Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

Every season this happens, every single season.

Step 1. A group of players perform consistently well for more than a couple of weeks.
Step 2. These players are bought en masse by 'casuals' and 'serious players' alike.
Step 3. The 'serious players' moan about there being a 'template'.
Step 4. 1 or more of the template players dry up and/or new players hit some form.
Step 5. Go to step 2.

Yeah, 'template' is pretty misleading a lot of the time too. There could be multiple RMTs that only share 4/5 players in common and all would be described as template:

          Myhill, Hennessey
          Alderweireld, Smalling, Moreno, Bertrand, Nyom
          Ozil, Mahrez, Barkley, KDB, Stanislas
          Vardy, Ighalo, Lukaku

          Butland, McCarthy
          Bellerin, Williams, Dann, Dawson, Rose
          Ozil, Mahrez, Ramsey, Alli, Walcott
          Vardy, Kane, Aguero

I bet both of those would be considered template despite only sharing 4 players. There's always enough variation to gain/lose ground on rivals.

I got 29 points this week and was shocked to see the average was 40!! How is that possible?

We all expected a downfall for Leicester, since they don't have the required depth of squad to rotate, which eventually will cost the players.
Since all template teams have both Mahrez and Vardy.. Who to sell?
Mahrez missing penalty and Vardy doubtfull will be weighed on..

but are we ready to take a hit on out TeamValue and sell Vardy?
Actual Value = 7.6 while my current selling is 6.9.

Vardy will probably miss 2 GW but isn't it a beneficial rest time for him, so he can get back stronger than the last 3 GW we saw? Even though the fixtures are not so green, he showed he can be fixture proof earlier this season.

There are 5 midfield slots and only 3 forward slots. And Ighalo, Lukaku and Kane are firing, not to mention Aguero and Costa may start soon. I'd say sell Vardy. Visually I'd say sell Vardy too.

Points over value. Get Kane/Ighalo for him if you don't have one of them and when Vardy hits the ground again, then you should bring him back without any doubts. His price could drop in the next 2 weeks to 7.2 at least so you won't lose so much money when getting him back 🙂

Mahrez is a hot pretender for Player of the Year award, so you should be careful when get decision like this. Okazaki and Ulloa now have their chances to prove themselves as Vardy replacements and even Kramaric is there too, so lack of Vardy upfront doesn't mean Leicester are weaker team now or Mahrez could stop scoring 😉

      Wonder who that is :/

I'd do it. Only decent thing about Moreno is his potential attacking returns, but seeing as we can't score there's no point

Getting rid of Moreno myself. Very disappointing. Don't know if you need a 6.9 defender though? Plenty value out there

        I mean't any defender up to 6.9.

I got Moreno quite recently as well 🙁 I did have him in my team for his CS against Leicester and Sunderland which was a bonus 😀

Ivanovic/Cresswell should replace him well if you want to spend more money on deffence

    1 FT , 2.4 in bank
    Ozil - Walcott - Mahrez - Alli - Barkley
    Lukaku - Kane - Giroud

    1)Barkley -> Payet
    2)Barkley -> Oscar/Willian
    3)Barkley->Payet / Mahrez -> Willian (-4)
    4)Barkley-> Payet / Lukaku -> Costa
    what do u think ?

      Yeah ,
West ham coming matches is ea sear than Everton's coming matches ,
Everton can score without Barkley ,
Payet is the Igalho of West ham , most of goals must get through him

Definitely. Everything will run through Payet.

Alright so i've changed the team up drastically, gone for differential as i am lacking in OR and in mini leagues.

    Butland Hennessey
    Nyom Alderweireld Cresswell Smith Koscielny
    Ozil Oscar Alli Payet Mahrez
    Aguero Costa Ighalo

I have WC active and 0.4ITB

Tips for transfers long term and short term or for right now? not too sure about oscar, many saying he is playing with luck? Pls help

I'd start tripling or doubling up at least on the defences of your choice. Clean sheets are hard enough to come by, might as well make up 6-10 points a week on your rivals who have only 1 of the popular defenses.

I have a reasonable template team but in doing so its very difficult to gain ground, currenly at 276K

Thinking of using my WC to mix things up a bit, any thoughts on the below? I know its still rather template but I dont see that many teams with Costs+Aguero.

    Butland/Schmeichel

    Bellerin/Dann/Alderweireld/Zouma/Moreno

    Ozil/Barclay/YYT/Mahrez/Alli

    Aguero/Costs/Ighalo

Toying with a WC draft...thoughts on this?

    Butland Rudd
    Azpi Vert Walker Williams Rangel
    KDB Ozil Payet Mahrez 4.3
    Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

Can't have em all but my main concerns are

    1) No Spurs attack
    2) No United defence (maybe a concern)
    3) KDB and Aguero might be too much but KDB > Sanchez can be done

Luka to Kane and then Kane to Luka after 2 weeks? Thats what I'm thinking if I WC.
Very different team I would say

Yea I could go that route but just know i'll be hopping on and off at the wrong times.

Very hard to break the front 7 template...and pretty much going semi-all in on a couple of defenses. Had enough of spreading my eggs.

If we want to improve rank, we have to attack now... Got to try something different. Sure about Swans double at back?

      Rangel nailed?

KDB + Aguero is fine imo.

      Lukaku still worth keeping?
