Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Our Tightrope walkers were on their best behaviour over the weekend, with no new suspensions to report on so far in Gameweek 16. Indeed, the last 19 Premier League matches have failed to see anyone topple off, after last week also passed without incident.

There are now 23 players sitting just a single booking short of a one-match ban. Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures produced just two new entries – Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was cautioned for a tackle on Watford midfielder Ben Watson during the Black Cats’ 1-0 home loss yesterday. Newcastle’s match-winner Ayoze Perez also accrued his fourth booking of the season after a late challenge on Jan Vertonghen in this afternoon’s 2-1 victory at the Lane.

Steve McClaren’s men now supply the Tightrope with three players – more than any other side – as Perez joins Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote on the naughty step.

There’s still time for a couple of protagonists to topple, though. Leicester’s Robert Huth and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the men in question ahead of tomorrow evening’s match at the King Power, though the latter’s chances of taking part remain in question, bearing in mind that he’s failed to start the previous two matches.

With three more Gameweeks still to navigate until the limit is increased from five cautions to ten on New Year’s Day, there are, in theory, as many as 144 players still at risk of the Tightrope. West Brom are the club most affected, as they have ten players with at least two yellows to their name. Liverpool and United, meanwhile, have just four players in a similar situation.

Cautions for Tom Carroll and Danny Rose means that Tottenham remain at the summit for yellow cards accrued – Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been booked a total of 37 times in top-flight fixtures. West Brom (34), Liverpool (33), Newcastle (32) and Sunderland (31) are the next culpable, though in contrast, Arsenal have been the best behaved, with just 16 league bookings.

In terms of overall yellows, Stoke’s Erik Pieters and Newcastle’s Jack Colback now joined Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey at the summit with seven yellows apiece. Colback has now extended his record as the most booked player since the start of last season – he leads second-placed Lee Cattermole by 19 cautions to 17. That trio could yet fall foul of the ten card-limit in the current calendar year, then, should they be booked in their trio of remaining 2015 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp has defended the tackle by Craig Gardner that led to Dejan Lovren being stretchered off with a knee problem at Anfield:

“He played the ball, a millisecond before he hit Dejan. It was like the whole game: on the edge of everything. But he played the ball.”

Tony Pulis, meanwhile, went on the offensive and claimed the hosts were far more culpable:

“The two worst challenges in the game are James Milner’s challenge on Gardner and Martin Skrtel’s challenge on Salomon Rondon. Gardner has played the ball. Skrtel has gone right over the ball.”

Man United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only player currently unavailable due to suspension. The midfielder was retrospectively slapped with a three-match ban in midweek following an elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid in the Gameweek 15 goalless draw at Old Trafford. Having sat out yesterday’s loss to Bournemouth, Schweinsteiger will also miss the upcoming league encounters with Norwich and Stoke.

Too ashamed to to post a score. Looking ahead-

    Butland/ McCarthy
    Kolorov/ Richards/ Rose/ Targett/ Moreno
    Ozil/ KDB/ Mahrez/ Hazard/ Stanislas
    Lukaku/ Vardy/ Kane

    1FT 3.9M ITB

Target to Olsson? Gets a playing player and leaves my Kane to Aguero cash.

Willing to listen to any other options. Thanks

I think you're decided but here's my pitch:

      - Southampton and Norwich in next two, they are both atrocious at the back
      - I remember a very similar situation where I brought KDB in and sold him due to not performing in 1-2 GWs and not having stats, and well yea… you know what happens next.

Not much to go on but I can't bother wasting 4 points on him right now.

They can't make it too complicated or the masses who like to pick on names or gut feeling will turn away. I agree with you but the chips this year show they're pandering to the great unwashed, not the fpl geeks like us.

maybe letting you switch your captain once in a gameweek to someone who hasn't played yet could alleviate that. in fact it would attract more casuals who would be disheartened less often by a bad gameweek.

They won't take anything from ufpl. That's their potential cash cow. A few seasons perfecting then huge marketing. Dfs is begging for a big player to come in the UK market

I think a good rule would be that people choose 2 potential captains each week and whichever of those score higher.. then only that player gets double points!

    Toby, Moreno, Kolarov, Ward, Francis
    KDB, Ozil, Hazard, Mahrez, Westwood

Yeah, if I'd gone for Lukaku Id be into the mid 50s which would be a good score all considered.

Still...we picked Kane with no form so we shouldn't be surprised. 4 points in 3 GWs now. What to do...

        Same here.

Typical right, plays a team with an incredibly leaky defence and can't score. Fair play to Newcastle though. Maybe we shouldn't of underestimated them after Liverpool

I dunno. I'm not sure Newcastle were all that good, Spurs just didn't seem to have the quality to knit much together. They just seemed to be lacking a bit of precision. I mean Rose was murdering Janmaat but his crossing wasn't quite there.

Ah ok. Didn't watch the match, watched LFC instead.

Good to hear Rose played well though, besides his 0 points. I was thinking about getting rid.

    Morning Dz, thoughts here please

    Bultand
    Monreal, Dann, Evans
    Silva, Ramsey, Ozil, Mahrez
    Kane, Lukaku, Ighalo

    Schmeichel, Francis, Van Dijk, Anya

    1FT, 5.6m

Save or VVD out? I'm more inclined to save as i don't see much appeal in the options to transfer in to defence.

Probably a save fr the reasons you stated

Save imo. I'd be tempted to play VVD over Dann too

cheers, wouldn't it make more sense to play over Evans? Wba despite pulis factor have been terrible at the back and Bournemouth playing with confidence and attacking form. Dann and VVD have attacking threat, Evans' is minimal

That's a good point. WBA clean sheet never out of the question though.

I think there are some decent options out there. Zouma and Mike Smalling if fit. Can't blame you for keeping though. Your defence is ok as is.

Captain hauls since the start of the season.
Way too many 4's in here.
2 great weeks and the rest have been just poor!!
    GW 16- 4, 2, 6, 26 (ok great), 4, 4, 4, 4, 50 (amazing), 10, 10, 6, 4, 4, 4, 2-

    8*4pts
    2*2pts
    2*6pts
    2*10pts
    1*26pts
    1*50pts

    Average= 9pts in total.
    Need to be doing better!!
2 GW's saved me from serious embarrassment.

Would love to know how these compare to the guys doing really well.

      Captain choices from me:
If taking a punt you must really FEEL it coming.
Consistent players are the best, hence Mahrez, Vardy and Ozil. Lately also Lukaku. Opposition is maybe the most important factor. Bad form=good, bad and worsining=real good. As for example: Newcastle played much more solid last week, no reason for them not to build on that. I avoided Kane based on that I would be surprised if Spurs scored more than two. On the other hand, Ozil performs week in and week out and facing a team struggling. Easy decision IMO.

I think I'm fairly good at finding good options, only missed 7/16 and four of those were Aguero's blanks:
      GW16-GW1
      12, 12, 12, 26, 4 (Mahrez), 16, 4 (Sanchez), 4 (Mane), 50, 4 (Aguero), 10, 2 (Aguero), 4 (Aguero), 4 (Aguero), 18, 10

Hendo is a good pick. I'm also debating getting him in although already have Coutinho so not sure I want to double up of Liverpool mids.

Like the look of Hendo too but so many options in midfield now..
Ozil, Mahrez, KDB, Hazard my main 4 atm.
        Who would he replace..

          Same problem.

I've got Mahrez, KDB, Ozil, Coutinho, Wanyama.

I'm wondering whether it's worth upgrading the 5th mid through the Xmas period.

    Kolorov owners-

    A. Glass half full. Hes had his rest and Man C were not great without him
    B. Glass half empty. He is now an expensive rotation risk.

A- Maybe just because I had Ward coming in for him this week.
I am going to keep for now anyway.. Hoping my supersubs- Ward/er Francis are ready to jump in if he is rotated more.

Yeah fair enough. I think City have fallen off the cliff defensively wise though, especially without Kompany. So even if he does play I don't think he's a great option, you'll need to rely on attacking returns

      B. Rotation risk is too high for a player in the premium price bracket.

      B. And even if he plays, City are going to concede anyway (unless Kompany is back)

More forward position than Toby, but I prefer Toby. Less likely to get a card, more likely for BAPS
