With two benchings and a missed penalty in Manchester City’s last pair of fixtures, some Fantasy managers are considering the unthinkable when it comes to Sergio Aguero’s place in their squads.

Our hot topics reveal just how low the Manchester City striker’s stock has plummeted as other players, particularly those among Arsenal’s ranks, start to look more reliable picks.

Our community articles examine Bournemouth’s latest moneyball prospect and there are further midfield gems being unearthed in our Members table round up.

Finally, we see who is going into Gameweek 9 on a high with a look at the latest leaders in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

Junior Stanislas’ strong recent form, of 36 Fantasy Premier League points over his last three games, has prompted Spreadsheet to delve deep into his statistics. His research offers an invaluable insight as to whether he will be a flash in the pan or the real deal.

Despite his strong recent form Bournemouth supporters are not optimistic their side will do well when Spurs visit this weekend, according to Bolivian Seaman‘s latest What the Fans Are Saying article.

For those looking for better Gameweek 9 prospects YMA has been down to the bookies for inspiration for where to place the armband. There was further analysis of captaincy options when Spreadsheet dropped by later in the week to check up on how the Magnificent Seven Theory is helping pick the best player for double points.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

This week’s most transferred in player, Theo Walcott, has already seen his price rise twice since a Gameweek 8 brace. Given his stellar form we asked for your thoughts on whether the winger offers enough Arsenal coverage on his own or should be paired up with team-mate, Alexis Sanchez.

Walcott’s exceptional form is tempting some to swerve Sanchez and instead consider Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne as their premium-priced midfielder. During the week ESpanYOLO weighed up the pros and cons of investing in either the Chilean or Belgian stars.

At the other end of the price spectrum sits Joe Allen, who has made a mockery of his 4.9 price tag with 35 FPL points in his last three league outings. Given this recent run, it is not surprising to see the Stoke City midfielder take his place behind Walcott as the week’s second most popular transfer.

But many in the community are urging caution.

Internal error pondered whether he’ll end up like Etienne Capoue, who is failing to sustain early-season goal scoring feats from a central midfield berth.

Those swapping out Capoue for the Stoke man who are expecting a far better Fantasy prospect will be mistaken, declared Gangdu Laowai earlier this week. Parm is another to pour scorn on the viability of Allen as a long term Fantasy asset, with this excellent analysis on his prospects.

Among those drafting in Allen are Fantasy managers opting for a 3-5-2 formation to accommodate the array of midfield talent on offer this season. Albrightondknight believes that, so far, this strategy is trumping the more popular 3-4-3 formation.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Southampton’s Charlie Austin are certainly putting forward a good counter argument to those opting for 3-5-2. The forward pair have four goals between them over the last two Gameweeks, making them ideal third striker options. Bob dropped by midweek to assess which of these cheap forwards we should be considering.

In Gameweek 8 both Austin and Wilson outscored popular captaincy pick Sergio Aguero by some distance. Given he has failed to score in three of his six and has been benched in both of Manchester City’s last matches, we asked whether it was time to cut back on the times we hand him the armband.

Ruth_NZ added further rain to the Aguero parade with his look back at Pep Guardiola’s rocky relationships with strikers over the years.

Could Aguero soon join the likes of Zlatan Ibrahomovic and head for the exit door as a Fantasy asset? We took a look at how your teams would line up if you decided to sever ties with the Manchester City forward.

Our Rough with the Smooth round up of your Gameweek 8 highs and lows showed just how many were let down by the Argentine, with his penalty miss costing those that captained him dearly.

For some, a rough Gameweek or season can end in even more humiliation, with Fantasy leagues starting to add tough penalties for those holding the wooden spoon. In our discussion on forfeits Krul Runnings revealed the extravagant lengths his league has gone to so that last place comes with a hefty price to pay.

The Members Tables

With £10 free credit with FanDuel to those entering our latest Cup competition, I’ve created this handy table looking at the players who excel in this daily and weekly Fantasy format.

Joe Allen’s recent goal scoring feats have led Baines on Toast to construct a table specifically looking for similar midfielders, who are able to combine defensive responsibilities with attacking threat.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Jarvish dropped by to bring us news of a tasty new competition for the community to take part in.

In Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season mini-league Sahil Sud retains the lead and sits 355th in the overall rankings.

Another to stay top is Facer, who has a 27-point lead over Applebonkers at the summit of the FFScout Moderators and Contributors League.

Finally, Jaffalicious posted this update on the current leaders in the FFS UEFA Champions League contest.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Superb in that regard, no doubt...but recently I think we City fans are realizing he's a bit obsessed with himself as well...

Seems to be smug about his past achievements but that is same with all the top managers.

There's definitely that but I also think he over-analyzes some games. I think the reason why he's made bizarre lineups against Barca with both City and Bayern is that he considers Barca to be his creation and he tries to counter his system and fails spectacularly, like everyone he plays when he uses his system. It's a paradox. 🙂

Definitely. I think weve been a bit demanding because of his stellar start, realistically we would've been happy with this before the start of the season. Tying Celtic and getting whacked by Barca is a bit unacceptable though, especially the former.

Benching a fit Aguero is definitely bizarre, he prolly overestimated Barca defence. A very confident manager nevertheless, or maybe sometimes overconfident in his methods.

There's so much I appreciate about what he's doing, but his management of Sane and Hart bothers me a lot. Also, our defense looks like a joke at times.

If I go cheap with my 4.0 GK combo of Pickford + Grant and 3.9 DF instead of Amat, I can go with this set.

          Grant - Pickford
          Walker - Holebas - 3.9 - Pieters - Clyne
          Sanchez - Walcott - Allen - KDB - Firmino

I you can go with Cech, I might choose him. Liverpool just got their first CS last week and it's against Mourinho's United.

From watching, Karius didn't give much confidence to fans too. Anyway, easier fixtures to come, Liverpool might start to keep CS and you have 0.6 spare.

So here we are folks, 4:30am on a Saturday morning. Here's a fire take on Sánchez vs Walcott.

I've decided to use Arsenal's most recent games against Swansea(PL) and Ludogorets(UCL) as case studies as these games are not only the most recent and both at home, but also reflect the likely gameflow(Arsenal dominating possession, playing with a false 9, likely similar teammates etc.) against today's opponents Middlesbrough.
As well as said case studies, season-so-far data is applicable as always to prevent 'outliers' being depicted as facts.

    The case for Alexis Sánchez....

Alexis Sánchez is now the furthest forward Arsenal player, dubbed as the 'false nine' in a Giroud-less formation for Arsenal since the start of the season. A look at his passes received maps gives a good revealing as to how high up the pitch he truly is.

    vs Ludogorets: http://i.imgur.com/yescY4p.png

So, from this, it's interesting to see that Sánchez is pretty 'false' when it comes to being a number nine. He receives the ball in a withdrawn position, not as high as a more orthodox, direct striker may be treated and this is down to Arsenal's playing style more than anything. What I can say though is Sánchez patrols in the area that a Mesut Özil likes to operate in fact and both players seem relatively integral to Arsenal's build-up against a deep block.

A look at Arsenal's passing networks in both games and it's almost laughable at how close the duo are in terms of where they receive the ball. The only difference being how Özil gets a lot more ball volume(depicted by how large his red dot is) in comparison to the Chilean. It's also worth noting how Özil is a little left orientated in terms of where he gets the ball. Does the entire Arsenal team also shift to the left is said occurrence? Does Sánchez drift left also?

    vs Ludogorets: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvKJLGdWIAEyZh6.jpg:large

Whilst many of you may view Sánchez not getting the ball much as a bad thing, Özil is quite clearly the better player in terms of creativity and vision, so his volume is anticipated and an advantage in terms of Arsenal's overall play.

    vs Ludogorets: http://i.imgur.com/gXqXrfl.png

But Sánchez is still getting the ball(and touches) in central areas around the edge of the penalty area, as well as on the inside left. Does Sánchez 'beat his man' and create for himself, or with Sánchez's striking ability, a goal from outside of the penalty area is never out of the question...right? A look at his shot locations so far this season paint the picture.

    Sánchez shot map(16/17): http://i.imgur.com/Na4kRAQ.png

Wow. It's nice to see Alexis Sánchez taking shots in such a central location which is rife for serious goal threat in comparison to his usual longer-range, wider shot locations last season as a left-winger. Shooting location is often an underrated aspect when looking at a player, where volume is seen as a more desirable stat(although quality of a chance is never quantifiable) so in this case, seeing both the location and volume plumps Sánchez' goal threat severely and among the talk of a potential 15-20 goal player.

    Sánchez chance creation map(16/17): http://i.imgur.com/A3K8WXi.png

Ok so this isn't pretty, but what can you say. Chances created is my least favourite statistic for measuring true creativity as it fails to measure neither quality nor location of the assist of shot. I don't like reading much into this but still, Sánchez hasn't created much in the box, in truth.

    The case for Theo Walcott....

After a two year spell of crying because he wasn't the centre-forward, Theo Walcott has finally returned to his role as a right-winger with rich success; 5 goals in 8 PL games. The beauty of Theo Walcott as a right winger is how he can operate as both an inside forward, with an eye for goal or, more rarely now with Bellerín in the side, as a traditional winger, 1 vs 1 with the full-back.

    vs Ludogorets: http://i.imgur.com/d04qbZ3.png

Walcott does see a lot of the ball inside these days which may have something to do with him 'filling in' for Alexis Sánchez at times in his false nine role. As you might have interpreted from the passing networks above, Hector Bellerín does see a lot of ball volume on the right which leaves Walcott somewhat redundant in possession but does however leave him free to make his trademark runs from out to in which sees his goal threat increase. It's also impressive to see how much Walcott does himself in terms of self-creativity when you look at his passes received to his touchmaps.

    vs Ludogorets: http://i.imgur.com/4qnjjyb.png

You thought Sánchez's shot locations were nice? Well, take a look at this...

    Theo Walcott shot map(2016/17): http://i.imgur.com/X81aFP9.png

Not only does Theo Walcott take his usual shots within 'Walcott alley' ( http://i.imgur.com/wzeRoZL.png?1 ) but also from within central areas. There are a lot of them. They are in good positions. They rank 4th in the league in terms of xG. They are the shots of Theodore James Walcott this season.

If you like a shot from Walcott alley as your starter, a main as a shot from a central location, do you like a pass into a central area as a dessert?

Theo Walcott chance creation map(16/17): http://i.imgur.com/yxdbtke.png

Creating for shots inside the box in central areas is a good thing, right?

Does this leave you wonder how good Alexis Sánchez being a 'false nine' actually is for his goal threat? Is Theo Walcott really a right-winger? Is chances created a good stat? Why do numbers in a members area table all count the same with no context? Am I a lunatic?

Seriously I went Sanchez last week so will try again this week. It's a coin flip but stats would seem to favour Walcott.

Depends where you are too. Sanchez safe, but Walcott more adventurous. We sometimes forget this is a game !

It made me wonder how these stats look for Ozil.

Will he, at the end, be the winner ?

Sanchez coming deeper to see more of the ball allows Walcott to get into forward or right forward position.

He becomes the main target to receive passes from Bellerin, Ozil, Sanchez, Iwobi in good shooting areas.

Easily the better captain pick imo.

I hadn't considered that. On the limited highlights I have seen that makes a lot of sense.

Brilliant analysis. Shot maps + chance created maps are underrated around these parts.

Neither. I’d go Shaqiri. He seems like the logical captain pick this gameweek.

History and to some extent stats would suggest not. A valuable price rise transfer for sure and could also grab a few points. I didn't have the luxury to be able to jump on but wouldn't want beyond the next couple. I like my 5th cheap and wouldn't consider at the mo for a 4th.
