Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 6 – Sunday

A Tomer Hemed winner reminds us all of the delights of a budget third striker as Newcastle United’s well-owned goalkeeper and defenders fail to keep out Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s one and only match.

Hemed the hero, for now

The 2017/18 Fantasy Premier League season is in danger of leaving us dazed and confused before October has even had the chance to turn up.

We started the campaign looking at top-performing midfielders, just like last year, to lead the way.

Now we think premium-priced forwards are the way to go, with budget midfielders to provide ballast and some decent returns now and again.

But Sunday’s match between Brighton and Newcastle threw even that idea into question, as the Seagulls’ Tomer Hemed – an archetypal cheap third striker if ever there was one – delivered a nine-point performance to prove that fine hauls from forwards don’t always have to come with a budget-busting price tag attached.

Dale Stephens provided the assist for the Israeli, who has two goals and an assist from his last three starts, making the 2.8%-owned forward a tidy differential indeed.

He’s been involved in three of Brighton’s four home goals this season and is something of a talisman at the Amex – the Seagulls have won 13 and drawn one of the 14 matches in which he’s scored on home turf.

Indeed, going back further, Hemed has now been involved in 20 goals in his last 23 starts from Brighton at the Amex, producing 15 goals and five assists.

But the striker could go from hero to villain in a matter of days. Hemed was involved in an “incident” with Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin late on, which appeared to show the striker stamp on the Magpies defender.

Accidental or otherwise, the incident could be reviewed by the FA having been apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner.

Should the FA issue a retrospective charge of violent conduct, Hemed will face a three-match ban. That would rule him out of fixtures with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United. We would hope to have confirmation in the next 24 hours, with Marriner’s report set to be processed today.

So far, only 13,000 have invested in Hemed following Sunday’s points, with a potential ban no doubt a factor in the lukewarm interest to this point.

Should he sit out the next three, Chris Hughton’s options in attack would be severely limited. Glenn Murray failed to make the squad on Sunday as he struggles for fitness, although Izzy Brown returned from injury to make the bench and could be an option. He is classed as a 5.3 FPL midfielder.

Brighton’s 1-0 win over Newcastle made it back-to-back victories at home and seven of their next eight matches on the south coast – EVE SOT STK CRY BUR WAT BOU – offer the potential for good returns from their defensive assets as well, with only a Gameweek 15 visit from Liverpool likely to be a step too far for a backline of players available at around the 4.5 mark.

They certainly have some previous for parsimony at home, albeit in the Championship, as they kept 12 clean sheets and conceded just 14 goals in 23 matches last term.

Newcastle huffed and puffed but couldn’t breakdown a resilient Brighton, which derailed a number of Gameweek 6 bandwagons.

Jamaal Lacelles (10.1%) ended up with one point after being yellow carded, while Matt Ritchie, Chancel Mbemba and Christian Atsu had earned a combined 783,000+ transfers-in for the Gameweek, only to sell their new owners short.

Even keeper Rob Elliot, a 23.8%-owned budget pick at 4.1, let us down, failing to claim a save point for only the second time this season, although he was also the most benched player (808,000) of Gameweek 6.

There should be better defensive days to come for the Geordies – of the 18 teams to have played six times, only the two Manchester clubs have allowed fewer shots in the box than Newcastle, even though they’ve kept just two clean sheets.

And Rafa Benitez’s men still have six decent matches in the next eight. A visit from Liverpool next week and a Gameweek 12 trip to Man United aside, Newcastle will face: sot CRY bur BOU wat WBA.

@Ridz - I've been doing something similar to your idea on how to pick a striker but looking across all positions and looking at a players involvement in goals, ie. scoring and assisting. I've been doing this to see if it's possible to cover any players points.

I think if you want to look at premium strikers involvement you need to look both goals and assists or you're skewing. You also need to consider how many a team scores as a higher percentage involvement for a team that scores less isn't a necessarily good thing.

I've included a few examples below. Hope this helps.

    Chelsea - 12 Goals
    Morata - 6g - 2a - 67%

    Man City - 21 Goals
    Aguero - 6g - 3a - 43%
    Jesus - 4g - 0a - 19%
    D.Silva - 0g - 6a - 29%

    Man Utd - 17 Goals
    Lukaku - 6g - 1a - 41%
    Mkhi - 1g - 5a - 35%

    Spurs - 10 Goals
    Kane - 4g - 0a - 40%
    Eriksen - 2g - 3a - 50%

Great post, actually really helps with my question below - I theory Morata can match / beat Lukaku's points haul and is 1.5 cheaper?

I'm looking at the switch after next week. Lukaku will face Liverpool, Spurs & Chelsea , Morata has much kinder fixtures. Think he will outscore him between GWs 8-11

Surely the main issue with Morata is whether his % of goals involved in will drop once Hazard is fully up to speed, as well as losing pens. I know that Lukaku has lost pens already but for me he is scoring goals for fun without even playing particularly well and there's no reason why that can't continue.

I'm sticking with Red Rom for now.

    Hi All,

Just wondering what your plans are for Hazard? Looking at Chelsea's forthcoming fixtures I really think I need Chelsea coverage - What do you think to the following moves?

    Current Team:

    Foster,

    Cedric, Jones, Hegazi, Mbemba

    Mkhitaryan, Alli, Salah

    Kane, Lukaku, Vardy

    Elliot, Dunk, Cork, Carroll

    Suggested Team,4 Point Hit 🙁

    Foster,

    Cedric, Jones, Dunk, Maguire

    Mkhitaryan, Hazard, Salah

    Kane, Morata, Vardy

    Elliot, Mbemba, Cork, Carroll

What do you all think? Double up on Chelsea too much? Am I a fool for getting rid of Alli and Lukaku?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Chelsea's fixtures are golden over that period. Definitely looking at Hazard. Also his return surely bodes well for Alonso's assist potential

I would love to get Alonso in but I just cant find room, I think Hazard and Morata during this golden period should be enough though - I'm reluctant to get rid of Lukaku though, he's a points machine!

I would just do Lukaku > Morata. Hazard is yet to start a game in the PL, and hasn't built any form yet. Also, Hazard has a proven record for scoring big in home games. I would see how Hazard gets on, and would consider him from around GW14, where he starts to have an excellent run of home games.

Also, do Lukaku > Morata only after Lukaku has had his game at palace.

Oh yeah, I'm sticking with Lukaku for this weekend, potentially even captioning him - It's between him and Kane.

Cheers for the advice, its a valid point on Hazard, I will be interested to see if he starts this weekend against City.

There is also the option of Lukaku to Morata, Alli to Silva (for City coverage) and Hegazi to to Alonso? Perhaps that is the smarter route?

Those moves look smart indeed. A Chelsea defender would a great asset over this run they have, as would a City attacking player. And you could use this period in the mean time to monitor Hazard, while being safe in the knowledge you have their main striker who is in great form.

It's funny that I asked last week whether I should put Ritchie and Jesus in for Alli and Chicharito and every single person who responded said yes. Glad I held off! It's typical Pep. He will probably bench Aguero again next and then the masses will be selling him in droves.

I would say that now Jesus has been rested for a game that he's more likely to play the next 2 or 3 games so I'd keep him.

I'm wildcarding next week and looking at a 4-3-3. Would like a big front three of Kane, Aguero and Morata but it's so tempting to downgrade one to Vardy when I see what that money can do for me:

    A) Aguero, Luiz, Ward, Salah, Atsu
    B) Vardy, Azpilicueta, Kolasinac, Mane, Ritchie

    But it's Aguero....

I think Aguero is going to be too difficult to ignore. City's fixtures look great, and like you've just shown, there's cheaper alternatives that you can get in instead along side him which will still do the job just nicely. Also, you're adding another captain option into your frontline. I think it's worth it.

    Elliot/Foster
    Alonso Jones Naughton Suttner Lowe

I'd say no, that could potentially burn you. Firmino has a decent fixture against Newcastle (and don't forget, is still on pens), and Micky could very well be the one who sets up Lukaku's goals. I'd rather have Micky and Firmino than Atsu and Lukaku. Also, you've got a great captain option in Kane. Save FT

Morata truly looks like a bargain at his price, he's in great form, has Hazard rerturning soon, and that run of fixtures is just sublime. Could easily match/outscore Lukaku imo. Adding to that, I just get the feeling with Uniteds great start to the season, Mourinho's going to keep it tight against the tougher opposition. We already saw evidence of this this weekend

No issues really. Maybe Quaner > Hemed if you want a playing 3rd striker? Otherwise save FT.

Captain would be between Eriksen and Firmino. Even Aguero isn't a bad option. He can score against anyone. I think Eriksen edges it though.

Folks, save FT or any major surgery to be done?

    de Gea
    Cedric Kolasinac Dawson
    Atsu Gross Eriksen Mkhitaryan
    Lukaku (c) Kane (vc) Vardy

    Elliot Carroll Mariappa Mee

    Bank: 0.9m
    1 FT

I'm currently leaning towards saving my FT. Keen to hear feedback and which fella I should be looking to transfer out.

I think I'd save FT for this week.

I'd be looking at potentially upgrading Atsu (Choupo-Moting perhaps, has a strong run coming up and more of a threat). Also Mariappas fixtures soon to turn sour (Naughton/Fernandez an option there)

Also start to seriously consider replacing your United players with Chelsea and City assets over the break. This is probably your priority with your 2 FT.

Atsu owners not worried ? I think he's going to be dropped soon

Anyone who watched bha new game must see he lacked endproduct and cant cross.

Not worried, if it happens it happens. He's cheap, RLC could replace him after next two GWs. But I don't think he'll get dropped, NEW as a team were not there yesterday, it's not only him.

think he's getting close to dropping to the bench to be honest. Got a few that can replace him. Hopefully it comes in 2 game weeks though so RLC can start over him

    Mooy >> Who?

    Ritchie
    Brady
    Chupo-Moting
    Richarlson
    Someone else?

Anyone 6.2 or less is viable.

I'm working on this now myself, leaning to Choupo-Moting at the minute but still very much undecided

I've had a deeper look and I quite like how Watford rotate with Swansea, I have T. Carroll so could rotate him with Richarlson quite nicely.

I have Carroll too and had considered a rotation but he just doesn't look like he'll be good for much more than 2s and 3s even in softer fixtures

I get what you're saying, but surely it's a matter of time before he gets an assist from a corner or something - which will inevitably come in the week I've picked Richalison instead!

I'm keeping for now. Would like to think that coming off the bench to grab a goal increases his nailed-ness.

    Hart (Elliot)
Jones | Davies | Hegazi (Naughton | Mbemba)
Coutinho | Atsu | Ramsay | Alli (Sanches)
    Firmino | Lukaku(c) | Aguero

    £0.9ITB 1 FT

Can't see anything pressing. Happy to stick with Bobby F as only a matter of time until he gets in the returns. Could do Sanches to TCarroll/RLC to free up some funds, but would rather have 2FT next week if required. Any other thoughts?

Save FT. Could potentially upgrade Atsu to the likes of Choupo, and then Lukaku > Morata over the break looks the best move.

Cheers Patricio. I quite like Atsu as an enabling fourth mid at the moment. Great fixtures in next 5 (starting with Liverpool's shaky defence this week). More inclined to ship Renato as his minutes seem far more at risk. Currently looking at Lukaku and Hegazi to Morata and Cedric next week with funds to bring in KDB and Hazard in the coming weeks

Oh yes! Completely missed that. Shipping Renato is indeed a greater concern.
And I would definitely consider Hazard (but only from GW14 when he has his much preferred run of home games). I would also look at Silva as an alternative to KDB. The money you save there could be used to get a City/Chelsea defender which could pay off just as well.

But I agree, for now save FT, and then do Renato > RLC,
Lukaku > Morata, which gives you some funds to play around with later to make your moves in midfield and bring in a defender for Hegazi. I like the fact that you're planning ahead, and have some flexibility.

It's the way to go for the time being. Stick three captain options up front, go for a Pool mid, and a couple of wing backs in defense. Sorted.

Roy Hodgson with a false number 9? 😀

Ladapo is the only fit striker it says. Maybe he will play a midfielder out of position like Lee or Sako.
