FanDuel Focus – Gameweek 3

Welcome to our regular Friday lunchtime article, which takes a look at one day and weekly game FanDuel’s key picks and contests. Each round we’ll be putting forward a proposed XI who we think should prosper in the Gameweek’s action, according to FanDuel’s unique scoring system.

There are three deadlines on FanDuel for entering line-ups into contests this weekend. The 12.30pm early afternoon kick-off at White Hart Lane marks the start of the games that cover all ten fixtures of the round. The Saturday only contests begin at 3pm, while the two-game slate on Sunday must be joined by 1.30pm.

Four sides are looking for a third consecutive win in Gameweek 3. The match at the KCOM stadium surprisingly features two of these teams – Manchester United travel to Hull and will be strong favourites despite the Tigers’ bright start to the campaign. Chelsea and Manchester City both have home fixtures, which they will be expected to win against Burnley and West Ham respectively.

Southampton, Leicester City and Everton also enjoy home comforts. The Saints welcome Sunderland while the champions are visited by Swansea, with all four teams looking for a first victory of the campaign. The Toffees defeated West Brom 2-1 at the Hawthorns last time out, while their visitors Stoke conceded four at the Etihad.

To get started, register for a free account via this link. When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash.

There’s also a strategy guide available that examines which players to target in the various positions based on the average scores they would have accrued if the scoring was applied to last season.

My Team

Maarten Stekelenburg (£5.5m)

James Collins (£4.1m)

Curtis Davies (£6.1m)

Ben Mee (£6.1m)

Nathan Redmond (£8.5m)

Ross Barkley (£9.8m)

Andros Townsend (£10.1m)

Eden Hazard (£12.5m)

Salomon Rondon (£6.9m)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£14.0m)

Sergio Aguero (£16.0m)

Key Picks

Everton look well set for a first clean sheet of the term as they welcome the Potters to Goodison Park. Ronald Koeman’s managerial acumen should improve the Toffees defence and keeper Maarten Stekelenburg provides a budget route into their backline. Three saves in each of the opening fixtures also bodes well for the Dutch shot stopper’s chances. If you have more funds available for the keeper spot, the only position in FanDuel that’s rewarded for clean sheets (10 points), then consider Ben Foster (£7.5m) – a second shut-out of the season may be on the cards as West Brom host Middlesbrough.

We’ve gone for a trio of centre-backs who are likely to face considerable attacking threat, which should elicit plenty of clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) points from our picks. James Collins has made eight interceptions and 11 clearances across his two outings so far. Tasked with preventing Pep Guardiola’s expansive City side from scoring at the Etihad on Sunday, we’re backing the West Ham asset to substantially increase those defensive numbers.

Only Curtis Davies has a better average than Collins for defenders over the first two matches. He is also expected to be kept busy accumulating defensive points for the visit of Manchester United. His kind price tag also offers excellent value, with 6.4 FanDuel points per million the fourth best in Gameweek 2.

Ben Mee is another defender set to accumulate a strong CBI tally, when his Burnley side visit Stamford Bridge. He has notched up 15 clearances so far this season.

We highlighted another centre-half, Scott Dann (£7.9m) in the Weekly Shop, as Crystal Palace host a lacklustre Bournemouth side which has conceded 17 shots in the box already. With a goal midweek against Blackpool in the League Cup, Dann looks in the mood to replicate his scoring heroics of last season, where he scored five times and had the second highest shots on target tally of any defender.

Dann’s team-mate Andros Townsend also makes the XI, having created five chances and fired eight attempts on goal so far. Christian Benteke (£8.3m) seems unlikely to start, judging by Alan Pardew’s comments earlier today, yet the Belgian could be worth a gamble and will surely get minutes off the bench at the least.

Ross Barkley maintained an encouraging start to the season with another goal and assist in this week’s League Cup win over Yeovil Town. The midfielder has produced six attempts on goal and five key passes in his pair of league matches. A reasonable price tag and a points per match average of 29.88 make him an ideal FanDuel selection on current form.

With a large chunk of our funds being utilised on forwards, we’ve had to save money in midfield. We’re still confident that Nathan Redmond provides value, though Dusan Tadic (£10.7m) has also piqued our interest – the Serbian midfielder has created eight chances and it could be worth doubling up on the Southampton pair for the visit of Sunderland.

We’ve gone for Eden Hazard over Riyad Mahrez (£13.5m) in our selection for the same cost-cutting reason. However, the latter should not be ignored after accruing an average score of 31.38 points so far this term. The Chelsea midfielder is no slouch, though, averaging 26.5 points and facing a Burnley team that has conceded the most goal attempts of any Premier League side this season.

The big-hitters up front pick themselves. Both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero appear risky to drop from any line-up at this point, though it could be worth considering changing one to the likes of Mahrez if playing multiple entries. Finally, Salamon Rondon fills our final slot ahead of the home tie against promoted Middlesbrough. The West Brom striker scored against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1, has created four chances and had three shots on target so far.

This Week’s Games

The Saturday time-frame has the biggest pot of the weekend, the £7500 Fan Favourite contest which has a £5 buy-in and a £750 first-place prize. There’s a £10 entry game with 40 places available – the top half of entrants receive £18 back.

These Saturday only contests have a 3pm deadline so be sure to watch out for team news before finalising your line-ups. There’s also a free £25 pot available here which is ideal for trying out the format for the first time to get used to the scoring.

On Sunday there are two big games starting at 1.30pm. The Special has £777 guaranteed in winnings, with a £7 entry fee, while the £500 challenge has a £3 buy-in.

The main game that covers the full slate is the £1500 weekend special – it has a £3 entry fee, with £200 going to first place. Our own contest, the Fantasy Football Scout Challenge is £1 to enter with a guaranteed pot of £150 available, these two contests start at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Targett (SUN) or Gray (che)? I'm on Targett and feel it's the right decision but I benched Gray's 10 pointer last week in order to play a back 4. Hope the same thing doesn't happen again.

Other defenders? I wouldn't be comfortable benching Burnley's star inform striker. Chelsea defence hasn't been brilliant.

Valencia, Baines and Stones. Could bench Stones but basically my entire ML owns him and I don't want to miss out when they do keep a CS.

In my opinion, Gray is a 2 pointer this week.

Hey everyone, I have 2 FTs and not sure what to do. 0.0 itb. Would appreciate ur opinion.

    Foster - Jak
    Valencia - Stones - Morgan - Friend - Amat
    Hazard - Mahrez - Redmond - Townsend - Capoue
    Kun - Ibra - Gray

Thinking of using only a single transfer and save 2FTs for next week. My thoughts are
    1. Morgan for williams
    2. Morgan for cheaper to cash
    3. Townsend for somene else
    4. Friend for (holding/collins/Mee...etc)
    5. Gray to avoid drop if banned

Yea that's what I mean - you guessed right on both your budget and premium players. There's no one I'd wanna take out of your team but since you have an FT to burn maybe try just release cash to get some one in for next time.. maybe an Everton player or something else will jump out.

Wow I have the same team and the same question! (except Redmond for Townsend, Kone for Friend and 1mil in the bank). I literally have no idea what to do. Don't want to lose a FT. I agree Morgan needs to go but his fixture this week is amazing. Same with Gray this week.

and yes! I've posted a question below too. Options i'm considering are Morgan out (but as I said, he's surely getting a CS this week)... or maybe even Pickford for Foster? But we dont know if Moyes is buying another keeper or not.

Well Townsend is ok, I think he's similar to Ramirez and is a good budget option. As I say below I'm thinking about Holgate in for Kone (who's injured this week). Isn't Friend injured too? Could be the best move as Everton have great fixtures.

Right mate what I've gone for is Kone to Williams - excellent player, BAPS magnet and unreal fixtures for Everton coming up. Only downside is that means probably playing 4 at the back this week (Shaw (a), Williams (h), Morgan (h), Stones (h)) and playing Cap on the bench. Plan is then to transfer Morgan and Mahrez(form dependent) or Ramirez to Barkley and another budget defender after the international game week. This should give us loads of funds to play with. Meanwhile our teams are so good our TV is only going to go up. Thoughts?

I think holdings is a risky move if arsenal sign someone. Given the strength of our teams we can afford to play safe. I agree about Mahrez, just worried that he's overpriced but while he's not dropping in TV and there aren't obvious choices, we can wait. Big one for me is Morgan to go next week for someone cheaper so I have less funds kept in defence.

i agree with holding of course. he was just to cheap for arsenal defence thats all. i know i would lose morgan (id prefer next week but i have the 2 FTs this week though). I can lose friend too, injured this week and too many owners. My 3rd and last one id like to ship is townsend but ill give him another week (for lack of alternatives)

Hey guys I'd like to ask about Double Game Weeks...

Been out the loop for a few years but I remember watching the season ticker where you could see them a mile off and basing alot of transfers / wilrdcards and captaincy decisions around them. A certain Tevez Christmas hattrick comes to mind when half the other games got cancelled.

    Questions:
    - Is the season ticker still around? I'm currently using one from another site:
    fantasyfootball247.co.uk/fixture-tracker/
    - Are there any DGW announce?
    - What kind of factors are likely to force them in?

DGWs won't be until around GW34 and 37, maybe a few weeks either side. Will not be announced until around gw30-32 so I wouldn't worry about them yet. Long way off.

If Diomande flops you're really gonna struggle to replace him with just the 1 transfer. I'd reconsider. Also don't like Collins, West Ham are very much off-form and weren't great defensively even last season.

Firmino passes 2 yards to Coutinho, Coutinho skies it from 35 yards out.

    Shaw, Evans, Friend, Amat, Kingsley
    Hazard, Tadic, Lamela, Feghouli, Capoue

Bit of a defensive crisis this week

    Foster (MID)
    Valencia (hul) - Evans*(MID) - Friend* (wba)
Hazard (BUR) - Mahrez (SWA) - Lamela (LIV) - Redmond (SUN)
Aguero (WHM) - Ibrahimovic (hul) - Benteke (BOU)

    Jakupovic - Capoue - Love* - Amat

Benteke could do well even off the bench so not worried there. I had planned a WC GW4, so I'd like the defence to hold for one more week. I have no more FTs, so would you play AOA to make sure I have XI out this week? Or would you gamble on one of Evans, Friend or Love starting?

I'm confident Evans will start, Pulis didn't mention him at all so I'm assuming it was just a niggle, I don't think Friend will be risked and Manquillo might start over Love. You'll have Amat in for sure.

Play AOA. It is situations like this where it is useful. Keep Amat last on bench though as while he is the most likely to start from those 4 defs apart from Valencia, he is probably the least preferred and Evans looks a decent possibility to start. Worst case Amat comes on and you will still have 11. If you don't play AOA, there's a decent chance you won't have 11.

    Hi guys,

    My current team stands at:

    Heaton/Foster

    Stones/Shaw/Morgan/Friend/Amat

    Hazard/Firmino/Tadic/Phillips/Capoue

    Aguero/Ibra/Gray

I have two free transfers and was wondering what, if anything is worth doing?

Im thinking Firmino to Barkley for a start.

Thanks for any help in advance

    Foster
    Valencia / Holding / Evans

So Mannone is going to sit on the bench losing value until WC time or he comes back
    OR
Take a hit to get in Jako, who is rising in value.

Net gain (Jak rising, Mannone falling) by time I WC might be say 0.3m gain AND in the meantime I can employ the 0.5m from downgrading Mannone elsewhere. In that scenario a 4pt hit makes a big difference. The extra 0.5m going into Int'l break might mean I can upgrade one of my 4.5m defenders.

I'm not convinced Jako is going to rise by that much, but otherwise generally agree with your logic.

Out of interest who's your other keeper? You've not even mentioned that you might use Jako in your first team every once in a while

Actually, thinking about it a little more - I don't think i'd take a hit to do it this week. Make the transfer next week if you can.
