The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Stoke City

Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Would u start with some their striker? Nice fixtures. Okazaki could be fantastic punt.

Not sure, Ulloa started well last year and I think he finished the season strongly. Worth looking at preseason stats.

    Courtois at 5.5 tempting anyone?

Had Ivanovic in my draft but that saving on Courtois comes in handy.

      about 24% of players.

Will Azpi massively outscore him? Will the keepers at 5 and 4.5 score similarly to Courtois? These are the questions

      1. Phillips
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

I'd either go Ivanovic or Courtois, no middle ground 🙂 But yeah I think that 4.5 keepers could maybe run him close with the BPS changes.

Courtois and Kos looks so much better than Ivanovic and Ruddy though.

Personally think Azpilicueta is the nailed Chelsea value, they need to go buy a left back at the minute he's a certain pick.

I'm hoping Austin signs for someone before the season starts, I guess he'd be 8m or so, so I could bring him in and upgrade a defender.

Although I have put decent thought into the rotations etc

RMT - please made a few edits and any help is greatly appreciated. Not sure Courtois is the right way to go but allows me to get in Kos. Thanks a mil all.

    Courtois // Hennessy

Good balance, Schneiderlin isn't a wise pick, he'll play too deep to do anything FPL wise.

Personally I worry about Walcott when Sanchez comes back, but I'm in the minority there.

    Courtois (Hennessey)

I see Pedro taking Mata's spot away. LVG brought in Depay not Mata. Depay was given the no.9 jersey and is much more of a presence than Mata. Mata is like Ozil and wants to be silky and smooth but LVG wants presence and robustness. I'm personally going with Depay and Rooney. Did you see Mata miss an open net yesterday when Rooney was wide open?

I done up a spreadsheet of corresponding results and total player points from last season's corresponding fixtures. I know points accumulation will differ, it was just to give me an idea of who performed well against said teams. I also put in opposite result in right hand side of brackets to see patteren against these teams if any.

Anyone know of any Telegraph Leagues that are open to shabbily dressed members of the public?

Just wondering thoughts on Wijnaldum, is he a nail on starter who'll score and assist or are there better alternatives
    Advice would be greatly appreciated

From my point of view is that he will make things tick in Newcastle's team and improve them overall. However, from an FPL point of view, one might believe that there are better choices.

Unlikely, behind Januzaj in the que, and I doubt he'll play much.

ADM could change this slightly though.

Anyone get tickets for Euro 2016?! Managed to be allocated 4 tickets in a Last 16 round match at the new Lille Métropole stadium! Get in!!

      Nope. Well done!

Put in a huge potential outlay and all for 2 tickets to 2 matches by came up empty 🙁

Ahhh well unlucky. I know someone at work who applied for something like 10 games along with all his 5-a-side mates applying too. They've ended up with around 24 tickets which is just ridiculous when other people miss out.

Hopefully you can pick some up when more tickets go on sale, plus returns.

Yep, 4 tickets for a last group game and 4 tickets for a QF. Both at Bordeaux, about an hours drive from my in-laws holiday home 🙂

Result! I applied for 2 matches both in Lille, one during the group stages and this one so definitely got a bit lucky to get the better game (on paper). Can't wait!

Nice one! Not sure yet whether I'm going to go with 3 mates or take the missus and our 2 kids. Just realised it's our anniversary on the same day lol.

As you debate the players in your squad, what are your attacking price points so far? Just tinkering with an Aguero and Hazard -less draft no came up with

I like William but his value is suspect in FPL terms. I'm not sure about Vardy though. I think Sakho at .5m more will comfortably outscore him if you can find the funds?

Does this line up look a bit too risky?

    Pants / Butland
    Azpi / Alderweild / Morgan / Francis / Targett
    Ozil / Hazard / Depay / Hazard / Bentaleb
    Benteke / Rooney / Wilson

I am just unsure on the Depay situation...

Don't think you need Depay when you've got Rooney. I'd get Mane and upgrade Targett,

    Mignolet - (Hammer)

    Mertesacker - Ivanovic - Fransic - (Pudil) - (Martin)

    Hazard - Henderson - Silva - Walcott - (Wanyama)

    Kane - Benteke - Deeney

    Any thoughts?
