Spot the Differential – Gameweek 24

As the real life wheeling and dealing comes to a close on Deadline Day, we roll out a trio of overlooked alternatives for your Monday night consideration. Arsenal and Tottenham’s midfields supply us with a couple of options, whilst we also turn to West Ham’s wide man ahead of clashes with three of the bottom four in the next four rounds of fixtures.

Alexis Sanchez

Having completed his comeback from injury with a 34-minute run-out against Chelsea last Gameweek, Alexis Sanchez (10.9) reaffirmed his Fantasy potential with a goal and assist during the Gunners’ 2-1 FA Cup win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Although the Chilean failed to net in his previous six league starts, his capacity for explosive returns (six goals and 46 points in three outings from Gameweek 7-9) ensures that he’s the fourth-most transferred in midfielder (90,000+) this week, with many Kevin de Bruyne owners making a straight swap.

Taking the campaign as a whole, Sanchez still ranks top among Arsenal’s midfield contingent for attempts (57), shots inside the box (40), joint-top for shots on target (17) and top for penalty-box touches (112). Moreover, despite the fact he was sidelined for eight matches with a hamstring complaint, he still manages to sit second among all midfielders – behind Sadio Mane (46) – for shots inside box, while only Philippe Coutinho lays claim to a superior shot frequency (one every 19 minutes compared to 20.7).

In the wake of Arsenal’s two consecutive blanks, Sanchez – who sits in just 11% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides – is poised for a timely return to the starting XI for Southampton’s visit on Tuesday. Although the North Londoners came up short last time out at the Emirates, they’re the clear frontrunners with regards to big chances created on home turf (37), which bodes well for the Chilean’s attacking prospects.

Michail Antonio

In light of Dimitri Payet’s spellbinding displays since being discharged from the treatment room, it’s easy to overlook the excellent form of Michail Antonio (5.3). Since Gameweek 18, the  former Nottingham Forest winger – who’s valued 2.9 below his more illustrious, 8.2-priced teammate – has drawn a solitary blank in six appearances, notching two goals and five assists along the way.

Delving deeper into the statistics, Antonio ranked among the top 10 midfielders for attempts (nine) over the past four Gameweeks, while only four of his counterparts mustered more shots inside the box (seven). Despite clocking almost half the pitch time of Payet (780 to 1394 minutes), the robust winger has tallied one more shot inside the box (14) at a superior shot frequency (41.1 minutes to 49.8), furnishing us with an alluring budget route into the Hammers’ attack.

Considering that the Irons are about to embark on a superb quartet of fixtures (AVL, sou, nor, SUN), which includes a home tie against Sunderland in Gameweek 27 – at a time when Man City, Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle face a blank – the platform is set for Antonio to flourish.

Christian Eriksen

Scoring for the first time since a free-kick double against Swansea City in Gameweek 8, Christian Eriksen (8.4) bagged a brace at home to Sunderland a fortnight ago, before serving up an assist in Tottenham’s Hotspur’s 3-1 win at Crystal Palace. Were it not for the headline-grabbing exploits of Dele Alli, the Danish playmaker might well be attracting more interest on the Fantasy market ahead of a favourable pair of match-ups against Norwich and Watford.

Over the past four Gameweeks, Eriksen ranks joint-third among midfielders for attempts (13) and joint-top – with Alli – for accurate shots (seven). Taking the season as a whole, he places joint-third in terms of shots on target (21), underlining his influence in the final third. On the distribution front, no midfielder has racked up more key passes (19) since Gameweek 20, while he ranks third in that respect (65) this term.

Having tallied 13 more attempts (90) and seven more shots on target (31) than any team over the previous four Gameweeks, Spurs are well placed to punish a Norwich City outfit that ranks second for goals conceded (43) and top for big chances surrendered (57). Beyond that head-to-head, they’ll fancy their chances when Watford pay a visit, given that the Lilywhites have carded more shots on target (87) in home matches than the rest of the field.

    1. Do Ozil/Mahrez to Firmino/Ayew or save?
    2. Bench one of Ozil, Mahrez, Ighalo
    3. Bench Moreno or Bellerin?

Madness to consider Firmino for SUN and avl given I already have Lukaku/Kun/Moreno out in gw27?
Got 2FT and could easily sell him after that.

Hi All - any thoughts on the below - 0.3 ITB & 1FT

    Hennessey (Butland)
    Bellerin Dier (Francis, Moreno, VVD)
    Antonio Firmino Ozil Alli Mahrez
    Aguero(c) Kane Lukaku

Currently on AOA chip for this week - am nervous about not having payet this week though have Antonio & also thinking about Sanchez - what would you do? (thinking about taking Mahrez out next week anyhow due to schedule/stats)

    A) Save
    B) Payet for Ozil
    C) Payet for Mahrez, VVD for Targett (-4)
    d) Sanchez for Ozil, VVD for Targett (-4)

    Thanks!

As a Spurs fan my concern is that, whilst we're not conceding many goals, we're also not keeping many clean sheets. Amount of times we've conceded one random goal in a comfortable win is seriously frustrating! Even happened v Colchester at the weekend. If you have strong enough replacements I'd bench too

I don't think they'll improve at the back tbh. The emphasis will now go on attack due to the lack of goals.
IMO one of these 2 as a back up to say Butland works.

You can only use one chip at a time on a DGW though... I'm thinking of using the Bench Boost or all out attack for the DGW's and maximising players who will play twice...

Aguero against Sunderland seems a decent shout to my mind

AOA is a waste for a DGW if you ask me, why not use TC on Aguero for his first DGW then when the second one comes along which might feature more teams, use bench boost

@ Christina, HVT, Raging Bull and Timbo

I am of the opinion that KdB out is actually good for Silva. Navas and Sterling to start on the wings and practically pull the full backs with them, giving Silva more space to operate, something on which he thrives on. This is the only reason why I feel like having Silva. It'd be a gamble though.

Do we think Firmino is a good buy with Leicester this week over someone like Alexis/Silva.

I am a Silva owner and was considering transferring out as i was concerned KDB in the side doesn't help Silva's points prospects. I posted this several times on here last month. I'm keeping now KDB is injured. Score!!

City have not looked stylistically the same since KDB joined.

Still talking about fishy transfers and Stoke, there's something about that Imbula transfer too. Why did Stoke pay much over the last selling price for a guy who didn't fit in the first XI at his club? It seems just like overpaying. Wonder if there's a connection between Cartwright/Scholes and Doyen Sports? Hughes has at least before been represented by Joorabhcian, which is another thing, but that guy is pretty much freely consulting anybody nowadays, so could he be the connection to Doyen sports here too?

This is all just guessing, maybe Stoke actually just paid silly money to get the full ownership of his contract. But there's been so much of serious agent bs happening about Imbula, and I wonder whether he is fully Stoke's player now, or still half owned by a 3rd party? That would be illegal, but we _know_ that at Porto, 1/4 of his financial value belonged to a guy working at Doyen sports, and 1/4 to the Doyen sports. And if Imbula will just again be transferred for silly money next summer, so the agents can pocket more cash.

it could also be more simply answered by the fact that England has most of the money in football globally, so they should be expected to pay more when their clubs raid other clubs' players.

Still no reason to deliberately overpay for a player that the seller club doesn't want to keep.

And what I stated about the 3rd party ownership and dodgy agent dealings around Imbula, are facts:

Hopefully the Stoke transfer put an end to that, but it's not sure.

The other dodgy stuff is that Mendes is also involved in this, and he's representing the Belgium NT manager Marc Wilmots, and this connection was established by Doyen Sports employee D'Onofrio - from where the strange situation of Wilmots trying to call up Imbula to Belgium NT while he can't get fielded in his club side.

A lot of transfers are just money laundering. Nothing else.

Yep. Another reason to get rid of the transfer fees. It's all become a criminal business.

Well not sure how that would be working as well, then Messi if he gets mad can just pack up and leave and Barca gets nothing. Not sure how i would solve this issue honestly

He could, indeed. I don't see what's wrong with that. It's the free movement of workers, baby.

But maybe there would be reasons why the players would rather stay at their clubs, particularly as they would likely get more level. In any event, the FIFPro proposition in whole would probably rather decrease and particularly rationalise the movement of the youth players in particular, because there are rules that would prevent big clubs player hogging. Namely, the squad sizes would be restricted, loaning players would be prohibited and while contracts would be of indefinite duration there would be ~2 year prohibition of breaching of contract.

There is a lot of things that has to be considered first honestly. Im not sure thats fair for example. If you have a guy who was for example from 10 yrs old in Norwich and decides he wants to leave at 19 when he is a "super star" status or whatever, and ust leaves after Nor invested in him? Not sure how that would be fair.

There has to be some mechanic that would lower the money laundering part in football and make it more interesting. Mainly teams battling to bring in best players and keep them. Not sure what i would do and how i would go about it.

Well, you wouldn't have to buy anybody in his place either. Just sign somebody who wants to come, and be appealing enough for somebody to actually come.

I'm surprised people see so much wrong with this, while outside the sports world talents are moving abroad all the time without anybody paying a "transfer fee". Fair and square.

Just think of it: once they've brought that 19-year-old, for next 2 years that's one of their, say, 25 players. They can't have more. They can't loan anybody out. If he doesn't succeed and they buy a new one next summer, they'll have one big salary on their bench for the next year and play with one less guy, then he's free to go again. But wouldn't it rather be better for them to try and work with that guy, than to change the team every season by signing guys who were the hype of the _last_ season? I'd expect the really big clubs to only get the players at their peak age, and the smaller clubs like Norwich to be in full enjoyment of their talents in the young age - and without having to spend money on transfer fees, they'd be able to also attract players with both good salary and improved facilities.

I have to agree with some of the points. I do not see anything wrong, i personally would like a system in place that would be supporting both Big and small clubs alike and not the one with the most cash. But, through footballing history or any sport at this level, its always been about money.

Look at what league was dominant in football in last 20-30 years and which teams had the most success. The wealthiest teams. Juventus/Milan/Bayern/Barcelona/Real with the occasional "small" dog coming in and swooping the prize.

For example Champions league in its current format is very fun to watch, but it heavily favors big time teams. Back in the day, 1 winner of the domestic league played another and knocked them out. Thats how for example a smaller team can win the whole thing. Less games, more "exclusivity" more leagues that players would go to,etc. There is an upside and a downside for both coin sides honestly.

I fully agree with this, although I would say that no small dog has swooped the prize for a long time.

But take a look at your own words: "...its current format..." "...in last 20-30 years...". The CL system has evolved for the needs of the big clubs (mostly for the needs of the PL clubs, a fact that English fans who always blame UEFA for their every failure completely fail to recognise).

We know well that there was a time when a Nottingham or Reims or Cagliari could be at the top with loudly local boys. Of course, Real still bought their best away, but the plurality was greater, and players were not money slaves. i'm not saying it was perfect back then, but just that things can change. We don't have to have such a system, driven by the financial interests of the big clubs. FIFPro are trying to force UEFA to change its ways through the courts. They may lose the case, but I, personally, hope they'll succeed.

I absolutely agree with you. I do know this system was invented for the bigger clubs, so no NForest can come and win the whole thing, or teams like Red Star, take your pick. There has to be variation of the systems and i do believe

I hope for something that will shake it up and make it for the glory more than for the money. As i mentioned, not sure what exact system i would set in place, but i would bring the exclusivity back to CL and other competitions. So, other teams dont neglect Europa league since its the lesser competition and where "small" clubs dominate usually. Both of the cups would be of great value if there was a different system.

It's indeed one great thing to fix: CL back to the champions only, for the reasons you state. I loved the UEFA Cup days, even the Cup Winners Cup used to be cool and give some meaning for the domestic cups too.
