Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not really mate - No other wingers available now Pep is playing 4-1-3-2. One loses their place when Kun comes back (6-8 weeks?)

Pep have several formations in his arsenal.. He wont stick to one formation.. He has also played 3-5-2 which he might convert back to when Aguero is fit.

Besides both De bruyne and B. Silva can be deployed on the wings in a 4-3-3 // 4-1-4-1 // 4-2-3-1. De bruyne playing a winger would allow Gundogan/b Silva to come into the side as well.

My point is he has endless options.. So I would go for the nailed on players for now.

Sane > Coutinho if you have the 0.6 from somewhere. Also 4.0 keeper might be a problem. If you will never play them you mayaswel go 3.9 for Periera. My Lukaku-Jesus-Kane team... (which I'll probably end on):

      Ryan/Pope • Elliot
      B.Davies • Otamendi • D. Luiz • Ward • Yedlin
      Sterling • Coutinho • Choupo-M • RLC • Carroll
      Kane • Jesus • Lukaku

Fantastic idea on Periera Raf! I never play the 4.0 but can't afford anyone else lol

Luiz is nice, if he got FKs back he'd be golden. You seen Chelsea this season, has he taken any since Alonso scored? Cout is a good buy mate. I've swapped out Hazard to keep Jesus, think that's worthy. Just waiting on Cedric dropping to afford it.

He will surely be on some FKs. Good route into Chelsea def @ 5.9. Could easy be 6.2+ in a few weeks after a couple cleanies and a FK 🙂

Peirera is a dangerous shout as he takes up a United slot.. could require a lot of reconstruction if one would want three United players from gw12 and onwards.. not sure the extra 0.1 is worth the punt..unless it is imminent for the team you want to field

With Aguero & Morata now injured is Kane, Kaku & Jesus the front 3 to go for on wildcard?

Is Vardy worth considering over Kaku or Jesus?

The heavy front 3 allows for a switch to Jesus to Morata when he’s back injury or when Aguero is back which will impact Jesus’s minutes.

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

Yes, I like i think a ton of others are on Jesus Kankaku with our WC. I actually started by dropoing Kaku for Morata but when the latter got injured Kaku had to return. I'll get Morata back when he's ready - either for Kaku or Jesus depending on the Aguero situation and any further unforeseen injuries.

I'm probably keeping those three, esp with BOU

I would for Bou at home but maybe leave enough cash ITB to do Eriksen to Hazard if he explodes v Palace

    RMWCT

    Pope
    Alonso Luiz Davies Jones Ward
    Eriksen Coutinho Sterling
    Kane Jesus

    (Elliot DCL RLC Carroll)

Thoughts on double Chelsea and Burnley at the back?

Plan to rotate Pope and Elliot, with bench to cover Wards away fixtures.

I'd try and get Stones instead of Jones, would give you an amazing defense.

    Thoughts on this Wildcard team:

    Fabianski / Elliot
    Mee / B.Davies / Otamendi / Mbemba / Cedric
    Fellani / Coutinho / D.Silva / Choupo-Moting / RLC
    Lukaku / Kane / Jesus

Should I swap Lukaku + Fellani --> Vardy + Richarlson?

      Keep Kaku.

      Or I could do this:

      Fabianski / Elliot
      Luiz / B.Davies / Otamendi / Mbemba / Cedric
      Richarlson / Coutinho / D.Silva / Choupo-Moting / Fellani
      Vardy / Kane / Jesus

      ??

Mbemba won't start anymore, try and get some funds to afford Martina (4.3) or Dunk (4.4)

        Or Wimmer 4.4

Can somebody please direct me to the correct table.

        Fabianksi Ellliot
        Otamendi Cedric Ward Clark Rosenior
        D. Silva Coutinho Sterling Gross Carrrol
        Lukaku Kane Vardy

Really want a strong attacking 6 and I feel the defence is not the strongest but does the job.

Would ideally want Chelsea coverage but wouldn’t know how to get any in there without compromising attack.

        0.1 ITB to spend.

        Any advice is much appreciated!

        Thank you in advance!

From now until GW18, who is best?

        1. Luiz
        2. Maguire

Chelsea have slightly favourable fixtures but is it safer to go for someone who's arguably more of a threat, less likely to get booked and maybe less likely to be rotated?
