The Digest – Gameweek 13

Roberto Firmino announces himself to Fantasy managers as Liverpool sweep aside City at the Etihad. Everton continue to take full advantage of their favourable schedule, whilst Sergio Aguero’s case for inclusion is dampened by a number of in-form frontmen.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Liverpool’s stunning 4-1 triumph at the Etihad has belatedly brought Roberto Firmino onto our radars.

Afforded just three starts in Brendan Rodgers’ eight matches in charge, the Brazilian had failed to justify the hefty £28m transfer fee that the Reds handed to Hoffenheim last summer. Indeed, Firmino’s assist in the Reds’ win at Chelsea – his first start under Jurgen Klopp – was his first attacking points of the season.

Handed a central role in Liverpool’s front three on Saturday evening, we finally saw flashes of the talent that served up 23 goals and 21 assists in his final two seasons in the Bundesliga. Firmino’s understanding and link-up play with Philippe Coutinho cut City apart time and again, and although Klopp was able to name both Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge on the bench at City, Firmino looks undroppable on this sort of form.

Sitting in just 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams to Coutinho’s 20%, Firmino seems a ready-made differential with the fixtures to flourish as the Merseysiders gain momentum under Klopp. Up next, the Reds go head-to-head with Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom, Watford, Leicester and Sunderland in the next six, affording the Brazilian the chance to show just why Liverpool were prepared to splash the cash.

The Team

An emphatic home win over Aston Villa took Everton’s tally to ten goals in their last two Goodison outings as Roberto Martinez’ side racked up the Fantasy points.

The 4-0 victory highlighted the options from back to front in Roberto Martinez’ side. Seamus Coleman delivered a ten-point return – his second double-figure haul of the season – as the hosts chalked up a first shut-out in seven attempts. Whilst the in-form Gerard Deulofeu had an off-day, Ross Barkley delivered two goals and an assist for his 24% owners – priced at 6.9, he’s now level with Alexis Sanchez on 72 points.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku continues to shrug off the inconsistency that has blighted him in previous years. The big Belgian’s brace means he’s now netted in three successive league outings – indeed, he’s blanked just twice in the last seven in a run that has served up seven strikes, three assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Despite the return of Sergio Aguero, Lukaku is the number one transfer target in FPL right now, with over 125,00 managers snapping him up since the weekend. It’s no surprise to see that Barkley leads the way for midfielders (108,000+) ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth. With Palace, Norwich, Leicester, Norwich and Stoke to follow the Dean Court clash, Martinez’ men certainly have the schedule on side to continue their weekend showing.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s return from injury was greeted with much fanfare last week but, in spite of netting against Liverpool, the City forward was somewhat overshadowed in the race for our attentions up front.

The aforementioned Lukaku’s brace was equalled by Harry Kane, whose recent renaissance continued at home to West Ham as he took his tally to seven goals in the last four Gameweeks. Similar to Lukaku, Kane also a very kind schedule ahead that heightens his appeal – over the next 12 rounds of fixtures, Tottenham play a top-six side just once.

Then there’s Jamie Vardy to consider. The Leicester striker has now scored in ten successive league appearances and although he’s risen in price to 7.4, he still offers outstanding value. Granted, the Foxes’ schedule is somewhat disconcerting (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI) over the next six Gameweeks, though it’s worth noting that Claudio Ranieri’s side have fared well against some of the top sides. Leicester have played four of the current top eight and scored twice against Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton and once against Spurs.

Whilst there’s no denying Aguero’s standing as the most explosive captaincy contender in the top flight, the form and fixtures offered by Lukaku and Kane is making a convincing case for those who are somewhat reluctant rip up their squads to accommodate the Argentine.

Given that City have scored just three times in the last four Gameweeks, their downturn in form, allied with Manuel Pellegrini’s need to manage Aguero’s minutes for fear of another relapse, is starting to convince some Fantasy managers that going without the 13.1-priced striker over a hectic festive period could be a very viable tactic.

City is bound to bounce back, with style, for this forthcoming gameweek. The below stats should be very useful:

    12-04-15
    United 4 : 2 City. The next game City 2 : 0 West Ham (6 win in a row)

    01-08-15
    VfB Stuttgart 4 : 2 City . The next game West Brom 0 : 3 City (5 win in a row)

    19-09-15
    City 1 : 2 West Ham. The next game Sunderland 1 : 4 City

    26-09-15
    Spurs 4 : 1 City. The next game City 6 : 1 Newcastle

If people keep on seliing KDB, he might turn out to be a bandwagon for this gameweek.

Already have Kane and Lukaku and just can't bring myself to dismantle my team just to fit in Kun. Instead I'll use my FT over the next 3 weeks to get into a position where I can bring in Kun if he's hitting some form and getting the minutes

It's relevant because they aren't up to standard of a usual team at the top of the Premier League.

Of course it's not their fault, they've done well but they won't be competing for 1st or 4th come end of the season.

And I expected all of the replies from people who might be blind that there is life outside of the PL, and I'm not so naive to think that we would have 19 clean sheets in the PL should we go up. But for budget defenders, I'd certainly fancy us to keep it solid against the lesser teams.

          You're in the minority 🙂

My point is that teams who are solid in the Championship generally do quite well defensively in the PL too. The likes of Hull and Stoke, for example, who are built on solid foundations, and who all offered great defensive value in FPL.

Perhaps it depends on how the team sets up. A team can be attacking, but have a good defensive record, but I know that we, like Hull and Stoke, built a team from the back.

Its not really that. Every season I see some hotly tipped newly promoted defenders who should keep out "lesser" sides. But I think that underestimates the difficulty of the PL. Unless they have a very defensive mind set all the way through the Championship (as in the park the bus Pulis sort of stuff) I'm never convinced until we get a bit into the season.

Fwiw, I do hope Boro come up.

And I think that's the most important thing.

Look at someone like Bournemouth. All out attack, which is admirable and it got them where they are but they are stuttering and in serious trouble of relegation (fair enough injuries haven't helped). While the swashbuckling assault on the PL by newcomers is always an exciting prospect, I tend to prefer teams that understand their limitations, and rely heavily on a solid base (at least early days).

a few years ago I had Turnbull/Jones as my 4.0/4.0 gk combo for half the season. It was the season they got relegated and it didn't turn out so well. Shame - as I thought I was a genius who had found a cheat in the game when I picked it!

I think they would struggle, the EPL teams 4th-20th are far better, wealthier and tougher than their La Liga counterparts. Barcelona win an awful lot of league games barely breaking a sweat, the EPL would wear them down by around season's March.

He means physically...its an interesting thought as la liga is far more technical but bpl much more physical and barca would take some getting used to

I think they'd be favourites to win it, but it'd be by no means assured. You see an awful lot of top class players coming to the EPL tearing it up early on and by the new year they're exhausted, it's a far more physically demanding league than Spain. Like how would Barca ope playing 7 tough matches in December when they're used to a winter break - they'd drop plenty of points. They're also better protected during champion's league weeks compared to the big English clubs.

Suarez single handedly carried Liverpool to an ALMOST PL title and he's the 3rd best forward at Barcelona.

I see your physical point, but I think they wouldn't need to break much of a sweat to break down the PL teams.

Suarez is a terrible example for you to use, he used to be a running joke on this forum during his first full season at Pool he'd miss several sitters every single match
His last 2 seasons were obviously brilliant but it took him ages to master the EPL.

      An honest remark.

Spanish players playing in minus temperatures, up in Stoke, with shawcross steaming through through the back of you. I don't think they'd be up for 90 minutes of that.

Then again that doesn't mean any of our teams would beat Barcelona if we were in the spanish league. No team can play a pressing game in those temperatures for a full match. Take away the physicality only a few teams would be technical enough to beat Barcelona

    Kane Aguero Ayoze

Ayoze, KDB, Kolarov ---> Lukaku, Firminho, Moreno for -12? Life is one! This changes wil good for more fixture 😉

if you bought kane and lukaku a month ago it would have been due to fixtures, now they're in great form. fixtures get you ahead of the curve, form gets you on the curve.
what i would concede however is form is easier to get right, backing someone to maintain something rather than start something.

vibe i get on here over the past couple of seasons is form has overtaken by a long way. i'll always be a fixtures apologist. class and fixtures is the perfect combo imo

Someone mentioned this the other day that form tends to coincide with fixtures. You'll always get the Aguero's who score past everyone but usually the two go hand-in-hand.

We're about to find out anyway with players like Ighalo, Mahrez and Vardy.

I want to get rid of Pelle, but can't afford Aguero/Costa. I already have Kane and Lukaku, just sold Vardy. Therefore, i'm looking at Giroud or Benteke. My plan was always to get Benteke in this week, but i'm a bit worried about whether he'll actually be a starter. Anyone know chances of Tekkers starting?

rested vs City but fancy him to start home games

we've got Sturridge and Hendo due back though so we wont know Klopps best XI for a month or so, possibly a few weeks into new year.

no he doesn't. He's pretty much the only striker capable of a goal a game (which would be enough). I don't count Vardy's current streak because this is the first time he has been prolific in his career (and he's already 28)

He doesn't have to score 5 to justify a hit and just because he had a tough run earlier in the season does not mean he is suddenly an inconsistent player that only gets occasional hauls

I'm taking the hit for my own sanity.
I don't want to spend rest of the season hiding behind the sofa when City on MOTD.
At some point the remote would go straight through the TV.
And you'll know that you've only got yourself to blame for the situation your in.

I think in that situation it's the keepers job to properly communicate since he can see what's going on behind Dann. Hennessy didn't communicate properly, and Palace have 2 other keepers who can come in and take his job, so I'm fully expecting rotation.

In the Classic Leagues table when you filter by month, shouldn't that include the total scores for the month with points hits taken off?
