Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Our Tightrope walkers were on their best behaviour over the weekend, with no new suspensions to report on so far in Gameweek 16. Indeed, the last 19 Premier League matches have failed to see anyone topple off, after last week also passed without incident.

There are now 23 players sitting just a single booking short of a one-match ban. Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures produced just two new entries – Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was cautioned for a tackle on Watford midfielder Ben Watson during the Black Cats’ 1-0 home loss yesterday. Newcastle’s match-winner Ayoze Perez also accrued his fourth booking of the season after a late challenge on Jan Vertonghen in this afternoon’s 2-1 victory at the Lane.

Steve McClaren’s men now supply the Tightrope with three players – more than any other side – as Perez joins Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote on the naughty step.

There’s still time for a couple of protagonists to topple, though. Leicester’s Robert Huth and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the men in question ahead of tomorrow evening’s match at the King Power, though the latter’s chances of taking part remain in question, bearing in mind that he’s failed to start the previous two matches.

With three more Gameweeks still to navigate until the limit is increased from five cautions to ten on New Year’s Day, there are, in theory, as many as 144 players still at risk of the Tightrope. West Brom are the club most affected, as they have ten players with at least two yellows to their name. Liverpool and United, meanwhile, have just four players in a similar situation.

Cautions for Tom Carroll and Danny Rose means that Tottenham remain at the summit for yellow cards accrued – Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been booked a total of 37 times in top-flight fixtures. West Brom (34), Liverpool (33), Newcastle (32) and Sunderland (31) are the next culpable, though in contrast, Arsenal have been the best behaved, with just 16 league bookings.

In terms of overall yellows, Stoke’s Erik Pieters and Newcastle’s Jack Colback now joined Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey at the summit with seven yellows apiece. Colback has now extended his record as the most booked player since the start of last season – he leads second-placed Lee Cattermole by 19 cautions to 17. That trio could yet fall foul of the ten card-limit in the current calendar year, then, should they be booked in their trio of remaining 2015 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp has defended the tackle by Craig Gardner that led to Dejan Lovren being stretchered off with a knee problem at Anfield:

“He played the ball, a millisecond before he hit Dejan. It was like the whole game: on the edge of everything. But he played the ball.”

Tony Pulis, meanwhile, went on the offensive and claimed the hosts were far more culpable:

“The two worst challenges in the game are James Milner’s challenge on Gardner and Martin Skrtel’s challenge on Salomon Rondon. Gardner has played the ball. Skrtel has gone right over the ball.”

Man United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only player currently unavailable due to suspension. The midfielder was retrospectively slapped with a three-match ban in midweek following an elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid in the Gameweek 15 goalless draw at Old Trafford. Having sat out yesterday’s loss to Bournemouth, Schweinsteiger will also miss the upcoming league encounters with Norwich and Stoke.

Is it worth spending money and transfers on defense this season? It all feels too random for any recurring patterns to appear. Better off spending it on midfield and attackers?

used my FT for the week already on VvD > Simpson so now have a tasty 3m in the bank. just a little more deadwood to move.

    .......................Butland
    .....Alderweireld - Bellerin - Kolarov
    Mahrez - De Bruyne - Hazard(c) - Ozil
    .........Kane - Lukaku(v) - Vardy

    McCarthy; Sinclair, Simpson, Richards

Evening. My season has been nothing short of an abomination so I have decided to donate it to VORP.

I was struck last week by the fact that if I had started GW15, I could have afforded the top fifteen scorers in FPL for 99.9m -- a full squad of the top two GKs, the top five Defs, top five Mids, top three Fwds. Instead of going the full casual and just doing that, I decided to pick the top fifteen in terms of points per game that I could within my own budget, a measly 103m.

I posted a few articles in August about value over replacement players by looking at PPG per million spent and trying to determine for each extra 0.5m I spent above the baseline, how many more points I might earn. So I have just taken a 28 point hit and drafted in a lineup of high value players in terms of PPG.

    Butland Myhill
    Kolarov Toby Dann Wollscheid Simpson
    Mahrez Ozil KDB Wijinaldum Henderson
    Lukaku Ighalo Giroud

KDB will be a placeholder until Aguero returns since I won't own Vardy, and I didn't want to double up on Defs or get rid of Myhill for a hit, but otherwise this is the best healthy squad I could get. The fact it took me seven hits to get here is probably why I am ranked so poorly.

So now I will transfer in players every time they get healthy and/or break into the top ranked PPG players, and captain the overall best PPG player (Mahrez for awhile, it looks like). Will be interesting to see how long it takes me to make up rankings places from the 1.3M I am currently ranked with this 28 pointer.

    Gameweek transfers: 8

That happened a long time ago. Eight of the last ten GWs I have had a rank of 1.75M or worse. 80% of the time in the bottom half of the entire game.

He was the hardest omission, but I might do KDB and Giroud to Ramsey and Aguero if/when the stats allow.

Thinking of Zouma as a defensive differential for the next couple of weeks

1- Is Kolarov nailed & just rested for that week? Kolarov > Zouma
    2- Is Zouma nailed?
    3- Zouma or a spurs defender ?

1 - He will be roated imo
      2 - Yes
3 - This season is weird and I don't trust either teams backline. Zouma has the better short term fixtures, but I'd rather go with Toby or Rose

So looking at the 3 chips. Ive yet to use any? Obviously better to use triple capt and bench boost on DGW's. I also think AOA would be best used during a DGW. Will there be enough decent DGW's to use all 3 chips on separate GW's..

This week is probably the first time I have had 5 strong midfield options so an considering using it this week, also my defenders I don't really fancy for cleansheets this week.

    Butland
    Bellerin Coleman (Kompany, Moreno, Simpson)
    Mahrez Ramsey Ozil KDB Deulofeu
    Vardy Lukaku Kane

I am DONE with Kane as a captain choice. Done. Finito. Out. Off. Which of course guarantees a brace next gameweek. Don't care. Pretty much everything else has been okay, thank god- but my captain selection has been absolutely pants, excepting that week when Kun ran riot with five. Okay, feeling better now thank you all for listening to me whine.

It's probably been mentioned round here but it was very odd (and frustrating as a Kane captainer) that Kane was dropping a little deep to get the ball when Spurs were in possession.

I haven't really seen him do that before.

It's odd seeing him going from having shots galore in recent games (e.g. against West Ham) to not even having a sniff against Newcastle 🙁
