Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUES

We’ve already set up the official Scout League with a top prize of £1000 on offer to the winner once again. If you’ve tinkered with your Sky team and are looking to get involved, our league name is FFScout and the code is 8009000.

Finally, we’ve set up a community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

    Ruddy

Ayew could be inspired, Sigg-like, or could be a donkey. The rest looks very well balanced to me 8.5/10

A few thoughts have made me second guess a few things.

Schmiechel, Schwarzer - Confident with this.

Azpi, Kosc, Cedric, Francis, Prodl - Thinking about downgrading Kosc to Bassong as maybe i have too much in defense?

Hazard, Walcott, Depay, Hendo, Bentaleb -With the funds from Kosc to Bassong could do Hendo to Ozil/Mane

      Rooney, Pelle, Sahko

I like the defence. Very similar to mine. I have found the funds to strengthen midfield (playing 352) by going for Kane over Rooney (still think the possibility of Depay in the #10 role leaves a lot to be answered for about the United attack - link up with Rooney didn't look particularly good in pre season) and going for Mert/Bellerin over Koscielny. This would allow another 8.5 as you have said.

I have a habit, don't know if it's good or bad but I can't seems to trust players who somewhat outperformed the season before... That's why though I very much like/love Kane I'm staying clear of him

Same goes for Siggy, Chadli... Do some of you have this superstition or am I a rare breed 😉

No I think its fair. Its somewhat intuitive and with a tight budget we need to be looking at those who are seemingly underpriced than those who could be considered overpriced because of last seasons heroics.

    decision decision

    pelle&ritchie or c.wilson&mane

wilson is cheaper with 5.5 but then i really fancy pelle. he scored almost every game in preseason, seems to be on form at the moment. I haven't seen ritchie played at all but from his stats last season, he might be a good option.

fair point, but I think 0.5 - 1.0m is sufficient enough.

A transfer or two, or even a hit will make Aguero in easy.

This is going to be my first full season and my first ever post here, appreciate all comments and advices:

    Ruddy Butland
(Rutland, as with many others, great rotations and cheap)

    Ivan Lescott O'shea Mings Moore
(Ivan impressed me last season. Lescott O'shea Mings for a 2/3 way rotation)
[Qn: Is there any better nailed on options for Sunderland 4.5 defenders?]

    Hazard Sterling Walcott Ritchie Wanyama
(Hazard self-explanatory. Sterling for short-term before Kun. Walcott for potential OOP and finishing strong last season+pre season. Ritchie and Wanyama for budget reasons)

    Rooney Pelle Sakho
(Rooney nailed on, back to CF position with potentially spot kicks. Pelle for great pre-season form and fixtures, Sakho likewise.)

    1.0M ITB for Kun.

I will have Lescott in my team also just not in the first 4 or so GW's, I think there are better alternatives for 5.0.

    Sup geezers. Long time.

Finally got some time to get on FPL, so thought I'd attempt a team. But it's going to take far more time with all the new rules regarding chips and cookies.

Anyone care to help a noob on any useful links? Mainly looking for:

    1) Rotation spreadsheet
    2) Any article or HTs that summarizes the new rules
    3) Any articles or strategies regarding chips

    Cheers.

Re the chips, the triple captain and bench really had to be for dgws.

The extra attacker can be used in a few ways but unlikely to be a game changer. Personally I'll keep for flexibility in case of a defensive crisis or just play it late or just before my 2nd WC where I dont mind unbalancing my team with a strong 5th mf

The big change is the split season WC meaning most will use the first one within the first 8 weeks so opening team can be more fixture focused and earlier hits have less payback time

Lovely, thanks. Split season WC is an interesting one. So if I got the rules correct, the ideal strategy would be:

        1) WC one week before a DGW
        2) Play the 2 game changing chips in the DGW / super easy fixtures

Its better to have a nailed on squad in case of injuries. You can rotate your 3 cheap defenders and start 1 every week according to fixtures. Saylor is also likely to drop in price because he won't start.

    Mignolet - Myhill

    Martin - Huth - Ivanovic - Fonte - Richards

    Capoue - Henderson - Silva - Walcott - Mane

Does this provide enough flexibility? I'm a fan of keeping a balance in the team and want all guaranteed starters (as much as you can). Cheers.

I think that's a pretty decent side, but lack of Chelsea forwards worries me. You need one of Haz/Fab/Costa IMO. So I'd consider doing Ivan -> Azpi & Mane -> Fabregas. To get Soton cover maybe Kane -> Pelle and that should allow you to upgrade Wilson to Sakho.

How do those keepers rotate? If you are getting Mignolet I'd be tempted to just play him every week. Fabianski/Schmeichel rotate excellently for the same price FWIW

      1. Breedy
        • 15 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Thanks for that, do we think Azpi will play enough to warrant his price? He seems a popular choice so I'm guessing so. I do like the idea of upgrading to Fab.

I'm not sure, I'm guilty of not worrying too much about keepers so just picked a couple whose early fixtures looked reasonable.

        Thanks for the thoughts, appreciated.

Yes I think he will. Chelsea's new LB won't be nearly as good as Luis so Azpi won't be rotated as much, if at all.

First season with this so not really sure what I'm getting myself into. Would anyone mind giving me some advice on my team? Would really appreciate it!

    GK: Butland (Myhill)
    DEF: Azpilicueta--Alderweireld--Francis (Prodl--S.Taylor)
    MID: Hazard--Sterling--Depay--Cazorla (Wanyama)
    ATT: Sakho--Rooney--Pelle

Went for Francis and Prodl since Bournemouth and Watford rotate nicely, otherwise would have had Huth as one of the 4.5m Defenders.

Another one that's solid and templatey apart from that problem at the back.

Sailor won't be in the first team for long, if at all, so you are relying on that Bourn/Watf rotation. I know they've got the fixtures, but if both get off to a bad start you could have a big hole in your starting XI. I think Huth will prove a safer bet.

G'day Dzers! I haven't tinkered with my team for two days now (a good sign that I'm getting close). Unless Costa or Giroud show incredible form tonight, I'll go with this lot. Thoughts most welcome:

    - Schmeichel (Schwarzer)
    Leicester all or nothing!

    - Shaw, Azpli, Kos (Huth and Targett)
Only question mark is around Shaw. A few options at the 5.5 mark... Targett is just for the money grab.

    - Hazard (C), Sterling, Cazorla, Henderson (Fletcher)
Still undecided between Hendo and Milner. But set pieces slighlty gives Hendo the nod. Another option I've toyed with is downgrading Shaw to a 4.5 and upgrading Hendo to Mane...

    - Rooney, Pelle, Sakho
Template front three. If Costa looks fit I'll likely bring him in for Roonpig and downgrade Shaw to a 5.0 or Kos to Merte.

Another one this morning that's looking very solid and templatey. Your questions are my questions:

Shaw's looking fit and lively but there's currently a hole in United's central defence. I'd change him to Cedric, allowing you to upgrade Targett to a playing 4.5 or maybe improving your 5th midf.

I do have 0.5 in the bank stored just in case I want to hop on a bandwagon with the first FT.

Trying not to jerk the knee, but with Sinclair's performance yesterday, could he be worth spending the 0.5 to upgrade my 5th 4.5 mid to?

Given he plays Bournemouth away, BOU might try to go on the attack leaving room for counter attacks by Villa. Decent fixture and would play him ahead of Sakho (WHU) since I will be fielding an Arsenal defender.

Not to mention Sinclair could prove to be the bandwagon I was saving the 0.5 for. Thoughts?

My view is that Sinclair's as pre-season knee-jerky bandwagonny as they come. He hasn't shown any consistency since he left Swansea. Needs to prove himself in the heat of battle for me to consider him.

Then again, my cheap midf punt is Ibe, so who am I to say??? 😉
