Sky Sports Focus – Captaincy Analysis

In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

Don't trust O'Shea's game time, think Coates is the preferred option around here. You could swap Clyne for Koscielny, and go with Schmeichel over Cech, but a bit sideways in total

O'Shea > Coates, IMO. I don't think he would have moved if he wasn't very confident about a first team spot, and as a Liverpool supporter I've watched him a bit and I think he's pretty good.

      MAYBE Cech>Panti and O'Shea>Merte.

Please let me know what you think! Here are my thoughts currently:

    > Is my defense too left-field? I feel there is major points potential there, but the lack of Chelsea cover is an obvious concern.

    > Is my midfield too light to facilitate my front line?

    > I have 0.5m in the bank, which means I can do Sterling>7.0 and Rooney>Kun OR Sterling>6.0 and Kane>Kun OR Kane>Sakho and Rooney>Kun - should I rather invest the 0.5 (where? Panty>Courtois?) and limit myself to the Rooney+Sakho option?

    > Is Mahrez to light? I could do Mahrez+Kane+0.5>Fabregas+Sakho

    Pantillimon // Hennessey
    Skrtel // Koscielny // Kolarov // Williams // Huth
    Ozil // Mane // Sterling // Mahrez // Bentaleb
    Rooney // Kane // Benteke

Williams is a good pick but what about Joe Gomez? at 4.5 I think he will be a regular starter for Liverpool and can be the cover for Kolarov who will get gametime limitations. Also a good chance he will rocket in price after GW1.

I'm really tempted - BUT I don't think I can afford to have Kolarov and Gomez in one defense? Also, check Skrtel's BPS from last year. Off the charts.

I hear you but Gomez WILL play according to news sources and Moreno being moved on.
Liverpool have 2 nasty fixture in the first 6 and 6 mil is an amount you have to play every week. 4.5 for Gomez. Skrtl not in your side as yet?

I just feel like we have the opportunity to set our teams up in a way that doesn't force a WC in a few weeks time. On the flip side, he has pretty decent bandwagon (price rise) potential!

**DISCLAIMER: I also own Kolarov, so I am massively ignoring my own advice.

He's been a jet for Liverpool in their pre-season. I think Rogers will stick with what he knows to begin with and will slowly introduce the youngsters. Id like to think Gomez will nail down a spot after 5-8 GWs though, he'll be in everyone's team!

Agree with Test Eagles. Moreno was good in pre season when he played but I heard BR thinks Moreno lacks the defence to his game that Gomez offers. BR doesn't take into consideration age and experience, if the player is performing the role required he will get the job.

Is there a general consensus on the best MUN defensive asset to go with? All are the same price and will start GW1.

MUN have arguably the best opening 3 fixtures from a defensive perspective in TOT, avl, NEW and LVG teams don't generally concede many, so it could be a good option to get 1.

    A) Shaw - has looked sharp in pre season and has attacking potential. Bit of a sick note though and could be replaced by Rojo/Blind at any stage

    B) Darmian - similar to Shaw without the sick note bit. Main concern is LVG's statement that he was bought as back up to Valenica

    C) P Jones - Arguably more of a rotation concern, but reasonably good for Baps

    D) De Gea - no rotation, good for saves, but could be off in the window which would lead to a transfer wasted

I'd go with A. Don't think he's going to be replaced by Rojo or Blind any time soon. Rojo/Blind to fight it out for the LCB role.

LVG - "It shall be the season of Luke Shaw"

Yeah, he's got the biggest goal threat, but is a tad expensy and doesn't look like nailed to start based on pre season.

Pre-Season is a load of bollocks. Count up the minutes played, as I have done with West Ham.

Jones and Smalling will be competing for a spot. LVG wants them to be paired with a left footer so Blind and Rojo are the left foot options.

Coming round to the idea of going with just Fabregas from Chelsea, or none from the Blues at all...

It's controversial, sure, but looking at their early fixtures and all the price tags, I just don't feel it's worth it. Think there are better options out there and the money can be spent better in different places.

Especially, with the 2 WCs this season, if it all goes to crap, there's always the first WC.

I'm really considering the idea quite seriously now. Are you planning an early WC?

Mind sharing your team or is it top secret? 😉 I initially tinkered with a Hazard-less team, instead going with Fabregas, but then I thought "How many points can I really see him scoring in the early GWs?" so I went and said stuff it and dropped him for Mane, who I believe, with fixtures on his side, definitely has the potential to outscore Fabregas early on, and maybe even Hazard for the early fixtures.

I might just be going crazy though.

No early WC for me and I can't guarantee my team will stay the same, its been changing constantly since the CS match. I'm in total flux right now.

Mane over Fabregas looks a decent play right now with those fixtures in mind. Fabregas was very ordinary against Arsenal and its actually put me off him. Its not a bad play to go for a more explosive player early on.

Exactly what I'm thinking atm...really like the look of a Hazard free team.

When do you see yourself WCing? I haven't done enough research, but do you know if there will be any DGWs before the 1st WC expires?

DGW's are always in the second half of the season. I'd like to WC around GW 9-11 when there are some good fixture swings.
