, whilst the Baggies may be happy to sit deep in a similar fashion when the champions pay visit. With a home clash against Arsenal on their agenda over the first six, the Blues’ schedule is rated second worst overall in our ticker and some may subsequently be hesitant at starting the season with a full set of Chelsea charges.

Watford
The Hornets first three home clashes on their return to the Premier League sees them face a trio of strong travelling defences, as West Brom, Southampton and Swansea all pay visit. Watford will also make trips to Everton and City in the opening six Gameweeks, so goals could be hard to come by early on for the likes of Troy Deeney. At the other end it’s likely that most, if not all, of Watford’s backline will be available for 4.5 in the FPL, providing some decent rotation options, though fellow new boys Bournemouth and Norwich have far more inviting opening fixtures and will likely provide stronger alternatives.

Liverpool
With the Reds defensive starters likely to come in between 5.5 and 6.0 in the FPL, the difficulty of their away fixtures will deter many from considering the Liverpool rearguard. Trips to Stoke, Arsenal and United in the opening six Gameweeks look unlikely to yield clean sheets, given they conceded 13 goals across the corresponding matches last season, so while the home clashes against Bournemouth, West Ham and Norwich are very favourable, the likes of Martin Skrtel or Simon Mignolet could be overlooked by many. The prospects in midfield are slightly rosier, with Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho battling for our attention, whilst James Milner could also come into the reckoning, depending on his starting price. We’ll be looking for some clarity in attack over pre-season, though, with the arrival of Danny Ings and Divock Origi adding to Brendan Rodgers’ options in the final third.

I thought Stekelenberg was dreadful with Fulham

Personally, I'll be avoiding Southampton defence as long as he's in goal

Popular opinion around here seems to be that some key players will be missing at the start of the season, I had a quick look at what happened post-Copa America last time around (2011).
Not going to draw too many conclusions as clearly there are a lot of factors involved, but a few thoughts for those already planning their GW1 squads without Aguero / Sanchez and others:

    - This year's Copa America started earlier in the Summer than the 2011 edition, so despite the early PL start this coming season, players will actually have a bit longer to prepare this time than last.

    - The big two from the PL involved last time around were Aguero and Suarez. Both went on to appear (and score) GW1. Between getting knocked out of the Copa America and starting the PL season, Aguero had 30 days to recover, having played a full 2010-11 season.
Suarez won the tournament with Uruguay and still featured 17 days later for Liverpool, though a 7 match ban the previous season meant he would've been fresher. This time around there are 35 days between the Copa America final and GW1.

    - The number of PL players involved was far lower in 2011 - Other notables who featured heavily were Lucas and Ramires. Both started GW1 27days after the tournament. Antonio Valencia featured for Ecuador but missed the start of the season through injury.

In summary, all PL players involved in the last Copa America featured GW1 the following season, aside from the injured Valencia. And this time around they'll have slightly longer to recover - Even those reaching the final.

And just FYI: Only just realized that next year is the centenary of the Copa America so they're doing it again. Not sure whether that will be in the minds of the managers - Not all (looking at you Pellegrini) will be planning that far ahead, I'd imagine.

This time around it's 35 days. So even after reaching the final and a fortnight on the beach there would still be nearly three weeks until GW1. I'll be planning for Sanchez and Aguero et al being around, unless I get strong indications otherwise.

The players in the Copa will need a break, especially as little break last season due to World Cup. Kun surely will be rested for a game or so. Good chance to try out Bony and Silva should make hay.

CA ends 4th July, so Kun, for example, will have 17 days for rest until Australian tour. Let's say they won't force him a lot in pre-season, stll think he will be ready for GW 1.

I think having a World Cup the season before is a key factor to. Some players have had very little downtime in the last 2 years. Saying that, I don't think there will be too much resting at the start of the season. There will be leave given before meeting up for pre season but come gw1 I think everyone will be gtg

The WC factor was the same for the 2011 tournament.

Still considering giving Aguero a miss the first couple of weeks regardless, with less than great fixtures. Though I feel nervous even writing that.

I have an awful memory and can't remember when FFS usually post their pre-season articles, but people keep posting how they're really early and I can't remembering this happening in previous seasons. But, do you think Mark's been told when FPL is targeting to re-opening and that's why they're being published early?

        totally IMO

I think Schmeichel will be 5.0

Not sold on the fixtures either tbh, if I got LEI defence it would be part of my rotation

Panti, Myhill or Ruddy for me. Panti the most likely. Last season Panti and Mannone combined were the highest scoring keeper and had the most saves

I may go Fuchs over PvA, but you're looking at it wrong

You may be playing Panti every week, but you only be doubling in games where you have a better chance of a CS

There's no right or wrong way, I'm just set on one keeper every week and happen to think that Panti will be the highest scoring keeper.

I have Guidetti which kind of negates getting Sa, especially as I paid £6.5m for Ter Stegen.

    BREAKING:

Claims from Cadena SER in Spain that Manchester City FC are closer than Manchester United to signing Valencia CF defender Nicolás Otamendi (27) for £35m.
If this is true, then the £22.2m fee owed for Negredo could be used to pay much of it.

Last informations are also that fee has been dealed and it will be all over in next few days.

What a fantastic signing that would be, one of the best CBs in the world. Now left back (Bertrand), Song, Pogba/Wilshare, Sterling and Reus/Griezmann/KDB.

Something that I've been working on in the off season, is a Clean Sheet Season Ticker based on statistics from last season.

The common failing with the season tickers I have seen (and created in the past), are a strength rating based on goals scored (GF) and goals against (GA). This can favour teams that regularly concede the odd goal, over those that kept more clean sheets but were inconsistent. For instance, an interesting stat from last season is that Liverpool kept 8 clean sheets away from home, where as Chelsea kept just the 6.

The final piece in the puzzle is to recognise the attacking strength of the opposition. I have incorporated this weighting by considered the number of times teams scored 1 or more goals, for both home and away. So while a team like Chelsea kept a clean sheet in 58% of home games, against Man City they're only 14% as likely due to City scoring in 18/19 away games. This also enables two seemingly similar defences - based on total goals conceded - to be much more accurately compared.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q0ZG_L-CnOckDQlE6bMe6NfeypJgS7toITtiSt1yiYg/edit?usp=sharing

While the aim of this season ticker is to be 100% non-subjective, I have needed to complete artificial statistics for the promoted teams.

I'd also add that for the season ahead, there are new signings, new managers and even new referees... of course, subjectivity is required to tweak last season's statistics for this season. Everyone has their own opinion on which teams will do better/worse and this will be key to developing your cheap defender rotations.

    Beyond the Mane/Main Man.

Mané remains the standout candidate from Southampton for many on FFS. While many expect the pressures of the EL and the imminent price hikes to make Southampton's defence a 'no-go', Mané is appearing in drafts, here there and everywhere. But if you're looking for someone other than Mané from Southampton's midfield and forwards, or don't have the cash, where do you start? I've selected three to watch.

Jay Rodriguez will return for pre-season after a season out with injury. He has signed a new long-term contract with Saints and is expected to be a major part of Koeman's plans. During the 2014 exodus, it was Schneiderlin and J-Rod that were kept, despite interest from Spurs, and it is understood that Koeman is very excited about the future of the once-capped England international. He offers a very different option to the current available strike force and is said to be stronger and faster than ever before. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32834063

In 2013/14, Rodriguez managed 15 goals in 33 appearances, often playing on the wings. He's very used to playing off a big frontman in Rickie Lambert, should Koeman persist with Pelle as his main striker. Doubts remained about J-Rod's ability to lead the line on his own - perhaps a strengthened J-Rod can. If not, the rumours about Charlie Austin may come to something and, while many would be keen to recruit Austin to their FPL squads, it may well enhance J-Rod's prospects, rather than detract from them. Austin and Rodriguez have already proven they can link up together - in the 2011/12 season for Burnley in the Championship, where both were only 22 years old at the conclusion of the season, Rodriguez managed 21 goals in 41 appearances (36 starts), while Austin made his breakthrough with 17 goals in 46 appearances (30 starts). Following that season, Rodriguez made his move to the south coast.

    James Ward-Prowse
James Ward-Prowse, JWP, has often been a popular budget pick but has frustrated due to a lack of starts and a long-term injury in the autumn hampered his development. At this moment in time, if I said anything about the promise of starts, I'd only be second-guessing Koeman. However, Ward-Prowse clearly is developing a reputation for himself, frequently captaining the U21s who are in the midst of international competition. He signed a new long-term contract in January and is said to be very happy at Southampton where he is getting opportunities. His set pieces remain the best in the squad - often offering lethal corners and free kicks, though he is yet to really add goals to his game.

The great merit of JWP's game may serve to help alleviate this problem. In April's 2-0 win over Hull, JWP scored a penalty and his first league goal for Southampton (following on from an amazing pre-season effort). In the interview after the game, Koeman said that Schneiderlin and Ward-Prowse were his main penalty takers - if they were on the pitch, they would be taking them. http://goo.gl/1jNWTX You might assume, deferring to seniority, Schneiderlin would be the preferred taker, but he played 90 minutes in that game and it was JWP that stepped up. If JWP can find starts, penalties are a great addition to his FPL game. Koeman's pre-season games and Southampton's early EL games may provide a good insight for FPL managers. If he is prominent in those games and a good price on FPL, I'll be strongly considering him.

    Dusan Tadic
The hype around Mané has tended to obscure others that showed promise last season. Dusan Tadic could be worth considering if notably cheaper. I did wonder why he'd faded away quite so badly in the second half of 2014/15 but he apparently had recurrent groin problems from December onwards and was rarely in peak physical condition. And indeed, if you go googling, evidence of these injuries crop up all over the place, including in an interview in March with Koeman. http://goo.gl/zXsnLv Ultimately, Tadic's season finished early because of concerns about him being fit for 2015/16.

In that same interview, Koeman described Tadic's problems not only with that injury but with adapting to the PL. He highlighted that Tadic needed to adapt his game by shooting more. At the beginning of last season, we saw Koeman impress this same desire on Wanyama and Schneiderlin, following a press interview, and both scored early season goals. It may be that, during pre-season, we see evidence of this change of emphasis in Tadic's game so that goals are added to his traditionally assist-heavy game. Pre-season will be an opportunity to assess both Tadic's fitness and to see if he shows more goal intent.

Tadic was so hot and cold last season. JWP could be an option if he nails down a spot though I'm not convinced he'll be a regular enough points scorer

      Great post as always though

It's very much a situation to monitor. I wouldn't be diving in with anyone yet. Just trying to diversify things a bit.

        Pricing could be important here

Tadic may well stay static at 7.5 whilst Mane could go to 8 or 8.5

I did point out the importance of pricing in the Tadic vs Mané decision. Clearly Mané wins if they are similar prices.

      Interesting
Jrod-particularly interesting-quality act who will be well priced-strong words tonight that SOT are not looking for a forward reinforce Ronko's strong approval
Jwp-not convinced-poor scoring record, must have been on a good holiday-his recent friendly form has been taken into the U21s
Tadic-people forget how strong tadic was when he arrived-after

Could Pelle and J-Rod forge a partnership?

While Feyenoord's Lex Immers and James Rodriguez aren't comparable, they perhaps give an insight to Graziano Pelle's potential. As Pelle blossomed at Feyenoord, finding the net over 50 times in two seasons, Lex Immers also impressed. A similar height to J-Rod, though an attacking midfielder of the number 10 kind, rather than 'inside forward', the relationship between Immers, who most deem of a lower standard than the likes of Rodriguez, and Pelle saw Immers muster 12 goals in Pelle's second season. Many online describe Immers as sitting behind Pelle and feeding from his play, often resulting in shots inside the box or spreading play to more conventional wide men for crosses. This would appear to have made the most of the admirable link-up play that Pelle has exhibited in his first season in the PL.

This partnership reflects great likenesses, despite the nuances in the players' differing styles, with Lambert and J-Rod, exchanging passes and again exploiting the forward man's link up play. The issue is whether Pelle can adapt to having someone coming into the wings around him, rather than sitting behind him. If he can, it could be profitable for both forwards, who are both able in the air. A player like Tadic on the other wing, may indeed find joy in two eager frontmen, as J-Rod cuts into the box from wide positions.

I'd reckon so. Unless of course J-Rod turns heads in pre-season. My problem is that most of our pre-season is abroad so I may struggle to watch games. If J-Rod was definitely as good as 2013/14 J-Rod, I'd probably favour him over Mané.

I think 6.5m is the most I'd pay for him tbh, unless he was given a berth up front more often, or be a goal scoring mid (like Mane) then I don't think he's worth more than 7.0m IMO.

Great to see some of you high flying in the u21s.

I made the foolish mistake of going way to the Lakes and having no internet access to sort my team out so I'm playing my WC to have a go at a high scoring week

Who should I be looking at getting in?
