The Digest – Gameweek 7

Alexis Sanchez explodes into form with a hat-trick against Leicester. Tottenham’s momentum is building after sweeping aside City, whilst the big hitters are finally starting to deliver. Here’s our thoughts on Gameweek 7 in this week’s Digest…

The Player

A stunning hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-2 thrashing of Leicester finally announced Alexis Sanchez’ return to Fantasy form this season.

After a sluggish start, mainly brought about by his exertions for Chile in this summer’s Copa America, the Gunners’ wide man eventually translated his superb underlying statistics into Fantasy returns to reward those who patiently stood by his abilities as a heavy-hitter.

One look at last season’s returns highlights Sanchez’ explosive, yet erratic, showings. Somewhat surprisingly, the former Barcelona man produced returns in just 15 of his 35 league outings, blanking on 20 occasions, yet still racked up 16 goals, eight assists and 207 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his debut year at the Emirates.

Clearly, then, Sanchez will frustrate us and has the potential to embark on barren runs but has such a strong upside that, as Saturday’s 20-point haul demonstrated, going without him can be a dangerous tactic.

With Arsene Wenger now believing that his star player is finally back to his best, it’s little wonder that Sanchez is the second most transferred-in player since the weekend, as Fantasy managers belatedly scramble for a piece of the action.

The Team

An outstanding comeback win over City on Saturday stretched Tottenham’s unbeaten run to six matches as Mauricio Pochettino’s men moved into sixth spot after seven Gameweeks.

Encouragingly for Spurs and Fantasy managers alike, the club’s form at both ends of the pitch bodes well for future returns. Kevin de Bruyne’s early strike at the Lane is the only goal Pochettino’s side have conceded in the last four, with clean sheets accrued against Everton, Sunderland and Palace over that period. The summer addition of Toby Alderweireld at centre-half, allied with the decision to move Eric Dier into the double-pivot has paid off handsomely in terms of improving resilience, and the duo’s potential at both ends of the pitch was highlighted after they both bagged a goal in the 4-1 thrashing of Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Crucially for Pochettino, his attack finally seems to have found their form. Spurs went into the weekend having scored just five goals in the first six fixtures but ran riot against City. Harry Kane finally opened his account for the campaign, whilst fit-again Christian Eriksen – who was afforded his first start since Gameweek 2 – has now earned an assist in each of his last three outings. With Erik Lamela chipping in with a goal and assist, and Heung-Min Son’s energy boosting their pressing game in the final third, the north London outfit are starting to click.

The upcoming schedule – which sees that face Swansea, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea in the next seven – is by no means easy but, as evidenced on Saturday, Spurs look to have the form and momentum to prevail.

Talking Point

Sanchez and Kane’s return to form was mirrored by Daniel Sturridge as the Liverpool striker netted twice in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.

Finally back in first-team contention in the previous Gameweek, Sturridge thrived alongside the dynamic Danny Ings as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in his 3-4-1-2 formation. Tellingly, Sturridge played from start to finish against Tim Sherwood’s side, suggesting he’s fast approaching full match sharpness after months on the sidelines.

After a number of weeks where the big hitters have failed to justify their hefty price tags, is the tide starting to turn? So far, the Fantasy games have been dominated by Leicester pair Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy whilst Dimitri Payet has wasted no time in bringing his Marseille form to the Premier League.

Last weekend served a timely reminder, though, that top class talents will prevail and keeping faith in the premium picks can pay off. As Sergio Aguero (NEW, BOU, NOR) and Eden Hazard (SOU, AVL, LIV) both prepare for three home matches in the next four, their loyal owners will be hoping that the duo take their cue from last week’s events and start to justify their premium price tags.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So I'm dangerously close to a controversial 8 pointer, which is very unlike me.

    Mane & Pelle -> Silva/KDB & Berahino (-8)

Planning to WC for GW11 and SOT have tough fixtures between now and then (che, LEI, liv), and we all know how they faltered against the bigger teams last season. Granted, LEI is an attractive fixture, but with Mane playing an international in Africa 2 days before it, I fear he could get rested. They have options after all with the likes of Long and JRod. Silva and KDB by contrast have 4 and 5 days to recover before they face BOU, which is just as good a fixture as LEI, arguably better.

If the real City turn up they should put NEW and BOU to the sword over the next 2 game weeks, and with Berahino being on pens and scoring 2 with 5 bonus in the 2 games since transfergate, and facing SUN, cpl and nor in the next 3 (arguably the 3 leakiest defences in the league), he could also do well.

A load of waffle, or am I on to something here...?

What relevance do the internationals have though? Surely as much chance of Mane/Pelle getting injured as KDB/Silva/Berahino?

My point is that you may have to take another set of hits after the international break to sort out any potential injuries. I think it is better to reassess those transfers after the international break.

I think you have a point but I don't think it's worth a -8, especially when Pelle and Mane are both fit, playing and capable of scoring goals at anytime

what? Chelsea have kept only one CS and that against a team with nine men, Leicester look like conceding at least 3 goals a game and liverpool just conceded against aston villa at home so surely Southampton can score against them.. I can see him getting much.

    Andre Ayew owners.

    What the hell happened??

4 attempts in the last 4. 10 peno box touches.

At the same time - Swansea seem to raise themselves for the big games and I can't help but look at Spurs at home this weekend as a nice fixture for him to grab a goal in.

On the other hand downgrading him gives me funds for upgrading Wilson (rather than a sideways move to an e.g. Vardy)

But who are the options downgrade of Ayew?

    Redmond
Hoolahan (bit worry about minutes and 'just' being a creator)
    Sako
    Others??

Who would you want to upgrade Wilson to anyway? The players around his price seem the best bet at the moment anyway. I'd stick with Ayew for the next couple and get Vardy/Berahino/Sakho

Just used the clone tool to remove the original text, then used the warp tool on the replacement text to make it appear to go with the folds on the clothes. For the head replacement I just cut the head from another image, pasted it in and then used a layer mask to remove the original background from round it.

Takes a bit of practise that's all. I've been messing with Photoshop for years. It helps to have two high quality images to start with too.

Just noticed it was the wording on the trophy you'd asked about. Same principle though. The main thing with that was finding the same font that Barclays use for their logo.

Why are you getting rid of Darmian? You have Kolarov and Bellerin in your team already which means you can weather the storm of Darmian's next 3 fixtures at which point you wont need to get him in for United's lovely run of fixtures until GW20 or so. Richards has Stoke and SWA at home in 2 of the next 3.. If that does not sit well with you, you can also do a Richards to Martin for his lovely fixtures in the next 3.

        Agreed

Hennessey, Zouma, Galloway and Targett to Butland, Toby, Francis and Soures

Pretty good but I wouldn't invest in Chelsea defence personally, I'd downgrade zouma to dier and upgrade Westwood to Sinclair / Morrison / hoolahan

Clyne/Cedric -> C Dawson 1FT a good move this week? Or does the MNF change our mind on WBA and Pulis?

Got Yaya to deal with, just hoping he's fit for the weekend really.

I'm wilcarding this week and if I didn't already have Myhil in, I'd swap Cedric for Dawson personally. I think WBA will do well over the next few weeks.

Hmmm true. Sterling is the serious weakness in City's attack. I cannot believe City paid that much for him. He really is another overrated English youngster.

For sure - the home grown status has almost tripled his price.

I think he might come good, if he can brush up his finishing

To me he just lacks that footballing brain, creativity and ability to pick out a pass and finish. He is just a pacy winger with decent dribbling. 48 million; wow!

Wilson's price is dropping like a stone (5.19% an hours according to FF Fix), and Vardy rising by 2.28 per hour. Reluctantly made the switch before the Wilson's injury confirmation, to avoid last nights price changes, now praying for no CL injuries.

It doesn't really matter whether you get anymore injuries, Wilson is out for 6 months so you are gonna have to take him out

He has been playing really well, Poach likes him a lot. But as a DM he has been working very hard to shield the back 4, I think that's the reason he is a card magnet now.

I've had dier for quite a while now, been surprised his name has gone under the radar until now. 5 mil for a Spurs defender playing in midfield and likes a shot on goal....no brainer for me and been one of my very few success stories so far

My thoughts exactly. He has been pushed forward as a CDM so I took the chance. If he lets me down I'll just swap him out later.

    Hi all. My team is...
    Myhill - ruddy
    Kolarov - Richards - Muniesa - Francis - Williams
    Sánchez - toure - Westwood - coutinho - mahrez
    Gomis - aguero - Wilson

The obvious transfer out is Wilson but to who...
Also should I take a hit to do changes elsewhere? ..
    A. Wilson to sakho
    B. Wilson to Igahlo
    C. Wilson and couthino to vardy and prayet -4
    D. Wilson and muniesa to sakho and cresswell -4
    E. Wilson Coutinho and muniesa to vardy prayet and cresswell -8
    F. Wilson to vardy

I am thinking of taking the hits though

    Thanks

If I had your team I'd go with A

C looks good but I'm not convinced Payet will score 4 more points than Coutinho to make it worth while

Thanks for the replies! Only have 4.9 to spend on a striker with selling Wilson as I'm upgrading Chadli to Payet, will be bench fodder for now anyways. Jerome the better bet? Sad slim pickings I know 🙁

Which defender and which attacker would you bench?

    A) Prodl (bou)
    - OR -
    B) Francis (WAT)

    C) Ighalo (bou)
    - OR -
    D) Redmond (LEI)

    Currently leaning towards A + D...
