Spot the Differential – Gameweek 20

Our first trio of overlooked Fantasy options for 2016 has us turn to the defence for something different as Swansea’s bonus-bagging skipper into contention, along with a prime Fantasy asset who may just be ridding himself of personal demons to become worthy of consideration once again. We round things off with a Hammer’s battering ram scrapping for his starting role as the Upton Park treatment room begins to empty.

Ashley Williams

Swansea City failed to register a single clean sheet during Garry Monk’s final 10 matches at the helm, but they’ve only conceded in one fixture since Alan Curtis assumed the role of caretaker manager. The Swans have strung together three successive shut-outs, with Ashley Williams (4.8) scooping the maximum bonus points in each match-up. In fact, the Wales international has missed out on just one bonus point across Swansea’s five clean sheets this term and ranks third among all defenders for BPS score (412). Furthermore, Williams is ranked first for blocks (28), second for clearances (156) and third for Interceptions (52) amongst defenders this season, highlighting his key contribution for the Liberty outfit.

Delving deeper into Swansea’s underlying defensive stats over the past four Gameweeks suggests they’re a more disciplined outfit under Curtis. No team surrendered fewer big chances (two) across that stretch, while they ranked in the bottom seven for shots inside the box conceded (27) and bottom eight for shots outside the box conceded (16).

Next on the agenda for Swansea is a trip to Manchester United, followed by a home encounter against Sunderland. Their shut-out aspirations are bolstered by the fact that these two clubs ranked joint-bottom for goals (two) over the last four Gameweeks. Moreover, only three sides have recorded fewer shots on target (18) than the Red Devils since Gameweek 14, boosting Williams’ prospects of further points returns.

Branislav Ivanovic

While it would be folly to buy into the Guus Hiddink revolution just yet, there are signs that the Dutchman is already reviving fortunes and therefore their cast of Fantasy assets.

Ivanovic was once a crown jewel for Fantasy Football managers – a defender that combined the potential to claim clean sheets, alongside a set-piece goal threat and the propensity to raid forward and supply crosses. It was a heady combination.

Damaged by Chelsea’s alarming slide and an array of quite pitiful individual displays under Jose Mourinho, it will take time for us to come around to the idea of considering Ivanovic again. However, with under 8% ownership, early adopters may just be giving themselves the opportunity to bag a handy differential.

Since Hiddink’s arrival, Chelsea have conceded fewer goal attempts per match, while Ivanovic has upped his touches in the box and his rate of creating chances for others. The early indications are that the Serb could edge his way back into our affections.

Fixtures against a Crystal Palace (who have failed to score in their last two outings) and West Brom (who have scored just six goals in nine away from home) compound his short-term appeal.

Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio (5.2) had to bide his time following a summer switch from Nottingham Forest, but – in the wake of West Ham United’s injury crisis – the English wide man has been afforded four consecutive league starts. Having been involved (one goal, two assists) in all three of West Ham’s goals across the last four Gameweeks, Antonio should retain his starting berth irrespective of Victor Moses’ potential return this weekend.

Offering a glimpse of the form that saw him bag 14 goals in the Championship last season, Antonio placed joint-seventh for attempts (10) and fourth for shots inside the box (seven) among all midfielders over the previous four Gameweeks. Furthermore, Gerard Deulofeu was the only midfielder that carded more penalty-box touches (20) than Antonino (19), emphasising his willingness to foray forward.

West Ham’s goals have dried up of late (three in five), but Manuel Lanzini returned from injury earlier in the week and Dimitri Payet could feature against Liverpool, furnishing the Irons with some much-needed creative spark at the Boelyn Ground. Although the Reds secured clean sheets in their previous two outings, Slaven Bilic’s charges will draw heart from their opponent’s recent road defeats at the hands of Watford (3-0) and Newcastle United (2-0).

    Butland
    Clyne Wollscheid Dann Walker Targett
    Arnautovic KDB Mahrez Ozil Deulofeu
    Vardy Giroud Lukaku

    1) Who to bench from Clyne (whu)/Dann (CHE)/ Walker (eve)
    2) Who to bench in mid KDB/Deulofeu (I'm inclined towards benching KDB)
    3) Captain Giroud/Mahrez/Vardy?

Your help would be much appreciated, can't decide at all haha.

Thinking about Kolarov to Ashley Williams.

Other defenders are Dann, Bellerin, Dawson, Moreno. Happy with my front 8, can use a little cash in case I want to bring in Kun,

Any thoughts almost not longer dead zone?

I was tempted but I switched Zouma instead of Kolarov in the end. Just think that despite the rotation risk, Kolarov's high ownership could hurt non owners when city hit overdrive in the second half of the season

Might put tenner for any time goal scorer.

    Danies - 16/1 - 17.00 (Bou pen taker)

Surprisingly this bookie has only 7/1 - 8.00 odds for Dawson to score

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 20

This was posted really late, apologies. Depending on how many join, I may have to cancel the game week. Similarly GW19 results will come shortly.

    Sorry, life has been busy!

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks (there is no limit on team value) but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must comply with FPL formation rules and be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Saturday 2nd January, 11.45am.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
Top 4% of the population will rank "second" and score 2 points.
Top 10% of the population will rank "third" and score 1 point.

There is also a bonus point which everyone is eligible for. Essentially, if you score higher than FFS' Scout Picks AND Differential Picks (i.e. 14 players), you will be awarded with a bonus point regardless of whether you were in the top 3 scoring positions or not.

    ****** SEASON RANKINGS ******

    1st - Dusan Citizen (16pts)
    2nd - IanP1970, Balders (13pts)

Welcome to the game, and good luck.

Just a quick one guys and gals, how to solve a problem like KdB?

Got Alli on my bench, is it worth playing Alli ahead of KdB for this week as TOT play the porous Everton at Goodison?

Thoughts .... Is KdB due a big away points haul? Or should I bench him and hope he blanks with his high ownership???

    1. Hakuna Juan Mata
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

As much as I would love to bench KDB, his high ownership will hurt tremendously if he has a big haul

Thats the risk, but looking at his away points history he has never got more than 5 away on usually only hauls 2 or 3 points.

      ps.. never ever bench KGB.

No, I am saving that for later in the season. I play in a H2H league at work and may require it nearer the end of the season. Why never bench KdB? I understand that logic at the Emirates but away? At solid Watford?

To me it's a no brainer. He plays for a team that creates so many chances you'd be silly to bench imo.

Avoid betting on Fulham! Very inconsistent and hard to predict how they'll play. Will want to impress new manager but SW had a couple of decent results over Xmas (despite losing 1-0 to Midd last time out).

If you really want to bet on this then maybe Ross McCormack to score anytime (around 6/4)

I'd be worried about Moreno, I really do think West Ham will at least score 1 today. William's for me a definite and I wouldn't be worried playing O'Shea against Villa in all honesty, they will play to not lose/concede.

Ha ha - Bellerin and Williams to start - and a toss-up between Moreno/Toby - I think Liverpool have the potential to keep a CS more against W'Ham than Tottenham against Everton.

          If that helps lol!

O'Shea would be a risk, only a 75% chance of playing, so forget him.

        Ozil
The problem is that I made it for deduction, I could have swapped KDB to Ozil directly with 1FT

Silva is better than Ramsey, and plays in a better position on a team more capable of a route. I have the same as you, except arnie is on my bench instead of ramsey
