This Much We Know – Gameweek 28

Harry Kane’s ankle blow tears up the masterplan. Transfer speculation casts a cloud over Romelu Lukaku’s rise, while Josh King proves he doesn’t even need penalties to prove his value. We learned this and more from the low-fat Gameweek 28…

Kane blow sends us back to drawing board…
Just a week ago we stressed the near-essential status of Harry Kane for our squads – seven days later, we now have to face up to life without him.

In a chain of events typical of this season, another ankle injury has derailed a prize Fantasy asset, just as momentum appeared to have rendered him key to our plans.

With Spurs confirming ligament damage this evening, we must now consider how we re-adjust, with reserved funds potentially free to invest and Sergio Aguero perhaps no longer surplus to requirements.

Lukaku’s contract is an unwanted distraction…
With Kane ducking out of the equation, we now rely on Romelu Lukaku to remain a mainstay and keep producing the performances and output that have served us so well to this point.

But today’s revelation that he’s rejected Everton’s “bumper” contract offer casts an untimely cloud over the Belgian’s current status.

So reliable at Goodison Park, having returned goals in his last five home outings, Lukaku looked a shoo-in to retain the Gameweek armband ahead of the visit of Hull City.

Now doubtless subject to a frenzied media circus, with speculation on his future spinning furiously, we have to pray that Lukaku remains focused on scoring goals to keep the points flowing.

Sanchez may return sooner than planned…
Recent events surrounding Kane and Lukaku may now see us consider our perspective on Alexis Sanchez.

While we’d welcome the luxury of being able to assess the Chilean’s performance, along with Arsenal’s, against West Brom, there’s now an argument to move early.

Many will have funds available should Kane be ruled out and, for those perhaps doubting Lukaku’s frame of mind ahead of Gameweek 29, Sanchez would be the obvious fallback for the captaincy.

While there are clearly doubts on the form and mindset of Sanchez and Arsenal at this time, with two double Gameweeks seemingly guaranteed, there can be no question that our move for their prize asset will arrive at some point.

The Baggies are browsing the brochures…
Not quite on the beach, West Brom appear to be in danger of settling for their lot having surrendered so willingly to Everton at Goodison Park.

With safety secured and a European place likely to be seen as an unwanted fringe benefit, Tony Pulis’ men are caught in limbo with their motivation levels in question.

While Fantasy managers are evacuating on their assets at pace, equally we must start to consider West Brom as a convenient opponent, who could offer goals and clean sheet opportunities to those teams up against them.

Ahead of Gameweek 29, it’s perhaps another factor to consider when weighing up the merits of an early return for Sanchez.

The gap between Coleman and Baines widens by the week…
Already an argument settled by Seamus Coleman’s relentless form which has seen him provide a goal, assist or a clean sheet in eight of nine Gameweeks, Saturday’s unfortunate chain of events only compounded matters.

Baines withdrawal at half-time, robbing him of Everton’s shut-out, put recent developments into sharp focus.

Baines cannot hope to mirror Coleman’s tireless marauding, and while his crafty left foot remains a factor, Saturday’s back problem is perhaps symptomatic of an asset reaching the latter stages of his career.

Further injuries and rest and rotation may soon follow, with Everton surely likely to recruit cover at left-back in the summer.

That would see the gap become a chasm when next season’s player list enters circulation.

King may be an offer we can’t refuse…
For all the concerns on Bournemouth’s fixture list and chatter surrounding double Gameweek assets, we surely cannot afford to overlook Josh King.

Eight goals from the last seven Gameweeks hammer home his potential and, while spot-kicks have been a factor, King almost extinguished that dependency on Saturday by scoring an open play hat-trick and dragging his earlier penalty wide.

The Norwegian is likely to regain duties for the home fixture with Swansea City and, if Jack Wilshere is considered for a start, King will likely move back into the central striker role.

The fixtures are against him but, with Bournemouth surely required to fight for survival until the final kick, we have to consider that the formbook can be an unwanted distraction at this point.

The Cherries are capable of scoring against any opponent – they have done so in five successive away matches. Should they maintain that record, there is surely no question that King will go on providing returns to justify the modest outlay.

Coutinho tests the patience…
At times this season Philippe Coutinho has won our trust, but we seem a million miles from that scenario now.

Recruited ahead of a Gameweek 28 meeting with Burnley, having topped the shot charts over the last four Gameweeks, the Brazilian put in a listless shift against the Clarets, resulting in his withdrawal on the hour-mark.

Yet to return to the form and output we saw before his mid-season ankle injury, the impact of that setback lingers.

As we start to evacuate slots to make way for double Gameweek assets, Coutinho is likely now seen as one of the first to be sacrificed, with his role in our season perhaps even at an end.

Sigurdsson to Mawson has been a profitable link…
Defences should have really caught on to Alfie Mawson’s threat at set-plays but, rather like Gareth McAuley at West Brom, he appears to a hugely effective blunt weapon that just can’t be repelled.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s delivery is clearly a factor, and while the two combined to muster a mere consolation at Hull City, the goal proved far more significant for the pair’s Fantasy owners.

There is no double Gameweek on offer, but Mawson and Sigurdsson can remain loyal servants over the coming weeks, with the talk of Martin Olsson as an alternative to the centre-back now well and truly silenced.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I would steady the ship at the back with a Brunt to Valencia or Walker, but if only doing one more transfer depends how much you are prepared to lose on Kane.

Can Kaku still be trusted with the armband with everything that's going on and it's not like the backup option Sanchez is not in a similar situation.

This won't be news to him...isn't really news to anybody as it's been clear for some time that he has bigger aspirations than EFC. It's clear that he wants to impress any potential suitors (look at his performances this season) and I can only see this spurring him on. Don't stress!

Probably been asked, but when are people eyeing up the wildcard? I am not enamoured by my team but happy with the rank. Thinking GW 32 but it's tempting to use it over the international break and capitalize on changes earlier.

its much harder this season with the dgw uncertainty. im in wait'n'see mode

if I resist using my WC this week, I will almost certainly use it over the international break. I am more concerned about my ML than OR. I am four points behind the leader who has already used his WC. I consider that using my WC now or next week, would put me in a position to leap ahead over the next few weeks. I also think that while we don't know when the DGW are, we do know the teams and the players from those teams that we would want. Most of the prime DGW players also have a good run of fixtures, so it isn't like brining them in now will cause you to drop points. of course, there is always injury risks etc, but that is something I am willing to chance and I'll still have FTs to use to sort out any issues later. I know there are many on here that think that you should only use it GW36 to maximise the BB for the big DGW in GW37. I don't want to wait that long as if it doesn't work out and I am still trailing, there is only one week left to catch the ML leader.

We know the teams but we don't know who they are playing. Soton may have 2 double game weeks against top 6 opposition in which you really don't want your bench defender playing.

Personally I feel the considered option is to wait to see the fixtures then decide if you want to play the WC and build your team accordingly ?

I had originally planned keeping Mane and Firmino for the fixtures ahead. Changed plan on that
Firminio and Philips to Sanchez and King.
And I was going Alli in before Kane injury. It's a very hard call
Both have good fixtures I think it comes down to whether you think Alli performs without Kane and I suppose getting Alli is spreading the risk a bit.

Lukaku owners, if he keeps up his form, will you keep him during the DGWs or drop from someone with a DGW? I am thinking I will hold given he has West Ham away and Watford at home in GWs 34 and 37 respectively.

there will be some tough calls, Liverpool also has good fixtures for GWS 34 and 37. I got burnt last year dropping my spurs players for alternatives with DGW. If I remember right, Liverpool rotated a lot of their players during the DGW last year and returns were sparse.

"liverpool has good fixtures" this means nothing because they don't perform in 'good fixtures'. More likely to have good returns in their 'bad fixtures'. imo

When you put it like this, it wont be an issue to set a team for those weeks with no WC 😛

            Should be fine barring injuries/suspensions

The biggest issue will be tying up any DGw's with GW 37 so you get the same benefit as the wild carder. Many will have bench boost then but I think key 1 gamers won't be that bad. looking for 11/12 DGW's in 37 and holding Siggy/Kaku etc

Having enough DGWers in 34 and 37 is the hard part.

And yeah, used my WC too already, so need some careful planning now as well.
Probably some ARS players in, not sure about more atm.

    Bangladesh playing their 100th test!
After experiencing so many ups and downs ( mainly downs sadly) for last 17 years, comes down to this landmark test! Feeling a bit nostalgic.

No indication that City struggle to score in big games

    Pickford (Randolph)
    Alonso Coleman Brunt (Robertson Pieters)
    Hazard Coutinho Firmino Siggy King
    Aguero Lukaku (Crouch)

I have 1m in the bank.

    A. Firmino to Alli
    B. Aguero to Costa and Firmino to Sanchez (-4)
    C. Other

    Pickford
    Alonso Coleman Walker
    Mane Coutinho Siggy Antonio King
    Costa Lukaku(C)

Jakupovic Llorente FunesMori Mawson; 3.2m ITB & 0FT

Correct decision to bench Llorente & FM?

  26. Pocky

    Here's my current WC squad

    De Gea Pickford
    Walker Valencia Alonso Kone Yoshida
    Pedro Sanchez Alli King Siggy
    Costa Lukaku Gabbi

    1.2 ITB
Only King, Siggy & Lukaku from this lot without DGW's so should be easy enough to change as and when.

Well covered for those teams with 2 DGW's, Siggy can easily become Walcott/Tadic or Costa to Ibra etc

Kone & Yosh are merely bench fodder awaiting DGW bench boost.

    GTG??

Pedro is the one I would question

you have Costa already and I think theo could actually be better shout

looks strong overall in fairness, although who you're benching most weeks, let alone this one is a mystery

      1. Pocky
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

Current Value is 105.4 + the 1.2ITB. King could/will become De Roon , he'll then be benched every week allowing me another 1.2 mill. That could help ungrade Pedro.

Pedro could become Son for now??

    Courtios -pickford
    Coleman-walker-jones- mcauly-smith
    Mane -pedro-lallana-siggy-stanislas
    Lukaku-carroll-kane

Did Philips and kun to Pedro and kane ..I know it's a blunder..Should I
    1) Kane to Costa for a -8
    2)use WC now
3)gtg for this week and remove kane next week.

    1. is sanchez a must have option for gw 29 or he can wait till gw 31??

    2. Is vardy a good differential option for next 3 gws comparing to costa?? since the stats show that palace, stoke and city ( chelsea's next 3 opponents stopped conceding goals) while the other 2 opponent of leicester (west ham & sunderland) are conceding goals like they r on complementary buffet??

Leicester needs form and confidence to do well in CL and the best way for them to get that is get momentum from their PL games. They're far from safe from relegation as well. Think they will perform really well in the upcoming games.
