Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Anthony Martial

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

Sané was nowhere near the level of Mkhitaryan last season though, which is understandable as he is just 20 and played for a worse team. Schalke 04 were below par for their expectations.

      If Sané was 9.0 he'd be over-priced imo. I suspect 8/8.5

    Ok think after a few attempts I have settled on this team, thoughts please;

    Foster / Jakupovic
    Shaw / Azpilicueta / McAuley / Stones / Kone
    Tadic / Hazard / Lamela / Bolasie / Fletcher
    Ibrahimovic / Aguero / Gray

The only thing I can possibly think of changing is ditching either Stones or Azpilicueta and putting the funds into upgrading Bolasie or Lamela??

Just a thought on Martial v Mkhi. I think the game has slightly overpriced Martial and slightly over valued the fact that he is league-proven. Mkhi at 9.5 could be the biggest bargin in a long time.

I think you're overstating that. Bigger than Mahrez last year and Kane the year before? Not possible at a cost of 9.5.

If Martial played a full season last season he would most likely have ended the season on approximately 170-180pts (Wijnaldum is a good comparison) and that was with little help in a poor attacking team, and no added points for clean sheets as he was classed as a striker.

This season he has a much better support crew around him so should get even more opportunities for goals and assists at a quicker rate. He also is classed as a mid so will now benefit from MU's solid defense with added CS points, and is a bonus magnet with a hugely favorable start to the season.

Whilst I agree that 9.5mil seems a little high, considering he could well break 200pts+ this season based on last year's returns and his new classification and teammates, I now believe it's probably a fair evaluation when compared to other potential 200pt season players such as Hazard, Sanchez, KDB, Mahrez etc.

Of course he could suffer from second year blues but I think he's got the quality and confidence to succeed once again.

I was pretty sceptical of him when he got the Wales job, but after a fairly dodgy start he barely put a foot wrong with his tactics and substitions in qualifying and in the finals.

No doubt in my mind that our recent success is down to him, for the most part. He plays to our strengths and uses the weaknesses as ways to motivate the players and build team spirit.

Toying with having Hazard in my team or not, which option:

    A) 3-5-2 Current team
    Foster
    Terry Williams Friend (£5M* £4m)
    Mahrez Firmino Townsend AYEW* DEULOFEU*
    Aguero Ibra (DIOMANDE*)

    B) 4-4-2
    Foster
    Terry Williams Friend MCCAULEY* (£4m)
    Mahrez Firmino Townsend HAZARD* (CAPOUE*)
    Aguero Ibra (DIOMANDE*)

    C) 3-4-3
    Foster
    Terry Williams Friend (MCCAULEY* £4m)
    Mahrez Firmino HAZARD* (CAPOUE* HOLJBJERG*)
    Aguero Ibra AUSTIN*/£6.5m

Is Hazard worth it from the start? Could always save £0.5m with A to allow Mahrez > Hazard if he starts scoring well. Probably will wildcard early so could just wait until the International Break to adjust my team for him.

Since Alex Bruce is injured long term he is price locked, therefore he cannot change in value.

Is it better to have a 4m who you know won't play but won't drop in price

    OR

A 4m defender who has a low chance of playing and will most likely drop in price

    Thoughts?

    1. Pasqualinho
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

I think you have something with the Bruce pick if you're putting him 3rd on the bench. He's not strictly price-locked, as such - he can still go down - But those rumoured to be starting but don't are far more likely to drop in price quicker than those who are injured, so you should be safer price wise with Bruce than with the likes of Lenihan/Smith/Amat. However you need to balance that out with the fact that Len etc have far more chance of getting at least some points, should you need them.

      1. Jamie_GAWA
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

He won't have enough people transferring him out for him to go down, that's 99% guaranteed.

I agree with Smith and Amat although Lenihan has a serious chance of playing.

He might - the issue is market forces. If a lot of people agree with the concept that he can't go down and therefore increase his initial ownership believing him to be protected, then of course he has more chance to drop. It all really depends if another 4.0 defender does become nailed on - then all other 4.0s become at risk.

Are you a trader? You always answer the price change questions so well.

I don't know whether to be insulted or take that as a compliment...

Oh it's definitely an insult 😉

I'm just really interested in the price change stuff and therefore ask a few questions on it. You're always there with the answer!

Right boys, tempted by the Fischer enabler now (subject to more info in his next two games), so let's have a vote....

    A) Firmino & Deulofeu
    B) Mahrez/Martial & Fischer

      B)

What does the fischer enabler mean?

It means Fischer is so cheap he enables you to buy stronger players elsewhere

With so many mids to choose from that could score well in the mid to premium bracket e.g. Firmino, Mkhi, Martial, Hazard, Mahrez, etc etc, I'm leaning towards starting with 4 quality proven mids and Aguero then rotating the 1 budget mid spot and having 2 budget strikers (Negredo, Gray, Long etc).

Means if Ibra or Kane start performing from the start I'll need to WC or take a couple of hits to shift funds around but upside is better chance of choosing this years Mahrez/Vardy by having 2 of the 6.5m Forwards and allows a little more to be spent on Defence e.g. Williams instead of a 4.5m.

The low-premium mids tend to suck you in as there are so many of them. Last year there were a whole raft of 9.0M mids- and, for a whole season, I'd want these to get 20x their value (so 180 points). But only Ozil of this lot managed this, your Walcotts/Sterlings/Matas/Ramseys/Coutinhos/Oscars got nowhere near. I hear people say the value is in midfield, but normally it's your mid-priced ones where the value is (Payet/Eriksen/Arnie/Ayew etc) - which is why I'm not sure going for 3 or 4 9M+ mids is the answer.
