Scout Report – Simone Zaza

Following injuries to Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic strengthened his attacking options with the acquisition of Juventus striker Simone Zaza late last week. The Italian international joins on a season-long loan for an initial €5 million, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 25-year-old is keen to improve over the next nine months after struggling to nail down a regular role with the Serie A side:

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me… I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season.”

The History

Born in Policoro, Italy, Zaza began his youth career at Stella Azzurra Bernalda and Valdera before being scouted by Serie A side Atalanta, whom he signed with at the age of 15.

He made his professional debut for Atalanta against Reggina in April 2009, but would only be granted two further league appearances for the club before joining Sampdoria in July 2010.

Zaza failed to establish himself at Sampdoria, though, and was sent out on loan three times over the following four seasons. He played four matches for Serie B outfit Juve Stabia in 2011/12, scoring one goal, before joining Viareggio, a third tier side, on loan during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted 11 times in 18 matches.

The following season saw Zaza take in another loan spell, this time with Serie B side Ascoli, where he again impressed, scoring 18 goals and adding four assists from 36 appearances.

Having played just twice for Sampdoria over three years, Zaza moved to Sassuolo in the summer of 2013. He scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A matches, and improved on that record the following campaign, totalling 11 goals and three assists in 31 matches.

Last summer, Zaza joined Juventus but struggled for pitch time with the Italian champions. Handed only five starts (and 14 sub appearances) he registered a respectable five goals and an assist in just 663 minutes.

Capped by Italy at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 levels, totalling six appearances, Zaza made his senior debut against Holland in September 2014. He featured three times for the Azzurri during Euro 2016 and has so far played 14 times for his country, scoring once and providing three assists.

The Prospects

Given the afore-mentioned injuries to Carroll and Ayew, it’s expected that Zaza will be West Ham’s first choice striker for the time being – ahead of Jonathan Calleri, Enner Valencia and Ashley Fletcher in the pecking order.

The Italian could be a little short of match fitness having failed to feature for Juve during their first two league matches, but he did register some minutes in pre-season, including an appearance against the Hammers, where he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win for the Serie A champions.

It’s expected that the new boy will come in at 7.0 or 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and with the Hammers likely to be boosted by the return of the hugely influential Dimitri Payet after the international break, Zaza should be on the end of a decent supply line, which also includes the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Sofiane Feghouli, another who should return to full fitness over the next couple of weeks.

Zaza impressively averaged a goal attempt every 22.1 minutes last season, which was better than both Carroll (27.6) and Ayew (45.4), although the later did play on the right wing in the majority of his appearances whilst playing for Swansea.

The Italian is not really a target man, though, winning just 17 of his 35 aerial duels last season, relying instead on his clever movement and calmness in front of goal. Zaza isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, though, so it appears he will be heavily reliant on chances being created for him.

Bearing in mind that most Fantasy managers are currently holding Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, Zaza may well turn out to be a viable option in that crucial mid-price bracket if he can take advantage of some promising fixtures to follow. Obviously a potential ban for Aguero would force a reassessment.

West Ham are braced for four favourable home clashes (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN) in the next six Gameweeks, promoting the appeal of an attack that found the net 65 times last term.

Although a fit-again Payet looks the Hammers’ likeliest source of returns, Zaza – if he can up his match sharpness over the international break – has the potential to hit the ground running.

If you’re eyeing up the West Ham options, Antonio – at 7.0 – is also one to monitor after taking his tally to two goals in as many matches with a weekend header away to City. The downside, however, is that the versatile former Forest man is just as likely to be fielded in defence, judging by Bilic’s team sheets, though a move to the attacking midfield three could yet see him emerge as one of the best mid-price options in the centre of the park.

I am very disappointed because he (Mahrez) is a very good lad. They are both our penalty scorer, him and Vards, and he wanted to shoot. It is okay with me.

It was the third miss by the Algerian in his last four penalty attempts in the Premier League and Ranieri, who took Mahrez off penalties in January last season, said he would discuss the situation with Mahrez and Vardy.

Mahrez is a very dodgy penalty taker. He cost us 2 wins in as many games from the spot last season, hence why he lost them. Vardy isn't too great either, prone to smashing them high. If we pull off the signing of Adrien Silva before the window closes, he will be the penalty taker I'd imagine (has an excellent record). Of our current squad, Ulloa looks the most assured from the spot, but is rarely on the pitch to take them.

    Optimistic Kun ban talk as a non-wildcarder;

    - The first of the three games will be at Old Trafford, so you're effectively benching 2pts anyway, play Capoue and hope for the best at London Stadium.

    - The second of the three games is a home game against Bournemouth. I'm not going to lie here, this might not end too well, but will you bank on shuffling some cash about to get the likes of Sterling/Nolito, and if so, will you have the bottle to captain them over the likes of Sánchez(@Hull) or Ibrahimović(@Watford)? Capoue has United at home, so maybe you look at a 4-4-2 this week?

    - The third match is an EFL Cup tie vs Swansea, so he's back in your team for next week. You've only lost about 10 replacement points, maybe, but you've saved two transfers and maybe even more considering you're likely to tinker with the spare few million you have in the bank, so hits may be required to force him back into your side.

Yep, you must make adequate provision to get him back for Wk 6, swa. No use spreading it around, be a nightmare to sort out.

"You've only lost about 10 replacement points, maybe"

Disagree there. Kun out is an easy way to get Sanchez in + replacement striker with 2 favourable games.

The point swing there could be massive! You've not "lost about 10 replacement points", you've foregone possibly much more.

Find another way, why would you buy a player of Sánchez's caliber with the intention of selling him in a few weeks anyway, especially when the fixtures turn green?

Hi quick question. If I transfer players and take multiple hits but then decide to press the WC button at the end of the international break for example. Will all my previous hits become free? The rules pretty much say this but still feel nervy to do it!!

    Foster Jakupovic
    Valencia Fuchs Friend Pieters McAuley
    Hazard Barkley Redmond Ramirez Capoue
    Aguero Ibra Negredo

    FT: 1, WC, ITB: 2.4

Barkley to Sterling then Ramirez to Lamela/Lallana/Antonio (the following week for a FT)

      Or

A tiny difference, I doubt that even a majority of serious players on here do it. Nevermind a reasonable proportion of the 3.5m plus players of FPL. The vast majority probably don't even know a late wildcard will wipe their hits.

But they are one player out of 3.5m+, their one transfer is a drop in the ocean. If every player did it, it would be noticeable, but I that doubt even 2% of players do this over a whole season.

I'll be benching most likely. It'll be so hard to get him back without taking hits which I find completely useless.

Your above lineup would give you selection headaches (who would you bench? Defoe or Snodgrass?)

You can consider Snodgrass as a 4th mid and pick a cheap bench player (Capoue). Extra funds to be used to upgrade Defoe.

      OR

Downgrade Defoe and play 3-5-2 and use those extra funds to upgrade other positions.

Just seen the City - West Ham highlights. Main points of note I drew:

    1) Nasri's hair is ridiculous
    2) None of the midfielders look like standout options. Can see the points being shared a lot and you'll probably get returns every 2-3 games on average from any of them. Sterling, being the cheapest seems the best bet if going for one - but in all honesty, I'd look elsewhere

    1. Bubz
      • 10 Years

I think Nolito and Sterling are the obvious standout options, from the style of play of Pep. They get into the box way waaaay more than KDB and Silva

        But Sane and Navas (lol).
Silva and KDB are nailed at least. I won't get any but if all were priced the same, I feel Silva is the man. Sterling price is huge tho

That is exactly what it is there for... but also have a good look at fixtures going forward. Arsenal, Everton, Hammers and Spurs have a good run coming up.

          My two pence:
Get some United defense - Valencia is who I have.
          Get Hazard

My best ever season was an early WC.

    The Arsenal Dilemma!!

Sanchez - 10.9 (( Attacks a lot, and can explode with goals and assists, not too consistent ))
Ozil - 9.5 (( Attacks a bit, mainly focused on assisting, kind of consistent ))
Cazorla - 7.5 (( Shoots every now and then, attempts assist every now and then, and on Penalties / some freekicks / some corner kicks ))

I am literally torn apart, i know that Cazorla can never get more than a goal and assist, but maybe thats enough? the 3.4 mil saving is just too tempting

    Quote from Ronald K:
"We missed a penalty against Espanyol with Barkley, so we have gone through it and had some players on the list - it is Lukaku and Barkley but it is also Baines."

I read this as the next penalty taker being any one of those three.

Hmmm, one i found is slightly different and not so kind on Barkley:

Asked whether Lukaku had been considered to take the game's pivotal spot-kick after Phil Bardsley was controversially judged to have upended Ashley Williams, Koeman said: "No Ross Barkley missed a penalty against Espanyol and we had some players on the list to take them.

"Baines was next but Lukaku is on the list.

"It wasn't Leighton's best penalty but it was an important one."

    2ITM 1 FT:

I'm thinking of Deulofeu & Couthino > Sanchez & King for a -4. I want to save my WC & want to beat price rises/drops.

    Would give me:

    Jaku/Foster
Valencia / Stones / Holgate (Friend / Amat)
Sanchez / Redmond / Hazard / King (Capoue)
    Aguero / Ibra / Negrado

Thinking to rotate King & Capoue depending on fixtures. Hoping the yellow flags on Stones, Friend & Aguero have gone after international break, if they haven't I would play Capoue & King for GW 4. I know Holgate will only be around until Coleman back but will use a FT later on that. Currently on 181 points, 2nd in ML & 119k OR.

Thoughts please 🙂 (soz for long post)
