Sky Sports Focus – Captaincy Analysis

In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUES

We’ve already set up the official Scout League with a top prize of £1000 on offer to the winner once again. If you’ve tinkered with your Sky team and are looking to get involved, our league name is FFScout and the code is 8009000.

If Pedro comes in, he should take Mata's position, with Mata moving in behind Rooney and Depay going out left.

mmm I know but City then WBA means I can reassess after a few GWs. Think I'm more focussed on getting my peripherals right early doors (GKs, bench, defenders etc.) and then see which of the big hitters I need to nestle in.

You might be able to get away with no Man U attack (although I wouldn't recommend it) but no Chelsea attack is way to risky. Why not just Walcott -> Fab. Like the team alot more then, although I still think you should find the funds for Kane -> Rooney as well.

mmm thanks. Food for thought. Could definitely do with a Chelsea attacker, I agree.

Yep, tons of upside, similar to Bellerin. I think sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and grab defenders with tons of attacking potential when you can.

Really struggling with goalkeepers... Thibaut's only .5 more than Rutland...

Likely 4-2-3-1 and Costa subbing off between 60-70 minutes with bench roles from Falcao.

Costa is 80% to start GW 1, but we just don't know what Mou is up to.

My team is very similar. I have Sterling, but had to downgrade Kosc. Going with Cedric/Jenks or Merte/Huth. Coates to Prodl is an OK move, just depends on what team you want to go with. I think Coates actually rotates better with Francis and Huth, you can see for yourself here:

Not nailed? Someone earlier commented on my team saying do O'Shea -> Coates because he would likely be playing. Seems like we won't know for sure the first few GWs, maybe stay away from SUN defense for now.

If anyone is doubting Watford's multiple signings this offseason, I'd like to remind you that the Pozzo family was responsible for bringing in Alexis Sanchez to Udinese and setting off his career in Europe.

Along with Watford and Udinese, they also own Granada in Spain and have a large, and well respected scouting network throughout the world. Seems like staying in the PL is the top priority for them right now, given all the financial benefits that come from staying in the league.

Personally, don't know much about him and it would be tricky for any manager to get all these new signings to fit in and gel with the team. What I do know, is that these guys are persistent and will do anything and everything to get them to stay up, even if it means at the expense of the other two clubs.

Cool story bro but another rich money gang team investing into a club isn't anything new. Prodl was suppose to be the Austrian messiah but got flogged in the Bundesliga. Valon Behrami was alright for a little while in Italy then became a serial card magnet. Miguel Layun who I like left Liga MX a little too late for my liking. As I said we will see but all I see are rich kids with a pony.

Money might buy you a few wins though, perhaps just enough to stay up. Whether you agree with their sining or not, they have done much more than the other two promoted clubs and the likes of Sunderland and Leicester for example.

Cabaye apparently not 100% fit to start - risk according to Pardew.

Very good! I prefer Wilson to Deeney, cause fixtures. And would downgrade Cech, and upgrade the defence(at least have 1 nailed on the bench)

If United sign Pedro, does this mean that Pedro goes right, Mata nr.10 and Depay left? 🙂

Mata and Rooney would benefit huge

Logically thats what should happen. However LVG has a different filoshofee and he'll probably just drop Mata and keep Young on the LW.

Playing players out of position is his thing. Depay should be a LW and Mata should be a 10. Until Pedro arrives I'd like to see Januzaj get a go ahead of Young either as a 10 or RW

      Means Young's a 70 minute sub.

Personally i think depay is the best pick of the lot atm (see team below) but in a few gw's it could easily be mata indeed. Dont trust LVG for one bit though

After a few hours of tinkering yesterday i'm pretty happy with this lot atm:

    Pants Hennessy
    Azpi Kosc Cedric Prodl Francis
    Fabregas Cazorla Depay Chadli Fletcher
    Aguero Pelle Sakho

Would appreciate any feedback on this

    1. Gorgles

Looks pretty good for the most part. Aguero probably won't start gw1, but you obviously know that and are willing to take the risk. Other than that I would change around a few things, but looks good.

Rooney over Aguero for a game or two.
      Sterling over Depay early on.

      Otherwise, I like it.

Looks good. Aguero may not play GW1. Downgrade to Rooney? Depay may also be a risk first year in EPL. I'm a utd fan so hope he kills it but safer options out there. Looks good though, all the best with it

    Cech - Schmeichel
Ivanovic, Soares, Huth, Targett, Steven Taylor
    Hazard, Sterling, Ozil, Mahrez, Wanyama
    Benteke, Rooney, Rickie Lampert

    Any suggestions?

Defence is very weak and you don't need Cech and Schmeichel. At the very least downgrade Scmeichel to a 4.0 and upgrade Saylor to a 4.5 or better replace Cech with a rotating 4.5 and upgrade Saylor and Targett to either 2x 4.5 or one to a 5.0.

If planning a GW4 WC, which of these looks best?

    A) Cedric, Lukaku and 1.5m in the bank for Kane in GW2
    B) Kos, Lukaku and 0.5m in the bank for Tekkers in GW2
    C) Cedric & Kane from the start

C though A is tempting if you don't have a good captain option. You could regret committing to using that transfer though.

I'm close now! What do you guys think of it?
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Schmeichel (Hennessey)
Darmian // Cédric // Kolarov (Gomez, Targett)
Sterling // Depay // Ozil // Hazard (Bentaleb)
    Rooney // Wilson // Lukaku
    (1.0m ITB)

GW2: Lukaku > Benteke (or Pelle)
    GW4: Sterling or Depay or Ozil > 7.0m +/-
    Rooney > Aguero

If my plan fail I'll do WC in GW4.

As The Clash said, Rudy can't fail! Hence some Gestede love in my line-up for GW1.

    Pantilimon (Myhill)
    Ivanovic, Koscielny, Cedric (Mings, Baker)
    Ritchie, Milner, Hazard, Walcott (Wanyama)
    Rooney, Kane, Gestede

    Thoughts welcome. Thanks.

I like your defence and the Gestede punt. If you're happy for Ritchie to start every week thank no need, but a Wanyama upgrade might give you more options.

Yeah me too, cannot wait for the season to start! Good luck, you would think at least one of last year's Championship strikers is going to cut it in the Premier League, just a matter of who out of Wilson, Gestede and Deeney for me.
