Scout Notes – Key Men Rested in Spurs Win

There are no alarms for Spurs and no surprises for Fantasy managers as League Two side Newport County are beaten 2-0 in the final replay of the FA Cup fourth round.

After needing a late goal from Harry Kane to keep his side in the competition when the teams first met late last month, Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t inclined to risk many of his big names for the Wembley follow-up.

The coach made ten changes to the side that drew with Liverpool on Sunday, with Ben Davies and Jan Vertonghen rested, Kane and Kieran Trippier left on the bench and Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli only introduced in the second half.

Just Son Heung-min remained from the Anfield epic and he was a lively presence throughout, setting up Spurs’ second goal before being taken off on the hour with Saturday’s north London derby presumably in mind.

If Newport were daydreaming of a cup upset, an own goal in the 26th minute injected a dose of reality as Moussa Sissoko’s cross deflected off a defender and left visiting keeper Joe Day high and dry.

Spurs never allowed complacency to creep into their game and it was only a combination of Day’s heroics and Spurs’ profligacy – Fernando Llorente missed a range of big chances and Alli hit the bar when put clean through – that kept the score respectable.

But in truth, the tie was over once Erik Lamela had steered home Son’s pass in the 34th minute.

The Argentinian’s career has been in limbo for over a year since picking up a serious hip injury and last night’s goal was his first in 17 months.

He remains unsurprisingly rusty and poses little threat to Spurs’ established attackers for now. New signing Lucas Moura, another possible midfield rotation option for Pochettino, wasn’t eligible for the tie as he signed after the first match in Wales.

The League Two side refused to give up the ghost, but only had one shot on target all night – and that came in injury time at the end of the match – as a Spurs defence which included Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose made it four consecutive home clean sheets in all competitions.

The experienced pair, out since Gameweeks 11 and 22 respectively, will intensify the risk of rotation among Spurs defenders, although it would be a surprise if either featured in this weekend’s clash with Arsenal.

Alderweireld is perhaps the more likely to be used against the Gunners, but only if Pochettino opts for three centre-halves for the derby.

And with Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier all currently available, the Belgian can afford to be eased back into the fray.

Spurs’ reward for last night’s win is a fifth round trip to League One strugglers Rochdale.

Unless there is a major upset in that tie, a quarter-final place beckons, which means Gameweek 31’s home match with Newcastle will have to be rescheduled.

Little by little, Spurs’ squad is now returning to full strength, which is well-timed with league, FA Cup and Champions League fixtures to fulfil over the next month.

Then again, the six matches to play from this Saturday to early March are sufficiently well-spaced not to demand excessive rotation from Pochettino, with Alderweireld and Rose the most likely to upset the status quo, while the potential impact of Moura is yet to be gauged.

FA Cup Fifth Round Draw
Leicester vs Sheffield United
Chelsea vs Hull
Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea
West Brom vs Southampton
Brighton vs Coventry
Huddersfield vs Man United
Rochdale vs Spurs
Wigan vs Man City

At present, we have just two confirmed fixtures for Gameweek 31 – Liverpool vs Watford and Stoke vs Everton, though this is, of course, subject to change.

For example, the loser of the Huddersfield vs Man United match will have a Gameweek 31 fixture, as both their respective opponents (Crystal Palace and West Ham) are already knocked out of the FA Cup.

Although the outcome of these results will mainly affect the Gameweek 31 schedule, then, it’s worth bearing in mind that Man City’s trip to Wigan may yet influence the Gameweek 28 calendar.

This is due to the knock-on effect of City’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, which takes place on the weekend of Gameweek 28.

That Wembley Stadium match has forced Arsenal’s home clash with Pep Guardiola’s side to be moved to Thursday March 1, keeping it in the same round of fixtures.

However, should City draw away to the Latics at the first attempt, their replay would take priority over that league encounter with the Gunners and force it to be again rescheduled to another date, moving it out of the Gameweek and leaving both with a blank.

A reminder that Ben Crellin’s Twitter Moment provides full detail on the scenarios that could develop for Gameweek 31 and beyond.

Not captaining him - but probably joining you as an "early-adopter". Selling Aguero and using the change to bring in Wilson for Niasse.

Could be a really strong differential over the next two, before the masses pile in.

Am I the only one who think that VVD is a fantastic pick atm?

I know that City and Spurs scored few vs Liverpool but looking at their callendar, no blank, VVD attacking stats last few games, eye test and fact that he is in the box quite often makes me think that he may be next Ota with his fantastic run few GWs ago for only 5.5!

Bit of a dilemma this week, some opinions appreciated:

I don't know, the independence comment suggests otherwise 🙂 Still, I wanted people to be able to see all my choices, as it's not so clear cut between a few of them I think (for example Liverpools record against Saints is not actually that good, so that brings Firmino into question)

I’m torn between Walcott and Shaqiri on the bench.

Salah v Agüero are my captain thoughts.

        Thanks for the input.

Zaha, Speroni and Alonso flagged, awesome.

Any news if these are serious injuries?

    Thanks

        Thanks,

Would u get rid of him? He could pave the way to upgrade some other players

No plan to get rid yet. Would need when Auba Haz KDB Sanchez all start firing together.

Speroni had lost his spot anyway, Zaha out for a while, Alonso was tired, plays imo

Can Auba score more points than Firmino from now till end of season?

Or getting Mikhi is enough so that i can continue with Kane-Firmino-Wilson trio?

I'm going Kane, Aub + Firm up top in 2 weeks, I think. He should be great and Arsenal will score lots of goals.

I can get that front 3 by downgrading Son. But both Son and Wilson has nice fixtures coming up after 2gws where Auba has the same scenario.

Basically i want 4 striker spots .. Hoooo

Not enough to justify the extra cost, so for me it comes down to how much you would plan to captain Auba, if you have Kane and Salah I'd say not much is the answer

Thanks a lot. At least you are leading me to a decision.

Will monitor Auba's performance for the next 2 tough fixtures

Do people think it's likely Salah will be subbed early if Pool have a 2 or 3 goal lead against Southampton? Champions league midweek, however no FA cup the next weekend.

Of course, but I don't think captainers will mind if he has scored those 2 or 3 goals himself 🙂

Expecting about 79 mins if that is the case, no less than 70, Klopp is usually late with his subs

gotta to figure all the 3 main choices (Kun, Kane, Salah) are susceptible to early subs if teams are leading especially with all 3 having away CL ties.
Probably argue Kane gets the most minutes if all are winning due to Arsenal being most capable of clawing back a deficit.
But then with Liverpool form this season could easily see Saints turning them over so Salah has to stay on for 90.

Could use a bit of help with this lot if poss. 0 FT, 1.0 ITB.

    De Gea
    Alonso Ota Bauer VVD
    Lingard Salah(C) Shaqiri Son
    Kane Aubameyang

    Pope Mee Albrighton McBurnie

Not really had much luck with Captain picks by the way, so watch Salah blank now......

Hard to call. I probably wouldn't this gameweek, Shaqiri has found some form but getting rid of Lingard against newcastle seems risky.

What would you do with this 1FT

    pickford
    Alonso, vvd, jones
    De bruyne, erikson, mane, kennedy
    Lukaku, ayew, Aubameyang

    Bench, elliot, martina, francis, cork

    Defensive rotation/injury doubts in a 3-4-3

*Alonso - amber flagged, Missed last match
*Jones - missed last match, cold?
*Ota - due rotation surely with komp, stones, laporte vying for start.

    Bench of Mee and Ogbonna

    A. Save transfer
    B. Og to VVD?
    C. Og to alternative?

With return of UCL as big rotation worry, thinking whether klopp will spare VVD a hostile return to St. Marys and play lov/mat/klav instead? Need to get rid of Og due to West hams inability to keep CS!
