The Fantasy Football Scout Leagues Round-Up

With the third international break of the season upon us, we’re afforded time to assess the leading contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across a variety of games. With leagues in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ultimate Fantasy Premier League,Sky Sports and Sun Dream Team, there’s plenty to catch up on.

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde surged to the top of our Scout League – and 20th in the overall rankings – by way of a 64-point haul this Gameweek. His decision to captain Romelu Lukaku paid dividends, while Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane also found the target. Although all four of Jon’s midfielders drew blanks, clean sheets from David de Gea, Virgil van Dijk and Aleksandar Kolarov bolstered his score.

Despite posting 60 points (15 above the average), Mark Kalafatas was displaced from the top spot following the last round of fixtures. The 29th-ranked manager opted for a 3-5-2 set-up, deploying Vardy and Lukaku as his strike partnership. Manuel Lanzini (1% ownership) proved to an excellent differential, while Mesut Ozil carded a handy eight points.

Samuel Slennet – who sat at the summit when we last penned a leagues round-up – sits in third place by virtue of a 57-point Gameweek. Samuel was rewarded for handing Vardy the skipper’s armband and also profited from Jack Butland’s and Daryl Janmaat’s shut-out points.

Amassing 72 points, Chris Rigden propelled himself into fourth place. A back four that included the likes of Butland and Scott Dann combined for 31 points. In the attacking positions, Ozil, Lukaku and Vardy (captain) brought home the bacon.

Rounding off the top five, Panna Fricker (65 points) also excelled on the defensive front after plumping for double Manchester City coverage (Bacary Sagna and Kolarov). Captain Harry Kane and Vardy complemented her defensive returns.

We’re pleased to say we sit in top spot in the League of Leagues as we look to defend our title for another season. To join this league use the code: 600-520

FPL MEMBERS SCOUT LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde is also the frontrunner in the Members League and boasts a 34-point lead at the top of the leaderboard.

Andrew Dougan retained his second spot from last Gameweek with a tally of 48 points. Although his Alexis Sanchez captaincy failed to hit the mark, Vardy, Lukaku, Butland and Kolarov came up trumps.

Third-place Marsel Levi was left frustrated by Wilfried Bony’s early withdrawal but still managed to accrue 50 points. Beyond a Vardy captaincy, Kolarov, Ozil and De Gea were his key performers.

The curiously named Zunker 1 will have some tinkering to do in the wake of injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Dimitri Payet. Nonetheless, they notched a respectable 48 points, owing to a Lukaku captaincy and solid returns from the likes of Vardy and Marcos Rojo.

Trev Grant edged into the top five after picking up 49 points. Owning Payet and Bony thwarted his progress, but a captained Vardy, Kolarov and Chris Smalling rescued his Gameweek.

ULTIMATE FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Panna Fricker’s success extends to Ultimate Fantasy Premier League ladder, where she sits in the gold-medal berth. A 60-point Gameweek elevated her to a total score of 932 – good enough for second in the overall rankings.

John Donnelly is hot on the heels of Panna with 928 points, having relinquished the top spot due to a disappointing 30-point haul. Ryan Evans slipped into third position with a score of 920, despite beating the 43-point average by five points.

Michael Wong ended this Gameweek on 915 points after tallying 63 points – no one in the top 50 surpassed that total on the weekend. Dean Howard retains a place in the top five but is now five points adrift (910) of Michael Wong.

To join this league, use the code: 1258-516.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL

Alan Wood (826 points) has taken a commanding lead at the peak of the Scout League, with Mark William (792) 34 points back in second place. Jeff Payne (783) is clinging onto third by a one-point margin yet has chalked up five more goals than Alan Wood.

We currently sits in fourth spot in the league of leagues as we look to defend our crown. To join this league use the league name: FFScout and the code: 8009000

SUN DREAM TEAM

Jeff Payne (776 points) enjoys a 10-point lead at the top of the table, with Chris Smalling (93) tallying the most points among his 11-man squad. He’s profited greatly from a back five comprised entirely of Manchester United defenders, although there’s work to be done with injuries to Luke Shaw and Payet.

David O Byrne (766 points) fronts the chasing pack. Amassing 103 points, Graziano Pelle has been his star man, while Alexis Sanchez’s 87 points have also been impactful. A 23-point gap between him and Tony H. (743) has opened up, with the latter harvesting 187 points from his two-man strike partnership (Harry Kane and Pelle).

Nigel Dodds (739) has loaded up with seven of Louis van Gaal’s troops, including Wayne Rooney (104 points). He’s fending off the challenge from Tim Mongiat (738), who’s just one point adrift of fourth place and also possesses a team with a distinct Man United flavour.

Only just seen all this stuff about Vardy maybe being banned.

REALLY hope he isnt. Doesnt seem to have broken on any big news sites yet so lets hope it gets brushed under the carpet?

I feel like people are jumping the gun here on Aguero..

If he's on the verge of being ready for Liverpool, then I can't see any reason why he would get more than 30 minutes at the very most (as in, if they're up by 2, don't bring him on) when they have a much more crucial match versus Juventus only 4 days later. I also don't buy the 'gain match fitness' reasoning in a match against Liverpool.

They're up 1 point on Juventus and beating them will secure top spot in the group (massive for City) regardless of the outcome of match day 6 vs Borussia Monchengladbach. Draw versus Juventus and they have to beat Borussia to secure top spot, but lose and they need Juventus to lose while they win to grab it.

For a team with known struggles in CL, avoiding a top seed in the first round of the knockouts is a big deal.

I think when it comes to Aguero a lot of people read way more between the lines than there is. By his own word he's on the verge of training with the squad and there is "more to do", let alone stepping onto the match day pitch.

    Repost from last page

Is an Aguero Kane Lukaku frontline the way forward? The latter two have fixtures and form on their side and we all know the case with Aguero.

I'm on a WC now and if I went Bolasie over Mane/Coutinho I could afford it, it would just mean dropping Vardy of course. With the fixtures we might see a bit of digression, although I'm keeping Mahrez for Leicester cover.

To get that front line the decision of Bolaise over Mane/ Cout is easy for me, yes do it.

Vardy is the question you should be looking at imo. For me in your line up its Kane vs Vardy. If Vardy covers Kanes points, or even gets slightly less, at a much lower price you have to have him. But will he? This is the question and i have no answer im afraid!

Yeah that's a good point Sab. With those fixtures on paper you'd say no, but he is in ripper form so it's a tough call

That first sentence is badly written by me

Dropping Vardy is a no no.

Personally, Vardy is way ahead of Kane right now in so many different ways. Vardy, Lukaku and Kun imo.

Fair enough. But why do you think Vardy is so far ahead of Kane? Vardy probably has slightly better form but Kane has much better fixtures, Vardy faces some tough defences soon

        1. Jafalad
          • 14 Years

Form, price, value, plays in an attacking team, fixtures are irrelevant as he'll score against anyone...and of course...the clincher: I have him. 😉

Kane has good form and also plays in an attacking team. Can't say Vardy has worse value though.

And the statement "he'll score against anyone" is a bit misguided I think. There's no evidence of that yet.

He's been consistent since gwk 31 last season. Kane is hardly flush with goals regardless.

He scored 5 goals last season. No doubt that he has vastly improved on that goalfront and his shooting stats have been excellent but I'm not sure if he can keep up at his current rate against stronger defences

Those 3 are the best 3 strikers to have. 100%

But I just feel one has to be dropped to compensate Vardy. His ownership is huge and could score just as points as those picks over the next month or so.

Playing bench boost this week i think. All my players have pretty good fixtures and with my two FT's I can make it so none of my forwards and backs play each other.
Better playing it in this circumstance than waiting for a double gameweek hey?

Well, it amounts to the same thing. Bench boost means 4 of your players who you'd normally bench get points. They could all be dgwers without having 15

Just play it in a dgw - doesn't matter how many are playing doubles. Not worth dismantling your team for this chip though.

I just cant think of a situation in a DGW that would have more than 7 chances for clean sheets in defence and more than 8 chances for attacking points. Would need to have a fair few playing a double with both being great fixtures.

That would use a lot of funds to upgrade Kun. Also as I'm playing 3-5-2 . So maybe defense should be priority?

Ighalo isn't fixture proof. I would only play Ighalo when he has "easy" fixtures. Like this week, Ighalo has (MUN). Albrighton has (new)

Delli Alli, Sinclair, Gil, Gosling, Watson and Surman are all probably better than him. Even Lanzini for 0.3 more.

Just because he plays in the best attacking team in the league doesn't make him a good option

I still don't get the Alli appeal. Isn't he a rotation threat and plays Dm alongside Diet? He has no attacking threat. I remember 2 of his assists came from Eriksen free kicks.

Also, there is no way albrighton is worse then those option (apart from lanzini) he is on set peices and has been a bit unlucky. I still rank Lanzini higher then him. But he does not rotate with Ighalo and costs a bit more.

I'm really amazed by the number of times Deulofeu has been mentioned on this place as a Payet replacement.

I was just going through his stats, and he has created very few chances, more like a case of being lucky with his returns. Also, given that Kone is pretty much establishing himself how on one of the wings, the competition for the other wing is just incredibly immense. Mirallas, Naismith, Osman, Cleverley, a returning Pienaar maybe...

It is a classic case of too little for 4th mid, too much for 5th mid. I'd argue Lingard is a better option irrespective of the price.

Agree with your points on Delofeu. The only thing I would add in his defence is that his delivery is high quality and thus I would expect a higher return from fewer crosses compared to say Aaron Lennon-who funnily enough is further competition!

But he's a dreadful pick imo.

      Payet > Lanzini
      Mane > Yaya(?)
      Pelle > Aguero

These are the transfers. I've already used my FT this week.

        Would keep Mane this week.
Pelle--->Aguero is also unnecessary, imo - especially, this week.

Payet---->Lanzini is OK. Prefer Ozil, is possible, somehow, otherwise then Deulofeu, imo.

Who else is unsure of which direction to take their fantasy team in? I'm so uncertain about the formation and balance of my side. Aguero is the clincher here. I feel as if I can't sell Payet yet because who I buy is directly linked to whether Aguero is fit for the Liverpool match. I could hold off for one week and keep Pelle for Stoke or I could look to upgrade Ighalo perhaps. Its a bit of a difficult one and I've let a few price changes go without spending either of my 2FT's. Is waiting still the best course of action do you think?

I would make a plan. Either you go for getting Aguero and do transfer to make that happen, or making the route w/o Aguero. Might cost you -4 later on to get him, but if there's one player justifying taking a hit it is Aguero surely.

My plan is to get Aguero but I could wait a week or two as well. In some ways Payet's injury is a couple of weeks early if you get what I mean.

Yeah I do. I would be in the same spot if it weren't for my plan to play the bench boost the upcoming GW, which means I need to get a solid mid (Willian or Bolasie).

See I'm just so unexcited about the mids in that price range. My side is geared towards getting someone in that price range but I'm not happy about it. I guess I'm just a little miffed as to who I can rely on as a Payet replacement bearing in mind I need to find about 2m from his sale or I simply don't get Aguero yet.

    3. SonOfSteven

      What I'm thinking:

I did Pelle to Lukaku and got Kane, Vardy and Lukaku. I'm happy with all these three, and my plan is to stick with that until one gets injuried or suspended. Aguero is so expensive and I want to keep most of my mids (Even though Sanchez to Ozil might fund getting Aguero alonside with a dirty cheap 5th mid)

Its a pretty nifty forward line. The way my team is set up is for a potential Aguero Vardy Ighalo lineup. I'm ok with that and I can make it happen very easily. This Payet injury is a little awkward though as he'd essentially need to be sold for a 5th mid at roughly 6.5m or below who can rotate with Ighalo.

Deulofeu or Barkley would be the perfect replacement in terms of price and balance of the side. I'm just a bit meh about their prospects though. Lukaku seems to be the main man.

Everton's fixtures are sweet - either will assist Lukaku no?
I've got De Bruyne, Sterling and Pelle - so if Ageuro not ready will wait till GW 14.
If ready then I'll take the 4 point hit for Pelle and Sterling.
Big transfers over the next 2 weeks - excited!

Maybe I'm being too cautions. Not wanting to spend 2FT's until I know whats going on eg Aguero's status. Not a terrible approach as its an international game week and there could be injuries which might cause a change in plan. Only thing is that its hitting me in the pocket as I ignore price changes 😕 the cost of information eh

      I did Payet>Surman because he'll be dropping a lot.

You are in exactly the same boat as me it seems. I think I need to sell Payet to a proper cheap 5th mid and upgrade Pelle and Ighalo as you are. The only thing is I like cheap mids with a bit of potential, Surman doesn't really have that.

Thought I'd get your thoughts on the use of stats in football .

    1) How do you feel about statistical football analysis as a whole? Does it provide value?
    2) When is it useful? When not?
    3) Do we have any idea how clubs actually use statistical analysis to value players? Set up tactics? 4) What can’t statistical analysis capture?

      1) Yes they do bring value but only when interpreted properly
      2) A bit vague, depends on what you are looking at really
      3) They probably look at opposition weaknesses and look at ways to exploit it eg slow pace of Terry/Cahill = start Walcott and use pace as much as possible.
      4) Anything tactical

      1. samaael

one of the guys from analytics fc has done number study on tactics. He worked out that teams that change tactical approach more aren't as effective as teams that largely keep the same tactic. I think his name was tom worville.

individual defensive effectiveness from a player is more of a analytics enigma

Chopping and changing tactics all the time wouldn't be effective I agree. I think a team can maintain a particular style but then put on the breaks when necessary etc. I think back to last season when Chelsea's strikers all got injured and they went all pragmatic and looked to keep clean sheets. At the switch of a button they went from a great attacking team to a great defensive team.

we have to understand the difference between raw stats and statistical analysis. raw stats are largely useless unless given context. Statistical analysis is an amazing tool. Concepts like total shots ratio, pdo, total shots on target ratio, expected goals, game states are incredible and slowly becoming mainstream.

It is believed most big clubs have stats departments but don't really use them effectively in a true analytical strength. There are some high profile examples where clubs are using them significiantly (Brentford, that club in Denmark). The Opta sports forum is coming up in Feb where clubs interested send reps and amateur analysts present proposals. Very interesting. I've been incorporating analytics into fantasy for awhile.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 6 months ago

      1) We're still in early early days, think Paul DePodesta only just being hired in Baseball. Yes it does provide value when used sensibly.
      2) Initial phases of scouting and valuing players.
      3) Varies club to club, Midtjylland and Brentford are publicly showing themselves to be relatively advanced. Man City and Arsenal are definitely above and beyond though behind closed doors (e.g. StatDNA). Tactics in specific cases maybe. Think Barcelona taking short corners, Mourinho teams conceding a relatively large number of corners for number of attacks faced, Atelti not having a man on the post. Maybe this is a result of numerical analysis, maybe its just coaches having a good sense of the game.

      4) Lots and lots and lots *at the moment* postioning, defensive pressure etc

yeah paul riley has worked out expected goals and keepers' underperformance and overperformance. it is a terrific study. I dont have the website on hand.

I think with defenders, it is difficult to say a defender is better than another defender because of stats. It is the Paolo Maldini effect.

Fair point Bald, I've been hearing more of this 'StatNA', but it seems so under wraps. The only time I've heard about it in the mainstream was in a guardian article a few years ago.

Ah yes, Barcelona's switch to building up from short corners, & goal kicks was always interesting (due to propensity to lose aerial duels perhaps?). Good to see it's had a big influence on other teams.
