Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Austin Keeps Cherries in Check

Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but it’s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season – and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

    Hey All

    Pope - Elliot
    Azpi - Otamendi - Mustafi - Daniels - Mee
    Hazard - Salah - Coutinho - Sterling - Ramsey
    Morata - Murray - Niasse

    0.7m ITB, 0FT

Areas of concern: 2 Burnley players at the back, with fixtures turning in a few weeks I'm looking to move one of them out at least

I'm also a bit worried about strike force, happy with Morata but with Niasse now being benched I'm concerned

I've concocted the following options and wanted to get your thoughts on it

    Option 1:

Pope, Mustafi > DDG, Kiko, I can then do Daniels, Niasse > Duffy, DCL

    Option 2:

Azpi, Mustafi, Murray > Kiko, Christensen and Firmino, I can do Mee to Duffy or another DF later then

    Thoughts?

Should add I have exact cash to do option 2, I've already done a transfer this week, so won't do it now, but may consider it for a -8 next week if the prices hold

Firmino hasn't justified the shelling out of 8.4m so wouldn't do option 2. Option 1 of those.

I know he hasn't but he's one of those that tends to go on runs, I'm thinking he may hit a few past some teams over Xmas. Jurgen seems to be rotating well this year as opposed to last year when the players got flogged till the legs fell off. So I'm expecting us to hit a few teams for some big scores, given the fixtures I'm expecting some of the lower positioned teams to have stretched their resources by the time Bobby and co roll into town.

I think I'll do the Mustafi to Kiko transfer and then just observe for a week or 2 before making the 2nd part of the decision

Hi guys, sorta trying to balance out my desire to avoid point hits with my need to manage impending price changes

    Team is currently:

    Pope (Elliott)
    *Daniels Dunk Otamendi Azpi (Ward)
    Salah Hazard Sterling Richalison (RLC)
    Kane Morata (*Niasse)

Initially had Daniels to Femenia pencilled in for gw17 but the consensus seems to be one of distrust for the Bournemouth defence and I wouldn't disagree. So thinking I could do Daniels to Femenia -4 now as Burnley are unlikely to pose much of a threat and then DCL in for Niasse gw17. Femenia is a baps magnet so if they keep the clean sheet you'd expect them to keep, I'd likely make a couple of points profit. This would then leave 0.4m itb, enough to absorb another DCL rise before bringing him in for gw17 if it looks like he's nailed, thoughts?

    1. There Can Be Only One
      • 12 Years

Whats the likelihood of missing out due to the price rise?? If it's likely then I say go for it

Cheers, I'd say likely on the Femenia front if things go as expected, on 18% now so not expecting a rise this gw but it's possible by the end of the week if he continues rising at this current rate. DCL I'd also expect to rise again so will be tight

True, you'd think he'd get in a forward. Would ideally hold Niasse for 2 more gws before making a move but buyers aren't getting the memo unfortunately πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜†

But Jan window is still 7 matches away!!! He's only got DCL vs Niasse right now and Niasse is taller, Big Fat Sam likes a headed goal, DCL is taller and in form (although both are 6 ft or over) so I would assume he plays the next few with Niasse probably rotated in at some point for cover

Bringing in Haz meant a hit anyway, and, with Sane's drop, now the "best" transfer option is: Sane, Mustafi > Hazard, Kiko (-4)
    Probably not worth it, eh?

I say it is, Hazard will get the points back over Sane in the next couple of matches and Kiko is a good pick, BPS magnet with good attacking potential, so if Watford get a CS I'd say you're looking at 8/9 pts per match for him there

Good idea play with 10 whilst we all play with 11

    Pick one
    A) Salah , coutinho , vardy
    B) Salah, mane , vardy
    Ç) Salah, mahrez, firmino

All pretty tight, Mahrez will likely outscore Vardy but Coutinho/Mane will outscore Mahrez, I'd go A

I might take a punt and captain Lacazette this week after seeing the ManU game highlights

not for me. seems to waste lots of chances. rotation risk with likes of welbeck and giroud may get a game. could be taken off early at times too

soton are decent at the back. arsenal might find it hard to break down.

stoke meanwhile are all over the place
