The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 27 – The Defence

With so many teams facing blanks in Gameweek 27 and 30, we’re placing a real emphasis on the next four rounds of fixtures for our updated Watchlist rankings. Three home fixtures in four sees Leicester pair Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Fuchs keep their places towards the top of the Watchlist, whilst Southampton duo Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk also remain among the leading options at the back after racking up six straight clean sheets.

GOALKEEPERS

Southampton’s in-form Fraser Forster keeps his spot as the top-rated goalkeeper, having racked up a sixth straight clean sheet in the 1-0 win at Swansea last time out. The upcoming schedule (CHE, bou, SUN, sto, LIV, lei) is fairly reasonable for Ronald Koeman’s side, particularly in the short term after Saturday’s tough match-up against Chelsea. The 5.0-priced England international should see his 3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continue to grow, then, although he has failed to pick up any save points in five of his last six appearances.

Stoke’s Jack Butland has, by comparison, been struggling for shut-outs of late, managing just one from his last eight appearances. He clings on to second spot with plum home fixtures against Aston Villa and Newcastle on the horizon, though, while the rest of the Potters’ fixture list over the coming period (che, SOT, wat, SWA) is fairly favourable, with four of their next six at the Britannia. The 5.2-valued keeper’s prospects would be further boosted if Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross is fit to start against Villa on Saturday, with the centre-half set to resume full training this week following a back problem.

Kasper Schmeichel is our third non-mover at the top of our ladder, with a very favourable fixture list (NOR, WBA, wat, NEW, cpl, SOT) making the Leicester stopper a strong option between the sticks. The Danish international has seen his price rise to 4.6 in FPL, but that still looks outstanding value given Claudio Ranieri’s men have kept clean sheets in five of their last eight. Fantasy managers may prefer to use one of their three Leicester slots on a defender with attacking potential, though, with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy likely to occupy the other two spots in our 15-man rosters.

Bournemouth’s nice run of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks (wat, SOT, new, SWA) ensures that Artur Boruc keeps his place towards the top of the Watchlist. The Cherries have failed to register a shut-out in their last four though, so while the former Celtic goalkeeper still offers solid value at 4.5 in FPL, there do look to be more appealing options for us to ponder over in goal.

Although Swansea face tough trips to Spurs and Arsenal over the next two Gameweeks, their subsequent schedule (NOR, bou, AVL) helps Lukasz Fabianski climb a few spots on the Watchlist. The 4.7-rated keeper has conceded exactly one goal in each of his last four outings, but clean sheets registered in home matches against West Ham, West Brom and Watford over the past few months offer genuine hope of defensive returns against the Canaries and Villa.

Arsenal’s Petr Cech stays in our thoughts despite the possibility of the Gunners most favourable fixture in the next six – the home clash against West Brom in Gameweek 30 – being rearranged should they progress past Hull in their FA Cup Fifth Round replay. Tough trips to Man United and Tottenham sandwich a favourable home clash against Swansea over the next fortnight, so the 5.9-rated Czech Republic international could struggle to deliver great value in the short-term if that Gameweek 30 blank comes into play.

With a pretty tough trip to Southampton on Saturday and a blank in Gameweek 30, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois slides down our ladder. The Blues do have favourable match-ups at Norwich and at home to Stoke in between, but with the Belgian setting us back 5.2 in FPL, there is little doubt cheaper options such as Forster and Schmeichel currently look better investments. The champions have also failed to register clean sheets in recent favourable home clashes against West Brom and Newcastle.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (5.2) falls a little due to concerns over a minor shoulder problem. Should he recover, the Frenchman faces a weekend home encounter with Swansea and showdowns with Aston Villa and Bournemouth in the next five, though tough matches against West Ham and Arsenal could limit his potential.

DEFENDERS

Having averaged 6.1 points per appearance over the last eight Gameweeks, Christian Fuchs keeps his place at the summit ahead of Leicester’s aforementioned favourable fixtures. The Austrian left-back is still available at just 4.8 in FPL, and leads all defenders for chances created (six) over the last four Gameweeks. With a realistic chance of gaining Fantasy points at either end of the pitch, having registered three assists and picked up 12 bonus points so far this season, the former Schalke defender looks to have plenty of upside over the coming weeks, as does his team-mate Robert Huth, who has scored three goals over the last six Gameweeks.

Virgil van Dijk is another who has emerged as something of a bonus point magnet, picking up seven extra points from Southampton’s recent run of six successive shut-outs. The Dutch international, available at 5.5 in FPL, stays in second spot, then, with the fixture list (CHE, bou, SUN, sto, LIV, lei) fairly positive over the coming weeks.

Tottenham’s weekend FA Cup exit helps Toby Alderweireld (6.3) climb back up a few positions, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men one of the sides who face no blanks over the next six Gameweeks (SWA, whm, ARS, avl, BOU, liv). The 6.3-rated centre-back, who leads all defenders in FPL this season with 116 points and sits in over 42% of teams, continues to look a reliable source of Fantasy points, although Spurs have managed just two shut-outs over the last eight Gameweeks.

A non-mover in our latest refresh is Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels. Despite missing a penalty in the Cherries’ 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Everton on Saturday, the left-back looks set to remain on spot-kick duties, judging by his manager’s post-match comments, and carries reasonable attacking potential, having registered 16 crosses and created four chances over the last four Gameweeks. The fixture list (wat, SOT, new, SWA) is pretty favourable in the short term, so the 4.7-priced defender should still prove to be one of the strongest budget options currently available to us.

The major mover among the defenders this week is Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid, with the two plum home fixtures against Aston Villa and Newcastle over the next two Gameweeks firmly in mind. The German centre-back only costs 4.5 in FPL and has picked up a reasonable seven bonus points so far this season, although he has yet to register any attacking returns. With an ownership of only 3%, the former Bayer Leverkusen defender could be worth a roll of the dice as a short-term differential – particularly if Ryan Shawcross recovers from injury in time to boost his clean sheet potential

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is also on the rise with the Welsh side facing three favourable fixtures (NOR, bou, AVL) between Gameweeks 29 and 31. The Wales skipper has also been a real threat from set-pieces of late, registering six shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, the joint-highest among defenders along with Everton duo Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori. Setting us back 4.8 in FPL, the centre-back looks ripe for investment once the difficult trips to Tottenham and Arsenal are done and dusted.

Having earned a recall against Swansea in Gameweek 26, Southampton’s Matt Targett zooms up our rankings this week due to his bargain price tag of 3.9 in FPL. The England U21 international has started four of the Saints’ last six matches, and has picked up two assists and five bonus points in the process. Playing at left wing-back, Targett has plenty of attacking potential, but his place in the starting XI is not totally assured due to Maya Yoshida being a viable option as a starter in central defence, with Ryan Bertrand then switching to left wing-back.

Having failed to earn any attacking points since Gameweek 9, and with three tough away matches in the next five (mun, SWA, tot, WBA, eve), Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin continues to hold limited appeal. There is also the possibility of the West Brom match being rearranged as already mentioned, and with the right-back coming in at a significant cost of 6.1 in FPL, there will likely be a temptation among many of the Spaniard’s 20% ownership to make a change in the near future.

One premium defender who does drop a couple of places on the Watchlist is Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, who faces a blank in Gameweek 30 following the Blues’ 5-1 win against Man City to progress in the FA Cup. The upcoming fixture list (sot, nor, STO, blank, WHM, avl) looks decidedly mixed now, and with the Serbian setting us back 6.6 in FPL, some of his 8% ownership may think that money could be better spent elsewhere, although he has registered five shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, highlighting his goal threat.

*Please be aware that our Watchlist Forwards tab is currently broken (there should be no Wayne Rooney) and will be amended as soon as possible.

Why on earth is a striker not looking to shoot when he's in the box??!! Other than that I don't think he should've been subbed off. Especially once we went a goal down

That's a very unspecific statement. Messi did not shoot when he passed to Suarez to hit the post, which was just after he passed from an almost identical position to Neymar. Striker does not equal shoot.

Yes but Barca in that game were always going to get lots of chances. A team playing Barca needs to take their chances. Giroud should have shot in that situation passing away from goal was the incorrect decision and that is surely glaringly obvious

It shows they don't play together enough, that should have been an automatised move, now they had different ideas so it failed.

But yeah, particularly his defensive work was extremely valuable. Arsenal in general will be harshly judged for having lost 2-0. They failed their few good chances, but they created more of them than Barcelona and this could have also ended the other way round. In the end that Messi-Neymar-Suarez attack three just is too tough to defend against.

I'd like to openly declare my love for Russel Penn of York City who kept my 12 fold acca stay alive til the 12th and last game tomorrow by scoring the 1 in their 1-2 loss in the 90th minute.

Just need a single goal in the Derby - Rovers game to make it happen.

Also appreciate that Accrington did not completely fall on their arses after leading with 3-0 and then making me nervous by allowing a 2nd comeback in the 80th.

Gonna be some sweet dreams tonight.

Yeah, usually the coaches have a good reason. If Coq was still missing match fitness, he just had to pull Coq out.

People are also blaming Flamini too much for the penalty. If Per wasn't so god darn clumsy, or if he'd at least hit the ball no-nonsense to the row Z if he can't bring it down, Flamini wouldn't have had to foul Messi.

I wouldn't be in a rush to slate him for being outclassed by this Barca side but he has been given the rod by much lesser teams in this competition for 18 years now and if only he addressed the issues that have held the team back eg top drawer DM top class CB and top class CF the gulf in class wouldn't be quite so evident.. I mean Monaco took them apart at the same stage last year and he still saw fit to go through the summer transfer window without signing an outfield player..

Can't be. Guaranteed 0-1 point against ManU this weekend, and when he sends his first team to Barcelona, the chances to win at Everton approach 0 as well. Leicester and Spurs both have better chances now.

Away match after a CL clash where you play your first team and have to fight to the end. That's a recipe for a weekend loss. All teams get seriously worse results after these matches. ManU has had the whole week to rest. I think you've got so much more class though that a draw is possible or even probable.

And the reality is where are these players? The really top level, the level down for your super players.

The top top class want to play for Real, Barca, Bayern, even PSG these days. The top top class. So you look to your second tier, third tier and Wenger has done well to pick up Özil & Sanchez.

Did brilliantly to pick up Ozil and Sanchez two absolute worldies but why not splash out on the positions that needs it most.. he has persisted with these slight and technically brilliant players trying to be Barcelona over the last 12 years and forgotten those who dig in when the chips are down and stick a foot in when needed.. they have been targetted and kicked all over the pitch by teams who cant take them on and they have crumbled every time over the years and he does nothing to address it

Sánchez is most at fault because he is emotional and takes in two even when he's the last man. Thats why Barca had no need for him. It's das, because other than his header, he's brilliant and even a workhorse

You seem to have a fairly anti-Arsenal and Wenger stance here Nidge. From my understanding of Arsenal the model is all about sustainability to fund the new stadium. Since the move he's pulled out to worldie transfers like I've mentioned and his steady hand has Arsenal in the mix for a domestic double still. It's not to be sniffed at. His team has got better, they have Monreal/Bellerin/Cech/Coquelin through the spine of the team. That's been a fairly recent change that those guys have all become first choice Arsenal players, so in that respect he's addressed real weak areas of the side and areas he's been criticised for not improving.

Its easy to say buy a top this or a top that. Plenty of Premier League clubs in worse spots than Arsenal have a lot of money and they are throwing it about buying players that fall well short of top class. Fanboy type players like City buying that Mangala or Otamendi. Wenger is prudent to a fault in that respect yeah. But buying a player like that can give an impression of fixing something without actually doing so. I wouldn't be critical of the way his teams play football. I'd imagine you be quite happy if United played the stuff Arsenal did. They are without a doubt the best footballing side in England.

Not at all mate and certainly not critical of the way his teams play football like you say Arsenal play some of the best stuff in England im in total agreement with that but what good is that against Stoke or any other team that decide they aren't going to let them play how they want to.. get in their faces rough them up and they roll over... they are soft plain and simple and 2 FA cups in 12 years is testament to that.. its his own stubborness that sees him persist with this way of playing trying to imitate Barcelona to an extent really.. you play a bit yourself mate so u know what i mean you need a mix and they dont have it.. no plan b and its been the same for years

I'd expect them not to change either, and I don't think it's a bad thing.

I just think we can be over critical as a people in England, Ireland, Britain whichever. If the football is good and the end product is there great, it's brilliant stuff. Otherwise it's all fart no splash.

Fwiw I think they have toughened up a bit but I'll agree that they miss that bit of steel and that bit of nastyness and cuteness that you need something to get over the line rather than being the nice guy, or the naive one.

But they can keep playing their football I like watching it and I'll say this they aren't a million miles off. They were keen on say Suarez before for example if you put a really good front man in that team, a really good one they would have a field day. If that day comes they won't need a plan B, maybe.

I have huge respect for Arsene Wenger.

Dont see a change either not while Wenger is in charge anyway and you're dead right they aren't a million miles away and id go as far as to say they are 2 or 3 top players from not only winning league titles but dominating English football... iv a lot of respect for him too he pretty much revolutionised english football when he arrived in 96 and his success in those first 7 or 8 years were incredible but by the same token he has to be held to account for the lack of success in the last 12..

The reality is a star player can lift a team to the title, or very close. Whether you address the greater squad issues or not.

Look what Suarez did for Liverpool - close.

Look at Van Persie for United - his goal papered over every crack in the squad.

precisely, Arsenal fans ignore the fact that Alexis when tackled in the Premiership, likes to wave the card at the Ref to get the player booked.

Waving the card at a ref is not quite the same thing as rolling around like you've been shot in the foot. I know it happens in the PL too like Ramsey v Leicester (although that was a genuinely horrible challenge) but then when you see Barca do it I feel it happens five times as frequently.

waving a card is one of the dumbest things to complain about a player doing. Instead of a hand gesture, when a player goes up to the ref, do you not think he probably asks for a card to be produced in rather colourful language?

No doubt, but these lads just seem to take it to a different level. Not like they need to be given how good they are. Surprised the refs aren't a bit wiser to it sometimes.

I posted this on Triggerlips blog but thought I'd post it here too whilst I'm watching the FF Scout Cast stream (a bit behind)

I know in past seasons having a cheap bench fodder mid is usually a good idea – we want to be able to afford the most expensive high performing players. But this year with lots more money available due to injuries and/or under performance of expensive players and the emergence of some great low mid-options like Alli, I’m curious why you haven’t decided to move to a 5 man midfield?

Many other long standing FPL players have adopted this approach this year and it has been working for them. Of course, benching points sucks and the great Villa Ronka made the same “mistake” I did 2 GW back when he benched Mahrez against City. But getting the decision right is a great feeling. It’s also a good feeling to have your bench player come off the bench and score points as opposed to it being a 2 pointer!

It also gives you more flexibility with less “need” for transfers. For example; if you have Siggy along with bench fodder, you may be tempted to do Siggy > Arnie and then Arnie back to Siggy in GW29 (or maybe someone else back to Siggy like Payet given Arnie has GW30) But with a 5 man midfield you can just bench him for the next 2.

What are people's thoughts on 5th mid vs bench fodder this year?

To everyone who wants a decent opinion and speaks of gulfes or sh*t.
That game was very equal until the 70th minute (not posession-wise but like the Bayern homw game as in relevant chances), then we (yes I am an Arsenal supporer if that helps some condemning my words) threw it away. I don't want to argue that we are in any way a good as Barca, we are not and they would obv walk this league but in this game (like the Bayern game) there was every Chance that the game would go either way. Unlike the Bayern Game a 0-0 wouldn't have been a bad result so there is no eccuse in my opinion, to go all out and attack like we did in those minutes of the game. I was literally screaming at the screen after 70mins that they should position themselves differently (whilst in ballPosession) unless they wanted to conced. The goal happended a minute later, not from a missed pass (Ramseys to the right flank was very good but not easy and already risky), but from a cross and a clearence. It was so easy and I as a stupid supporter could see it coming. I wished Wenger could have teached them intelligence or mentality. WE shifted the odds of scoring so dramatically in their favour, that I was, I repeat, fumingly screaming although WE had posession and it was 0-0.
It was like watching amateurs or fools. Before that both Teams had 2 huge chances and a draw was the fair result. Also a nice result, so why do this.
Then after the goal they attacked like headless chicken as ifbthere was no replay and Suárez should have scored before the worst player on the planet was introduced by an emotional lovely intelligent man, who sadly is not a ruthless manager at these times. Normally I love his Philosophy. It's not only about winning but how.. But today winning would have felt even better if it happened intelligently, or a draw because they play like machines. They follow instructions perfectly and they are good enough to be intelligent enough, were trained to be calm enough, not to lose their heads. It was sad to see really.

You are simple. I like that.
I wouldn't like it for myself.
It must be brilliant tho. Easy life. No complaints.
I like getting beat. But I unlike headlesnes.

Mate, if you support a rubbish team you get used to it and if you don't, be thankful and don't get carried away when you do get beat. Not everyone was born or lives in Barcelona. Being a fan requires taking the rough with the smooth

You can scroll back to the start when it's still live or the whole video goes up immediately after the live version ends as a normal youtube video.

as per FA rules, replay date has to be announced within 7 days of picking the draws for the next round. so we should know soon.
