Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 9

Our midweek regular returns this evening as we give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of 22 players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For Gameweek 9, here’s who is currently in our thinking…

Goalkeepers

We’re eyeing up a trusted pair of hands and a potential gamble in this position.

Boaz Myhill (4.7) lies second in the Fantasy Premier League keeper rankings behind Heurelho Gomes, having chalked up seven save points and six bonus points this term. A home tie against Sunderland – who drew blanks in their last two road clashes – looks conducive to West Bromwich Albion’s fourth clean sheet in six, despite recent form and injuries in the Baggies backline. We have Craig Dawson as an additional rearguard asset, should we opt for our second keeper option.

That brings in a new and unexpected name to the Scout Picks Squad, as Rob Elliot is considered in the light of Tim Krul’s season-ending knee injury. The Toon welcome a Norwich City outfit that’s chalked up just three goals in their previous three road encounters and, with a price tag of 4.0, Elliot already looks a viable short-term option whilst Karl Darlow remains sidelined with an ankle problem – reports today confirm that this will be at least another three weeks.

Defenders

Daryl Janmaat would be our preferred coverage of the Magpies’ dubious potential this weekend. Over the last four Gameweeks, no defender has amassed more attempts (nine), shots inside the box (five) and on target (six), underlining his attacking threat against a Canaries defence that’s failed to tally a single clean sheet. At 4.9, we’re waiting on Janmaat’s availability following his withdrawal from the Dutch squad through injury – the club today indicated that they were confident that Janmaat would be in contention.

It’s a similar story with Aleksandar Kolarov who is also an injury doubt. He’s bagged two goals in as many outings for Serbia during the international break, reaffirming his attacking prowess from left-back. No team has fashioned more attempts at home (86) than Manchester City, which suggests that the 6.2-priced defender will be afforded shooting opportunities when Bournemouth pay a visit. However, we’re waiting on an update from the Etihad following a hamstring injury sustained whilst on duty; we may well draft in Vincent Kompany to replace the Serb if the City skipper is cleared for the Cherries encounter.

Cezar Azpilicueta (6.0) at least presents a safe route into the Chelsea rearguard as they prepare to fend off a Villa attack that’s drawn two blanks and ranked second-bottom for big chances (three) in the last trio of Gameweeks. We may yet swap out Azpilicueta and call on Kurt Zouma, at 5.5, if we’re convinced that Jose Mourinho will recall the Frenchman following the Saints reverse – we expect this to be the case; Zouma may even get the call at right-back following confirmation of Branislav Ivanovic’s absence.

The aforementioned Craig Dawson, meanwhile, boasts security of starts in the Baggies’ rearguard and ranks among the top five defenders for attempts (seven) and shots inside the (five) across the season.

Valued at just 4.9, Gabriel serves as the cut-price route into Arsenal’s defence ahead of a trip to Watford, who rank bottom over the last four Gameweeks for shots on target (eight). We’re opting for the Brazilian, over our preferred Watchlist candidate, Hector Bellerin, due to the nagging doubt over rotation on the eve of Arsenal’s now vital Champions League clash with Bayern on Tuesday.

Federico Fernandez (5.0) completes our defensive selection. Aside from Kyle Naughton, he is the only other Swansea defender to fashion an attempt this term (six attempts, five shots inside the box), rendering Fernandez the choice pick ahead of a home tie against Stoke City. Up until Gameweek 8, Naughton was our weapon of choice in the Swans’ rearguard but his absence against Spurs now casts short-term doubt over his security of starts after Angel Rangel impressed at right-back in the 2-2 stalemate.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez (11.2) banished his barren spell in spectacular fashion over the last two Gameweeks with a five-goal haul. Considering that Arsenal have carded 11 more shots inside the box (58) than any other outfit on their travels, the Hornets’ organised defence are in for a stern test of their credentials. Although there is some concern over possible rotation in the Gunners’ lineup with the Bayern tie in mind, we feel that Sanchez is too vital to the Arsenal cause for Arsene Wenger to risk a teamsheet surprise. We’re not so certain on Theo Walcott, though.

Elsewhere in the big-hitter bracket, Kevin De Bruyne (10.3) has notched three goals and two assists in his last three outings and could profit from the fact that Bournemouth have surrendered the second most big chances (11) away from home. With Sergio Aguero almost certainly out of the equation, the in-form Belgian looks a Scout Picks no-brainer and a leading captain candidate.

Eden Hazard (11.3) has delivered attacking returns in each of his previous three starts (one goal and three assists) and ranks third among midfielders for key passes (15) since Gameweek 5. The Villains are likely to aid the Belgian’s pursuit of goals, having shipped eight in their previous three away matches. We’re not certain if we’ll opt for Chelsea attacking cover and, if so, whether Hazard will get the nod over Diego Costa. Right now, we’re looking to work Hazard’s lofty price tag into our Picks XI.

Dimitri Payet (8.1) racked up three more key passes (23) than any of his counterparts over the last four Gameweeks, which bodes well for the Hammers’ trip to Selhurst Park. In opposition, Yohan Cabaye ranks fifth among midfielders for attempts (eight) over the last two Gameweeks and is well placed for profit against a Hammers side that’s placed third for shots conceded inside the box (43) away from home.

Following two impressive displays in an England shirt, Ross Barkley’s form is currently hard to ignore. He’ll be looking to impress again on the big stage and punish a Manchester United team that has seen their defence breached on seven occasions in their previous three trips away from Old Trafford.

Swansea’s Andre Ayew (7.2) will be encouraged by the revelation that Stoke have conceded eight more big chances (19) than any team away from home, while our final midfield slot goes to Sadio Mane (7.9). The Senegal international has recorded two goals and three assists in as many starts and now enjoys a home clash against a Leicester City side that’s conceded 10 times in four matches. Mane or Graziano Pelle look certain to make the Picks XI come Friday.

Forwards

Pelle (8.1) is the league’s top-scoring forward (54) this season, having tallied five goals and assists. Moreover, the Italy international sits atop the summit of the forwards leaderboard over the last six Gameweeks for attempts (25) and shots inside the box (23).

Jamie Vardy (6.7) will be in opposition at St Mary’s and goes into the match having drawn just one blank in eight outings this campaign, netting six goals in his previous five starts. Only Arsenal (10) netted more than the Foxes (nine) over the last four Gameweeks, suggesting that the Saints could struggle to register a shut-out.

In the last four Gameweeks, only two forwards mustered more shots on target than Romelu Lukaku (seven). The 8.3-priced striker bagged three goals and two assists over that period so should enter the Red Devils head-to-head brimming with confidence. In the absence of Sergio Aguero, Wilfried Bony (8.2) will spearhead a Sky Blues attack that recorded 16 more attempts (93) than any side over the last four Gameweeks. It might be too simplistic to switch Bony in for Aguero but, right now, we’re sorely tempted.

The fact is, viable options elsewhere are far from plentiful. Certainly Diego Costa (10.9) will be desperate to find form following his three-match suspension but Chelsea’s lack of confidence has to be factor that casts doubt over his potential. Having said that, only two teams allowed more shots inside the box (22) than Villa across the past two Gameweeks, exposing a vulnerability that Costa could eagerly exploit.

Our final squad spot is an even bigger gamble. Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (6.2) opened his account last time out against Man City so will fancy his chances against Norwich’s more generous defence this Gameweek – if he can ensure he remains on the pitch.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Gameweek 8 Community Champion Supersonic was brought down to earth with a bump after his gamble to go without Sergio Aguero failed to pay off and he mustered just 46 points, which was 38 points behind the Scout Picks. Massive still retains top spot, then – he beat us by 16 points in Gameweek 6 and stays in the lead to claim the £100 Amazon voucher.

The Community Champion for Gameweek 9, as selected by our lottery, is Meinhoff. He is now in his sixth season, with last year’s rank of 14,627 his highest.

Should I get in bellerin for a hit?
Bit worried about the status of my defence with kolorov nyom Davies , also have Dawson and Francis as the only safe bets for now.

I think I've decided to go with 352 for the time being. I was considering getting Lukaku but his next two fixtures are terrible and I can't see him doing much. Similarly Costa's form is terrible and I can't really get him either. Arguably the better option is Ighalo even as a sub with Walcott being the 5th mid. I think I'm happy to punt on Wally for at least a game either side of the CL match. Do we think Walcott will start the league games?

I suspect he'll start both and get dragged 60-70 minutes in.

He's a great punt Ryan, but keep in the back of your mind it's still punty and try and not be disappointed if Wenger benches him for a game in favour of Donkey.

Honestly, I'm a little scared not owning him!

I'm happy to take a punt because Costa was my alternative punt anyway. Ideally I'd like to have some Everton and United cover from GW11 so I'm happy to give Walcott at least 2GW's as a punt with the potential to hold for longer.

Can't argue with that logic ... and I agree that Chelsea have been that bad, and Costa that out of form that you can't take a chance with them right now.

Lukaku and Martial could be back in many teams before long, especially if Pelle and Vardy start drying up!

Would you play Ighalo over Prödl in AOA, or hold that chip? I have a stellar front 8 but only two defenders I'd be confident playing are Kolarov and Dawson. Other 3 are Prödl, Francis and Lovren.

Having said that, it's not a bad week to use the AOA chip, considering how many orange and yellow flags there are on defenders. I can't think of a better opportunity if you're front 8 are looking good? Sorry Zasa, i don't mean to disagree ... but i can't think of a better time to use it? Only downside would be that Ighalo plays Arsenal who are tight up back right now.

        1. Zasa

It certainly isn't TE, your guess is as good as mine. Regarding your last sentence, well that is precisely why I wouldn't use it this GW. His 8th attackers fixture isn't good IMO, & that is the sole reason why I'd prefer just playing the defender.

At some point throughout the season, I think it's fair to say that it's highly probable that his eight attacker's fixture will be far better than Arsenal at home, surely? Why play the AoA on a 50/50 call involving playing either the inferior team's defender or their attacker?

"considering how many orange and yellow flags there are on defenders", I don“t see how that's relevant here, sorry TE. Are you implying that Bournemouth/Watford having two flagged players greatly impairs their defensive solidity? Or is this about Kolarov?

I hate to be blunt TE, but I don't think you're making a good case here 🙁 I think the chances of Arsenal scoring & them keeping a CS are both equally as likely, IMO. Going off underlying stats, xG & xGC,the numbers simply don't bode too well for Watford on either end of the pitch

Morning all. Been off here for a while, needed a rest. Decided that hits are justified this week

    Butland/ McCarthy
    Kolorov Richards Williams Targett Gomez
    Pedro Sanchez Mata Westwood Maherez
    Aguero Martial Vardy

    1FT about 1.3M ITB

    Plan is -8
    Gomez to Bert
    Aguero to Costa
    Pedro to KDB

I know i could prob hold Pedro but just want him gone. Need the defender move incase Kolorov doesnt make it. Any thoughts, am i being mental ignoring Pelle? He seems all the rage on here

Yours is not a bad move, but I prefer to boot Targett out, since he is not going to start anyway. But I am not too sure whether you can afford those transfers if Targett instead of Gomez.

Can you do the Aguero and Pedro move without the Gomez move?

Kolarov is still likely to play and it doesn't seem worth the -4 for a defender.

Costa ... mheh ... i can see the attraction, he's been in bad form though and Chelsea are far from hitting their straps! Pelle would be my safe bet ... depends where you sit in your Mini-league!

Yeah i know what you mean about Costa, doing well in my mini leagues, Pelle is form for sure and the more i think about it he makes sense. I just have that 'fun' feeling about getting in Costa and captaining him and seeing him get a hatful.
Just writng that makes me think Pelle is the better shout! Thanks again, looks like the DZ is loving Pelle and maybe i should listen

For those doubling up on Pelle and Mane, here's a thought

Southampton's next 5 fixtures: LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO

The next 5 fixtures after that appear a lot tougher: mci, AVL, cpl, TOT, ARS
It might not be so wise to double up for those games.

Pelle -> Aguero could be the way to go in GW14, after City have played Liverpool

Given Alexis is carrying an injury, is currently playing his second game in the space of a few days, is on the other side of the world right now, and Arsenal have a must win Champions League game coming up, I am not as certain as you.

There's a good chance he'll start, but if he doesn't, my surprise factor is zero tbh

Mahrez is another with plenty of room for doubt. Mane.

I've heard people taking a hit for Willian which I would respectfully describe as a very bad idea.

        There are others

You may be right about Alexis.
But Mane and Mahrez played at the same time as KDB, Hazard and Pelle. So makes no sense benching them.

Koeman has shown his willingness to bench Mane under the same circumstances before tho, so it's his attitude that is relevant.

Mahrez is more to do with the number of options Leicester have that won't have been flying all over the world. Albrighton for example-sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't. You'd think there's a higher than average chance they'll utilise him. I'm not sure what Inler and Kante's international commitments are

There's usually a game on Thursday or Friday from which Mane returns late. That's why he's benched. He apparently won't be playing that fixture this season. At least that's what I've been told.
Inler scored against San Marino, that much I know.

        Ahem, there you are!!!

Wanted to chat about yourr 3-5-2 idea.

        Having similar thoughts myself.

Based on the four essentials - Payet, Mahrez, KGB and Sanchez - you'd need a fifth midfielder most likely to come from Mane or Walcott.

The three forwards would be Vardy, Lukaku and Pele.

        Thought process:

        Kun allows the extra cash
There are 5 or 6 mids now worth consideration with less forwards appealing
        Mids outscoring fwds
352 allows the chips to be played

Yeah but I'm not sure I want a full front 8 just yet. Someone I can bench is handy, such as Ighalo.

Lukaku has 2 tough games so I can probably afford to go without for the time being. Perhaps Barkley could be an option in a few weeks? he's doing well for England.

I'm going without Payet for now. I can't really fit him in and his fixtures are kind of awkward. I'm happy to monitor for now.

And remember, we will need to buy Kun back at some point, so best not to spread the cash around too much.

In only my 2nd WC draft (1st after the Aguero news), I think I have finalised it.

    Myhill Hennessey

    Bellerin Jagielka Cedric Dawson Davies
    Sanchez KDB Walcott Mane Mahrez
    Pelle Vardy Ighalo

    Bank: 2.9

Plan would be to save 2FT's for GW11 and can look to bring in some Everton cover. Looking further ahead to GW14 I'd need enough cash ITB to do Pelle -> Aguero.

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    1. Kurtinho

I'd prefer Coleman over Jagielka, and the strikeforce seems a little light. But overall that's a decent draft. You're onto something.

I have to bench someone at the end of the day. Could easily upgrade Ighalo but I like that I am happy to always bench him if need be due to his cheap price. Coleman is a fair shout but I'm conscious of knowing I'll need 5m in the bank for when I upgrade Pelle. It wouldn't be wise to splash out too much.

      - Jagielka over Coleman ?

        - I prefer going for the cheapest way into a teams defence. That way I'll make it easier for myself when I need the cash to get Aguero back

        - Pulis effect, I'm a believer. Although I'm worried about Myhills game time a little, I have considered Howard instead.

          Fabianski/Stekelenburg are nice alternatives.

Fabianski is an idea. I may even consider some sort of rotation with Myhill as well

              Some nice fixtures for Flappy
In the next 10: STK, avl, nor, BOU, LEI, WBA

In between those games, Myhill has:
LEI, and BOU. Probably not worth a rotation.

Myhill > Gomes? Since you have Dawson as cover, atleast Gomes is nailed, or Butland rotates well with Palace and nail. Don't think there is any better and nailed keepers than these 2.

I like Gomes. Its a fair shout. I wonder if he could work with Myhill?

Actually they rotate pretty good fixture wise.

I think can rotate quite well with Myhill the next 10 GWs, except from GW13.

SUN, nor/stk, WHU/LEI, lei, MUN/ARS*, avl, NOR, sun, BOU, swa

I think I'll go for it. It looks good and I'll back Pulis in the 50/50 calls

Elliot isn't a sure starter either. He is for the next month then Darlow comes back and is the new backup this season.

I don't mind too much if Hennessy loses his spot, So long as the other GKer is nailed

I don't think those GKers will last for long. Darlow and Courtios will be back before Xmas

Looks good. How about Ashley Williams over Davies?
Looks fairly similar to what my team should be like for this GW. 😀

I'm worried that I have too many expensive defenders. I like having at least one 4.5. I'm not really sold on Swansea's defence, although I'm not sure why.

Not keen on the gks if Myhill is soon to lose his place. Why not put Cech in and play him each week? Cheapest way into the ARS defence and reliable.

The rest of the team looks great although I'd swap Igloo for Lukaku now as Lukaku will score against anyone esp the better teams.

I think it's a risk to go without Kolorov until he gets dropped.

      Rating: 7/10

Yeah I'm looking to change my GKers. Considering Myhill and Gomes 9.2m. I like having Bellerin due to his attacking threat and potential baps. I have considered Howard and DDG if I were to back just one GKer though.

Lukaku hasn't done so well against the hard teams this year. I'm thinking of leaving it for now with the next 2 fixtures in mind. I do have the cash itb though if he appears essential by GW11. Ighalo is also a useful sub due to his cheap price.

It is a risk to go without Kolarov but I'm not sure about his injury and I know Clichy will get games before long.

Pelle. Scored a nice goal for Italy and will always start. Mane sometimes gets benched after an international break.
