Scout Report – Jordan Ayew

Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

For 13 m I should be buying an explosive hot form Aguero threatening to score every few minutes. Not a hardly training player recovering from Copa exploits.

Fear of missing an unpredictable early haul should not be the reason to weaken a team to buy a player 2m pricier than everyone else.

Plus I feel people think if Aguero comes on against West Brom and scores twice (unlikely) then that means that the players that they could have instead (Hazard, Rooney, Costa etc.) are all going to score 2 points

So what if Aguero can score in a sub appearance? Rooney can score a hattrick against Spurs and if Aguero does score in a 10 minute cameo...Rooney can still score a hattrick

People are letting fear make them make illogical decisons

Vardy could be a nice move, but new mangers do add an element of uncertainty to selection policy. I haven't studied Leicester's pre-season in any depth, does it looks like Vardy will start for Ranieri?

Tricky one. I'm not sold on Chadli (though I know he's popular in these parts), but I like Kane and Rooney. If Mata is nailed it's not unreasonable to expect that he should deliver in line with his price and maybe more.

    Hello all!

Been tinkering quietly for a while now and I have ended up with a team that looks like this

I've been messing about with my midfield and forwards, but I think my defense is locked in now. Any suggestions for my MF and F line?

Current plan is to save up 2 FTs and do something like:

    Lukaku/Pelle+ lowest return MF > Kun + 5.5 standout

Doubling up on Man Utd attack, risky or sensible?

If not Man Utd, which team should I double up on for attackers?

    Appreciate the time lads!

I have a similar structure. I was hoping to do
      9.0 mid & Costa -> 7.0 mid & Aguero
But now I'm unsure whether Costa is reliable.
Your plan is a good one.
I would not double up on United, though. Have you considered Giroud and Mane instead of Pelle & Depay?

      1. IanC
        • 13 Years

I was actually swapping between these but settled on Depay and Pelle because I see Pelle getting most of the goals for SOU and Depay has been quite active in his roll so far in Pre Season matches.

        Courtious, Schmeichel
Koscielny, Prodl, Huth, Matthews, Cameron (or any 4.5 defenders ).
        Hazard, Milner, Ozil, Ritchie, Fletcher.
        Rooney, Aguero, Hooper. +0.5itb.
        Any suggestions?

huge investment in defence imo, double chelsea can be achieved with Courtois in goal and 1 of Ivan or Azpi. Then you can use the saving to upgrade elswhere.

Too much spent in defence. Not sure about having two players from the same team in the back line too, as one goal against automatically loses clean sheet bonuses for two players. Kosc worries me too with all his injuries.

So my midfield at them moment is

    Hazard,cesc,walcott,ritchie

I am considering getting rid of cesc but i cant really find an option im very confortable with

Liverpool have awful first 5 so no hendo/milner for me

I have Pelle so no point in having Mane too, same with Rooney and Depay

Also no Silva/Sterling as the schedule till gw4 isnt very good

I think Mane is a no brainer in comparison to Pelle, Rooney is the only option from man U, and I think you should have one of Sterling/Silva from the start

And Chadli could be a good option but I dont have him

But I like Ritchie and have no qualms about Hazard + Fab other than I think Costa+Chelsea defender necessary

      1. Nicks93
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

The thing is with Mane is that koeman has way too many options on the flanks that he might be rotated with the EL qualifier rounds while pelle is pretty much the only out and out striker. As for silva, i think he is waaaaay too pricey at 10.0 would much rather pay 1 mil more for sanchez. Already have azpi too and I dont think costa is very reliable FPL wise

      1) with you planning to WC gw5 why have milner? He has 3 awful away games in the first 5

      2) Why the unnecessary punt on Wilson? Seems like a wasted transfer if you already decided you want sakho gw2, i would just go with sakjo now and take gw1 to the chin. It also puts you in a very difficult decision if wilson score vs villa, will you still get him out for sakho?

besides Rooney not much standing out, and Rooney not exactly setting the world on fire in pre season, but he's a proven performer and is going to be playing striker so the goals and FPL points will come.

      Any defenders tickle your fancy?

Darmien's attacking threat was piquing my interest in the first half, but I tend to favour clean sheets above attacking threat and in that respect the United defence worried me tonight.

hmmm thanks for the analysis (you obviously watched the game). I think you need a balance between attacking threat v Clean sheets. How did Shaw go?

To be honest I watched most of the first half then got bored and started chatting more to you good folks on here, with the game on in the background. (It seems so wrong to say that about a football club that used to boast players like Giggs, Kanchelskis, and Cantona - but maybe I'm just showing my age). Shaw didn't stand out for me, good or bad, from what I did see. United didn't look great with Blind in central defence though so what happens to him if Rojo, Smalling or another specialist centre back takes over might worry me a little if I owned Shaw.

He has had to do far too many last minute tackles and clearances for my liking. Blind needs replacing. Smalling is much better even if he is right footed (LVG has that weird thing about needing a left footed LCB)

Ideally exactly that, Rooney to become Aguero while likely downgrading Wally to a 7.0

    Working on defence:

    Kosc / Shaw
    Ward / Richards / Kaboul - rotation

    Opinions?

The keepers aren't a pure rotation until--is it gw4 If you want a promoted keeper I double-downed and went BOU/WAT, no top 4 until gw9.

I think you have the best of the 3 team rotations.

I only saw the 1st half of MU/PSG, but Darmian an Shaw

Kosc>Mert could also let you have a 4.5/5.0 keeper rotation. Good luck you could def run that as is.

      1/2
      1/3
      1/3 (Too punty)
      2/2 = 5/10

Your defence is OK, but, imo, will leak occasional points constantly, on account of not hoovering up sufficient baps.

The defensive difference is interesting in a good way, but how do you feel about Swansea's early fixtures? I'm not convinced Ozil is the best Arsenal pick for 8.5m - that area is a bit of a lottery though.

I quite like Swansea's early fixtures. Obviously Williams will be benched against United and Chelsea, but their other opponents will struggle to get the ball from Swansea and their possession style.

Wrt to Ozil...it's between him and Cazorla. Just fancy Ozil due to his assured role in the starting 11 will benefit from Walcott's presence and even when Sanchez is back, he owns that central role.

Falcao doesn't really appeal as a 2nd striker at his price though. Sakho as in defender Sakho? Not keen on liverpool's away games...but for 5.0 could be worth a shout in a rotation.

Walcott is my Aguero bank. Currently intending to shift Rooney for Aguero by GW4. Rooney has great first 3 fixtures (he's got a good record against those opponents too) and then things get a bit tricky from GW4 onwards...United play teams they usually struggle against (Swansea, Liverpool, Sunderland, Everton) while Kane's fixtures get better.

These aren't necessarily players i'm looking at for my team, rather players who cost the same.

Ki - he's always been on my radar since arriving from Celtic. He's a decent 4th mid who is heavily involved in Swansea's attack. Currently have my 4th mid as Mane or Payet (depends which way you look at it) so if i need extra money i'll consider Ki.

              Blimey! That's nice!

I have been looking at Payet ... obviously ... but the expense worries me a bit ...

Payet is a calculated risk. With the Hammers set to play more attacking football under the new gaffer I can see his underlying stats from Ligue 1 (which are mind boggingly good) giving him the chance to hit the ground running in the PL

                FYI mids are: Hazard - Wally - Mane - Payet - 4.5

yeah 7.5 is a tad much for me. I would have him at 7. At the price i will monitor and look to jump on when i see some form.

And yes I'd pick Chadli before any other 7 mil player, then likely Tadic. (hope no Milner or Hendo backers read this, could be trouble)

            Doos.. Agree about Chadli.
Regarding Ki.. the members article on Swansea highlighted his creativity and goal threat(or lack thereof) .. Not really impressed by him. Care to sell me to him? Would rather find 0.5 and get Puncheon instead atm tbh

😆 Well, I have been looking at him for a while - the previous Season he kept getting points when I expected them from Sigurdsson, which was annoying, so I watched him more. He is technically very gifted, so I am pretty confident. Moreover, he is both disciplined and positionally very sound, imo - I believe that is why Monk values him so much.

What worries me is that I think he was converting at an unsustainable rate last season. With a sustained run in the side we might discover if he is an expert marksman or was just a lucky one.

Hmmm, it just seems too clinical to me. I don't doubt he will score, but maybe not at the rate one might expect. But I'll probably admit my error and jump on the bandwagon sooner rather than later if your analysis looks like it will be correct. Cheers!

The thing with Chadli is he knows where to be - he converts so well because he gets into tap-in positions

I don't know if new BPS rules will affect keepers that much but keepers points per million are historically lower than other players. Lower priced keepers tend to offer better value for money.

    Azpi PVA Oshea Huth (Targett)
Ozil Mata Hazard [C] Henderson (Wanyama)
    Giroud Rooney (V) (Sakho)

Idea is to play 4-4-2 GW1. Dont want sakho to face arsenal. But then go to a 3-4-3 GW2. In GW4 i will do Giroud > Aguero and Mata/Özil > 4.5 and then go 4-3-3 with rotating defence. What you guys think?

    Arsenal attack/mid:

    Cazorla
    Ozil
    Ramsey
    Walcott
    Giroud
    Coquelin
    Wilshere
    Chamberlain

    Predicted starters GW1
    Ramsey Coquelin/Wilshere/Flamini (i dont know)
    Walcott Ozil Cazorla
    Giroud

Then after GW2 Sanchez back in the mix - who will be dropped? I can't sleep at night thinking about not having Walcott when he scores a hattrick against West Ham

Cazorla brings energy to Arsenal and Wenger knows this. Injuries and going absent affects all bur Caz and Alexis. Makes the Wally camp (including me) nervous I think.
